Honorary Blogger H.J. Brues: How to Get a Yakuza Tattoo – Excerpt + Giveaway!

How to Get a Yakuza Tattoo

by H.J. Brues

  1. Call it by its name. You may know them as “yakuza tattoos,” or “these-cool-tattoos-with-dragons” but they are neither an exclusive yakuza thing nor are dragons always depicted in them—sorry to burst your bubble, but one of the most common creatures inked in traditional Japanese tattoos is the mighty… carp. So, the proper name of this style of tattoo is irezumi, which means “ink insertion,” duh. If you are feeling highfalutin, though, you can always call it horimono,“carved or engraved stuff.”
  2. Choose your motif well. And I don’t mean because tattoos are for life. If you tell an irezumi master that you want something to reflect, say, your outstanding stealth in combat, you may end up with the gorgeous design of a… rat. For life.
  3. Give the artist free reign.  Don’t insult Sensei by showing him the exact design you’ve envisioned drawn in stickman style on a paper napkin. Let the master be masterful, and you’ll end up with a work of art on your body. The only drawback is that you can’t pass this collector’s piece on to your heirs, or sell it in a pinch, or donate it to a museum—unless you’re okay with flaying, that is.
  4. Be explicit about your no-no’s. Let the artist be creative, but don’t forget to politely mention you’d rather not have whole Buddhist prayers running the length of your arms, entire schools of fish  swimming across your chest, peonies blossoming from your nipples, or chubby kids riding your back–I mention this last one because you may be familiar with Kintarō as a cool character from Mortal Kombat, but as the Japanese folk hero that he is, a tattoo master is more likely to depict him as a big red roly-poly toddler hugging a giant carp. You get the picture—literally too.
  5. Learn to meditate. That’s the traditional Japanese way of dealing with pain. Because, yeah, there will pain. Lots of pain. Japanese tattoo artists are very fond of tebori, which means, um, “hand carving.” If you’ve ever started sweating after taking one look at that awkward contraption called a tattoo machine or have ran for your life when someone called it a tattoo gun, you might faint at the sight of the irezumi master’s tools of the trade. They will look rather minimalist, but I doubt you’ll appreciate the aesthetic value of a row of steel needles attached to pretty bamboo or bone handles. So, ifs you’re not feeling your usual samurai-stoic self, don’t hesitate to get a prescription for Tylenol—or anything stronger short of cocaine. Sensei will politely ignore your weakness while he carves away with his pretty needles.

I hope this advice will help you if you ever decide to get an irezumi tattoo—even if it helps you decide not to get it.

About Yakuza Courage

7Ex-Navy SEAL Brendan O’Farrihy enrolls in kendo classes to investigate a Honolulu dojo acting as a front for a yakuza syndicate. Or at least that’s what Brendan’s client, Senator Harris, believes. Through his kendo instructor, the cocky, short-fused, gorgeous Kinosuke Yonekawa, Brendan learns the criminals who are supposedly using the senator’s son, Kenneth, to expand their activities into the US, seem to have severed any yakuza connections. The jaded, soul-scarred former soldier is captivated by the loyalty these gangsters show each other and the way they protect Ken like a tight military unit. Brendan wonders why the senator lied to him, and what the yakuza are shielding Ken from.

When Ken disappears, Brendan suspects foul play and decides to help the man he is falling for, Kinosuke, and his friends, find Ken. But when Kinosuke discovers Brendan has been on the senator’s payroll, all bets are off.

An Excerpt from Yakuza Courage

Brendan would have groaned when he saw that Kinosuke’s jacket effectively covered him to midthigh, but he was too busy keeping his mouth from hanging open at the sight of the intricate swirls of ink reaching down to the slender knees.

Why hadn’t he expected it? He knew yakuza usually had tattoos—he’d seen Matsunaga’s and even Harrris’s through Big B’s camera—but somehow, he hadn’t imagined Kinosuke with one of those full-body frescoes. Maybe it was because the kid Kotarō had mentioned Kinosuke sported a tattoo under his hair, and it had sounded so extreme at the time that Brendan hadn’t thought there’d be more ink in any other parts of this gorgeous body.

But there it was, ink in extraordinary hues fanning out to Kinosuke’s inner thighs where it ended abruptly in thick, round-tipped bands of dark blue that made a stunning background for the storm that raged over the rest of Kinosuke’s skin.

There were clouds of white and blue, strokes of intense red lightning, and the masterful shading that almost allowed Brendan to feel the strength of the winds blowing everywhere in that vibrant scenery.

Kinosuke groaned and tore at the strings of his jacket, Brendan’s hands helping to pull the white garment open right until the moment when he got the first glimpse of what lay underneath.

“Fuck me raw,” he cursed, his eyes roaming about in an effort to capture all there was to see—the long, flushed cock that stood out proudly from a nest of black curls, the blue dragon that sprung from behind turbulent clouds, one claw hovering over Kinosuke’s pubes while the other stretched upward as if to thwart the advance of a mighty red dragon descending on him from across Kinosuke’s chest, a ball of red fire preceding his advance, the movement of the magnificent beasts creating the storm that raged all over Kinosuke’s body.

Honorary Blogger JL Merrow: The Damaged Hero + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

The Damaged Hero

by JL Merrow

Hi, I’m JL Merrow, and I’m delighted to be here with the Blogger Girls today, where I’ll be taking a tongue-in-cheek look at that much-loved character in romance: the damaged hero.

Who can resist a Man With a Tragic Past? Battered and bruised by the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune, he’s just hurt_comfortv2gagging to have his boo-boos kissed better. And we all know where that leads! 😉

Of course, there are many different types of damaged hero. Here are a few I’ve written about, and I’m sure you can think of plenty more:

1. The Wounded Soldier

Ah, here’s a bullet-proof trope if ever there was one. (Sorry. I have poor impulse control!) He’s a soldier, so he’s a strong, manly man who’s been injured in the course of protecting the weak. He may be stoic, or he may be bitter—at the start of the book—but we all know that by the end, love will have helped him come to terms with his altered life. And there can be something very seductive about a guy who refuses to let physical damage affect his spirit.

