To Swear Or Not To Swear: Profanity and Dialogue in Historical Fiction

by JP Kenwood

I have been asked about (and criticized for) my deliberate choice to use a more modern dialogue style peppered with colorful curses for my current m/m historical fantasy series set in ancient Rome. Here’s the thing. Romans in the second century AD did not speak Elizabethan or Victorian English. They spoke Latin, a complex and beautiful language characterized by precise syntax, a rich vocabulary and practical directness. Latin emerged as an identifiable language around 1000 BCE in central Italy, a fertile region inhabited by a stratified, patriarchal society dominated by farmers and soldiers. In fact, many aristocratic Roman names derive from this agricultural heritage: Cicero (‘chick-pea’), Lentulus (‘lentil’) and Fabius (‘bean’).

Have you ever heard Latin spoken outside of some televised papal blessing on the steps of St. Peter’s in Rome? Unless you spend much time attending the most traditional of Roman Catholic masses, the answer is probably not. If you’re interested in hearing Classical Latin spoken, here’s a link to a short clip from the documentary, “The Destiny of Rome,” wherein Marcus Antonius speaks before the Senate: http://youtu.be/6_IPqniaZR0. The performer’s Latin pronunciation is crisp, direct and powerful. It’s actually rather sexy. However, that said, we don’t know exactly how ancient Romans spoke Latin. As with deciphering much about the past, scholars argue theories and make educated guesses. But they all agree that ancient Romans did not sound like characters out of Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” Sorry, Brutus.

But I’m off on a tangent. I chose to use a more modern tone for the dialogue in Dominus because I wanted these characters to sound not only direct and ‘Roman-like’ but also real. Not anachronistic, to be sure, but human. Familiar. In my own experience, readers of stories set in historical times become distracted or frustrated with wording that is forced to sound ‘historical’ with dialogue that is often clunky, obtuse, or flat out incomprehensible. I wrote my fictional Roman characters to sound as if they were actual people—which, to me, they are.

But what about all that swearing in your dialogue, Kenwood? Ah, yes—the fucks and shits and arses and cocks and tits. Here’s the deal. Romans swore. They swore a lot. You won’t find much profanity in the literary writings of Virgil or Tacitus (the latter fellow is a character in the Dominus series, by the way), but you will find delightfully bawdy language in the poems of Catullus and Martial and in the graffiti scrawled on walls throughout archaeological sites such as Pompeii. Just Google ‘obscene graffiti Pompeii’ and you will find a slew of sites with all the salacious details. In fact, the expression, ‘Speaking with Roman plainness,’ refers to the bluntness of the Latin language and the preponderance of obscenities. Romans didn’t beat around the proverbially bush. So Gaius Fabius (our bisexual MC in the series) swears, for shit’s sake. And, because humanity is nothing if not diverse, Gaius swears more than other characters, including his peers. He has a filthy mouth, the arrogant bastard.

One final note: my characters, especially the Roman characters, use English (as in England English) cadence and slang terms. For this I have no excuse except that for me, all Romans sound like the BBC Romans I grew up watching on the telly. Blame it on Clau—Clau—Claudius.

About Dominus

DominusIn AD 107, after a grueling campaign against Rome’s fierce enemy, the kingdom of Dacia, Gaius Fabius returns home in triumph. With the bloody battles over, the commander of the Lucky IV Legion now craves life’s simple pleasures: leisurely soaks in fragrant baths, over-flowing cups of wine, and a long holiday at his seaside villa to savor his pleasure slaves. On a whim, he purchases a spirited young Dacian captive and unwittingly sparks a fresh outbreak of the Dacian war; an intimate struggle between two sworn enemies with love and honor at stake.

Allerix survived the wars against Rome, but now he is a sex slave rather than a victor. Worse, the handsome general who led the destruction of his people now commands his body. When escape appears impossible, Alle struggles to find a way to preserve his dignity and exact vengeance upon the hated Romans. Revenge will be his, that is, if he doesn’t lose his heart to his lusty Roman master.

Dominus is a plot-packed erotic m/m fantasy that transports readers back to ancient Rome during the reign of the Emperor Trajan (98-117). This is the first book in an alternate history series—a tumultuous journey filled with forbidden love, humor, sex, friendship, political intrigue, deception and murder.

GRL Blog Tour: Lissa Kasey/Sam Kadence – Surviving GRL as an Introvert + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Surviving GRL as an Introvert

By Lissa Kasey/Sam Kadence

GRL is an event for people to meet, talk, and connect. The thought of which makes me want to stay home and read. LOL. I’m an introvert. And for all those extroverts out there, that means it takes a lot of energy to stay focused on anyone talking to me. It sort of makes me sleepy when someone is just going on and on. Not that it’s not interesting. It’s just I’m internal instead of external.

I’ve been to a few events this year. And it’s my first year being out there as two people: Lissa Kasey and Sam Kadence. I write both adult and YA, but since I skipped all events last year, this is the first time I’ve had to learn to sign two names. (It’s harder than you think!) I did Rainbow con this year which was small but had some great events for YA writers, so that helped. I also went to the DSP workshop which was bigger and a little more intense. I don’t mingle well, and sorry to any I may have offended with my awkwardness—sorry PD Singer.

This will be my third GRL. The first was the best so far, because it was small. I got to talk to people, there were events that I could do and not have to talk to anyone, and the hotel was easy to navigate so if I needed me time—which happens often—I could escape. The second year was a little bigger and harder for me to meet new people. I stuck with my group and avoided being social, but I was also going through other things that most of my followers already know about.

