RJ’s Author Mini-Tour

by RJ Scott

Welcome to my mini author tour, thank you to The Blogger Girls for having me… 😀

When I was at the UK meet I was told by readers on more than one occasion that they thought I just wrote paranormal, or I just wrote contemporary. Of that they knew about Texas, but had never heard of the Sanctuary series. So I came up wit this idea… highlight two very different books, or series, and add in some cool prizes and maybe readers might find something new from me.

The two books I have chosen are The Decisions We Make, and The Case Of The Cupid Curse (Book 1 in End Street, written with Amber Kell).

Amber Kell is my nemesis, sorry, that should have said friend. When we talked about writing together it was inevitable that the books we wrote would have humour laced through them as that is what our friendship is like. With a vampire called Bob, what else would you expect. The paranormal series currently consists of four books, with two more coming to complete the series. Sam is a human. Or at least he thinks he is. When he inherits a detective agency he resolves to only take on human cases, but when his first case involves the Fae he realises he may well be in the wrong part of town. When Bob shows up, all toppy and vampire-hot Sam doesn’t stand a chance. The world in these books is easy to follow, we deliberately kept the stories and characters clear and easy to follow, and made the romances burning!

On the other hand, you couldn’t get further away from paranormal than The Decisions We Make. This book was one of the first books I independently published and was originally penned as a Young Adult book. Then I realised it wasn’t just readers of young adult books that read Decisions and this book has quickly become one of my most popular books. The story of orphan Dnaiel, being thrust into the Walker family, and his journey to becoming the young man he knows he can be, is full of family references and hope. Jamie Walker is his best friend and becomes more when the two young men are leaving for college and realise that being together is worth every decision they need to make. With a supportive family, and a tragic back story, Daniel falls in love. A simple story of young love that overcomes all obstacles.

Honorary Blogger Adrienne Wilder: What Paris Duvoe Taught Me + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

What Paris Duvoe Taught Me

by Adrienne Wilder

Paris Duvoe is the narrator and main character in my newest release, Complementary Colors.

My goal in writing Complementary Colors was to convey a story about an artist who had lost all self-respect and meets a man, Roy Callahan, who changes his life.

As a child Paris witnesses a tragedy that sends him down the rabbit hole of manic depression and borderline personality disorder.  He is left untreated for years and controlled by his sister who exploits his artistic talent in order to fund her lifestyle.

After the story was released and the reviews poured in, I was both touched and amazed at reader’s reactions. What they took away from this simple tale (in my head at least) was something powerful as well as enlightening to even me.

We fear mental illness. We do not want to acknowledge such an ugly and terrible thing. We don’t understand it. We don’t want to understand it. And many of us avoid the topic at all costs.

I had no idea that Paris’s illness would affect so many people the way it did, so much so many refused to read the story because it disturbed them. After reading a few reviews and having readers contact me, I began to sympathize with them. What I saw as a realistic conflict to power the journey of a man on the road to self-discovery, others saw as a dark and dangerous path into hell and the struggle to find a way out.

Because of the incredibly deep and thoughtful reviews, I feel a need to not only thank the readers but take the opportunity to face with them the reality of our fears.

Mental illness affects millions of people. Some illnesses are so profound that a person’s entire life is forever changed. Because we can’t see what’s wrong with a person’s mind, except for their behavior (which many will never understand) their illness is often dismissed as a frame of mind, a lack of discipline, cruelty, selfishness, or just being bad a person.

In reality mental illness is as powerful and destructive as cancer, heart problems, physical disabilities, and/or injuries that permanently scar an individual.  The only problem is, because we can’t see it on the outside, we are more likely to lack empathy for the sufferer.

I am not condemning anyone for this, because it is a natural human reaction. So natural that even as someone who suffers from a mental illness, I often have the same knee jerk response to the terrible things that people can do when left untreated, improperly treated, or afraid to get treatment.

And far too many are afraid. They fear the stigma and discrimination that often comes with admitting there is something wrong, that they are broken inside, and they need help and understanding.

When a person is mentally ill the necessary ability to process stress, comprehend their environment, deal with change, behave with forethought and conscience can be diminished or downright destroyed.

Basically what we see as “normal” by society’s rules is eradicated, and what is left is an individual whose behavior confuses and even terrifies us.

This fear is often perpetuated by the media who often focuses on the mental illness of an individual who commits a violent crime.

So I want to make one thing very clear. The majority of us, while we may suffer even the most terrible affects, never do anything to hurt anyone, break the law, or cause turmoil.  Let me reiterate, we are NEVER violent, we NEVER hurt anyone, we NEVER EVER break the law. We in fact, suffer in silence at the bottom of the rabbit hole, wrapped in darkness and solitude.

Mental illness not only affects a person’s mind but it affects their body. It can impede your immune system, your neurological system, and your metabolism.

I know it’s very difficult for people to empathize with this experience, because again, it is not something you can see with your eyes.  It is an issue that requires a person to break out of their comfort zone and embrace the idea that a person can lose (or never have) their ability to not only control their life, but their very soul. That something intangible, untouchable, and invisible can alter who you are and your life.