In Permanently Legless, I had poor Chris lose both legs in Afghanistan—but he didn’t lose his strength of character—or his sense of humour. Chris’s character was inspired by real-life British soldiers I read about who’d lost limbs while serving yet still displayed incredible courage and humour.

2. The Betrayed Lover

Poor love. Up to his armpits in trust issues, and who can blame him? He laid his heart at some undeserving cad’s feet some time before the book started, only to have the rotter stomp all over it. No wonder he’s dragging his feet over getting together with Hero #2, even though, as the reader knows, this guy is a thoroughly nice chap who’ll never let him down.

tragic pastv2Robert in Caught! starts the book by swearing off men for the next thirty years, although *spoilers!* once he meets Sean, it doesn’t take long for his resolve to waver! 😉

3. The Widower

He doesn’t have to have actually been married to the guy, of course. Particularly in historical fiction, where it would be more than a little tricky. And illegal. But a man in mourning—especially if it’s long after most people would think it’s time to start moving on—has certain attractions, and it’s not just all the soulful looks. First, he’s shown himself capable of deep love and commitment—and second, who wouldn’t like the challenge of getting the guy out of his widower’s weeds? 😉

Philip in Poacher’s Fall has been a virtual recluse since the death of the man he loved in the Great War, but Danny soon coaxes him out of his shell. And Ted in Trick of Time is not only in mourning for his lover, he also has elements of #1, as he’s yet to make a full recovery from his injuries in the car crash that bereaved him. (I feel like I should apologise to him…)

4. Down and Out

Not so much damaged as disadvantaged—although the two often go hand in hand—he may not actually be homeless, but he still hasn’t got two brass farthings to rub together, poor lamb. He’s been down on his uppers so long, his feet would make a podiatrist weep. In extreme cases, he’s been forced to survive by trading the only commodity left to him: his body.

This, of course, is the basis of the classic Cinderella story—although our updated version is likely to come with a healthy dose of cynicism, so prepare for Prince Charming to be put through the wringer in proving his devotion. We find Jem in Trick of Time in such a  situation—although curiously, this impoverished Victorian rent boy still isn’t as damaged as his lover, Ted (I’m so sorry, Ted!)

5. The Amnesiac

What on earth happened to this guy? Nobody knows, least of all the man himself. In extreme cases, the poor love hasn’t even got a name to call his own. Maybe it was a bump on the head. Maybe something so traumatic he’s blocked out all memories to protect himself. Maybe something even more sinister, if this is sci-fi and there happens to be a mind-wipe machine handy.

Everyone loves a romantic hero with a touch of mystery about him, and mystery is something this guy’s got in spades. Feel his pain as he struggles to find out what happened to him—and whether he’s one of the good guys or not. I have to confess, this is a personal favourite, although I didn’t get around to writing it until Paul in Fall Hard took a tumble down a rather scenic waterfall in Iceland.

Of course, there are many more types of damaged hero, for example the abuse survivor, or the man forced by circumstances to deny his sexuality. Serious issues, but stories about them can be intensely moving and uplifting—and isn’t that what we read romance for?

Question: Do you have a favourite trauma (if you’ll forgive the phrase!) you like to see your hero overcoming? I’d love to hear from you!

About Caught!

11You can run from the past…but the past runs faster

Shamwell Tales, Book 1

Behind Robert’s cheerfully eccentric exterior lies a young heart battered and bruised by his past. He’s taken a job teaching in a village primary school to make a fresh start, and love isn’t part of his plans. But he’s knocked for six—literally—by a chance encounter with the uncle of two of his pupils.

Sean works in pest control, rides a motorbike, and lives on a council estate. On the face of it, he shouldn’t have anything in common with Robert’s bow-tie, classic-car style and posh family background. Yet Robert is helpless to resist Sean’s roguish grin, and a rocky, excruciatingly embarrassing start doesn’t keep the sparks between them from flaring.

Despite Robert’s increasingly ludicrous attempts to keep his past where it belongs, his past hasn’t read the memo. And soon his secrets could be the very things that drive Sean away for good…

Warning: contains the alarming misadventures of a pest control technician, a stepsister with a truly unfortunate name, and a young man who may have more bow ties than sense.

GRL Blog Tour: RJ Scott – Finishing Your Reading + Excerpt & Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Finishing Your Reading

by RJ Scott

Thank you to Blogger Girls for hosting me today!

Getting to Chicago involves a 10 hour flight. Ten hours of sitting in the same place *boring*. I can’t sleep on planes, and there is a long gap to be filled between meals! I try reading, and I even had the cool thought I could write, but it just didn’t happen.

One thing that helped was the films on the small video player. Lots to choose from and at last I could start watching films that were on my *can I be bothered* list, and then stop them ten minutes in if I didn’t like them. Silver Linings Playbook was one of those films. It also meant I could re-watch films and fast forward them to the good bits. All the Chris Evans parts in Captain America, all the Chris Evans parts in Avengers Assemble (are you sensing a theme here?).

One thing I can’t bear to do is to give up on books. I think that if I am drawn to start a book, then I owe it to the author to finish it. Some books throw you into a story and you are gripped from page one, others are a slower burn. Some start with an established couple, some have the heroes not meeting until a third of the way in. Some are insta-love, some have love not even being mentioned until the last chapter. I want to give the author a chance to pull me in and I love the moment where the hook grabs me and hauls me in. I have only DNF’d (Did Not Finish) a handful of books.

Do you do that with books? How long do you give a book before it becomes a DNF. Do you give up on a books? Or, on the other hand do you have books you revisit and you know exactly where your favorite scenes are?