Didn’t attend last year so I’m pretty nervous about this year. Unlike most I don’t have a social anxiety disorder. I have a general anxiety disorder so everything makes me nervous. Not just people. My introversion just makes recharging after socializing harder. I know there are a lot of others out there like me. Folks who are social awkward, introverts, with a brain that runs away with them, and I can honestly say fun will still be had.

I’ve met some of the most amazing people at these conventions and some of my best writing pals. I shy away from the more outspoken folks because they have large crowds that exhaust me even from a distance, but I will still say hello and probably something stupid—this is an almost certain fact for the weekend. I’d love to talk with anyone about YA writing, Sci-fi, fantasy, or urban fantasy as there just isn’t enough in our genre.

You’ll probably find me hiding with people I know who started their journey the same time I did like Piper Vaughn, Poppy Dennison, or Xara X. Xanakas. I’ve made new friends among bloggers and writers who don’t mind being seen with me I think, and most of which I’ve met through online and GRL events. I always look forward to meeting others even when I stick my foot in my mouth.

For those who need time away but want to still feel like you’re part of the group, feel free to come sit with me and we can watch the rest in silence. No need to converse. A short recharge is better than none, right?

Honorary Blogger Joy Lynn Fielding: Don’t Mind Me – I’m Just the Writer + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Don’t Mind Me – I’m Just the Writer

by Joy Lynn Fielding

A year ago, I was asked if there were any genres I wouldn’t write.  I opened my mouth to say “Paranormal”, but before the words escaped, I thought better of it.  I didn’t want to hold myself hostage to fortune even though I knew I’d never write paranormal.

So how is it that, a year later, I’m five books into a paranormal series?  All I know is that I was in the shower one day and this shifter pack came to life in my head.  I wasn’t even thinking about shifters, just musing on the fact I needed to buy more shower gel before too much longer, and there they were – most of them fully formed, and each with a story to tell.

The Elk Ridge pack has turned out to be a rowdy, demanding bunch.  I suspect part of that is generic to shifters, as one of the things that Dave notes in Riding the Whirlwind is how shifters tend to buy into a macho culture.  His theory is that it’s because the territorial nature in their wolves is never far from the surface.  I agree with him, but would also add in the whole alpha concept, with its veneration of power.  As well as being rowdy and assertive, this lot also love the limelight.  I’ll be writing another character’s story and, before I know it, half of them have turned up in cameo appearances.

I mentioned that they’re demanding – Riding the Whirlwind is a direct result of that. When I started the series, I didn’t intend to write this book. I knew roughly what happened between Christian and Dave in their trip to New Mexico and thought I could cover it in a few lines in the last book. Big mistake. Christian was adamant that if everyone else was getting their own book, he needed one too.

Despite getting his own way, the stubborn cuss proved to be my most difficult character to date to write. I think it’s because he and I are so different in temperament – he’s short-tempered, aggressive, and confrontational. But no matter how much I wanted to wring his neck at times, he was right – he and Dave did need to tell their story. Had I stuck with my original plan of summarising the contents of the book in a few lines, they wouldn’t have reached the same emotional outcome they do when we actually see them go through the events. I also discovered things about them I didn’t know before I started it, like Christian’s less than flattering views on Canadian whiskey and quite how deep Dave’s mystical beliefs go.

Don’t tell any of them I said this, but it seems that sometimes the characters do know best!

About Riding the Whirlwind

Riding the Whirlwind (Strength of the Pack, #5)Five years undone in just five days.

Dave Mitchell and Christian Taylor are on a mission from their alpha—to discover what happened to a pack of Argent shifters thirteen years ago. Away from their pack and out of their usual routine, they find underlying tensions in their relationship coming to the surface.

When their investigation leads them to the resident pack, Christian seeks respite from his demons by throwing himself eagerly into the cage-fighting ring the pack runs. He knows Dave hates him to fight, but he also knows Dave will understand. Dave always understands.

But when Dave meets a kindred spirit among the pack members, all Christian’s certainties come crashing down around him. It becomes clear that their relationship might not survive this. And when things between them reach crisis point and the local pack gets involved, it may prove to be the death of more than just their relationship.

Honorary Blogger Chris T. Kat: How to Keep Your Sanity While Editing Multiple Books – Exclusive Excerpt + Giveaway!

How to Keep Your Sanity While Editing Multiple Books

by Chris T. Kat

Thanks to the Blogger Girls for having me back! Dreamspinner Press will publish my new release, Secret Energy, on August 29th. Secret Energy is a shape-shifter story, and the sequel to Secret Chemistry.

To date, Secret Energy is the longest book I’ve ever written. It’s also the one I’ve re-written multiple times. I knew the editing process would be long and exhausting but that’s okay, some books are like that. But… then I received an e-mail informing me about the start of the editing process on Secret Energy. So far, so good. Then, I received another e-mail, informing me about the start of the editing process on Tidal Change. In that very moment, I succumbed to a light panic attack.

Now, how did I keep my sanity?

  • Told my husband about it, while trying not to hyperventilate. I received an amused smile, and he said, “I guess you won’t be bored then.” I reciprocated with a death glare, which gained me a massage later that night. 😉
  • Bought some new books to read, so I wouldn’t think about the upcoming edits. Because pretending the edits won’t magically appear in my inbox is always so realistic, right? Anyway, I got loads of awesome books.
  • I wrote another book, hoping if I lost myself in that world, the edits wouldn’t show up in my inbox. Naturally that wasn’t the case but hey, I got lots of writing done while I waited on my edits.
  • The main reason why I kept my sanity was my editor Erika Orrick. She knew very well I might be overwhelmed with the editing of both books, so she staggered them. I was never without work for more than a few days but it was do-able. So there, an awesome editor is worth a lot!

