Release Blitz: Lone Wolf by Anna Martin + Giveaway!

Lone Wolf by Anna Martin

Jackson Lewis isn’t a typical werewolf. He isolates himself in a small town outside Spokane and dedicates himself to making his business—Lone Wolf Brewery—a success. If it leaves him little time for romance, he’s okay with that. His soul mate could be out there somewhere, but he isn’t actively looking.

So he’s in for quite the shock when he literally bumps into his soul mate—Leo Gallagher, an adorable, nerdy, vibrant music therapist who’s Jackson’s polar opposite.

But he’s human. And a man.

Jackson is straight—or at least he’s always assumed so. Though he can’t deny his attraction to Leo, it’s a lot for both of them to deal with.

While Jackson and Leo figure out what their future might hold, they face prejudice from both the human and werewolf communities—including a group of fanatics willing to kill to show humans and werewolves don’t belong together.

A Pride Anthem by Rob Browatzke: Exclusive Excerpt!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from A Pride Anthem

by Rob Browatzke

Jake was dead. There was no denying it. His funeral, five years earlier, had been standing-room only, and his ashes were in a black urn on the shelf. That was the only sign of Jake in the office though. No pictures of Jake could be found on the walls, either here or at home. His name wouldn’t be found on any of the papers that piled up on Ben’s desk, or on any of the awards and commendations framed on the walls. He was dead, and best forgotten. For the most part, Ben did remember to forget him, and so it came as a complete surprise when Ben woke up to find Jake standing over him.

Jake had died the way many gay men die. No, not AIDS. Many stories exist where gay men die from AIDS, but this is not one of them. No, what Jake had died from had been loneliness. Loneliness, you say? Yes. It is indeed deadly, and many gay men die from it. Sometimes, that manifests as overdose; sometimes, as suicide. In Jake’s case, it had been getting behind the wheel while stinking drunk and wrapping the car around a lamp post. Ben had identified the body, because even though they’d been broken up for two years, their lives were permanently intertwined in the club they owned together. Yes, Ben had gone down to the morgue, identified the body, and certainly never expected to wake up at five in the morning, years later, and see Jake standing at the foot of the bed.

Except, wait! Ben wasn’t in bed. He had fallen asleep on the couch in his office again, something that happened more and more often. Still, home or office, the long-deceased didn’t suddenly appear. Was he dreaming? Blinking and pinching himself didn’t change anything. Jake was standing there looking just like he had in life. Although much more translucent, and had he always had a blue glow? Probably not.

So, he was a ghost. That was clear. Ben didn’t believe in ghosts, or God, or much of anything anymore really. Still, he did believe in what he saw, and he was seeing Jake’s ghost.

Had he been thinking of Jake when he fell asleep? No. He never thought about Jake. Jake was long dead, and by the end of a Friday night on Pride weekend, Ben felt pretty dead himself. When the DJ cut the music at three, Ben had emerged from his office long enough to flood the space with light, sending all the gays scurrying for the exits. Just like happened every weekend. And just like every weekend for the past five years, Ben hadn’t been thinking about Jake when he did it.

He hadn’t been thinking about Jake’s chin dimple. He hadn’t been thinking about Jake’s sculpted torso. He hadn’t been thinking about the way Jake’s pale green eyes stared out from behind his black-rimmed glasses. No, when Ben fell asleep, after the last customer and staff went out into the night before Pride, Ben hadn’t been thinking about Jake at all.

SYN: Consulting by A.G. Carothers: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from SYN: Consulting

by A.G. Carothers

Matt couldn’t get enough of the way Xander tasted on his tongue. The mixture of his own musk with Xander’s natural taste was heady and intoxicating. Matt writhed under him, rubbing his whole body against Xander, letting their smells and tastes mix and merge into a fog that he wanted to drown in.

Xander seemed to forget his search for the lube as he held onto Matt tightly, sweat built between them merging them closer together. Matt needed more, needed to get closer, needed to have Xander inside of him. Taking up the search for the lube, he plunged his hand under the pillow and found it right away.

Matt stilled and pulled back slightly, handing the bottle over to Xander. Xander stopped and looked down into his eyes as he took it. Matt reached up and caressed Xander’s cheek as he suddenly grew serious. “No matter what happens, make sure you come back to me, yeah?” Matt’s voice was hushed, and he smiled to try to cover up the roughness his emotions created in it.

Xander lowered his head and kissed him so very softly that he almost didn’t feel it. “I love you, you know, and I wouldn’t even imagine not coming home to you.” Xander kissed his nose lightly and grinned at the huff Matt made when he swiped his tongue across it. “Don’t worry, Mathieu.” Xander continued, placing light kisses across his face and down his neck.

The Hunt by J.M. Dabney & Davidson King: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from The Hunt

byJ .M. Dabney & Davidson King

After Ray left I found myself in desperate need to keep myself busy. My mind was my own worst enemy. Why would I think Ray would want to have sex with me? Kissing was one thing, but to see me naked? I couldn’t blame him for backing off.

Growing up kids at school called me In-The-Way-Shay because I was always so knobby and knocked things over. My mom told me I often reminded her of a giraffe. While that may not seem like an insult, it was.

Under Ray’s kitchen sink I was surprised not only to actually find cleaning supplies, but they were unopened. He was either the laziest, slobbiest person ever or he really was never here.