About A Reason To Stay

A Reason To Stay (Heroes #1)Sometimes the wars you need to fight are the ones you left at home…

When SEAL, Viktor Zavodny, left small town America for the Navy he made sure he never had a reason to return for anything other than visiting family. He wanted to see the world and fight for his country and nothing, or no one, was getting in his way. He fights hard, and plays harder, and a succession of men and women share his bed.

But a phone call from his sister has him using his thirty day down time to go home instead of enjoying his usual thirty nights of random sex and sleep.

What he finds is a mystery on the Green Mountains and the only man attempting to make sense of seemingly unrelated deaths. His childhood friend and first love… Lieutenant Aiden Coleman, Sheriff.

There were reasons Viktor left his home. Not least Aiden Coleman with his small town innocence and his dreams of forever. Now Adam and Viktor need to work together to save lives and prove there is a hero in all of us.

When it’s done, if they make it out alive, can Aiden persuade Viktor that he has a reason to stay? Maybe forever?

The sequel, Last Marine Standing, will be out October 8, 2014.

An Excerpt from A Reason To Stay

He scooted up so he was sitting on the pillows and watched, amused at the fact that the husband and wife team he had joined in with last night were getting hot and heavy right in front of him. She held out her hand, Anna or something. Viktor waved her away, and dismissing the need for a shower, he dressed and left the room.

“See you around, soldier!” the husband, Mark, shouted after him as he left the suburban middle-class home in Suffolk, Virginia.

“Sailor,” Viktor muttered. Then he pulled the front door shut and climbed into his Tahoe. The couple hadn’t been all that bright, but the husband was built just right for Viktor to get a hold of. Clearly they didn’t understand Viktor’s explanation of who he was when he was attempting to get the three-way. Typical.

He dialed his sister’s phone, and she picked up almost immediately.

“Viktor,” she stammered. Instantly Viktor was on high alert. He forced aside all possible worries and simply listened. “Ben had an accident, he’s in the hospital.”

“What happened? A car?”

“No. He was out on the mountain, found this morning. He’s unconscious, and he has a broken ankle, hypothermia, and a head injury.” She caught a sob. “What do I do? Why would he be out there?”

Viktor turned the key in the ignition and said nothing. On the mountain? That didn’t make sense.

“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” he said firmly. “Call me if anything changes.”

He didn’t want details. He just needed to get there.

Honorary Blogger Bryan Keating: Paused Individuals Ready to Move Forward + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Paused Individuals Ready to Move Forward

by Bryan Keating

Hello!! First, I would like to say thank you to the generous Blogger Girls for taking a chance on a young, first-time writer and letting me spread the good word about my passion, my writing, and letting me introduce my novel Paused on their popular website.

I’m so fascinated by the newest community I’ve recently been introduced to: the M4M Reading Community. Honestly, I thought being thrown into the LGBTQ community at a young age was hard to grasp, boy, was I ever wrong! While writing my first novel, Paused, I was gladly letting loose on some sex scenes within my book, a bathhouse scene in particular has blessed me with many blushes from some readers not familiar with the genre. The community, however, wow! Upon reading some of your work, I was shocked! I was like, damn, my next one I can really go all out! The readers who have reached out to me have inspired me to continue to writing and be very upfront and honest in future erotic scenes.

I would like to personally invite all of you to read Paused, as it is my precious child in my young life. The story is based on true events. The characters are my friends and frenemies. The book is now my way of life. As a writer and artist, it is my goal for the world to see my work and it be archived in the record books. I wish to have you take a wild ride from your life into my world. Engulf your mind in insanity, addiction, sex and love.

I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you with your comments, suggestions, and support. Together, it is our duty to really embrace the M4M novels and raise them into mainstream awareness.

About Bryan Keating

Bryan Keating, or alternately and more commonly known as Mickey Drake, is a 24 year old self-published author and Chicago native. After being relatively sheltered for most of his youth, Bryan eventually would go onto attending Columbia College Chicago where he would gain the professional skills for writing to match with his unique talent. Throughout his college experience and finally being fully introduced to the LGBTQ community, he began writing about his adventures, perils, and loves which continue to inspire his writing today. Thus he created and wrote Paused, a novel based on true events.

Bryan’s passion for writing tales within his community, the LGBTQ community, stems from his sudden release into the gay community and love without much prior knowledge. He was, as the new world around him: reckless, ruthless, and inviting. Through Paused, Bryan hopes to make an example of his experiences through his character’s stories. Whether that example is to be feared, confused, erotic, or enthralled is entirely up to the individual reader.

Bryan now lives in Los Angeles, California where he continues to write each day. He is still inspired by those he meets along his journey in life and is drafting the sequel to Paused, expected to be released next year (2015).

GRL Blog Tour: Devon Rhodes – Always Looking Ahead + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Always Looking Ahead

by Devon Rhodes

Thanks to The Blogger Girls for having me on today to talk about one of my favorite topics—the GayRomLit Retreat! ☺

It occurred to me this summer that while most authors going to GRL were still considering what to order or bring or buy or pack for this year’s GRL in Chicago, I might be one of few already putting plans in motion for 2015’s GRL…wherever it might be! Let me explain.

UnconventionalWomen_GRL_ABQI’ve been to all of the GRLs so far, and really don’t see myself ever NOT going. I love GayRomLit. I remember even before the first one in New Orleans when Carol and Ethan first conceived of the idea, and that was the first conference or meeting of any sort that I ever went to after becoming a writer. So it will always have a special place in my heart.

It was also a place where I met so many people that I now consider to be personal friends, including people I now collaborate on projects with and write with, including Carol Lynne, Amber Kell, Stephani Hecht, Jambrea Jo Jones and of course, my co-author of many books since, TA Chase. And yes—it still makes me fangurl sometimes thinking that I’ve actually worked with all these women!