What do you do when you’re overwhelmed by work? Push through or try to hide? Eat chocolate or go for a run? I’m curious to learn more about your strategies!

An Excerpt from Secret Energy

Robin held his breath as he waited for Tim’s reaction. He scooted closer to the bear, and the bear sat down behind him, resting his heavy head on Robin’s left shoulder.

Tim shifted so fast that Robin recoiled. He pressed his bare back against the bear’s massive bulk, savoring the soft touch of fur on his skin. A wave of need rolled through him, rushing from his head to his crotch, pooling there. Robin covered his hardening erection as inconspicuously as possible.

“No,” Tim stated in a low voice. “No, he’s not. He’s a bear.”

Robin kept his eyes averted as he answered, “I think he’s a were-bear.”

Someone giggled, and Robin redirected his gaze toward Jay and Tim. Jay had shifted to his human form and lay on his side, trembling and white-faced. He was also the one emitting the giggling sounds, even though he tried his best to stifle them. Robin’s lips twitched into a smile.

Tim stepped over Jay and knelt next to him. The protective gesture wasn’t lost on Robin.

“Stop giggling. What’s so funny here?” Tim muttered.

“A were-bear. It rhymes.”

Confusion showed on Tim’s face as he said, “Great. So my brother is a poet and an idiot.”

“Hey!” Robin bristled.

The bear moved behind him, sliding even closer. Robin pushed back a little, relieved at feeling his mate’s presence. He still didn’t understand why the bear didn’t talk to him, but the silent support helped, more than it probably should given that he didn’t know anything about his mate, not even his name.

“I don’t believe he’s your mate,” Tim said.

“Why not?”

“He’s a bear.”

“A were-bear,” Jay corrected.

Robin caught Tim throwing an irritated glance at Jay. As quickly as it appeared, the glance disappeared because Jay was trailing his fingertips up and down Tim’s right forearm, calming him.

“He’s not going to mate a bear, nor is he going to mate a were-bear.”

“That’s not your decision to make,” Robin shot back hotly.

“You’re my little brother. Of course I’m making the decision.”

Stunned silence settled around them for a moment. The bear huffed and lifted his head from Robin’s shoulder. Robin immediately grabbed for the bear’s neck to pull him back. Jay coughed harshly, drawing Tim’s attention to him. Behind Tim’s back he gestured toward Robin’s crotch.

Gulping, Robin adjusted his legs so his half-hard cock was hidden from view. He mouthed ‘thank you’ to Jay. The bear sniffed, his head lowering until he came close to Robin’s erection.

“Uh, no sniffing there now,” Robin whispered. When the bear didn’t react, Robin added a desperate “Please.”

The bear moved his head away, though he swiped his tongue over Robin’s nipples as he did so. Robin groaned, closed his eyes, and pressed back into the wooly fur. Blood pulsed in his cock, filling it.

“Do that again,” he demanded.

“What the hell are you doing?” Tim yelled.

Robin’s eyes flew open. Shit! Just for a few seconds, he’d forgotten where he was and, more importantly, who was there.

“I-I…,” Robin stuttered. His cheeks burned.

“Stop this crap and come over here!” Tim shouted, the anger contorting his face.

“You stop this damn awful big-brother show,” Jay interrupted.

Tim swiveled his head around to look at Jay. “What?”

“Robin found his mate, and we won’t act like jerks and tear them apart. I’m not happy about being injured, but Robin’s right, I shouldn’t have attacked right away.”

“But—”

“Tim, you fought for me even though I’m a hybrid. Why is it so difficult for you to accept Robin’s mate isn’t a pure werewolf either?” Jay asked so softly Robin had to strain his ears to hear him.

“He doesn’t resemble a wolf in the slightest!”

Jay shrugged. “Neither do I.”

“Yes, you do, and anyway, that’s beside the point.”

“Is it? Why?”

“Because….” Tim tucked a stray strand of Jay’s chestnut hair behind his right ear before he bent over to kiss Jay tenderly. When he straightened up again, he said, “You should shift back. The earth is moist around here, and you’re already freezing.”

“I will if you promise to stop being such a prick.”

The bear snorted, and Robin coughed. When Tim glared at them, Robin whispered, “Shh, don’t set him off again.”

The bear rubbed his head against Robin’s face, eliciting a contented sigh from Robin. He felt safe with the bear surrounding him. His mate would protect him no matter what, Robin was certain of that.

“Robin?” Jay called out. “Go with your mate.”

“What? No! I have a say in where he goes—”

“Shut up, Tim,” Jay responded. He accompanied his response with an exaggerated eye roll, causing Robin to chuckle.

“Jay! He’s my baby brother, and I—”

“You will act like the great big brother you are and let him go with his mate. We can’t change the fact his mate isn’t a pure werewolf, Tim. Your parents are working hard on installing new laws and changing people’s perspectives. They’ll find a solution,” Jay said, although his voice didn’t hold much conviction.

Honorary Blogger Rory Ni Coileain: Traditional Fae Compared to the SoulShares Series – Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Traditional Fae Compared to the SoulShare Series

by Rory Ni Coileain

First, I’ve been a die-hard fantasy and science fiction addict for at least the last 40 years. I’ve read so many different “takes” on the Fae, the Sidhe, the Celtic supernatural in general that it’s hard for me to pin down any “traditional” lore to compare my writing to. Put another way, I have an incredibly rich and varied traditional palette to choose my colors from, but I’m not exactly sure where any individual color came from!