I can’t think of many things more terrifying than being condemned to live tied by strings to the chemical imbalance of your mind and consumed by a pain from no particular source.

Mental illness can and often does destroy a person from inside out.  So much so that way too many see death as the only way out. The fact is, people don’t commit suicide because they want to, the do it because they see no other way end to the suffering.

I’ve been at that edge myself, and I can tell you with all honesty, you reach a point where you simply cannot breathe without feeling as if your entire existence is being torn to shreds. It’s a pain I would not wish on my worst enemy and one that is unfathomable unless you have experienced it personally.

In Complementary Colors Paris suffers the extremes of a mental illness and conveys his experience to the reader. When I wrote this story I knew there was no way to make the emotional connection except for the reader to see it through his eyes, feel it through his body, and hear it in his mind.  I honestly never intended for the story to be so dark but rather create hope that there is a way out.

Hope is what I wanted readers to take away (and so many of you did). And knowledge that the pain can be lessened and there are people out there who love you, want to help you, and understand you. You don’t need to face the darkness alone, and you can end the pain without ending everything.

That there is happiness and joy to be found in life.

Paris taught me there are people willing to journey down that unknown path and take the hand of someone in pain, and lead them into the light.

And I want to thank those brave souls for being there when we need you.

About Complementary Colors

1My sister Julia manipulated my life into a prison to keep me silent about our dirty family secret. Her greed made me a slave and circumstance left me with no way to escape.

Trapped, the only way I could silence the nightmares driving me to insanity was to wrap them in color, hold them with shadow, and stitch them to negative space with line.

But no matter how bright the pigments, no one could see my confession.

Except for Roy Callahan.

I thought he was just another nameless one-night stand in a long line of many.
But I was wrong. Roy could see past the façade of my life and through the veil color over the canvas. He could see what the world couldn’t.

And with him I’d find the courage to tell the truth about the boy.

The boy who kissed me.
The boy who loved me.
The boy whose name I couldn’t remember.

About Adrienne Wilder

Georgia born and bred, I am an artist, a writer, and a general pain in the ass.

I spend most of my days working on my next book or designing cover art for other writers. For stress relief I do olympic lifting and occasionally run (but hate it). I have been in love with writing since I was very young but it wasn’t until recently that I decided to pursue it as a profession.

I have experimented in several genres and found that since I identify as male, male romance has been the most comfortable for me to write. I don’t discriminate in my books. All characters are fair game. I do however, prefer a happy ending at some level.

I don’t write the standard romance book. Some might even argue that what I write isn’t romance at all. Personally I think of them as love stories, where even in a fantastical world, there are realistic outcomes to the obstacles the characters face.

Many of my books have dark turns and twists where the characters fight for the light at the end of the tunnel. I write action, fist fights, gun fights, down right dirty evil people who have to be stopped, things catch fire, blow up, and fall in. My characters come in a unique range. They are not all good guys, but the majority of them have very good hearts. Many of them have been through hell in their lives, and many of them have a laundry list of faults. But hopefully they manage to surprise you with their tenacity and loyalty.

If all goes well, there will be a myriad of different kinds of books available this year. If I am really lucky, you will enjoy them.

Honorary Blogger Lisa Henry: Thanks for Reading!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Thanks for Reading!

by Lisa Henry

I’m so excited to be the spotlight author here at The Blogger Girls for July.

For those of you don’t know me or who haven’t read my stuff, I guess there are a few things I’d like to tell you.

First: me! I live in tropical North Queensland, Australia. I still can’t figure out why, since I hate the heat. But it’s winter at the moment, so it’s lovely. Winter translates as “any weather where you have to turn the fan off and wear socks”. I live in an old house. Possums break in at night. I’ve given up trying to stop them.

In my day job, I work as a police dispatcher. Sometimes this is incredibly stressful, and sometimes it’s incredibly boring. Often, those two things happen within the same ten minute period. It also means I work a lot of odd hours, which I actually don’t mind. It gives me lots of time to write.

Firstly, I’ll write anything. Contemporary, historical, sci-fi, fantasy. Cops, cowboys, or guys with regular jobs. Any and all levels of heat. And kink. As long as the story has room for two guys to get it on (and which story doesn’t?) then I’ll write it.

Secondly, I tend to skew dark. This means there will be angst, and a lot of it. My guys have to work for their happy endings. There are no free lunches on my watch. Seriously, if I’m not physiologically torturing a character (or, you know, actually torturing one) I start to get the shakes. As a writer, I am a complete sadist. But as a person, I promise I’m not that scary at all.

The darkest book I’ve written would be Another Man’s Treasure, with my co-author the awesome J.A. Rock. The most light-hearted book I’ve written would be Mark Cooper versus America, also with J.A. Rock. I write a lot with J.A. Sometimes I like to imagine that readers are trying to figure out which one of us is good twin and which one is the evil twin. We are both the evil twin.

I also write with Heidi Belleau. My next book – Bliss – is co-written with Heidi, and is due out from Riptide on 18 August. It’s a bit of a spec-fic dystopia, with added evil mind control. Not for the faint-hearted!

