After the Hiatus

by Chris T. Kat

Thanks so much to the Blogger Girls for having me on your blog. Dreamspinner Press published my new release, Alpha Unit One, New York, today. Alpha Unit One, New York is a shape-shifter story with a unique twist.

Alpha Unit One, New York is the first book I’ve written after a hiatus of over a year. Two years ago my last book came out, and I retired from writing. Well, that’s what I thought, anyway. I’d lost the fun I’d always found in writing, and health issues didn’t help either. So writing became a chore when before it had always been sort of my relaxation zone. I believed I’d burned out, but as much as it pained me in the beginning, I soon realized I’d find another hobby.

So I went back to doing sports, and eventually my health troubles lessened, and all of a sudden there was this desire to write again. At first I shoved it aside because I was actually afraid if I started writing again I’d overdo, and my body would not tolerate me working myself into the ground again.

But what to do when you have a complete story in your mind with one of the cutest characters you’ve ever invented? Right, I started writing again. At first, I was very careful about how much time I spent at the computer. But I soon realized I could write without overtaxing myself (although I only write sometimes and very little) and the joy in writing came back. I hope that shines through in Alpha Unit One, New York because I totally adore the baby animals in this story. And yep, the twist in this story is having baby creatures as the permanent form of human shifters.

In this story, I could indulge in writing my characters with their playful behavior. I could also describe their features in detail, like the baby fur, large eyes, etc. All in all, I smiled a lot while writing this book, and hope it’ll elicit a smile or two from you, the readers.

Blurb: The cat’s out of the bag….

In a world that accepts shifters as normal and thinks nothing of human/shifter couples, baby shifters and small shifters are treated as subpar. They are not allowed into the more dangerous professions, and their mates have legal control over what they can and cannot do.

Nicholas Reed is about to challenge the established rules. At twenty-eight, Nick has just been accepted into New York’s Alpha Unit One—an elite law enforcement team, composed equally of humans and shifters, that specializes in drug crimes. Enter a huge complication in the form of Sam Black, an older lion shifter who is the leader of the unit… and Nick’s mate. Nick wants Sam, and he wants to keep his job, but he can’t have them both. He also can’t choose between them. Continue reading

Curl Around My Heart by Londra Laine: Exclusive Excerpt!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Curl Around My Heart

by Londra Laine

“So,” Tate said. Reece looked up briefly as Tate parted LJ’s hair before rubbing some oil onto her exposed scalp. “What animals are you excited to see at the zoo tomorrow?”

Reece pushed a cam lock into one of the dresser parts then looked up again to see Tate dip a bristled brush into a shallow bowl of water that Tate had brought in from the kitchen and set on the coffee table before starting LJ’s hair. Tate brushed LJ’s strands into submission with the damp brush.

The little girl hummed. “The flamingos. I want to know how they stand on one leg all day. I would get tired if I did that.”

Reece smiled and looked up from his building again, catching Tate’s nimble fingers stop mid-braid and he cocked his head to the side. “You know, that’s a good question.” He continued braiding, forehead still creased in thought. Reece grabbed another cam lock and pushed it into a piece of wood. “I heard that flamingos don’t even fly,” Tate said.

“Nope,” LJ answered. “My dad looked that up. They can fly but mostly at nighttime. Right, Dad? Isn’t that what Alexa said?” Reece lifted his head as LJ looked over at him making Tate lose the grip he had on a section of hair.

Tate gently directed her head forward and down so he could continue his braiding, and Reece dropped his own head, focusing on the dresser again. “Keep your head still, ladybug. Now, who is Alexa?”

Reece grinned at Tate’s tight tone but kept his gaze on the two pieces of faux wood that he was slotting together.

“It’s a lady, on the cell phone, or a little round thing you can put in your house. And she talks to you,” explained LJ.

Reece looked up to find Tate frowning in confusion, the brush beside him on the couch, his motion stilled. “You know. Alexa. The app? You ask her questions and she answers.”

“My Nana Darlene has one,” LJ added.

Tate cackled, picking up the brush again and dipping it in the water again. “Well, the next time you talk to her, ask which birds don’t fly. Maybe it’s the turkey?”

“No,” said Reece, struggling with a particularly stubborn screw. “It’s the ostrich you’re thinking of.”

“Yes,” Tate exclaimed. Reece looked up from his project to find a beaming Tate with the hairbrush thrust up in the air in victory and LJ giggling. “That’s the dang bird I was thinking of.”