And there wasn’t any moment at which I sat down with my Muse and said “Okay, here’s what we have to choose from, which way are we taking this? Oh, and would you mind putting some trousers on, at least until we finish hashing this out? You’re quite distracting.” My Fae are at the same time completely out of my own imagination/my Muse’s dictation, and the product of those 40 years of gorging myself on everything from The Tragedy of the Children of Lir to Charles de Lint.

That being said, I’d say the strongest similarities between my work and traditional lore are in the personalities and nature of the Fae. A Fae in his or her own world, which they call the Realm, is pretty much completely self-absorbed, except for an inborn love for and loyalty to blood kin. The Realm and the human world were separated more than two thousand years ago, but Fae still have fond memories of the days when they could mess with handsome and beautiful humans at will. They’re capricious, unpredictable, pleasure-loving, and essentially immortal – they heal quickly from any wound that isn’t mortal by nature, but given that the only art form anywhere near as popular as sex is vendetta, there are a fair number of mortal-type wounds keeping the population down.

The biggest difference between my writing and traditional Fae lore (apart from the fact that my Fae don’t have wings – but they do have really cool faceted irises, like genstones) is probably the nature and workings of magick in my world. In my Evil Day Job, I’m a lawyer and an editor, which means I need my details to work, dammit. And since magick is at the core of my storyline, I needed a magickal system that clicked. (That’s not to say I have everything plotted out to a ‘t’, mind you – unfortunately, I keep getting lovely inspirations that really should have at least been foreshadowed two or three books ago. Someday I’ll rewrite…) My Fae don’t “cast spells” – they channel magick, sometimes in ways that are natural to them because of the Demesne to which they belong (Earth, Fire, Water, Air), and sometimes with the help of a learned channeling (similar to a spell). Magick is a living force, and while it follows certain natural laws, one gets the impression that it does so grudgingly, and occasionally just goes off and does whatever the hell it wants to. It pervades everything in the Realm, living and non-living alike. And living magick has a source, the energy that runs through ley lines. Think of it like gasoline and crude oil (if I ever come up with a more eco-friendly explanation, I’ll let you know).  Ley energy is the raw form of magickal energy; once it’s been processed (which occurs naturally in the Realm, and in the bodies of individual Fae under the right circumstances), it becomes living magick, and can sustain life and fuel channelings. (Oh, and then there’s elemental magick, which is a separate force that can be used by some Fae (the Noble families) and which basically forms a very few Fae (the Royals are essentially elementals. Fun times.) The problem in my world is that thousands of years ago, in order to save the Realm from destruction by the Marfach, an evil entity that devours and warps and corrupts living magick, the Fae were forced to seal off the Realm from the human world – and the ley energy is an indivisible part of the human world. So ever since the Sundering, the Realm and all its inhabitants have been living on their stored magick, with no access to the ley energy. And by the time the SoulShares series starts, this is beginning to cause problems.

About Hard As Stone

16097830Tiernan Guaire is a Fae in exile. Forced from the Realm into the human world for the unimaginable crime of a brother’s murder, he lives by a century-old vow, to trust no one, and never to allow himself to love or be loved.

Kevin Almstead has just lost his future, to a vote of the partners at his law firm. Trying to escape for an evening, he ventures into Purgatory, the hottest all-male nightclub in Washington, D.C., where he allows himself to be seduced by a stranger with long blond hair and ice-blue eyes.

Drawn into a Soulshare bond with his intended one-night stand, Tiernan soon learns that the most ancient and evil enemy of the Fae still walks the human world, and it will stop at nothing – certainly not Kevin Almstead – to possess the magick of a Noble Fae.

An Excerpt from Hard As Stone

Tiernan stirred, muttered under his breath, the first signs of distress he’d shown since falling asleep. Passing out. Whatever. Kevin sighed, resting a hand lightly on the blond’s smooth chest; in short order, he found himself running his fingertips lightly over his lover’s chest, tracing the lines of the muscles, and then down, a fingertip traveling along the intricate tattoo over his hip. Tiernan wasn’t buff, not like some men were and Kevin himself tried to be. Lean, hard-bodied, almost impossibly fit. And with that long, unruly blond hair, and his crystalline blue eyes, Tiernan would turn heads in rooms full of men or women. And no doubt had.

Mine.

The Fae rolled onto his side, away from Kevin; chuckling softly, Kevin settled himself behind his lover, glancing over the shoulder in front of him at the bedside clock. He could still get almost three hours of sleep if he was lucky. He wrapped an arm around Tiernan, nuzzled into the curve where neck met shoulder, breathed in the scent of wild hair and sated male body and honey, and closed his eyes. So this is what magic smells like.

About Gale Force

1Conall Dary is the most powerful mage born to the Fae race since the Realm was parted from the human world, over two thousand years ago. But that very power condemns him to a lifetime of celibacy, because sex calls to power, and he has power enough to drain a world. When he refuses to use his talents for a Noble lady’s petty revenge, he finds himself shanghaied to the human world, his soul torn in half and his magick blocked.

Josh LaFontaine is the beautifully inked owner of Raging Art-On, a Washington, D.C. tattoo and piercing parlor. While taking part in New York City’s Pride march with a former lover’s dance company, his world changes forever when the man of his dreams materializes out of nowhere at his feet. Josh’s sensual and loving touch, the first Conall has ever known, may be enough to give him back the magick he’s lost. But before they can complete their Soulshare, a terrible accident leaves Conall bodiless, lost, and invisible, to everyone except – maybe – the human with whom he shares a soul. But Josh will need to find him before the ancient evil of the Marfach does or everything they have – and more – will be lost.

