Exclusive Excerpt from Sticky Fingers

by Davidson King

I found everyone in the dining room polishing crystal. “Hey there, Maddox,” Tomas said. “Gilly’s ordering pizza tonight.”

There was nothing wrong with that. “Great.” I surveyed the pieces of chandeliers, vases, candlesticks, and bowls. “Need help?”

Kyle was wiping one of the baubles but almost dropped it at my offer. “You’re gonna clean?”

Tomas chuckled. “Don’t let the fancy suit fool you, kid. One thing about the boss man you need to know, he won’t ask anyone to do something he’s not prepared to do himself. It’s the Baron family work ethic.”

Kyle’s face softened, and he rewarded me with a gorgeous smile. “Well, then, sit next to me, boss man. I have some baubles you can rub.”

Everyone burst out laughing, but the heated look in Kyle’s eyes made my dick twitch. It was time to throw caution to the wind. I knew my family would approve of him. I always knew they wouldn’t of Nadia, but I was sure of him. I didn’t let our age gap bother me, or the fact he’d be leaving at the end of the summer to go hundreds of miles away. I couldn’t know if we were anything if I didn’t give this everything I had.

I sat next to Kyle, rolled my sleeves up and took the offered rag. When everyone was busy working and talking, I leaned into Kyle and whispered only for him to hear, “I’ll rub anything of yours you’d like.”

That time he did drop the bauble, fortunately it was on his lap. Continue reading

Exclusive Excerpt from Raven’s Hart

by Davidson King

Christopher Manos was a man who entered the room knowing he was powerful. He demanded the respect that came with it, too. His hair was slicked back, but there was a wave to it. He wore an expensive dark suit, and if it wasn’t for the soft look he gave whenever he was talking to Snow, he’d be scary. Snow wore a long shirt, jeans of some color, and sneakers. Total opposites in every way. Simon brought up the rear wearing clothes similar to Snow’s. His hair was just as dark as his uncle’s, but I had noticed his eyes were a lighter shade. There were many facial similarities to Christopher, but I suspected the ones I couldn’t place belonged to Simon’s mother who had passed of cancer when he was a baby.

“Good afternoon,” I said as I stepped closer to them, hand out hoping Christopher would shake it. He didn’t disappoint. “Hi, Simon.”

Simon lifted his head, his gaze leaving his phone for a moment. “Hey, Poe. You have a nice house. I had no idea you lived so far away.”

“No one did,” Snow mumbled but smiled when I shot him a glare. “What?”

“It’s necessary,” I answered Simon, who shrugged.

“Pops says that whatever the reason means a long and dark explanation.” That earned him a light slap from Christopher and a chuckle.

“You go do what you’re doing there.” He gestured to Simon’s phone. Continue reading

Advice For New Writers

by Davidson King

While I still sort of consider myself new, I also feel sometimes I’ve been doing this for ages. In the almost two years of publishing I’ve learned more than I have in many lessons at school. So I do have some advice for new authors who are just started out.

READ. I think this is my biggest recommendation. I wouldn’t have wanted to write so much if I didn’t read so much. I also wouldn’t have learned as much either.

NEVER SKIMP ON EDITING. Grammarly isn’t your editor. I see this a lot on social media and from new writers. They say they use Grammarly and use a proofreader. Please don’t do that. I know editing isn’t cheap but remember for so many people out there, they don’t know who you are and will only judge you by your writing. Make sure what they are reading is the best you can be.

RESEARCH. A great way to alienate yourself from people is to not research. Give something, someone, a group of someone’s, or anything really, the respect of understanding them and knowing the facts. I promise you someone will call you out on it if you’re wrong. There are so many resources and people out there to help there’s no excuse not to research.

WRITE YOUR STORY. You can get swayed by what other people tell you to write or how to turn your story arc their way. Don’t. You don’t plant a sunflower seed and decide halfway you want it to be a tulip and change it do you? Because you really can’t. Your story is in there and it won’t ever feel like your own if you don’t follow through with what you wanted.

PROMOTE. Be visible. Your readers matter so much and they are SO COOL! Seriously, I’ve met so many amazing people just my interacting with them. Do tours, events, whatever you can. Sometimes they will be a success and sometimes they will flop but they are necessary. More new writers are born every day and we are flooded with new books. Be bold and get out there.

Okay, I think that’s enough advice from me. Good luck out there.

Exclusive Excerpt from Snow Storm

Snow

“May I ask why you’re making a huge scene in the front of Mr. Manos’ house?” He wasn’t being kind to her, but she didn’t seem to care. She batted her eyes.

“Well, Billy, you see, I need to speak with one of the Manos men. My lovely Pixie is in quite a state and it’s all that Buck’s fault.”

Oh lord above, that dog was going to be the death of me.

“Well, I’ll be glad to help you if you can explain the situation.”

She nodded, clearly pleased she had his attention. “Yes, I asked Donald here if I could enter, but he said no, and that’s very rude.” She gave an unaffected Donny the stink eye.