My first book was Tribute, released back in 2011. I think I’ve grown as a writer. I hope I have! It feels like I’m learning something new every day. Since Tribute I’ve written what feels like a lot of books. But also, I’ve had the time of my life. I’ve always loved to write, and discovering there are people out there who actually love to read what I write is the best feeling in the world. So, to everyone out there who has ever picked up one my books, thanks for reading!

About Lisa Henry

Lisa likes to tell stories, mostly with hot guys and happily endings.

She lives in tropical North Queensland, Australia. She doesn’t know why, because she hates the heat, but she suspects she’s too lazy to move. She spends half her time slaving away as a government minion, and the other half plotting her escape.

She attended university at sixteen, not because she was a child prodigy or anything, but because of a mix-up between international school systems early in life. She studied History and English, neither of them very thoroughly.

She shares her house with too many cats, a dog, a green tree frog that swims in the toilet, and as many possums as can break in every night. This is not how she imagined life as a grown-up.

And don’t forget you can follow me on Facebook, or Twitter, or Goodreads, or check out my website. I’d love to hear from you!

GRL Blog Tour: T.A. Chase – A Friendship that Will Last a Lifetime + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

A Friendship that Will Last a Lifetime

by T.A. Chase

When I went to the very first GRL in New Orleans, I was going to meet people I’d become friends with online. Wonderful people who read and wrote the same kind of books that I did, so I wouldn’t feel out of place when I said I read gay romance.

Little did I know that I would meet someone who would become one of my closest friends and a perfect author who seems to be able to tie into my mind. We like to call it our hive mind.

Devon Rhodes has a terrible habit of losing her room key. (She won’t mind me telling you that…lol) We were on the same floor in New Orleans and she asked me to keep one of her extra keys. That way when she lost hers or left it in her room, she could come and find me to let her in.

I was more than happy to do that. We hung out together and discovered our minds seemed to work in the same way. (which should be scary to people…lol) So we were friends by the end of the first GRL.

Devon and I decided to room together at Albuquerque for the second GRL. Again, we discovered how well we fit. By the time she got to the hotel, I’d already put all my clothes away and my side of the room was neat and organized. She did the exact same thing when she arrived before we did anything else.

In Albuquerque, we hatched our International Men of Sports series, which has eight books in it so far and there will be more. Plus we’ve come up with other series we will be writing together as well.

It’s rare to find a person that one seems to have some kind of connection with. While we’re writing and chatting together, we’ll have moments where we’ll type in the exact same thing at the same time. We call that our hive mind. It can be weird, but awesome as well.

My experiences at GRL have always been so much fun and entertaining. I love meeting all the readers and authors who make up the genre, but what I’ll always remember about my first GRL is meeting Devon and making a friend for life.

Honorary Blogger Lori Toland: Reigniting Old Flames

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Reigniting Old Flames

 by Lori Toland

Thanks for having me by to talk about, “Trust In Me” an oldie but a goodie from Loose Id. It’s about Tristan meeting up with his old flame Jamie and falling in love again.

Life changes and the person you are today isn’t necessarily how you were back in high school, often for the better. As adults, we come to terms with who and what we are. But sometimes, there is that one guy or girl that bowled you over from when you were a teenager and young and impressionable and you can’t get that person out of your head.

When you see that person again, all those old feelings come back. The excitement of young love, from a time when life was simpler than today, blossoms in your heart. The memories of loving this person overwhelm you. Suddenly, your teenage hormones explode and you are ready to go. Except you’re older now and more experienced so the sex is going to be that much better.  It’s the perfect recipe for the best night of your life.

Tristan is shocked when he sees Jamie Hunter, the one who got away from him. Caught in the memories of the past of a lover who walked away, can he let go of the pain for a chance at happiness today?

I loved writing the passion Tristan and Jamie shared. It was so much of that first love feeling mixed with high school crush. Tristan was so cute and viewed Jamie’s life through rose colored glasses and found out just how much he didn’t know about what was really going on with Jamie.

I hope you enjoy “Trust In Me” as much as I enjoyed writing Tristan and Jamie. Thank you!

Honorary Blogger Megan Derr: Close to Home + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Close to Home

by Megan Derr

I don’t write contemporary very often. It is usually more fun for me to make things up entirely than stick to an established world where I’m forced to abide by certain rules and limits (although I often ignore them anyway, for better or worse).

When I do write contemporary, without any sort of paranormal or fantasy frill to it, 99% of the time it’s by request or for a specific person. Looking for More was written primarily with Samantha in mind. She is my sister, EIC for Less Than Three, and has been editing my stories for nearly as long as I’ve been writing them. And she wanted a story about a gamer geek.

That particular element did not play as big a role as I had initially wanted, but this was good practice for the hardcore gamer story I do intend to write for her. Amusingly, Samantha was also my consultant for those elements of the story. I am not a gamer anymore, have not been for years, and the gaming world now is not even close to how it was when I left. If I got anything right in LFM, it’s thanks to Samantha, and anything wrong is on me.

I pulled a lot of elements from my own life, and my family, though I didn’t set out to do that. Milo’s job as a foot runner was my job for a few years when I lived in Cincinnati. The way he got smacked in the face with a door came from similar such encounter I had. People fling doors open all the time, and you kind of learn to watch out for that. Knowing the receptionists and other couriers and delivery people—that is very much true. Asshole bosses that make you run all the way across town ten minutes before everything closes is also very true -_- I never got to include all the crazy people you run into on the streets in a job like that.