An Excerpt from Gale Force

The sense of relief as he got out of the taxi was like nothing he’d ever felt before, and even knowing most of it wasn’t his own didn’t make it any less overwhelming. Only the presence of the foot traffic in and out of Purgatory kept him from falling to his knees in gratitude, maybe doing some pavement-kissing.

Well, that and a sense of haste only slightly less urgent than a cattle prod. He fumbled the keys off the hook at his belt and unlocked the deadbolt, then keyed in the combination on the touchpad, wincing as the tiny crystalline tones tried to pierce his eardrums.

Are you sure you can do this, lanan? There might be another way. Just let me think, now that I can.

Josh shook his head. Letting himself into the small client lounge in the front, he locked the door behind himself and made straight for the tattoo studio. “No time. Every minute you’re disembodied makes it less likely you’ll ever get back, you said so yourself. And me…” He paused, his hand on the doorknob of his studio. “I’m not sure how much longer I can stand this.”

About Deep Plunge

iFor the last six hundred years or so, the only things reminding Lochlann Doran he’s a Fae have been his faceted aquamarine eyes and the fact that he can’t die. He’s been a wanderer for so long in the human world – over two thousand years – that he’s lost his magick, including the gift of healing that goes along with being a Fae of the Demesne of Water. Finding his SoulShare might get it back for him. But it might kill him, too.

Garrett Templar has been living on borrowed time, in a sense, since he was eighteen, when one of the johns he entertained to pay the bills while he danced at Purgatory infected him with HIV. It was always supposed to be a “manageable” disease, though, at least until a cure was found. Except he’s just found out that the virus in his system has inexplicably mutated into full-blown AIDS, and no known drug cocktail can even slow it down.

And when Lochlann and Garrett find each other at last, on Purgatory’s dance floor, the only thing as urgent as their need for one another is the hunger of an ancient evil to do whatever is necessary to possess Lochlann’s magick…

Shit. His grip tightened on the strap of his bag, ready to swing it — or ditch it, if it looked like that would help him escape . And for one sick, sweaty, gut-wrenching moment, he was ten years old again, hearing the kids closing in behind him, knowing there was no way in hell he was going to get away without another split lip, ruined shirt, blackened eye. Almost hearing his mother’s voice again. Garrett Lee Templar, I swear, you find more trouble than any ten other boys ever dreamed of. Do you think I can just make new clothes appear out of thin air?

“Garrett?”

He recognized that voice from somewhere. Slowly, he turned. And stared up into eyes that gleamed blue even in the crappy light from the streetlight on the corner.

“Lochlann?” He hadn’t had to rent his ass out for a while now, but the idea of a john following him home from the club still made his skin crawl. Yet there was something about those eyes, something different.

No. Fuck that shit. You get hurt the worst when you let yourself hope.

About Firestorm

Firestorm (SoulShares, #4)Rian Sheridan is a foundling, a Northern Irish Catholic corner boy whose world was destroyed in fire, and reborn the same way, beside an Orangemen’s bonfire last July the Twelfth. A consuming, dimly-remembered pain in his past calls to him, taunting him, daring him to find it and lose himself to it in the S&M underground of Belfast.

Cuinn an Dearmad is the last surviving Fae Loremaster, and he’s just seen the beginning of the death of the Realm, the haven of the Fae race. The only hope of stopping it starts with him finding the Prince Royal of Fire he stole from the cradle, and lost in the human world, many years ago. He has a few guesses about where that hope ends, and he doesn’t like any of them.

Rian and Cuinn are an impossible pairing, two SoulShared Fae. Any two Fae will strike sparks, but these two Fae are a conflagration. Unable to stand one another, yet drawn into an escalating series of sexual collisions, their passion will either save a world or destroy it.

He gave up on trying to sleep, rolling onto his back and lying sprawled out in the great bed fit for a king. Or a Prince. Shite. He didn’t want to be a fecking Royal. Whatever that meant. But if there was one thing he could say he’d learned in life, it was that what he wanted had fuck all to do with what happened to him.

Though ever since the Twalf, last summer, there was one thing he nearly always got, when he wanted it. The thrill. They’d thought to break him that night, and perhaps they had, but after the breaking he’d been made anew. Into a man who craved what the bastards sought to shame him with, and who used them, in the end, more cruelly than they had used him. After all, he could use them, and others like them, any time he liked.

Honorary Blogger Nic Starr: Why Is It So Hard to Open Up to Those We Love? + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Why Is It So Hard to Open Up to Those We Love?

by Nic Starr

Hi everyone, I’m Nic and I’m thrilled to be here with The Blogger Girls. Thanks you so much for having me.

Recently I caught up with a close friend, in fact one of my oldest and dearest friends. It’d been a while since we’d had a chance to really talk—all too often real life gets in the way—so we’d had the odd dinner and phone call but not really talked. We hadn’t spoken about the important stuff, like the details of the marriage break up she is currently going through.

But this time we did talk—we also laughed and cried and drank lots of wine—and this time she shared some of what was happening behind her usually happy and outgoing façade. Enough time had passed that my friend was able to look back on her relationship with some objectivity, distancing herself from the more emotional side.

