Author Q&A: L.A. Ashton + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Interview Banner

Please welcome L.A. Ashton to The Blogger Girls!

If you could trade places with one of your characters, who would it be and why?

Aranck from my novel “Echoes”, a thousand year old Native American vampire. He’s seen and done so much, and he still has a good heart.

If you could sequester yourself for a week somewhere and just focus on your writing, where would you go and what would the environment be like?

Trees and hills and wildlife. A cabin tucked away behind green next to a river. Nature always makes my imagination sing.

What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

Quiet.

What internet site do you surf to the most?

Ugh. Twitter.

If you had your own talk show, who would your first three author guests be and why?

Laurell K. Hamilton, because she shaped my mind and interests from a young age, and is in a queer poly relationship. She’s a very interesting woman, and I’ve grown to love her more and more as I’ve aged.

Drew Karpyshyn, a master of character work and action who needs to sit down and be praised by me for at least an hour straight.

Ted Chiang, because his brain works in such a vastly different way than mine, and I want to know more.

When you got your very first manuscript acceptance letter, what was your initial reaction and who was the first person you told?

Shock. I didn’t believe it until I made others read it. It still doesn’t feel real, somehow. The first one I told was my partner, and then I sent the screenshot to all my close friends and just trembled in an excited ball on the floor.

Blurb: When unassuming college student Emery Sutton wakes up in the morgue, it takes him a few minutes to remember he has magic (superpowers, damn it!) and free himself from the refrigerated drawer. And the body bag. (God.) It doesn’t take long, though, for him to remember the hot guy with wings he ran into just before a city bus ran into him.

Junior Reaper John must explain to his supervisor how his first solo assignment went so wrong. All he knows is that he happened upon Emery quite by accident, that Emery saw John when he shouldn’t have been able to, and when they accidentally touched, a bus came out of nowhere and plowed Emery under. (John really does feel bad about that.)

Hot angels, annoying demons, hijinks, absurdity, drunk siblings, a dash of silly romance, an inordinate attachment to wings, and a highly disorganized bid for world domination—Don’t Fear the (Not Really Grim) Reaper follows Emery and John down the rabbit hole where they find that moms are scarier than demons from hell, a goat is not a puppy no matter what Emery’s sister says, and awkward romance can happen anywhere. Whiteout Conditions by Dara Nelson: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Whiteout Conditions

by Dara Nelson, Writing as Kendel Duncan

Vaughn stood with Caysun next to the huge black Harley and he stared, and stared.  Yeah, he could see why he refused to leave it….or let anyone else drive it.  That had him frowning because all he could picture was how damn sexy Cay would look riding it.

Cay?  Now he was using nicknames? Well, thinking them anyways.

He huffed as he shook his head.  “Lend me your cuffs, would ya, Preston?”

“Why?”

“You’re going to cuff my hands around loverboy here, that way if he tries anything to get me off the bike, he’s going with me.”

Without looking over, Caysun smirked and said, “Honey, I’m not getting you off my bike but I definitely may want to get you off on my bike.”

Vaughn rolled his eyes as Brent snorted and JD laughed but truth be told, he liked the stuff that was falling from Caysun’s mouth.  It challenged him.

It made him want to shut it – with his hand…..or better yet, his dick.

Said dick twitched behind his zipper.  He couldn’t climb onto the back of Caysun’s bike with a hard-on.  He’d never hear the end of it.

“Just give me your goddamn hands, Rourke,” he said with a slight growl as he spun Caysun around.

As he unlocked the cuffs, Caysun leaned closer, too close, and put his lips to Vaughn’s ear, “I can smell your hard-on, Deputy,” he whispered.

Vaughn glared at him, “What are you, a fucking vampire?”

Caysun grinned, “If you want me to be, I’ll be a vampire.  For you, I can be anything you want, Deputy Kepler.”

A shiver rushed down Vaughn’s spine.

Motherfucking hell.  This man not only pushed all of Vaughn’s buttons, he pushed buttons that Vaughn didn’t even know he had.