The broken nose is perhaps the funniest story. That was stolen from my father, who I called to ask about having a nose broken because I have not yet managed to do it myself, but he’d had his broken seven times. That turned into a two hour conversation where I mostly laughed at his pain like the jerk daughter I am (I really really am. I don’t remember how old I was when it happened, but the short version is that my dad’s left middle finger got torn off. When he came home from the hospital, I held up my hand and asked him how many fingers it was. He said five. I said no, he couldn’t do five anymore. In my defense I am a product of my smartass environment). So my father told me all about his broken noses, and I pieced together Milo’s fate from those.

My parents are my consultants for many things, since they have pretty kickass histories themselves that I am happy to borrow/steal :3 Although I’m pretty sure all the questions about murder and death and bodies have put my father and I on the watchlists. Whatever, stories have to get written.

Milo’s love of sour candy came from me. His love of stouts I stole from Sasha. I added some Doctor Who mentions because my sisters have dragged me into the fandom with them (I’m going to cosplay as Rose at Yaoicon this year :D).

I think the point of all this rambling is that while write what you know is often the dumbest advice to give someone, there are times where it can be a lot of fun to write what you know, or shamelessly steal what your family knows.

So it might not be the most involved or complex story I’ve written, but I am fond of it and I hope the peeps that have read it have enjoyed it, too.

Much love to everyone who has stopped by. Hearts and thanks to the Blogger Girls for having me, and I hope everyone is having a lovely week.

~Meg

About Looking for More

22233854Milo has a pretty good life: nice house, decent job, plenty of time to devote to the movies and games he loves. He also has a hot neighbor, Lewis, who frequently comes by to drag Milo out of his house. If Milo wishes they were more than neighbors, well, he’s working on it.

Then Lewis asks Milo for advice on how to catch the notice of a geek—a man that is everything Milo is not, a man who turns his life into a living hell and makes it painfully clear that Lewis will never see him as anything but the nerd across the street.

Honorary Blogger Sharita Lira: Writing Gay Men of Color – Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Writing Gay Men of Color

by Sharita Lira

Unfortunately the media is filled with stereotypes. How people perceive men of any color is a guy lacking emotion, rough, most of the time an alpha with a bad attitude. Then there’s the gay man who is sometimes portrayed as overly girly, weak, and more often than not, a sex addict. In the early 2000’s we were blessed with Queer as Folk, showing beautiful gay men of all types, embracing their sexuality, dealing with the same issues as straight couples trying to survive in the modern era. As brilliant as QAF was, it was missing a key element. In my opinion, a gay man of color who was also a main character would’ve added something to the show.

Some time later, Noah’s Arc came along and I believed it only lasted two seasons. From the couple of episodes I did see, it portrayed gay men of color in a positive light. Seemingly, this series might not have been interesting enough to keep running so it disappeared without a trace.

What about in fiction? These days we have a wealth of colorful gay characters in many books. The question is how do we write them? Do we draw on the stereotypes? Black and or Hispanic men who are angry and always intense; Asian men who seem timid and weak. Those are just a couple of examples. Do we need to add this to our books for them to seem real? In my estimation we don’t. I often wondered why authors, whether it be books, TV, and or movies can’t make a character, especially a gay male character of color, who doesn’t fit that mold. Sure, you can add to the setting to make it more “real”; a young black man from a poorer neighborhood. Perhaps his family hates that he’s gay and his friends don’t accept him. Yes that’s all the reality I need and let me say, not every black man comes from a background like that. But with his attitude? Must he be overly angry at the world and seething all the time? Well hell, he could be a goth boy. That would make BL happy. *grins* Or could he be an intelligent scholar, from a not so poor neighborhood. Perhaps he was the rich one and his white counterpart the middle class working man. My favorite with that kind of background was Bonnie Dee’s Undeniable Magnetism which I enjoyed thoroughly.

What’s my point here? When I write a gay man of color, I try to avoid the stereotypes unless it is a central part of the plot. I feel people should be written as people, without pulling from the so called mold.

Regardless of race or nationality or orientation, we’re all human with unique traits and attitudes that make us stand out from others. Characters should be treated in the same fashion.

An Excerpt from Something About Jayden

Isaac grimaced when Silas finished his statement. “Right…I…” When a man approached with his secretary in tow, he stopped talking.

“Isaac? You what, man?” Silas tilted his head, asking a question.

Isaac gulped hard, glancing at the young gentleman coming into view.

Damn, who is this?

Isaac blinked, “I agree, I totally… um, Silas, you got…” Isaac nodded his head in the man’s direction. He could barely form the words looking at this pretty sight standing behind his boss.

Silas turned around. “Oh, hello, and you…are… my goodness, who are you?” He reached for the man and grasped his hands tightly.

Yeah, who the heck are you, sexy man?

“Mr. Denton, this is Jayden DeMario. He’s one of the interns from Roosevelt University.” The lady with him smiled sweetly and winked at Isaac. “Hey, Mr. and Mrs. Bridges. You both look amazing tonight.”