The recurring theme was the communication within her relationship. Or to be more accurate, the lack of honest communication. It turns out that both my BFF and her husband and spent a lot of time—as in years—thinking they knew what the other was thinking and what the other wanted. Surprise! They had no idea of what the other one really thought.

You want to live overseas and love the glamour of international travel and the expat lifestyle – WRONG

You love the challenge of climbing the corporate ladder and get immense satisfaction from your career – WRONG

The result? Years of ‘sacrificing’ to give the other partner what they thought they wanted. Years of ‘supporting’ each other. Years of sacrificing and supporting to do something neither of them were really passionate about doing. All which lead them to the point they are now.

How can two people who love each other get it so wrong? Surely open communication should be easy? But it’s amazing how often it’s not.

In my novella, It’s Not Easy, miscommunication rears its ugly head, as does making decisions based on what other people think—or more correctly, what they assume the other person thinks. Ben is making decisions driven by protecting his family and Spence is making decisions based on his love for Ben. Their hearts are in the right place, it just takes a while for them to realize there are other paths than the ones they’ve chosen.

I hope you enjoy Ben and Spence’s story.

About It’s Not Easy

It's Not EasyBen Cooper gave up on following his dreams to keep the peace in his family. Best friend Spencer Henderson has always been Ben’s rock. For Spence, who is in love with Ben, supporting Ben always came first, but as Ben starts to date their friend Suzie, Spence has to think of himself for the first time. The ramifications of one fateful night means leaving their small town may be Spence’s only option to protect his broken heart.

With trouble escalating at home and Spence out of reach, Ben finds it harder to cope. Without Spence’s help, Ben’s life may finally spiral out of control.

Honorary Blogger Cat Grant: Ready For Some Hot Fighting Men?

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Ready For Some Hot Fighting Men?

by Cat Grant

Are you ready for some Devil Dogs? Or Navy SEALs? Or Army Rangers? Or any other kind of hot fighting man with a heart of gold?

Up until last year, I’d never written anything military-themed that actually showed combat scenes. I’ve never served in the military. My dad served in the army during WWII, but aside from that, my family has no history of military service. What if I got the details wrong? The prospect of writing combat seemed strewn with so many pitfalls, I decided it was best to avoid it.

Then I wrote two Navy SEAL books with the awesome L.A. Witt, and well, I couldn’t fudge the research any more. In fact, I actually enjoyed the process. I found myself astounded, impressed and touched by stories of the men who put themselves through months of hell training for this highly dangerous job. And I knew I wanted to help tell their stories in my own way.

So I invited a few other authors to join in, and voila! A brand-new box set was born!

The set won’t be available until October 13th, but until then, feel free to drool over that handsome guy in the dog tags and wifebeater (who’s showing us his heart, btw) and get ready for some hot, rough & ready military man love this October!

Honorary Blogger B. Snow: Bedtime Stories (Anthology) and A New Twist on an Old Tale + Giveaway!

Bedtime Stories (Anthology) and A New Twist on an Old Tale

by B. Snow

Thanks very much to The Blogger Girls for giving me the chance to talk about Bedtime Stories, which came out this past Wednesday! When Anna Martin contacted me about being part of an anthology with a few other authors, I thought she’d made a mistake, but no, she’d read my story in Cross Bones (Dreamspinner Press, 2011) and liked it. I haven’t actually read the other stories in the anthology yet, so I have no idea what they’re about, but mine is a combination of a couple of story ideas I’ve had floating around my head – a father who falls in love with his kid’s babysitter, and a guy who really, truly, honestly does not know he is gay.

I should probably post an excerpt of that story because that’s why I’m guest blogging, but I have something different in mind for this post. >:D

Last month when I was at Prism Book Alliance to talk about the Project Fierce Chicago anthology, which benefits Project Fierce Chicago, I offered up a synopsis of Cinderedgar, i.e. the Cinderella story if it were about gay guys. At that time, I asked for suggestions for the next gay retelling of a fairy tale, and a commenter named Allison suggested “Beauty and the Beast”.

I started thinking about what I knew of the story and how it would translate to two men. A story jumped into my head, but it’s much darker than the fun, flirty Cinderedgar. It’s about a young man who was born with every advantage. (I don’t know his name yet, so let’s call him “Y”.) Y’s parents were wealthy and good-looking, and in time Y grew up to be very handsome and ready to enjoy his family’s money. He and his friends would go from club to club in the evenings, taking their pick of the best-looking men, to enjoy in back rooms or to take home for the night.

Their dalliances never lasted long; Y grew bored easily and didn’t mind if it took a couple hundred bucks to get the entertainment to leave. If said entertainment complained – or worse, professed any sort of emotional attachment to Y – household security would arrive within seconds of being called, ready to remove any unwanted items from Y’s suite of rooms.

Y never considered that his actions might be cold or cruel; he was twenty-five years old, gorgeous, still in his sexual prime. Men lined up for a chance to suck Y’s dick or to have him plow their asses. He was doing them a favor. If they didn’t like it, they could go find someone with a lower attractiveness quotient.

One night Y and his friends decide to go slumming. They walk into an older gay bar, very different from the flashy clubs they’re used to. The room goes quiet, and Y preens, knowing that all eyes are on him. He struts the length of the room, calling out how each customer offends him: “Old, old, fat, old, too hairy, bad skin, bad teeth, get a nose job,” and so on, his friends laughing uncontrollably, until he gets to an old man leaning on a cane.

“I don’t even know where to begin,” the old man says. “Maybe manners, first.”

“What are you talking about? God, I hope I die before I get as old and ugly as you,” Y sneers.