I was shortly after that first GayRomLit that I had a dream. Literally. I dreamt that I’d been in an anthology with a lot of the great authors I’d gotten to know in person at GRL. So the next morning, I posted on FB to a few of the authors I’d dreamed of about how I’d had this dream, and wouldn’t it be fun to make it a reality?

Well, that got things going, and since we’re all published at Totally Bound, I approached them with the concept. They were as excited as we were about it, and let us have a great deal of control over the concept, making sure we had a release date before the following year’s GRL in Albuquerque.

T.A. Chase & Devon Rhodes
All of the authors I asked said yes right away, even though I know most of them had a ton of other projects going on, and many don’t write short stories very often. And I just love how they all let their own unique style and creativity come out to play. Other than the fact that we all write MM and wanted a general, central theme of conventions, we all sort of went to our strengths as far as subgenres and heat levels with that first anthology. That was Unconventional At Best.

We really loved the result, so after we got some good feedback after GRL Albuquerque, we sat there having lunch in a Hard Rock restaurant the day GRL ended and starting throwing ideas around for an anth for the following year in Atlanta. For that year, we thought it would be fun to write romances set in the conference hotel. Since Carol had been there, she helped us with details, and we wrote stories about fictional attendees and hotel employees finding love, and shared our characters in each other’s books. Unconventional in Atlanta was a lot of fun for us and thankfully our readers enjoyed it as well! ☺

GRL Atlanta wasn’t even over when we started talking about the next year’s anthology. We came up with a slightly darker turn, setting it in an alternate reality where mobs and gangs ruled Chicago in modern times. Carol unfortunately had to bow out for the third anthology—such a busy woman!—but the other five of us came up with a chronological series of stories following a group of men trying to save their city in An Unconventional Chicago.

So here we are, a month away from GRL Chicago…and we’re already looking ahead to GRL 2015 and planning yet another Unconventional anthology. We’re going to go paranormal for this next one and two of the authors have already started their stories! We have a concept that we think will work wherever the announced location is, so no reason not to get a jump start! ☺

I’m just so honored to be working with these fabulous women, and I really can’t wait to see everyone next month. To kick off the celebration early, I’d love to give ebook copies of all three Unconventional anthologies away to one lucky winner!  Just follow The Blogger Girls’ instructions to enter, and good luck! ☺

❤ Devon

About An Unconventional Chicago Anthology

An Unconventional ChicagoNo Bravery by T.A. Chase

A man looking for revenge discovers a man who wants to save a city.

Farris O’Laughlin has been back in Chicago for five years. He’d spent thirteen years before his return in a mental asylum after his brother had him committed for ‘insanity’. Farris plots revenge in the way he knows will hurt his brother the most—bringing down the family business.

Darien Shaunessy is Farris’ new driver and guard. He’s around to keep Farris in line…or so Farris’ brother thinks. Darien has his own reasons for working for the O’Laughlins, but Farris wasn’t part of his plan.

When two men from different parts of the city come together, powerful men could lose their wealth and control. And the lovers could find bravery they never thought they possessed.

Love Don’t Die by Jambrea Jo Jones

They might die, but their love never will…

Moran Schultz was tasked with getting information from one ward to another. He was all for helping his brother make Chicago a better place. What he wasn’t expecting was his lover to show up after a month of no contact.

Dutch Luciano isn’t going to let Moran go without a fight. They love each other and the gangs in charge of Chicago aren’t going to keep them apart.

Can Moran let Dutch back in or is it too dangerous? More than Chicago is on the line. Will love be strong enough to survive?

Passion Under Fire by Stephani Hecht

Can their love overcome the danger coming their way, or are they doomed to die?

Georgio is the third son in a powerful mob family, but he has never agreed with their violent or illegal ways, so he joins the resistance in an attempt to right the wrongs that his family has done. But, by doing so, he puts himself at great risk of getting caught. And if he is, his older brothers would have no problem ordering him executed, their sibling or not.

Tito is a runner for the family. While he hates the gang, he has a sick brother at home to take care of, so he has to take the job because it pays so well. The last thing Tito expects is to form an attachment to Georgio.

While Georgio tries to deny his feelings for Tito, he finds himself drawn to him as well. But, if they were to be caught together, they could be killed on the spot. Will their love be able to survive so many obstacles? Or can they find a way to happiness?

Ganging Up on Love by Amber Kell

New love can bring new dangers.

When Dirk volunteered to take the information to the resistance, he didn’t know he’d find his perfect match in their leader. Determined to find a place among them, he offers to help wherever he can.

Leon has always been alone, afraid of trusting anyone with his affection. When the visitor from Ward Three comes in with important information to bring down the mob bosses, he doesn’t know how to handle their instant attraction.

When outside dangers threaten to tear them apart, will their new love be enough to keep them together?

Bonfire Heart by Devon Rhodes

Sometimes fires burn and destroy, but from the ashes, new growth can heal and cleanse.

Thierry Alexander is the deputy mayor of Chicago, a city he loves but can’t save on his own from the corrupt political system. His assistant and lover, Eduardo, is also known as Cesar, the head of the underground resistance movement. He has been working behind the scenes for years and finally gets what he needs—enough information to get the US government involved and take down the criminal elements strangling the city he loves.

But they need to act fast because legislation is about to be enacted that will give rise to social and ethnic purging in Chicago. Not knowing who they can trust, they will have to put their faith in one another and risk everything to save a city.

An Unconventional Chicago is available at Totally Bound, Amazon, ARe and B&N.

Honorary Blogger Angelique Voisen: On Cross-Genres and Writing Erotic Romances + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

On Cross-Genres and Writing Erotic Romances

by Angelique Voisen

Firstly, I’d like to thank The Blogger Girls for giving me the opportunity to do a guest post. Today, I’d like to talk about writing cross-genres and my recent release, Taming Icarus.

