Former Primrose Pack member Jason Black happily accepted his role as beta in the new Regent’s Hill pack, knowing that merging the two was the best decision for everyone involved. Daryl Easton is loyal and honest but wary of change. The joining of the two packs wasn’t his preferred outcome, and he’s struggling to see all the newcomers as pack, including those now working alongside him.

When the alpha council proposes a two-week pack-building course to help improve troubled relationships, Jason and Daryl are sent along as backup. With the full moon adding to the rising tension, emotions are volatile, and tempers flare among the unit members. Jason and Daryl become closer than either of them expected, but with such opposing views on relationships, a messy outcome seems inevitable unless Daryl can let go of the past.

Michael jerked his head up at the sound of a soft knock on his open door. Jag was leaning against the doorframe, hair damp and falling around his face. He was wearing a pair of skinny jeans, but his chest and feet were bare. Michael’s heart began thundering again; he was sure it was fighting to burst out of his chest.

Jag folded his arms casually. “Next time, you should join me.”

Michael’s eyes widened involuntarily. He cleared his throat, scratched his jaw, and tried to figure out what to say. He needed something that would give him plausible deniability. Before any words could leap out of his throat, Jag started to walk slowly towards him, circumventing the large desk that stood between them. He leant down, resting his hands on the arms of Michael’s chair so their faces were only millimetres apart.

“Getting rid of all that body paint is a bitch.” The right-hand side of Jag’s mouth hooked up into a smile. “I guess you know how far it goes now.”

Michael found himself swallowing. They were too close, and Jag’s lips were too tempting. But that was the point, wasn’t it? This wasn’t some innocent conversation. A week and a half of stares and pseudo flirting had led to this moment. Had Jag intended for him to see him in the shower? Probably. The young man was definitely trouble. Gorgeous, hard to resist, trouble.

My gaze locked on the lone figure in the corner booth. Michael had his laptop open and his cell to his ear, speaking to someone. He stayed. I had no idea why he was here, and I tried to pretend it wasn’t because of me.

Because if it was…what the hell did it mean? Was he hoping to hook up again?

I certainly wouldn’t be opposed to it.

With a dry towel slung over my shoulder, I began wiping up tables for the new customers in line.

When I neared his booth, I noticed he was no longer on the phone. Instead, his eyes were fixed on the newspaper he’d folded in thirds in order to work on the daily crossword puzzle. A smile tugged at my lips. “You need me to do the heavy lifting again?”

His eyebrows rose to his hairline as he tore his gaze away from the newspaper. An instant later, awareness dawned, and he barked out a laugh that lit up his entire face.

“Not today, smartass.”

I stepped closer and noticed that indeed, he didn’t have any empty spaces left on the puzzle. “Decided you needed a different setting?”

“Something like that,” he replied, glancing briefly at his computer before pressing the top down. “Been working so many hours at the office that the same four walls were getting to me.”

“I hear you,” I said, glancing around the coffee shop, the familiar brick walls and wooden beams not always so welcoming or soothing as the week dragged on.

“That why you’re busing tables?” He motioned to the rag in my hand. “Does it help to keep moving?”

“Yeah, it does,” I replied, my pulse throbbing that he’d actually noticed. “But I like to keep the place clean too.”

My jaw ticked as I remembered the story Elijah had shared with me about West finding a job as a busboy after he left Michael. Michael certainly hadn’t been too kind about the news.

“I suppose you think it’s beneath a manager to bus tables?” I asked with an eye roll.

“No way,” he said, shaking his head, his shoulders sagging. “Not anymore.”