“You’ll see.” The old man pulls the lavender carnation from his lapel and offers it to Y.

Y slaps it out of his hand. His friends laugh again and then they pull Y out of the bar, complaining about the smells and the people.

The next morning when Y wakes up, he can’t move at first. His legs and arms feel strange, and he starts to panic, thinking he’s had a stroke. He manages to roll onto his side and push himself up, and that’s when he sees what’s happened. Somehow, overnight, he has gained a good fifty pounds. There’s a heavy layer of flesh all over his body that wasn’t there the night before, and where his six-pack used to be, now there’s a keg. He heaves himself out of bed and hurries to the bathroom, a scream building in his throat. It escapes when he sees his face now neatly divided – the top half covered with acne, the bottom half, with a thick, dark beard. Another scream as he grabs at the top of his head where wavy blond hair used to be. Now it’s a shiny, bald pate. It’s as if his hair darkened and migrated to – oh, dear God – his shoulders. And back!

His screams bring household security, who draw their guns on the apparent stranger in the house, then his friends and parents, who cannot hide their revulsion. Once everyone has calmed down and accepted (however difficult it may be) that this….creature….is indeed Y, they leave him. His friends can’t look at him without disgust. His parents escape with the excuse of hiring a private investigator to get to the bottom of this. After they go, Y crawls back into bed, sobbing. There, he finds a lavender carnation. He slaps himself in the face several times, trying to wake himself up from what has to be a horrible nightmare, but eventually he has to admit that it’s all real.

After borrowing some clothes from the gardener (his own no longer fit), he has his driver take him back to the bar from the previous night. The old man is there. In his lapel is another lavender carnation, a twin to the one Y is grinding to pieces in his fist.

“You did this to me!” Y screams at him.

“Yes,” the man answers.

Y goes silent. He didn’t really think any of this was real. He’d hoped he was hallucinating. But somehow it was real, and the old man was responsible. He swings his fist and catches nothing but air.

Now the old man is across the room. “You should be more careful who you piss off,” he tells Y. “I decided to teach you a lesson by turning you into everything you hate. You can continue to hate men who are fat or hairy or ugly – all by your standards, mind you – or you can grow up and see beyond the physical. The choice is yours.”

“I’ll kill you!”

“You’re welcome to try,” the man says, smiling. “But if I were you, I’d concentrate on breaking this curse.”

Those words stop Y. “How do I do that?”

“By learning to love yourself, and getting someone else to love you.”

Y snorts. “Fine. I’ll work out, take the weight off, wax this gross shit off my back. It’ll be like before. I loved myself, and everyone else loved me, too.”

“Young man, you could not be more wrong, on both counts.” The man met Y’s dagger-glare with a calm gaze. “I wish you the best of luck. Oh, did I mention that you have until your next birthday to accomplish your tasks? If you succeed, you may return to your previous appearance, or whatever form you desire. If you fail….”

“What?”

“Well, I’ll have to think about that. But it won’t be pleasant.”

——–

So that’s about all I have so far, a combination of story and synopsis. The next part is about how Y’s friends ditch him and his parents don’t want to be around him, so they hire a personal assistant who is really more of a babysitter. Beau is 40 and needs the money badly enough that he’s willing to put up with a horrible, angry, spoiled brat.

What do you think? Should I write it out as an actual story? I want to; it turns out that reworking fairy tales is hella fun, and there are all sorts of things to explore here, but I worry about copyright infringement….Is there a lawyer among the commenters? 🙂

Thanks for reading!

About Miles To Go

Bedtime StoriesIn “Miles To Go” (one of seven stories in Bedtime Stories), Joe is clinging by his fingernails to his marriage and, apparently, his sanity, because he’s having a very hard time understanding why his wife of nearly ten years, the mother of his child, thinks he’s gay. Marty has agreed to go to marriage counseling on one condition: that Joe go out on seven dates with men to see if anything sparks.

Joe thinks it’s an incredible waste of time, an exercise in futility, because he’s straight. Obviously, he’s straight. He’s married, has a kid, and the reason he’s never looked at another woman is because he loves his wife so much. And because he loves her, he agrees to go on the dates.

Since Marty is working evenings, she hires Danny to babysit while Joe is out testing the same-sex waters. Danny makes Joe uncomfortable for a variety of reasons, but he really is great with Ethan, Joe and Marty’s son. Danny tells classic bedtime stories to Ethan, and he tells very different stories to Joe. Danny’s stories make Joe blush, but they also make him think – about Marty, about his marriage, and about his sexuality.

Honorary Blogger K. Vale: The ABCs of Romance: B is for Buddies – Excerpt + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

The ABCs of Romance: B is for Buddies

by K. Vale

Hi, everyone! Kimber Vale here. Today I’m talking about the ABCs of romance. There is an A floating around the ether somewhere in case you’re OCD and can’t possibly read B first. Feel free to do a search because I’m not organized enough to have a link here or anything.

Okay? You done? Good. It’s B time, baby.

B is for buddies. I’m not saying every romantic relationship needs to start off with friendship. Plenty of them are launched with white hot passion and that can sustain a couple for a while. But eventually, lust gives way to either love or lassitude. Love needs mutual affection and comradery, not just animal magnetism, in order to grow. And hey, if you start out being friends in the first place, all the better in my opinion.