One of my close friends asked me recently why I’ve shifted my focus from writing dark fiction to writing smut, a.k.a erotic romance. My answer was pretty simple- writing erotic romances gives me the freedom to experiment with sub-genres, a freedom I won’t be able to do elsewhere. Also, putting aside some time at the end of the day to write romantic stories with happy endings is a relaxing experience after a stressful day at work.

They make me happy, like sugar-free donuts (I’m a type-2 diabetic).

Here’s a little interesting bit about myself. I’m from Singapore and I grew up with a strict Catholic upbringing. This is probably why I get a sadistic kick telling people I write erotic romance in my free time. Sadly, I’ve given up long ago trying to explain what’s the difference between erotic romance and erotica.

My background also explains why I can’t stick to a particular genre or specialize in one. After I’ve published my first erotic romance, Taming Icarus (The Spectrum, #1), in June, I’ve since experimented with a number of LGBTQ pairings and sub-genres, including erotic sci-fi and steampunk romance.

I’m still getting a hang of my new surroundings and I admit my writing isn’t as refined as I’d like it to be, but I’m not discouraged by rejections or negative reviews. I’ll keep on writing as long as there are people willing to read my work. Jumping from writing dark fiction to erotic romance has been a constant eye-opener, but some of the same rules still apply.

Researching the market and knowing the genre is a given must, at the same time, I occasionally need to remind myself why I started writing erotic romances in the first place. Simply because I enjoy writing and sharing my stories.

About Taming Icarus

iIn the alternative world of New Furor, there are the rubes and the Spectrum Wielders, gifted men and women capable of wielding great magic with jewels. Chris Skinner, Icarus, unfortunately belongs to a Spectrum class born and bred for service. She also belongs to an abusive Spectrum Wielder who would do anything to avenge her dead sister, even if it destroys Chris and herself in the process.

Chris’s owner leaves a reckless trail of vengeance, triggering a confrontation with two of the city’s powerful enforcers. Gus Terrel and Iris Donovan are unlike any Spectrum Wielders Chris has ever met. They only have one interest, and it’s not taking Chris’s owner into custody. They want Chris badly, but Chris mistrusts their intentions. Why anyone would want second-hand property is beyond her.

Acquiring their third is harder than Gus and Iris ever imagined, but they would do whatever it takes to make Chris exclusively theirs…no matter the cost.

Honorary Blogger J.C. Mells: Part-time M/M Romance Writer, Full-time Fag-Hag + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Part-time M/M Romance Writer, Full-time Fag-Hag

by J.C. Mells

I think I may have thrown some of the fans of my Pierced Series (Paranormal Romance Series) for a loop when the fifth book, Napoleon – a standalone novella – was an M/M Romance.

Surprise!

None of my other books are M/M Romances, I don’t consider myself an M/M Romance writer, (although I may write a part 2 to Napoleon due to popular request), and I don’t even read that much M/M Romance (for me, someone with a five-book-a-week-habit, that means I binge-read three or four in a row every couple of months, which might be more than some, I suppose).

So, why did I write Napoleon?

Of course, one of the main reasons is that Napoleon Charming was a stand-out, popular character from my series.  I wanted to give him his own story – and he’s gay – so it shouldn’t have been the surprise it was to some of my fans that he was going to fall in love… with another guy.

The second reason is that I may not read M/M Romance on a regular basis – but I feel like I sure do live it most of the time!  They always say to write what you know!

I have a “thing” about me – some may say an aura – that appears to attract gay men in my direction.  I’ve had this “thing” since I was about fifteen/sixteen.  Whatever it is, gay men flock to me as if I were an ice-cold, frothy, margarita at the Nine Inch Males Tavern at happy hour.

My best friend of twenty-three years is gay, my former roommate of ten years is gay, I was married to a gay man for three years (that’s another story for another day!) – and to top it all off, when I moved away from my entirely gay and lesbian social circle in New York and moved to Las Vegas, within thirty minutes of arriving in Sin City, the very gay property manager at the community I was moving into invited me out to a gay bar called Charlie’s that night. Please note that I am a straight female and made no mention of the fact I had a gay social circle back in NY, and when I later asked Jack why he’d invited me out, his response was that I had that fag-hag vibe.  Needless to say, I did go to Charlie’s with Jack that night, had a few too many happy hour cocktails, while watching all denominations of gay men from Latino homeboys, to bears, to twinks to good ole country boys to manly men to flaming queens ALL line-dancing (yes, I said LINE-DANCING) to Donna Summer songs on the dance floor.  I’d love to tell you how I ended up doing the Can-Can with a line of drag queens – but then I’d have to kill you.

But I digress…

Cut to almost ten years later and the cute, skinny-jeaned Columbian that Jack picked up that night and ended up falling in love with (they moved in together soon afterwards and were together for nine years) was recently caught cheating.  The drama that ensued is worthy of a day time soap.  So why not read more M/M Romances?  I LIVE IN ONE!

I may not specialize in M/M Romances, but I feel I have several of the credentials necessary to write one (at least I HOPE I do!).  My mom, who has never read an M/M Romance in her life, read Napoleon and upon finishing it, turned to me and said, “It’s surprisingly good.  It’s just like when a boy falls in love with a girl.”

Yep.  I sighed, rolled my eyes at her and slapped myself in the head.

I may not be a full-time M/M Romance author, but I am a full-time fag-hag and ALL my books are gay-friendly.  Six books in and I’ve yet to write one that didn’t have a gay or bisexual character that didn’t steal the show (lesbian and trans to come in future books, I’m sure).

Then I thought, for all the Pierced Series fans who refused to try Napoleon due to its subject matter (and I can tell from sales there were a few), if even one first-timer had the same, positive, reaction as my 84-year-old mother, then I’m VERY glad I wrote it.

J.C. Mells, Contemporary and Paranormal Romance author, full-time fag-hag, part-time M/M Romance writer – attempting to convert one mainstream reader at a time.

About Napoleon

3This is a standalone novella. You do not have to have read other books in the series to enjoy it.