Isaac had to change his focus and stop staring at the hot young intern. “Well thank you. I’m really loving that dress on you, Tamela. It’s uh…” Isaac didn’t want to be disrespectful to Debra, but he had to do something not to give away his interest in Jayden.

“Oh, thanks.” Tamela gushed and kissed him on the cheek.

When Debra elbowed him, Isaac squeezed her hand and glanced in the direction of the intern who’d moved away from them.

Maybe it was for the best they did. Jayden was a beauty, tall and of Latino decent. His black ponytail reached the small of his back. Even through the suit, Isaac could tell the man took care of himself. He’d love to see more of that up close and personal. Shit.  Dark brown eyes lay behind those black frames, and his face chiseled from stone; perfect nose and narrow cheekbones, and the chin. Damn, the man was so well put together he looked like he just stepped out of a magazine or movie.

Who was this kid, and when could he start so he and Isaac could get to know one another before Silas corrupted him?

“Isaac. You okay?” Debra’s voice broke him out of his trance.

Isaac glanced down at her and pulled her hand up to his lips. “Sorry about that, honey, but I think I just found love. And I… I swear, I don’t think I’ve ever been hit like this.”

“Whoa, babes.” Debra whispered to him, looking around her while she talked. “The kid? I mean, he is pretty hot, but he’s an intern. Didn’t you just tell me about dating men half my age?”

“Yeah, I did but… I mean, look at him.” Isaac peered over at Silas, most likely wooing him with his Twitter account followers and the spiel on being his favorite boy. Isaac had to admit he’d probably be doing the same thing if he had the chance.

“Isaac, you don’t wanna date where you work. That’s dangerous, and besides, again, you told me about Darnell and…”

“And that was for you, my friend, not me.” Isaac cleared his throat, hoping to get Silas’ attention and meet the man in person. “Hey, um, Silas, you need another drink or…”

Silas looked up and laughed, taking Jayden by the hand.

Oh, hell, it might be too late to save him from Silas.

“This, my friends, is Jayden DeMario, our new intern. I think I’m going to put him under your tutelage, Isaac. You’re great at what you do, and the man seems to know a lot about our company.”

Yes!

Isaac smiled, wishing he could do a silent fist pump.

Jayden’s eyes widened when Silas stopped speaking. “So… you mean I got the job? I…”

“Of course, young man. You’re…” Silas moistened his lips and gripped his palm. “You’re too smart and well qualified. I’d love to have you on my team. So… this is Isaac Bridges and his lovely wife. Isaac, Jayden DeMario. Let me inform the ladies at the front that the position’s been filled. They can turn away all other interns for the evening. We found our man!” Silas let go of Jayden’s hand and grasped his shoulder instead, shaking it. “Why don’t the two of you get acquainted?” Silas slapped Jayden’s back and walked away.

Isaac held out his hand for Jayden. Once they connected, a shot of adrenaline went from his hand straight to his cock. Damn, this was only the first meeting, and the man already had an effect on his libido. “Nice to meet you, Jayden. I’m, uh… very excited to work with you. This is my beautiful wife, Debra.”

“Hi, Jayden, lovely to meet you.”

Honorary Blogger Claire Thompson: (Cane + Rope) x Erotic Pain + Passion = Peace? Really?? – Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

(Cane + Rope) x Erotic Pain + Passion = Peace? Really??

by Claire Thompson

What is it about erotic pain that can so profoundly shift the focus of a jittery, wound-up person and send them into a place of profound peace? How could it be that the cut of a cane against tender flesh can somehow segue into pure, perfect pleasure? Can a thorough body flogging really send a person to that height of ecstatic experience sometimes referred to as “flying”?

To those who have never felt the yearning for the feel of rope and leather restraints, or the tingle of skin longing for a hard palm or the kiss of a leather flogger, it’s got to be hard to comprehend this lust for erotic pain. I mean, stubbing your toe is not at all sexy or satisfying, yet the bite of a pair of clamps against tender nipples can send a sexual masochist into spasms of pleasure. Are there different types of pain? And why and how can submitting to erotic pain bring such utter serenity?

There are studies out there citing proof positive that folks who engage in BDSM play are more relaxed and happy than their vanilla counterparts. Could it be the intensity of experience that is the draw? And what of this concept of flying? What is it, exactly? How do you get there?

For me personally, getting there isn’t always easy. In fact, it’s never easy, but that’s part of its power. I have likened the physical and emotional experience of enduring erotic pain to the concept of Purgatory in preparation for Heaven (though I’m not a religious person, I find the allegory useful). According to one definition I find useful, Purgatory is the condition or process of purification or temporary punishment in which the souls of those who die in a state of grace are made ready for Heaven. Each stroke of leather tresses, each biting kiss of the cane, takes me one step closer to that state of grace. It isn’t that the altered state into which one enters puts out the fire out, but rather softens its flame. Instead of enduring the pain, one encompasses it.

I’ve tried to capture it over and over in my writing, but I don’t think, alas, it is truly possible to put it into words. Not that that’s stopped me, of course! I’ll blather endlessly about anything, as I prove in these few examples below from my novels.