“Just get on the damn bike, Cay.”

Caysun hummed, “Mmmm, nicknames.  I like it,” he said as he slowly slid his keys from the front pocket of his jeans and then threw his leg over the bike.

Vaughn swore he could smell the sweet scent of the leather chaps and vest that he was certain that Caysun wore on long rides.

Okay….now he was smelling phantom shit.  What the fuck was happening here?

He shook his head to clear it then climbed onto the bike behind Caysun.  He tried to keep his dick from making contact with Caysun’s ass but with the way the seats were designed to slide the passenger forward, that feat was impossible.  He had to bite back the groan that wanted to come out when his dick settled into the warmth of Caysun as if they were made to be together, as if they were born for each other.

They fit together perfectly, a fact that Vaughn tried, unsuccessfully, to push to the back of his mind

Okay, now even his thoughts were getting sappy.  He was clearly losing his fucking mind.  Probably because it’d been so long since he dicked someone out….or got dicked out.

He snorted at his own thoughts.

“Something funny, Deputy?” Caysun said from in front of him.

Vaughn frowned, “No, nothing,” he mumbled.

“Well then, wrap your arms around me…..tight.”

Vaughn sighed as he put his arms around Caysun’s waist, trying to leave space between his body and Cay’s.  But then Caysun grabbed his wrists and pulled until Vaughn’s chest thumped again against Caysun’s back.

“Tight, Deputy Kepler.  Wouldn’t want you to risk falling.”

Again, Vaughn squeezed his eyes shut as JD clicked his cuffs in place while Caysun’s words slithered over him.

If he was truly honest with himself, he might be able to admit that he was already falling………

Honorary Blogger Miranda Turner: Genesis of My Story + Excerpt!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Genesis of My Story

by Miranda Turner

Thank you for allowing me to stop by today and share a little something about how my book came to be. My debut novel is in the urban fantasy genre, and as I enjoy sweeping story arcs, it is the first in a planned five book series following the same two main characters. There is a romantic subplot, but romance is not the main focus. Gabriel and Evander have a lot to work through before they’re ready for a HEA.

One day about five years ago, I was sitting around when a few sentences popped into my head that I felt compelled to write down. That one line later became the jumping off point for what is now a series following the same two main characters and their team of immortal warriors who will have their own spinoff series. But back then, I only had a line.

Gabriel woke to an angel beside his bed. Unfortunately, it wasn’t his dream man. It never was.”

Fast forward three years and I was going through some huge life changes when Gabriel popped into my head with his smart mouth and swagger. The line above originally had no names and even different pronouns. I’d never done anything with it. A story for it had never come to me like it had with some of my other small pieces of writing. But, as I do when a character or other idea pops into my head, I opened my work in progress folder and my ideas document. That line was at the top, and Gabriel grabbed on to it and told me it was his.

I immediately began writing and hit about the 15K mark before those huge life changes started affecting me too deeply to continue. I put it aside with all my other partially finished stories and concentrated on better establishing my editing business to be able to support myself and my children. A few months later, I moved myself and my children across the country to be closer to my family and live in the area I grew up in.

The first year we were here was mostly spent adjusting to our new normal, but the kids settled in quickly, and we were soon happily living our lives. This new, calmer existence allowed Gabriel to come back to the forefront of my mind, and he was shouting…loudly. Reading back through what I’d already written, I realized that, through all my editing work, I’d improved my own writing too. So I started over, only keeping the original starting line and finessing it a little.

From a single line and a single character, an entire world sprang into existence in my head. A world filled with angels, demons, immortal warriors, secret missions, gods and goddesses, and more. This world also has limits, and most people aren’t what they seem. There is prejudice, unfounded hatred, and all the human fallibilities packaged in the bodies of immortal and/or supernatural beings. While they have power, they don’t have perfection, and in my very biased opinion, that’s what makes them so interesting. I couldn’t stop writing their story, and for the first time in my life, I reached those all-important words. The End.