Napoleon Charming-Balak has been crushing on the “exchange student” that’s been staying with him for the last six months. The object of his crush: Sixten Dahl, a straight boy that seems to get his kicks from flirting with, then torturing, Napoleon in the cruelest of ways. Is it any wonder Nap, and his best friend Moused, are high-tailing it to New York City as fast as they possibly can? If there’s one thing Napoleon is hoping for, it’s that life in the Big Apple will be exactly what his self-esteem needs to get over the Swedish tease that has been tormenting him all summer long.

If he could only stop thinking about Sixten long enough to enjoy it.

Honorary Blogger S.B. Hadley Wilson: From Spreadsheets to Bed Sheets – Excerpt + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

From Spreadsheets to Bed Sheets

by S.B. Hadley Wilson

Never in a million years did I think I’d write gay erotica. Never in a million years did I think gay erotica would be so much fun to write.

Prior to now, I’d always wanted to be a writer—any kind of writer. When I first tried my hand at public relations in New York in the late 1990s, all I could afford to eat was a bagel for lunch and a pack of cigarettes for dinner. That wasn’t living. So I watched my dreams of becoming a writer fly out the window of my four-story walk up apartment, and travel down an unexpected path, from New York to San Francisco, where I ended up in data analytics. For years, I enjoyed working with facts and figures: gathering and massaging data, creating a value story for clients. I assessed everyone’s worth but my own. Until one birthday: “If I can be successful at a job that I enjoy, there’s no telling what I could do with a job that I love.”

So I quit—and committed myself to finishing a book in a year.

That one-year commitment turned into two-and-a-half years of writing, traveling, writing, traveling. I became a master at procrastination and produced a novel that should’ve been a novella. As any novelist knows, word count is often a factor in how books are classified and submitted to agents, but in obtaining the words for a novel, I diluted the tone of my story.

So I decided to do an overhaul to my book. But as I pondered what to change in the manuscript, a submission call for a gay erotica anthology distracted me. I wrote “The Return” in a couple of weeks and fell in love with the characters. And when the editor of the anthology told me that I didn’t make the publishable top 15, but I did make the semi-final top 30, my confidence rose a little bit and I was relieved to still have the rights to the story. So I released “The Return” myself.

I think it’s short and sexy.

The response from people has been hilarious. Some people read it twice in one sitting and have asked me to write a sequel so they know what happens to the three characters—including the straight brother. Some people have refused to read it because they think the sex scenes are fantasies of mine (maybe!) and don’t want to know that much information about me. Positive or negative, I love feedback, so please feel free to connect with me after you’ve read it.

About The Return

11Sam is looking forward to his college reunion in San Francisco and staying with Brian, his college crush and roommate. But when Sam comes together with Jacob, Brian’s stunning younger brother, he is shocked by how closely they resemble one another. Immediately, Sam finds himself questioning his friendship with Brian, ambushed by feelings of nostalgia—and unrequited love.

Erotic and vivid, “The Return” is a short story intended for mature audiences.

An Excerpt from The Return

Here Sam was, back in San Francisco.

He paid the driver $50 and climbed out of the taxi.

It was August, and as he stood near the corner of Dolores and Seventeenth Street, he relished the cool, sixty-eight-degree weather and the skyline void of skyscrapers. He had been in Manhattan too long.

He straightened his back, waiting for his suitcase to be pulled out of the trunk, and listened to an invisible saxophonist play the theme song to The Godfather. Without any real reason, Sam decided the musician was the same man who used to repeatedly play the Star Wars theme song when he was last in town. He liked to believe the saxophonist had an affinity for the 1970s, the decade Sam was born in, and played the songs in his honor.

At thirty-one, Sam was surprised ten years had passed since college. Looking up and down the street where he had once lived with his college buddy Brian, he felt as if nothing had changed. He felt twenty-one again, crawling out of college, where he spent his four years in a hangover, corrupted and invincible. If he had not taken that management consultant job in New York, he and Brian would probably still be roommates.

Sam remembered sitting in the living room on the day he had accepted the New York job, sometimes looking at Brian, sometimes looking at the floor, thinking about how they had made a pact to live together until one of them got married, and then how he had squirmed with nervousness telling Brian he was moving to New York, his heart racing.

“This will always be your home,” Brian had said to Sam that day, and again on the day he moved out.

Sam had squeezed him good-bye, tighter than he expected. On the surface, as an only child, Brian had been like a big brother to him. They had loved and protected each other. No problem, right? Wrong: Sam was in love with Brian. During the awkward years of being a young gay kid, moving from Minneapolis to San Francisco for college for the sake of being in the nation’s gay mecca and developing his sexuality, Sam had felt comfortable around Brian. Brian had been the first straight guy never to mock him. But after four years of friendship, Sam had finally accepted the fact that Brian would never be interested in him, so he had left.

Today, Sam was back in town for their ten-year college reunion. It was his first time visiting San Francisco since he had moved, as well as his first time seeing Brian.

Sam’s shoes and the wheels of his suitcase scraped the cement stairs as he ascended to the stoop outside the building’s foyer. He rang the doorbell.

“Sam?” Brian said on the intercom, waiting for him to answer.

After a few tense seconds, Sam smiled and said, “Yes, it’s me!”

The wrought-iron gate buzzed and then clicked open, and Sam crossed the black-and-white tile into the dark foyer. He turned the knob to Brian’s door, but it was locked. He left an impression of his sweaty palm on the knob. He shifted his weight from left to right, grasping the handle of his suitcase firmly, waiting, wondering if Brian would hug him first.

When Sam heard footsteps from behind Brian’s door, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his belly. His chest felt heavy. He had wanted to see Brian all these years, but life had happened and time had passed. And now that the moment was here, he wished he had another second to compose himself. But when the door opened, it was not Brian—it was his youngest brother, Jacob. Sam had not seen Jacob in years. Ten, in fact. The last time they had seen each other, Jacob had been eleven and had come with their other two brothers to San Francisco for Brian’s graduation. But Jacob was grown-up now. He was a younger reflection of Brian.