In my newest release, Hard Act to Follow, Greg and Kyrie are best friends—heck, they were even brothers in the eyes of the law until Greg and Jasmine, Kyrie’s sister, divorced. They’ve got a buddy base so stable, it’s nearly too solid to hold up a relationship, as it turns out. Eventually, though, they find a way past the complications their friendship places on a potential deeper relationship, and when they do, it’s pretty damn romantic, if I do say so myself.

blogger_bee_trans

An Excerpt from Hard Act to Follow

Kyrie cracked an eyelid and at first didn’t recognize where he was. In a heartbeat, the night washed over him in a mammoth tide of memories and prickly apprehension. He turned to see the other side of Greg’s queen bed. It was vacant; the curtain that separated Greg’s bedroom from his living space left open a foot.

Shit. Shit. Shit. You’ve really fuckin’ done it now, Kyr.

Why couldn’t he have just left it alone? He had told himself and told himself not to force things past the innocuous flirting he always did. It didn’t matter his best friend pushed every big bear button in Kyrie’s body. Didn’t matter he loved Greg more than he could ever say. That he felt safe and protected, and the fantastic permission to always be himself and be completely accepted around Greg.

I fucked it all up.

Greg wasn’t in bed anymore. Did he wake up at some point, look over to see his gay brother-in-law lying naked beside him, and run like hell?

Kyrie had drunk more than his fair share. Some parts of the night were fuzzy, but he knew exactly what had happened. Greg’s bedside drawer was still open. A box of condoms and the lube jeered at him from the tabletop. He opened the drawer wider to put them back. Hide the evidence. How drunk was Greg? Did he even remember?

Kyrie tried to tick off the number of drinks he’d pushed on the guy. You fuckin’ got him blasted because you are fucked up in the head! You got exactly what you wanted, stupid! Maybe Greg wouldn’t remember? Maybe it could be like it never happened. Yeah, right.

A flash of color caught his eye from inside the drawer, and he picked it out. The photo… from my fridge? Kyrie hadn’t noticed it was gone. The picture was folded in half, dividing Kyrie and Jazz.

Jazz.

Greg was still hung up on her.

Lube and a picture of my sister by his bed? Kyrie shook his head, denying the evidence before him. He picked up the box of rubbers, hoping against hope to prove himself wrong.

Expired. Probably a holdover from their marriage, for God’s sake! Kyrie placed the entire jerk-off-kit-slash-shrine-to-his-sister back in the drawer and closed it, a chill enveloping his entire being, trying to suck him down into some frigid hell.

blogger_bee_trans

About Hard Act to Follow

Kyrie is an actor with a physical aversion to telling lies, a one-eyed cat, and horrible taste in men. His ex-brother-in-law and best friend, Greg, harbors a secret crush he can’t shake. After denying his feelings for Kyrie for too long, Greg finally gives in to desire one drunken night. Come the morning, the facts get twisted. Kyrie pretends he doesn’t remember a thing—a lie that eats him alive—and Greg can’t stop thinking about how he screwed up the best thing in his life.

Before they can clear the air, Kyrie follows his dreams to New York City, but could he also be running away?

A mistake from Kyrie’s past detonates their silence, and Greg is forced to confront the man he loves. Is their new truth strong enough to support a relationship, or are they doomed to crumble under old fears? Their friendship could evolve into something a million times stronger, but maybe Kyrie’s act is just too hard for Greg to follow.

Honorary Blogger SJD Peterson: The Crazy, Rambling …Oooh Squirrel…mind of SJD Peterson + Giveaway!

The Crazy, Rambling …Oooh Squirrel…mind of SJD Peterson

by SJD Peterson

First of all I want to thank The Blogger Girls for featuring me on their blog! I’m beyond honored!

When they approached me about writing something, I was like…. Hmmm….Well…. Ugh! I have no idea what to write about and I hate talking about myself.  There I was staring at the screen—nothing—so I went back to the email and it struck me how different the books they are reading and reviewing are. Inspiration hit. YAY! Hence the title of this blog: The Crazy, Rambling …Oooh Squirrel…mind of SJD Peterson.

Most who know me will tell you I get bored very easily and I have a manageable (Hey it is) Adult Attention Span Disorder. I try to stay focused but I often times find it very difficult to do so. It’s probably why I usually have four or five books going at once. I’ll be there typing along and BAM realize I’m staring out the window thinking of another book.

You can definitely see this in my writing. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve read, This is totally different than the last book I read by this author  I don’t know, I think it’s a good thing. It means I’ll never get stuck in a rut or viewed as boring right?

The books being reviewed this week are proof… BAMF, Beyond Duty, Connor’s Courage, Plan B and Pup. We’ve got a Twisty Bad Boy story, Retired Marines coming out, Cowboys, Flamboyant Theater major vs. Jock and a flighty but sweet submissive who can’t focus (sound familiar).  The next few books I have coming out are, you guessed it, different.

My first mystery titled Splintered is coming out in September, which will be followed in November by my first historical Night Stick. December will see sugary sweet Christmas story and how do I follow up sugary sweet? BDSM of course LOL.

So stayed tuned. You never know what will come out of me next and to be quite honest, I couldn’t even begin to guess. What I do know is it will contain men loving men and more than likely doing really naughty things to each other 😉

About BAMF

iWith his fauxhawk, sleeve tattoos, and visible piercings, Ridley Corbin has the whole badass vibe going on in spades. The image serves him well as the self-proclaimed protector of the underdog, and he wants nothing more than to be Alex Firestone’s hero.

Alex, a mild-mannered library assistant, has moved to Slater, a quiet college town, hoping to hide from his past. He keeps to himself, but that doesn’t save him from catching the unwanted attention of the campus bully. But not all is as it seems. Alex’s past comes calling, and it’s time he becomes top dog.