From Accidental Slave:

“It hurts, oh, Cole, it hurts. It’s too much. I can’t do it.” Elizabeth danced on her toes, twisting in a frantic, futile effort to escape the stinging lash.

“You can. You are. I can sense you’re almost there. Breathe. Go with it. Stop fighting the pain. Become the pain. Become the whip. You’re strong. You’re brave. You’re almost there.”

Almost where? Where am I going? Ah… Elizabeth let her head fall back. She didn’t have the strength to lift it again. The sting was still there, but somehow more bearable. Her skin, a moment ago on fire, began to cool. Her head still hung back, eyes closed. Her lips parted and she drew a slow, shuddery breath.

Something shifted. He continued to whip her, if anything harder than before. She felt the sting but no longer defined it as pain, no longer processed it as suffering. Her fingers, which she hadn’t realized had been clutching the chains, relaxed. Her hands went limp and she sagged against the thick cuffs at her wrists.

She was aware of Cole behind her, aware the whip was still biting into her flesh but she no longer felt it. She no longer heard the whistling warning of its trajectory. Her mind emptied, her breathing slowed…

Euphoric peace.

Elizabeth opened her eyes, blinking against the bright light. On one level she’d been aware of Cole dropping the whip, Cole releasing her from the cuffs and lowering her to the ground, taking her head into his lap. But she had been too deeply nestled in the cocoon of a trance to respond or speak.

She had no idea how long she’d been lying there. She hadn’t been sleeping—it was more like drifting, or flying. Flying over a vast expanse of clear sky, weightless. She looked now into Cole’s handsome face. He was smiling at her.

“You did it.”

“What did I do?”

“You got there. You got to that place of utter peace, didn’t you? I could feel it happening. It was the most incredible thing to watch.”

“It was like flying,” she offered, trying to find the right words. “Like soaring. I could still feel the whip but I didn’t feel the pain, if that makes sense.”

“Perfect sense. You gave of yourself, Elizabeth. You worked past the pain, you trusted me, you trusted yourself.”

From Texas Surrender:

Avery was paying attention, and clearly made an effort to obey, staying still all the while under the barrage of stinging leather. JD was impressed with his ability and willingness to take the whipping, but he wanted more. He wanted to take Avery beyond mere endurance, to that place where pleasure and pain lost their meaning as separate concepts.

He kept up a steady, methodical cropping over Avery’s ass and thighs, watching Avery’s face and reading his body language all the while. After several minutes, he no longer needed to remind Avery to breathe or relax. Avery was breathing deeply, his hands open and limp on the bale, his eyes closed. The muscles in his face had relaxed, almost as if he were sleeping, and a small half-smile played over his lips.

Avery, this newbie to erotic pain, was entering subspace. He was flying. Though JD had never flown himself, not being one of those Dom who felt it necessary to experience every sensation they provided for their subs, he’d seen it often enough to know it when he saw it. It never failed to thrill and astound him—the knowledge that he was the one responsible for the euphoric trancelike state induced by intense physical play.

Because Avery was so new to the sensation, JD had to be especially vigilant. He would ease Avery into the experience, keeping a careful watch on his reactions. The intense sensations of both pain and pleasure triggered a dumping of endorphins and other chemicals into the bloodstream that acted much like morphine—increasing the pain tolerance of the sub as the scene became more intense. Because of that, Avery might not be aware or even capable of telling JD to stop.

By the same token, if he stopped too soon, he’d jerk Avery from the trance, denying him the complete experience of flying—a sort of subspace interruptus that he’d learned from lovers in the past was the most frustrating of experiences.

“Avery,” he whispered, his mouth close to Avery’s ear. “You okay? You don’t have to speak. Just nod.” He ran his hand lightly over Avery’s ass. The skin was hot to the touch and flushed a dark red from the cropping. If Avery didn’t respond, he would stop. But after a few seconds, Avery slowly nodded his head, his eyes still closed.

“Want me to keep going?”

Again Avery nodded. JD dropped the crop and stroked Avery’s heated flesh with his fingertips. Cupping his palm, he caught the bottom half of one round globe, hitting him hard enough to elicit a faint groan. He hit the other cheek just as hard, leaving a handprint on the darkened skin. Again Avery groaned, his eyebrows furrowing just slightly. Gauging Avery had had enough, JD eased off, finishing with a series of light smacks that he slowly changed to more of a massaging stroke.

He sat down on the bale beside Avery, lifting Avery’s head gently into his lap. The smile still hovered on Avery’s lips, and he gave a long, low sigh of contentment. JD smoothed back the hair from Avery’s soot-smudged cheek and tucked it behind his ear.

Avery opened his eyes and twisted his head to look up at JD. “Wow,” he offered.

JD grinned. “Feeling better?”

“I feel…” Avery paused, seeming to ponder this. He lay his head back down on JD’s knee. “Amazin’. I don’t even know how to describe it. It’s like, better than sex. No, that’s not it. It’s like bein’ drunk, only without the sick woozy feel after. No, no, that’s wrong. It’s like…” He paused, gathering his thoughts. “It’s like this one time when I was a kid and my mom took me down to Galveston. I went swimmin’ in the water, and I got kind of far out. I was tired, so I just lay back and let the water buoy me. I was floatin’ beneath this clear blue sky and it seemed like everythin’ was right with the world.”