Jacob stood a foot away from Sam in the foyer. His face was stretched into a brilliant smile. With one hand, he brushed his blond, overgrown bangs to the side of his forehead while he leaned against the door frame. His white, spectacular briefs hugged his perfect and otherwise-naked body, rendering Sam speechless and causing him to think he was hallucinating.

The saxophonist had gone silent.

Sam recalled Brian’s mentioning a few years earlier that Jacob was gay, and that he had left their hometown, Indianapolis, and moved into Sam’s old bedroom in their San Francisco apartment. But Sam had never imagined Jacob would look like a demigod, a statue standing on a podium. He had never imagined he would be looking at the cut body of his best friend’s brother and finding it hard not to stare at his tight white briefs. He tried to concentrate on Jacob’s tremendous green eyes, but his curiosity got the better of him, and he glanced down at Jacob’s junk, wondering what it smelled like. When he saw the impeccable outline of the head of Jacob’s cock, Sam’s dick twitched. When he raised his eyes again, he noticed Jacob’s lips, wildly pink, still turned upward.

PART TWELVE

The ghostly smoke ring of cats flew up into dust motes, choking the air as Wolf sprinted past—or even possibly through—the dead woman in the room. A brisk chill hit his skin then grabbed at his marrow and for an instant, Wolf feared his bones would crack open at the icy clamp on his body. His breath bloomed into a chilled plume and when Wolf sucked in a surprised gasp, the air shivered through his lungs, piercing the warmth in his chest. Another step forward and he’d broken free, shaking off the glacial freeze slowly peeling away from his skin.

Meanwhile, the shadow outside of the window turned and bolted back into the night.

Wolf hit the sunroom’s outer door running, shoving at the latch hard and hoping it was unlocked. The door flew wide, slamming open and striking the exterior wall, its glass window rattling and buckling under the force of Wolf’s exit.

Funny thing was—the shadow certainly was a hell of damned more solid than Deidre and about as graceful as an elephant in a tutu.

A row of hedges took the brunt of the intruder’s flailing, his churning legs destroying the neatly lined up greenery. With the moon playing peek-a-boo with a thickening Eureka fog, Wolf could only catch glimpses of his prey as they ran through the back yard towards the front of the house.

With only a few feet separating them, the shadowy form feinted about, zigzagging left and right in an attempt to avoid the large barrels Hazel’d set up on the side of her house to grow tomatoes and herbs. Successfully dodging the hazards of the herbal labyrinth, it was an old rose bush that proved to the intruder’s undoing.

A rose bush obviously out for vengeance and more than likely, manipulated by a very pissed off Deirdre.

The bush stretched out from its trellis, thorny tendrils snapping out to slap at the shadowy figure’s face and chest. Wolf caught the tail end of a bloom-rich whip across his cheek. It stung, opening up a cut deep enough to bring up moisture.

Sadly for him, the intruder didn’t get off as easily.

The trellised bush groaned and creaked, its branches bending across the walkway to grab at the running man. Stretched past their physical limits, a few thick stems broke, curved too far around for their heavy limbs to survive. They snapped, tiny shotgun booms as leaves and stem pieces showered down over the man. Too short to encase the runner, Deirdre had other plans for the sharp, prickly branches. One by one, the stems dove in, stabbing at the man’s exposed face and arms, rapid fire punches deep enough to leave gouges in his skin.

Screaming, the man’s mouth was speckled with foam and his eyes were bulging in the short time it took Wolf to reach the man’s side. He was young, barely into his twenties, and even in the faint light coming from the street lamps a few yards away, Wolf could see he was terrified. The smell of piss hit the air and a dark stain began to spread over front of the young man’s sweatpants.

“Deirdre, let him go,” Wolf muttered, grabbing at the branches. “Shit, I don’t know if you can hear me but… let him go. You’re hurting him.”

The whisper in Wolf’s ear was barely loud enough for him to hear over the frightened man’s screams but it was there, raspy and enraged.

“I don’t care,” she whispered. “He hurt Hazel.”

“You’re going to kill him,” Wolf pointed out, yanking his hand back just as a thick root broke open, its shorn, glistening end poised over the young man’s chest. “You’re going to kill him.”

“Then he’ll be dead. Like me. And then imagine what I could do to him.”

“Hazel wouldn’t want you to do it,” Tristan’s voice rang through the madness. He came through the front picket gate, the watery moon running silver over his pale face. “Please, Deirdre. She’d hate herself if she knew she was the reason he died. Even after all he’s done to her, she wouldn’t want that. Not Hazel.”

“No,” Deirdre’s voice echoed, gravel and velvet wrapped around deep sadness. “She wouldn’t.”

The branches stopped moving then in a slow churn, unraveled, dumping the young man onto the stone walkway below. Wolf lunged, grabbing the intruder then pulled him free of the trellis as Tristan awkwardly patted the house.

“For Hazel,” Deidre’s whispers began to fade. “But never….again…”

About Duck Duck Ghost

3Paranormal investigator Wolf Kincaid knows what his foot tastes like.

Mostly because he stuck it firmly in his mouth when his lover, Tristan Pryce, accidentally drugged him with a batch of psychotropic baklava. Needing to patch things up between them, Wolf drags Tristan to San Luis Obispo, hoping Tristan’s medium ability can help evict a troublesome spirit haunting an old farmhouse.

With Wolf’s sister handling Hoxne Grange’s spectral visitors, Tristan finds himself in the unique position of being able to leave home for the first time in forever, but Wolf’s roughshod treatment is the least of his worries. Tristan’s ad-hoc portal for passing spirits seems to be getting fewer and fewer guests, and despite his concern he’s broken his home, Tristan agrees to help Wolf’s cousin, Sey, kick her poltergeist to the proverbial curb.

