But when he realizes his witness is suffering from amnesia and can’t even remember his own name, Nick wishes he’d gone with his gut and put in for vacation time.

Then Nick’s boyfriend and former Recon teammate, Kelly Abbott, joins him in Boston, and Nick finds his hands a little too full as the case and his personal life collide. The witness he’s dubbed “JD” is being tailed by Julian Cross, a retired CIA hitman. To complicate matters further, JD forms an attachment to Nick that Nick struggles not to respond to as they search for the key to JD’s identity.

Trying to determine whether JD is friend or foe as they investigate the crime puts them on the trail of a much older mystery. Blurb: Lieutenant Connor Morgan of SFPD’s SWAT division wasn’t looking for love. Especially not in a man. His life plan didn’t include one Forest Ackerman, a brown-eyed, blond drummer who’s as sexy as he is trouble. His family depends on him to be like his father, a solid pillar of strength who’ll one day lead the Morgan clan.

No, Connor has everything worked out—a career in law enforcement, a nice house, and a family. Instead, he finds a murdered man while on a drug raid and loses his heart comforting the man’s adopted son. It wasn’t like he’d never thought about men — it’s just loving one doesn’t fit into his plans.

Forest Ackerman certainly doesn’t need to be lusting after a straight cop, even if Connor Morgan is everywhere he looks, especially after Frank’s death. He’s just talked himself out of lusting for the brawny cop when his coffee shop becomes a war zone and Connor Morgan steps in to save him.

Whoever killed his father seems intent on Forest joining him in the afterlife. As the killer moves closer to achieving his goal, Forest tangles with Connor Morgan and is left wondering what he’ll lose first—his life or his heart.

GRL Blog Tour: Jamie Lynn Miller – Why Do We Hurt the Ones We Love? Excerpt & Giveaway

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Why Do We Hurt the Ones We Love?

by Jamie Lynn Miller

Many thanks to everyone at The Blogger Girls for having me here today – the second stop of my GRL 2014 blog tour! Keep reading to find out how you can win a FREE copy of my latest novel AND an Amazon gift card.

I’m Jamie Lynn Miller and I’d like to talk about my novella Memory’s Prisoner. My tagline says it all: “Men in uniform…and out”. Give me a cop, a fireman or a paramedic and I’ll write a story about them.

Why do we hurt the ones we love?

I’ve been asking myself that question since I was old enough to read my first Hardy Boys book. Joe was my favorite character and all of my favorite stories had him hurt or kidnapped or in some sort of danger. Eventually that carried over to TV shows, too, when I was a kid. Like “Emergency” – Roy was my favorite and if he was in peril, I loved it. Then there was “Starsky and Hutch”. If Hutch was suffering I was loving it. Whenever my “hero” was hurt or in jeopardy and his friend/partner was there to put him back together again I was in my happy place.

This continued on into my teens and young adulthood and I truly thought there was something wrong with me! Why did I like it when my favorite characters were in pain? I felt like I was in need of a 12 step program or something!

Then in my early twenties I discovered fanfic. More importantly, I discovered HURT/COMFORT fanfic. It was like the heavens opened up and a great light shined down upon me. I wasn’t strange for wanting my favorite characters to get shot or poisoned! There was a whole ton of people just like me! I can’t tell you what a relief it was 🙂 And that was the catalyst for me to actually start writing my own stories.

Now I embrace my love of hurt/comfort. It’s a running theme in my eBooks and Memory’s Prisoner is no exception. This time the hurt is both physical and emotional with Mitch and Joey needing to lean on each other to get through their injuries that have changed their lives, providing the comfort they both desperately need.

So here it is, Memory’s Prisoner, the story of Mitch and Joey and how they overcame the odds to find their way back to one another. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

An Excerpt from Memory’s Prisoner

Mitch crouched at the corner of one crate, preparing to slip to the next closest one. The flash from a rifle’s muzzle inside the warehouse caught Mitch’s eye as it illuminated the gunman.

Doyle.

Their eyes locked and an evil, maniacal grin crossed the psychopath’s face. Mitch’s cover had been blown. A split second later he heard the ominous click of the triggering mechanism inside the crate he was leaning against and Mitch knew he had seconds to live.

Launching himself up and away from the crate, heedless of the gunfire surrounding him, Mitch desperately tried to put as much distance between himself and the bomb as he could. Four frantic strides were all he could manage.

The force of the explosion threw him off his feet and hurled him forward, wave after wave of intense heat and debris at his back, before he slammed down onto the dock. Excruciating pain like he’d never known raced through his battered body as he rolled across the wooden surface before coming to rest on his back. Dazed and winded, fighting unconsciousness, Mitch heard Tim frantically calling his name. His head lolled to the side as he tried to answer but his gaze caught sight of the torn, bloody mass of flesh that was his left leg.

“NO! MITCH!”

Joey’s cry of utter terror drew Mitch’s attention from his mangled body. He looked up to see his partner racing toward him, surrounded by Team Three, weapons blazing. Uncaring of the extreme danger he was in, Joey charged forward in a desperate rescue attempt, his fear for Mitch written all over his face.

Horrified, Mitch tried to call out, managing only a hoarse whisper. “No… get back….”

Two feet from Mitch it happened.