Reece met Tate’s grin with one of his own. It was probably the first time he’d seen the man really smile. Tate’s smile lit him from the inside, making him glow. Reece loved it. His skin pebbled from the sight.

“What’s an ostrich, Mr. Tate? It’s a bird too?” LJ asked.

Tate guided LJ’s head back down as he parted her hair into another section. “Yeah, it’s a kind of bird. They don’t fly but they run fast. And they’ve got big bodies with long legs and great eyelashes.”

At Reece’s chuckle, Tate looked over at him, his fingers gliding rhythmically around the three strands of hair he was pulling into a braid.

“What?”

Reece grinned, picking up the instruction manual to see what part he needed to put together next. “Big bodies, long legs, and great eyelashes. You just made the ostrich sound like someone you’d want to message on Grindr.”

Tate laughed, parting another section of LJ’s hair and greasing her scalp. “Well, the ostrich is an attractive bird. And hell, that description does kind of fit the profile of my last date now that I think about it. He wasn’t much of a runner… He was little roided out to be honest.”

“You like boys too, Mr. Tate?” LJ asked.

The hammer Reece had lifted to tap a stubborn cam lock flew out of his hand and thumped to the carpet as he looked up at his daughter in embarrassment, his cheeks warming. Reece met Tate’s gaze, the man’s face full of uncertainty and maybe even fear. Reece hated that Tate would even consider that Reece might be hostile toward him because of his sexuality.

Sure, Tate had been a little glammed up the day that they’d met, and Reece had assumed the man was gay. But Tate hadn’t volunteered that information, and Reece hadn’t asked, but having Tate’s sexuality addressed out in the open clearly made Tate ill at ease.

Reece cleared his throat. “LJ” he began, but his daughter plowed forward. “My dad likes boys and girls.”
Reece watched Tate roll his lips together before the man began braiding again.

“Is that right, LJ?”
The little girl started to nod but stopped herself. “Yep. Maybe you can date him?

He’s got long legs and lashes. My Nana Darlene says she’d kill for his eyelashes, but I don’t think she should do that, though.”

Reece’s face heated fast from embarrassment. He didn’t feel any better when he caught Tate grinning at him, his body shaking with suppressed laughter. Then his insides lurched. Was Tate amused because the idea of going on a date with Reece laughable?

“That’s enough, Lettie Jean,” he admonished gruffly. The little girl looked over at him, eyes wide, and even Tate’s motions stopped. “It is not okay to ask people about their dating life. It is rude. That’s personal. Do you understand?”

LJ’s shoulders slumped. “Yes, Dad,” she mumbled before looking up at Tate. “Sorry, Mr. Tate.”

Tate met her gaze and tweaked her nose with his thumb and index finger, making her grin. “It’s okay, ladybug.” He put his fingertips to her temples and turned her head. “Head forward so we can finish.” Tate looked forward, spine stiff, hands moving on autopilot, before his gaze skittered over toward Reece again.

Tate looked like he wanted to say something else, but Reece was afraid of what that might be after the way the man had laughed at the prospect of dating him. Reece looked back down at the structure he was working on, avoiding Tate’s nervous glances.

“For the record, LJ,” Tate said in a low voice, his eyes completely focused on LJ’s hair, “I do like boys. And I’d go out with your dad.”

LJ giggled. “I told him to ask you, Mr. Tate.”

Reece had once again abandoned the work in front of him, his lips parted slightly in surprise.

Tate looked over at Reece, his gaze running over Reece’s body like a caress. Despite once again wanting to sink into the floor—his daughter’s direct nature was truly a gift and a curse—Reece couldn’t look away.

The corner of Tate’s mouth quirked up. “You did? Well, hopefully he takes your advice.”

Serving Him – The Retreat by L.M. Somerton: Exclusive Excerpt!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Serving Him – The Retreat

by L.M. Somerton

Rowan Stanton held the cream envelope in a trembling hand. The paper was thick and expensive, his name and address handwritten on the front in dark blue ink. The cause of his nerves was the logo on the flap. Though no one else would know it from the logo, Rowan had seen it many times. The letter was from The Underground, an upmarket BDSM club in London. “Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God!” He pelted up the stairs to his attic flat—though flat was a bit of an exaggeration for the space beneath the thatch he rented from his aunt. He shut the door, dropped the latch then took a deep breath. His hopes and dreams depended on the content of the envelope and he could hardly bear to open it in case it contained nothing but disappointment. Gripping the precious letter, he scrambled onto his bed, pausing for a moment to admire the perfectly plumped pillows in their smooth cotton cases. He stretched out, taking care not to rumple the pale blue satin eiderdown, and pulled his threadbare teddy to lie next to him. “Well, Bilbo, this is it.” Bilbo wasn’t much of a conversationalist but he was an excellent listener. “Make or break time.” Rowan slipped his finger beneath the envelope’s flap, ripping it open. It contained a single sheet of folded paper and a train ticket.