And, you might ask, what does the Dom get out of all this? (S)he becomes an intrinsic part of the equation. The love, concern and total connection necessary between the two is essential to create the right environment for a sub to fly. It’s one of the few acts of erotic lover that can’t be mimicked in any masturbatory or auto-erotic fashion. It takes two, which makes it that much more special, and more powerful.

From Heart of Submission:

She sat at the bottom of the bed, perched on the edge, a look of dreamy contentment on her face. “Gosh, Chase. That was amazing. I’ve never experienced anything like it. I guess that’s what they call flying, huh?”

Chase knelt on the rug in front of Kate and put his hands on her bare thighs. “Yeah. It’s really something to watch, to be a part of. There’s no greater high for a Dom than taking his sub there. It’s…” He paused, trying to come up with the right words to capture what was, essentially, indescribable. “…it’s a moment of intense connection. There is no other time, or place, or past or future. Everything is completely concentrated in that moment. It’s like a beam of light as focused as a laser, and as powerful.” He laughed at himself. “I know I’m making absolutely no sense.”

“No, no, you are. I mean, I experienced that too—the connectedness. Like the flogger was an extension of your arm, like you were,” she paused and ducked her head, finishing shyly, “making love to me with it.” She laughed. “Now who’s making no sense?”

“It makes perfect sense,” Chase murmured, stroking her impossibly soft skin. “It’s about trust. I could feel your trust and that freed me to take you further on the journey. You give me the power, you see, when you give me that trust. That’s what I mean about an erotic exchange of power. When it happens, there’s nothing like it. I take that gift very seriously, Kate. And I would never abuse it.”

“Thank you,” Kate whispered.

“Thank you,” he responded, “for your gift.”

And thank you for reading this far! Remember, nothing presented in this article is written in stone. It’s just my own personal take on the experience, and my feeble efforts to give words to the feelings. I’d love your comments on this post, and on your personal experience with the concept of erotic pain.

About Claire Thompson

Claire NLAI’ve been writing for nearly two decades, and have published over 70 novels. I write BDSM romance and non-con abduction tales, spanning both m/f and m/m genres. My love affair is with all things D/s (Dominance/submission). My work began as a romantic exploration of the BDSM life style, and then veered somewhat to the darker side of fantasy. I love delving into the dark psyche of a twisted mind, and gaining insight into what might motivate such a person to do what they do. I don’t create all black and white villains and heroes, but rather strive to develop real, complex and flawed human beings. I don’t want to simply provide an erotic thrill or evocative description. I seek not only to tell a story, but to come to grips with, and ultimately exalt in the true beauty and spirituality of a loving exchange of power. My darker works press the envelope of what is erotic and what can be a sometimes dangerous slide into the world of sadomasochism. Ultimately my work deals with the human condition, and our constant search for love and intensity of experience.

You can find my work for sale on Amazon, Itunes, ARe, Barnes&Noble and Kobo, but I’d be happiest if you bought directly from my publishing site, RomanceUnbound.com.

Honorary Blogger Jordan Castillo Price: Cars as Characters + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Cars as Characters

by Jordan Castillo Price

If you love your car, does your car love you back? Sometimes it seems like it. On a subzero day when you’re begging the engine to turn over and it chugs to life, it feels like your car gave it that little extra try, just for you. Or if it didn’t, then it’s lazy and selfish, as usual.

I had a love/hate relationship with my first car. Being sixteen, I wanted something cool, but what I got was an eight-year-old Chevy Nova with holes in the floor and doors falling off. Since I was a punk rock chick, I was particularly appalled by the color: powder blue. So I did what any other punk chick would do: I spray-painted it black, and I named it Deathmobile. I then placed rubber skeletons on the dash. They melted in the sun and permanently adhered.

While to my knowledge no photographic evidence of Deathmobile exists, I can assure you. It wasn’t pretty.

In fiction, cars not only speak volumes about their owners, they become characters themselves if they’re written with enough attention and intention. In Meatworks, the only thing Desmond Poole cares about anymore is his car. And it’s not even on the road.

From Meatworks –

Mrs. Zelko was off playing pinochle, or whatever she did on Saturdays, but the $25 per month I tithed to her bought me a key to her dusty garage. I turned that key left-handed. And there she was, the primer-gray Gremlin I’d had since I was seventeen years old—the car that, by all accounts, should no longer run. I ran my hand over her peeling hood. If I re-connected the fuel line, I bet she’d chug right back to life.

Gremlin

Gremlin

I got a lot of mileage from that car. I was pretty damn ruthless in writing Desmond, but when he was with his car, my heart softened for him. His did too. He was a bastard 90% of the time, but when he was around the Gray Lady, he was positively tender. Cars represent so many things: personality, status, and especially freedom. For Desmond, the Gremlin was a representation of all that was just out of reach, so close, yet so far. Getting his car on the road goes from being a pipe dream to an attainable goal—a goal at which he could easily fail. It was the one relationship he stood some chance at getting right. And in a way it seemed like the key that could unlock the beginning of an upward spiral. If he could just figure out how to get his car back, maybe he could figure out what the heck he was going to do with his life.