Another crate exploded, sending huge pieces of debris through the air. Unable to slow down or change course, Joey plowed directly through the explosion, his head suddenly snapping violently to the side as a large piece of wood impacted it.

“JOEY!”

The scream was torn from Mitch’s throat as he watched his partner’s expression change from one of terrified concern to one of total confusion as the wood hit its mark and his body crumpled like a rag doll.

The nightmare had begun.

Honorary Blogger Tempeste O’Riley: Chase, Cooking, and a Non-goopy Salad for Mark + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Chase, Cooking, and a Non-goopy Salad for Mark

by Tempeste O’Riley

Good morning everyone! Today I thought I’d share a little about some of the food you’ll find within the pages of Desires’ Guardian. You see, Chase has a hobby that most people outside his immediate circle of friends doesn’t know about, but is put to good use by one of his bosses during the story. Chase loves to cook! Now, if you’ve read Designs of Desire then you knew this already, lol, but did you know that Chase loved to make more than snarky comments and desert? Yep, who knew 😉

When Chase is asked to help with a dinner for his boss Mark, he goes all out. But, what does our favorite sweetie plan for the menu? Steak and potatoes? A simple casserole? Oh, no! Not Chase. When he does a dinner, he does it up right. So let’s take a peek at the menu before I share a little snippet from Desires’ Guardian.

  • A winter fruit salad with lemon poppy seed dressing,
  • Stuffed pork tenderloin,
  • Honey roasted baby carrots,
  • Parmesan-garlic mashed cauliflower,
  • Crusty bread,
  • Red and white wine (because some prefer red and some white with pork), and
  • Apple raisin crisp with vanilla bean ice cream

And no, that fruit salad isn’t the goopy kind with marshmallow stuff in it (Mark hates goopy, lol). Here’s the recipe (from allrecipes.com) for 6 servings that Chase used as his base—though we all know he would have added his own special touches…

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon diced onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon-style prepared mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons poppy seeds
  • 1/2 head romaine lettuce, torn into bite-size pieces
  • 1/4 cup baby spinach or mixed wild greens
  • 2 ounces shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 – 1 cup slivered almonds, cashews, walnuts, and/or pistachios,
  • 2 tablespoons dried cranberries
  • 1/2 – 1 apple – peeled, cored and diced
  • 1/2 – 1 pear – peeled, cored and sliced

Directions:

  1. In a blender or food processor, combine sugar, lemon juice, onion, mustard and salt. Process until well blended. With machine still running add oil in a slow steady stream until mixture is thick and smooth. Add poppy seeds and process just a few seconds more to mix.
  2. In a large serving bowl combine the romaine lettuce, shredded Swiss cheese, cashews, dried cranberries, cubed apple and cubed pear. Toss to mix then pour dressing over salad just before serving and toss to coat.

Excerpt of Desires’ Guardian

“How’d you learn to do all this, anyway?”

“My mom loves to cook, and James was raised in a B&B. He learned to cook a lot of things and taught me after we met in college. It’s no big, honest.” Chase stopped to think through everything planned for the evening, not wanting to mess up Mark’s big meet-the-parents thing. “Oh, Aurora said for you to set up the bar but not to worry about appetizers. So, from here forward, it should be super easy. I will stay in here, out of the way, and just serve. Once I deliver the main dish, I’ll head out. All you’ll need to do is serve dessert and then clean up. And, Mark?”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t let Aurora clear the dishes if you want to impress her folks.” Chase smiled, fussing with his cuff. “Show them you can take care of her, not that you expect to be taken care of.”

Mark nodded as he again looked at the dishes and cookware in use. “I don’t know how I’ll repay you for this, but I swear I will, Chase!”

Chase waved away his words, unconcerned about “paybacks.” They were friends: what else would he expect?

“Okay, so, what all are we having? I don’t want to look like an idiot when her mom asks me about the food,” Mark asked, scuffing the toe of one boot back and forth.

That’s Who I Am by Jayden Brooks: Excerpt & Giveaway!

Hello! I want to thank The Blogger Girls for letting me hang out and share my recent release, That’s Who I Am.

An Excerpt from That’s Who I Am

by  Jayden Brooks

For the first time, my nose caught a whiff of the delicious aroma of roasting meats and something sweet. My stomach chose that moment to give a plaintive growl. I clutched my belly in surprise and embarrassment. “It smells great. Is her cooking edible?”

Sophie’s smack to the back of my head had me ducking and rubbing the abused spot. “Hey, that wasn’t a gentle tap, brat.” She hit me again. Hard. I leveled a glare at the sassy miss.

Hands on hips, she cocked her hip and wagged a finger in my face. “Watch your mouth about my cooking or you’ll be relying on Donovan.”

Donovan’s deep laughter filled the room. “She’s standing between us and starvation, unless you know how to cook.” His dimples flashed around the whiskers. I wanted to touch them. Lick them.

Clearing my throat, I shrugged. “My mom made sure I could cook the basics.” And there I was, right back to feeling like shit. But how the hell did I avoid ever having a stray thought about my family?

“Well, our Sophie is an aspiring chef, and the basics aren’t part of her repertoire. We shall eat like kings. Unless we piss her off. Then it’s gruel.”

I was horrified. I pissed everyone off. “We’re gonna starve.”

They both burst out laughing. They didn’t realize I’d been on my best behavior so far, censoring my mouth ruthlessly. Lord help us all.