There weren’t any dishes in the sink, so I went about spraying down the counters, sink, all the appliances. When I was happy that the sheen of dust was gone, I went to working on the floors. While I cleaned, my mind raced to scenarios. Ray was nice, he didn’t outright say I wasn’t his type or that he thought I was weird. But I knew. Guys who fucked me did it in the back of clubs and with the lights off. Men like Ray never even looked at me twice. I wasn’t as beautiful as Francis was, but I wasn’t so ugly no one touched me. There was just that moment right after orgasm the other guy looked disgusted.

I don’t know why I flirted. Ugh! The more upset I got with myself the cleaner Ray’s house got. The musty, stagnant odor that once filled the air was replaced with lemon and lavender.

I meant it when I said I trusted Ray, I did. There was an honesty to him, a gritty, raw honesty. He kept people safe. It didn’t matter he said his past was shady. Who he was now was a good person. I was so conflicted.

I was in the room Ray assigned me tucking in the clean sheets when I heard the front door.

“Andy?” Ray shouted.

I didn’t answer, just went toward him. As I got closer, I heard him mumbling.

“Did he polish the legs of the couch, too? Jesus, I didn’t know that was a black entertainment system, I thought it was brown.”

“I was just as shocked,” I said smiling, when he jumped at the sound of my voice.

He turned and the expression on his face had me laughing. He just stared at me, but after a few seconds he chuckled.

“You didn’t have to do this, Andy.” He walked past me and placed a couple bags on the clean table. “Wow, in here, too?”

“I really did have to, Ray. It’s healthier this way and it smells good.” I sniffed dramatically earning another chuckle.

“I just have a couple more bags in the car, I’ll be right back.”

I began unpacking the bags while Ray brought the others in. He had a lot of pasta, two steaks, hot dogs, burger patties, basically bachelor food. If it wasn’t for Augustine’s, I would never have learned how to cook. There were a few things missing from some recipes I knew, but maybe I could make this work.

Honorary Bloggers K. Evan Coles & Brigham Vaughn: Food Talk + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Food Talk

by K. Evan Coles & Brigham Vaughn

As we discussed topics for this this blog post, the conversation got derailed (as it often does) by talk of food. First K. Evan mentioned that she was making overnight oats. This segued into Brigham’s dinner plans of turkey burgers with curried mayo and garam masala roasted potato wedges. From there it went into a discussion about what Brigham should do with a bunch of milk that needed to be used up before it went bad. Homemade ricotta cheese and pumpkin rice pudding were discussed and recipes researched. We debated the merits of bubble tea, tapioca pudding, and Champorado, a Filipino rice porridge made with cocoa powder and coconut milk.

We have conversations like this often, both for IRL purposes and for character writing. In the end, we realized we might as well write a blog post about food, one of our mutual loves. After all, clearly our minds were on the topic, so why not focus on something that we clearly spend a lot of time talking about.

K. Evan calls herself a “super food fan” and Brigham is a self-described foodie. Both of us enjoy both cooking and baking as well as eating, and especially sharing the food we make with others. Our newsletter even has a section for recipe sharing. We wholeheartedly enjoy others doing the cooking, too, especially foods we’re not easily able to make ourselves. To us, food is just all sorts of fun.

We’ve had to research a different genre of recipes for “The Speakeasy” books, namely cocktails and mocktails. The characters in the books frequent an uptown speakeasy in Manhattan called Under, and the bar becomes a sanctuary of sorts for a growing circle of friends to connect and share their experiences. Under serves as both hang out and haven for the characters, and the drinks served there and throughout the plots are as varied as their personalities.

Some of our characters want something fabulous with four liquor and a fancy garnish, like the Lita Grey Cocktail. Others crave a more straightforward kind of drink, like the Cuba Libre or a great Scotch served neat. We also write characters who abstain from alcohol and some who drink sparingly to avoid medication interactions. For them we’ve become acquainted with lots of gorgeous mocktails and infused waters, many of which have migrated into our personal lives (neither of us finds writing while imbibing actual alcoholic cocktails to be particularly productive).

To be sure, our books contain references to food, too. Our characters cook with and for each other, and some do a little more teaching if they find their partner in crime is best known for burning water. The characters definitely dine, too, and enjoy sharing meals in groups. Some of the characters are even willing to set their differences with friends and family aside—at least for a little while—when it comes time to cozy up to the table for some good food and conversation.

Food is so often a universal language that brings people together and helps them connect. The connections in our books might occur over a boisterous dinner featuring a big group eating homemade Guinness beef stew, but they might also happen in a more intimate setting, like an impromptu picnic of cookies and beer for two on someone’s half made bed.

We can go a little overboard with the descriptions, which we suspect occurs if we’ve been writing while hungry. As our beta readers go through a book, they often make suggestions to trim a section that involves food or remove some of the details of a meal the characters are eating. We writers then typically debate the comments at length before we cut anything out. Because food.

We know there are readers out there who are much less interested in every last detail of the food and drinks the characters enjoy, so we want to keep it balanced. Setting the scene is important, but we also want the scenes to help develop the characters and move the plot forward. In the end, we want to tell a really great story, and we do our best to determine how many words we spend on everything in it.

Incidentally, we have plans for a book about a chef in the near future. Our tendencies to go cheerfully overboard with the food talk may come in handy then!
