Blurb:  Théoden: Dante is within my grasp. I’m actually very excited to meet my future son. He’s got wolf’s blood flowing within his veins, so I know he’ll be the stubborn sort, but I do like a challenge. As for Deacon, the wolf Alpha has surprised me. I hadn’t expected him to locate Dante so quickly. He’s a cunning one I’m going to have to keep my eye on. His ambition is both admirable and dangerous. As for my King’s decree, things are moving along smoothly. I have two more children to sire and then I would have fulfilled my duty. The sooner I’m done with that, the quicker I can get to training my new child. I’m so looking forward to breaking him in.

Noel: As for my obligation to the King, I met his expectations. I’ve sired my first son and it’s been one hell of an experience. I thought I would feel overwhelmed, but Romeo is taking to this life so naturally. I guess you could say that I chose wisely. I’m also getting the hang of being in control and being his Father. No doubt, Marco’s training is seeing me through a lot of transition. Now, I have to hold up my part in the bargain Théoden made with Deacon. Can’t say I’m happy about being used as a bargaining chip, but it’s out of my hands. As for my training with Marco, he’s promised to put me through the ringer physically. I’m ready to learn more and grow stronger.

Warning: This serial contains strong adult content not meant for sensitive eyes. The novelettes in this serial will be filled with dark, twisted, raunchy and steamy scenes between powerful, sexy men that will either offend you or get ya revved up. This series will not be pulling any punches, and it won’t apologize for hurting your feelings, either. You’ll find no fluff and ruffles here. The vampires are not misunderstood, hopeless romantics looking for love. The werewolves are not cute and cuddly and the dragons aren’t the ones from your childhood. This is NOT a romance. There are approximately 34,600 words in this novelette.

Not Quite Going It Alone

by Annabelle Jacobs

My new paranormal romance, The Altered, is the first book I’ve self-published. It was a daunting prospect before I started the process, not knowing fully what was involved. But I had a long gap between submissions for Dreamspinner and I wanted to get something out before my next DSP release.

Fortunately I have the best author friends and they were a huge help in pointing me in the right direction and helping me sort everything I needed to do. I’m going to mention some of them here, because without them I never would have got this book out.

Jay Northcote is my writing buddy. She keeps me on track and pushes me to get those words down, and provides endless encouragement along the way. My pre-readers, Con Riley and N.R Walker, gave me invaluable advice about where I needed to expand sections, and what to tighten up. And Posy Roberts did a fabulous job of proofreading, along with Jay–who’d probably had enough of my story by then, but did it anyway.

A good editor is essential. Sue Adams was mine, and she was awesome.

Finally, Natasha Snow was my cover artist and she did a fabulous job interpreting my very vague outlines.

Overall I feel very lucky to have had such experienced help in polishing my story, and even though it’s called ‘self-publishing’, I certainly didn’t do it on my own.

About The Altered

24862656Twenty years ago the UK’s water supply was contaminated with an experimental pathogen, Lycanaeris, causing widespread panic across the nation. Terrorism was suspected but never proven, and when nothing happened–no epidemic, no unexplained illnesses–the whole episode was written off as an elaborate hoax. But Lycanaeris was selective. Only those of a certain age, and with a specific gene in their DNA were infected. Time would reveal the pathogen’s true nature, when those susceptible grew up Altered.

Daniel is one of thousands forced to hide his altered status by living a quiet life. He’s not like the others, though. Daniel can’t help looking so distinctive or being able to see every altered for what they really are. To those abducting altereds, that skill makes him valuable.

For Jordan, shifting from human to wolf means living under the radar to avoid unwanted attention. Meeting Daniel complicates matters. Daniel’s existence is a threat to Jordan and his friends, but Jordan can’t seem to shake the strange connection between them. When danger threatens, there’s little time for Daniel and Jordan to work out their feelings before lives are at stake.

An Excerpt from The Altered

He laughed at the joke Matt was in the middle of telling, chipping in for a bit and teasing him, and then he felt it again, creeping up the back of his spine like icy fingers. Daniel stayed perfectly still, suppressing his body’s natural reaction, and carefully turned to place his empty pint glass on the bar.

He let his gaze wander along to the end of the bar, past the couple he’d spotted earlier, and—

Bloody Hell.

He sucked in a sharp breath before he could stop himself. Usually he got a flash of images, depending on how much they’d been altered—claws, teeth, and fur if they changed fully, but never anything like this. One minute Daniel was looking at a tall dark-haired, really hot man, and in the blink of an eye he’d changed into a huge black wolf, fangs bared in a snarl—clearer than anything he’d seen before.

The image vanished almost as soon as it appeared, and the noise from the bar suddenly jarred Daniel back to his senses.

Fuck.

Honorary Blogger Bey Deckard: Setting the Stage + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Setting the Stage

by Bey Deckard

One of the best things about writing alternate-world stories is coming up with setting. I’ve travelled quite a bit and have a background in history, two things that really helped me to create what (I hope) come across as plausible and interesting settings in the Baal’s Heart books. I’m going to take this opportunity and talk about a few of them today.

The Ship

ship

The majority of the pirates’ time happens aboard Baal’s Heart, the pirate ship that Baltsaros captains. I call it a corvette (yes, that’s where the car got its name!), which is a small, manoeuvrable warship that’s similar in size and function to a sloop-of-war. When I first set out to write Caged, I had planned on basing the pirate ship on the HMS Beagle, the Cherokee-class 10-gun brig-sloop that took Darwin on his expedition (to go along with Jon’s theme of evolution) but in the end I settled on something smaller because I wanted a reduced crew. That being said, the Heart is a corvette that’s not very corvette-y… Only a few of them in real history had the raised quarterdeck that holds the captain’s quarters, and most of them were slightly longer and had more guns—the Heart is a measly 78 feet in length and has only 8 guns on deck. However, the few alterations I made to the ship do mimic the ones that were done to the aforementioned Beagle… I still wanted a nod to history there. Just little details to make me happy, really.

Madierus

madierus

Oh Madierus… beautiful jewel-like island in the middle of a warm, turquoise sea. The island is partially based on Barbados, an island in the Caribbean that I consider my home away from home. However, unlike Barbados, Madierus is a volcanic island… I literally just wanted an excuse to write the waterfall scene, and a crater/old lava tubes seemed like the most fun way to write it. Now, though I don’t do a lot of description of the island itself beyond the basics, I can say that it’s also based on the islands up north at the mouth of the St. Lawrence… high and rocky on each end and grassy/forested in the middle. Only instead of pine trees, we have palms. Much nicer, in my opinion.

The palace on Madierus is mostly set in blues and gold to contrast with Baltsaros’s habit of wearing blacks and reds to show that it is really Abetha’s domain and not his. The covered walkway that leads to his tower, however, is of northern design (Baltsaros’s homelands) and plays a role in the events of Fated.

Baltsaros’s birthplace

hometown

I’m not going to name it here… it’s part of the story in Fated. However, I will say that it’s partially based on where I grew up in Northern Québec (pine trees, cold, and blackflies!), on Ragnar Lothbrok’s harbour in Kattegat (hello Vikings!), and… well… Ancient Greece (you’ll have to read Fated to understand why that last one is!).

All over the books exist references to parts of our world’s history, all mashed together to make the world and timeline of Baal’s Heart unique from our own. You have medieval English dishes presented alongside Northern African ones, Moroccan covered markets paired with Mayan temples, antique concepts like the firmament contrasted with the advent of electricity… a world where Ancient Egyptian ways of treating chest wounds are still used and 19th century hypodermic needles have already been invented.

Yup… setting is really fun to write, and with these books, had a great time of it!