San Luis Obispo brings its own bushel of troubles. Tristan’s ghost whispering skill is challenged not only by a terrorizing haunting but also by Wolf’s skeptical older cousin, Cin. Bookended by a pair of aggressive Kincaids, Tristan soon finds himself in a spectral battle that threatens not only his sanity but also his relationship with Wolf, the first man he’s ever loved.

Honorary Blogger Avril Ashton: My Coney Island Obsession – Excerpt + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

My Coney Island Obsession

by Avril Ashton

I’ve always been a fan of Coney Island. That Coney Island in New York. Brooklyn, to be exact. You see, I live in Brooklyn…I should say lived, since I just picked up the family and moved to Georgia on a whim a couple months ago. But I still feel like I live in Brooklyn.

So I’m fascinated by Coney Island. The Famous Coney Island with all its weird and terrifying attractions. All the bright sparkly things that keep pulling visitors in from all around the world year after year. My family and I used to just drive there almost every weekend—it’s about fifteen minutes away from where we lived. We’d go in the down season, during the winter months and sit on the boardwalk, look at the ocean, our toes freezing in the sand. Mostly for me, because I can’t stand to be away from it.

I don’t really know what about it that pulls at me. Maybe because it’s this huge playground where you feel like a kid again, no matter your age.

Coney Island makes an appearance in nearly all my books. If it’s set in Brooklyn, there’s a good chance one of my characters will make a stop in Coney Island for funnel cakes and a chance to ride the Wonder Wheel.

In (Watch Me) Break You, Coney Island does indeed make an appearance. But this one’s not quite like we’re used to seeing the amusement park. You see, Coney Island is in a tug-o-war. Two gang factions are fighting for the right to do their dirty deeds on its storied streets. Not many people get to see that side, the dark underbelly of what goes on behind the scenes of the pretty, happy place that smells of sea, cotton candy and hot dogs, and reverberates with laughter and squeals of frightful delight. Much of what you’ll read in (Watch Me) Break You is the real deal.

Names are only changed to protect the guilty.

About (Watch Me) Break You

(Watch Me) Break You (Run This Town, #1)They’re in a war for control of the streets, but love will be the ultimate prize.

Here comes trouble…

Men. Women. Drugs. Dima Zhirkov’s favorite things. Add in the element of danger and he should be right as rain. But not today. It’s not working, hasn’t for a long time. He’s grasping at the flimsiest of straws to prove he’s indeed strong enough to run his streets. Until he sets eyes on him. In the midst of a room full of strangers, Dima is drawn to a man as cold and dangerous as he’s beautiful. Captivated, Dima embarks on a ruthless campaign to get his new toy into bed.

Here comes the danger…

Xavier “X” Storm is content to pull the strings while someone else handles the day to day dealings of his gang, The Rude Boys. He’s after what Dima holds closest—the Coney Island streets. He contracts out the job of killing the Russian, except Dima isn’t that easy to kill. When he suddenly shows up in X’s path, tempting him to indulge in the dirtiest play, he finds Dima isn’t all that easy to shake, either. His cocky attitude and rough submission tempts X to go where he’d vowed to never return, and they plunge head first into an affair fueled by possessive obsession.

Run for cover

Sex and pain Dima can handle, and X delivers the most depraved kind. Their connection is explosive, their games addictive, but Dima can end it whenever he wishes. He doesn’t see that X is breaking him down, giving Dima everything he wants and even more than he ever thought to need. By the time he realizes who X is and what he wants, Dima is raw and bullet-riddled. It’s run or fight. And Dima doesn’t back down. Neither does X.

Warning: Includes strong BDSM elements, and reference to rape and sexual abuse.

An Excerpt from (Watch Me) Break You

The Dom didn’t stay in the room upstairs long. He came out a short time later and quickly descended the stairs like a man on a mission. Dima followed him into a bathroom and stood by the door as his new toy rolled up his shirt sleeves and washed his hands in a nearby sink. When he turned away to wipe his hands via the paper towel machine mounted to the wall, Dima stepped out from behind his hiding place.

His new toy didn’t seem surprised to see him. He gazed at Dima through the mirror. Cool. Unruffled. In control. It made Dima’s blood race. Made his palms sweat.

“What’s your name?” he asked. The man didn’t blink and Dima realized he’d asked his question in Russian. He repeated himself in English.

The man didn’t answer. He remained facing the mirror, head cocked at an angle, watching Dima watch him. Their appearances couldn’t be any different. The Dom with his coffee with milk skin, impeccably dressed in a blue shirt and black pants, and Dima with his wrinkled shirt missing buttons, the ragged holes in his faded jeans, black motorcycle boots and the taste of weed, alcohol and Sylvie’s pussy on his tongue.

“I watched you,” Dima said. He sounded…rough, words halting with need. “Downstairs. I want it.”

“No.”

Just one word, but it fired Dima like nothing ever had. He stepped up close, pressing his front to the other man’s back. He was hard, the other man. Brick. But so was Dima. Achingly hard.

“I want you.” Fuck. He’d switched to Russian again. “Give me what you gave her.” It was a demand, but Dima heard hollow need all over those words.

The man spun around, lightning fast, and grabbed Dima by the throat. Mother of God. His balls tightened, threatening to explode. By that. Just that. The man’s expression hadn’t changed Dima found when he peered up at him through his eyelids. Dima kept his hands fisted at his sides.

Waiting.

Body pulsing.

“Give it to me,” he whispered in Russian.

“Touch me again and I’ll break your fucking neck.” He slammed Dima into a stall door. The pain made pre-cum pour, wetting Dima’s boxers. He groaned. The man released him and was gone before Dima could gulp in air.

His heart pounded as he clutched the edge of the sink, breathing fast. He met his own wild gaze in the mirror, shivering at the hungry grin on his face.

A chase. He could do that.