What about you, does your current car have a name? Post it here (or your favorite car name from the past) and we’ll randomly pick a winner to receive a free copy of Meatworks.

 About Meatworks

22472342Desmond Poole is damaged in more ways than one. If he was an underachiever before, he’s entirely useless now that he’s lost his right hand. He spends his time drowning his sorrows in vodka while he deliberately blows off the training that would help him master his new prosthetic. Social Services seems determined to try and stop him from wallowing in his own filth, so he’s forced to attend an amputee support group. He expects nothing more than stale cookies, tepid decaf and a bunch of self-pitying sob stories, so he’s blindsided when a fellow amputee catches his eye.

Corey Steiner is a hot young rudeboy who works his robotic limb like an extension of his own body, and he’s smitten by Desmond’s crusty punk rock charm from the get-go. Unfortunately, Desmond hasn’t quite severed ties with his ex-boyfriend, and Corey isn’t known for his maturity or patience.

Meatworks is set in a bleak near-future where cell phone and personal computer technologies never developed. In their place, robotics flourished. Now robots run everything from cars to coffee pots. Taking the guesswork out of menial tasks was intended to create leisure time, but instead robots have made society dependent and passive.

Desmond loathes robots and goes out of his way to avoid them. But can he survive without the robotic arm strapped to the end of his stump?

GRL Blog Tour: Jackie Nacht – The Minor Details of GRL + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

The Minor Details of GRL

by Jackie Nacht

First, I would like to take this time and thank Blogger Girls for having me as a guest here today. Thank you.

I’ve had the pleasure of reading many GRL posts over the last month and realized it was my time to come up with one. Let me tell you, it’s tough following this awesome group of authors and their tips because they are spot on.

So what do I add to the table? Well, a lot of you know that this will be my third GRL and I’m the shy one. Shush, I can hear you all laughing. Okay, okay, I’m pretty outgoing. So, I thought I would add the minor details for making your GRL experience a little better. Some are funny and not entirely necessary, but some may just save you tootsies. Seriously. *Blows out a breath* Here goes:

  1. Bring an eye mask or cucumbers patches. This can be a beauty tip for keeping puffiness at bay or it can be the major eye recovering you need after keeping your peepers open all night long. These babies have soothed the eyes and saved the headaches from coming on from staying up and chatting the night away. Ten minutes in the morning and you’ll feel like you’ve had a full nights rest instead of just walking into your hotel room to shower and change your clothes. 😉
  2. Band-Aids and comfy shoes. No matter what, you’re going to at one time wear a pair of uncomfortable shoes. Pshaw, I go all weekend wearing four inch heels. I can’t wait!  For some of us, it’s our one time of year to take the lounge pants off, shut off the computer and dress up. For others, it’s getting that knock-out time travel costume with the shoes you’ve never worn before. So make sure to bring Band-Aids to cover those blisters (maybe a little Neosporin) and comfy shoes. Sure the hotel will have them but you’ll pay top dollar.
  3. Safety pins-Yes, this isn’t necessary but they are wonderful to have around just in case. There are a lot of cool swag tags that are fun to put on your badges adhesively. Sometimes they don’t make it the weekend, so a safety pin is nice to have to keep your pink “Princess” slogan on. Also, safety pins can be a life saver for the costumes. Straps break or something rips; you have your travel back-up plan.
  4. Pick your poison. What I mean by this is more than likely you’ll be sore after the first day of standing and walking around. If you get sore, you may want to bring a pain reliever with you. Definitely not necessary for all but it’s something to keep in the back of your mind.
  5. Don’t disappear in the Bermuda Triangle (AKA your room). GRL is a long weekend. It is necessary at times to go up to your room, take a break and recharge those batteries. I love to go up and just close my eyes and rest to gear up for the rest of the night. However, don’t get lost and stay in your room all night. Your friends will want to see you and you’ll be greatly missed.
  6. Keep your eyes open. I say this to all of you and as I write this, as a reminder to myself. A lot of people are new and coming from all around the world by themselves. If you see someone in the corner, more than likely, it’s a lot easier for you to walk into the corner than for them to come out. Go and say hi, you may have just introduced yourself to your lifelong friend
  7. Have fun! GRL is an experience like no other.

About Jackie Nacht

JackieNachtbanner2013

Short, sexy and sweet— where a little love goes a long way.

That’s the best way to describe Jackie Nacht’s stories. She was introduced to M/M Romance through her sister, Stephani, and read it for years. Then, she thought it was time to put her own stories on paper. Jackie began writing short and sweet stories that ended with a happily ever after.

Thinking back to her own book addiction, where there were many nights Jackie stayed up way too late so she could read just one more chapter— yeah, right— Jackie decided to write short romances for young adults as well as adults. Hopefully, they will give high school and college students, or working men and women something they can read during their lunch hour, in between classes or just when they want to briefly get away from the daily stresses of everyday life.

You can find Jackie at her Website, Blog, Facebook or Twitter.