“You are cordially invited to attend an interview for the post of houseboy at The Retreat. Please find a rail ticket enclosed. All other travel expenses will be refunded on production of receipts.” Rowan’s heart pounded as he read the words aloud. He hugged Bilbo hard before jumping off the bed and dancing him around the room. The short note gave address details, directions to the club from Westminster Underground station, a date and time. “Four days! I only have four days to wait, Bilbo!” He caught sight of his now rumpled bed cover and had to stop to smooth it. He laid Bilbo on the pillow then took a few deep breaths. It was time to get ready for work or he’d be late. He had no idea how he was going to make it through the day but it had to be done. If he didn’t get the job at The Retreat, he needed to keep his boss onside. Dealing with the uber-rich clientele at Fordingby Manor Hotel might try his patience on occasion, but he loved being able to help people and the money wasn’t bad.

Excitement bubbled like champagne in Rowan’s veins. He took off his striped pajamas, folded them into a neat pile on his pillow then headed for the bathroom. One of the luxuries he most enjoyed in his flat was the power shower his aunt had had installed for him. The force of the spray made his skin tingle. As he washed, he sang at the top of his voice—he wasn’t the most tuneful singer, but he made up for the lack of harmony with enthusiasm. His rendition of Doing the Loco-Motion wasn’t going to win any prizes but it made him happy. He bopped around the cubicle, as much as the constricted space would allow, until his hip made bruising contact with the tiles and vibration created a cascade of shampoo and gel bottles from the shelf.

“Ow!” A half-full container landed on his toe. At least they’re not glass. Rowan finished rinsing before backing out of the shower. He groped for a towel with one hand whilst rubbing water from his eyes with the other. He had a tendency to be accident prone but nothing was going to burst his bubble that morning. Dancing with a bit more caution got him through the drying process without further mishap. A dollop of product helped tame his hair, though it still managed to exert dominance over his efforts with a few random waves, including one rebellious lock that existed only to fall into his eyes. He discarded the towel in order to take a critical look at his reflection in the full-length mirror on the back of the bathroom door. Tilting his head to the side, he gave himself a once-over.

“Not too bad.” He patted his flat stomach, wishing his abs were visible. He twisted, trying to get a view of his arse. The role specification for the post at The Retreat had been very clear. Full or partial nudity would be required. They hadn’t asked for a nude photo with the application, just a head shot, so Rowan hoped they wouldn’t be disappointed by his physique—or lack of it. He didn’t want to miss out on his dream job because he had no money for a gym membership. Working at the hotel kept him trim because he spent most of the day running up and down stairs, fetching and carrying, but it didn’t help build muscle mass. There was nothing he could do about that. Hopefully The Retreat was seeking a short, skinny houseboy with uncontrollable hair.

Exclusive Excerpt from Open Season

Nineteenth Hole

Javine puzzled over why she turned away just as their eyes met. But when she approached Alan, her reasons seemed logical. She was pristine, poised in her golf skirt and collared shirt. He went to the bar, leaned onto his elbows, ordered a Macallan single-malt—neat, and waited. He’d be patient, they’d come his way soon. And they did.

Javine forced himself to not blink against the irritating contacts that bothered his vision. The light surrounding Elle was still there, but muted. It annoyed him to have the acuity blurred, but the obfuscation was necessary. From the time he’d watched her over the years, Javine knew the colors of her glow—the marker that predicted Flare.

“Andre Jordan, I’d like you to meet the new V.P. of Corporate Communication, Elle Jones,” Alan introduced, making the predictable motions from one to the other.

Javine stood straight, scotch in one hand. Though his contacts and glasses obscured her glow, he’d seen the highlights before. Lavender streaks weren’t a foolproof indicator, but he’d come prepared just in case. He offered her a gloved hand. If her Flare turned out to be touch activated, he didn’t want to inadvertently give things away.

“Coming from the range, Mr. Jordan?” Elle asked.

He raised his brows with a single nod to affirm, then said, “Elle, I understand that you come to Travelers from Jewel Systems?”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Jordan.”

“—Andre,” he cut in. “Software to financial services is quite the leap. What made you switch?”