“You have to understand why, Mrs. Markle. You’re hollering at the gate.”

“Yes, well, my Pixie just got back from the vet and she’s pregnant!” she screeched, and that was it. I couldn’t sit there.

“Now, you hold on a second, Mrs. Markle,” I said as I stepped out of the car. Ignoring Bill’s goddammit or Donny’s oh god, I got right up in her face. “Your French poodle is a little slut! She’s been shaking her fluffy ass all over the street. I saw her last week getting her ass tackled by Mr. Ryder’s bulldog, so don’t come here and blame Buck.”

“Why you little…” Yeah, Mrs. Markle went for my neck.

“No!” Bill shouted and stepped between us. “Mrs. Markle, there’s no way of knowing if Buck is the daddy.” That comment earned him a chuckle from Donny. “After the birth, we can all sit down and figure it out.”

“And what about her bills until she delivers?”

“If Buck is the father, then we’ll pay fifty percent after she delivers. But do yourself a favor and get your hussy of a dog fixed,” I snapped, and she began screaming again. “Open the gate, Donny, I’m done with the Poodle Madam.”

Going From Writer to Author

by Davidson King

I know, it’s such an odd subject. Aren’t writers already authors? For years I struggled with this. Of course, I was always writing from a young age. Little stories forever hidden away in composition notebooks away from prying eyes. They were safe in my bookshelf and for me only. I called myself a writer and a dreamer.

As I got older, I was asked what I liked to do in my spare time. I said I like to write, and the rebuttal was, “Oh, you’re an author?” And I always said no. Because nothing of mine was ever published and I felt the titles deserved their own respects. It wasn’t until I published, and I realized how much more went into getting a book out there than just the writing that authors deserved that title.

I don’t frown on people who say they are authors but have never published. Not at all. This is of course my own opinion. Each book goes through grueling situations. First, we surround ourselves with the passion of the written word, building our worlds, embracing our plot. Then comes the other fifty steps after you write The End.

The right cover, the blurb, the formatter, the choice of self-publishing or submitting to a publisher, wondering do you go Amazon exclusive or not, the editor, the betas, the proofreader, the funds to support it all.

Yeah, there’s a lot. And once you’ve driven that road you understand the difference between a writer and an author. I didn’t always but I do now.

The Hunt by J.M. Dabney & Davidson King: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from The Hunt

byJ .M. Dabney & Davidson King

After Ray left I found myself in desperate need to keep myself busy. My mind was my own worst enemy. Why would I think Ray would want to have sex with me? Kissing was one thing, but to see me naked? I couldn’t blame him for backing off.

Growing up kids at school called me In-The-Way-Shay because I was always so knobby and knocked things over. My mom told me I often reminded her of a giraffe. While that may not seem like an insult, it was.

Under Ray’s kitchen sink I was surprised not only to actually find cleaning supplies, but they were unopened. He was either the laziest, slobbiest person ever or he really was never here.

There weren’t any dishes in the sink, so I went about spraying down the counters, sink, all the appliances. When I was happy that the sheen of dust was gone, I went to working on the floors. While I cleaned, my mind raced to scenarios. Ray was nice, he didn’t outright say I wasn’t his type or that he thought I was weird. But I knew. Guys who fucked me did it in the back of clubs and with the lights off. Men like Ray never even looked at me twice. I wasn’t as beautiful as Francis was, but I wasn’t so ugly no one touched me. There was just that moment right after orgasm the other guy looked disgusted.

I don’t know why I flirted. Ugh! The more upset I got with myself the cleaner Ray’s house got. The musty, stagnant odor that once filled the air was replaced with lemon and lavender.

I meant it when I said I trusted Ray, I did. There was an honesty to him, a gritty, raw honesty. He kept people safe. It didn’t matter he said his past was shady. Who he was now was a good person. I was so conflicted.

I was in the room Ray assigned me tucking in the clean sheets when I heard the front door.

“Andy?” Ray shouted.

I didn’t answer, just went toward him. As I got closer, I heard him mumbling.

“Did he polish the legs of the couch, too? Jesus, I didn’t know that was a black entertainment system, I thought it was brown.”

“I was just as shocked,” I said smiling, when he jumped at the sound of my voice.

He turned and the expression on his face had me laughing. He just stared at me, but after a few seconds he chuckled.

“You didn’t have to do this, Andy.” He walked past me and placed a couple bags on the clean table. “Wow, in here, too?”

“I really did have to, Ray. It’s healthier this way and it smells good.” I sniffed dramatically earning another chuckle.

“I just have a couple more bags in the car, I’ll be right back.”

I began unpacking the bags while Ray brought the others in. He had a lot of pasta, two steaks, hot dogs, burger patties, basically bachelor food. If it wasn’t for Augustine’s, I would never have learned how to cook. There were a few things missing from some recipes I knew, but maybe I could make this work.
