Honorary Blogger Jae T. Jaggart: True Confessions Of A History Geek – Excerpt + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

True Confessions Of A History Geek

by Jae T. Jaggart

Confession time. I’m a history geek, but I love reading m/m historical romance as much as non-fiction histories. If I could time travel my first stop-off point would be the Victorian era. I just love it. It’s at that perfect point where the history is fascinating, the clothes incredible (hello Pinterest!), but in certain ways they had a level of modernity we’d recognize and regard as essential. For the fortunate, there was something close to modern plumbing. Heaven 🙂 Not to mention, towards the later Victorian era, the telephone was appearing. Even better!

So when I decided to write Objects Of His Obsession, which is set in England in 1898-1899, with detours to Paris and Cairo, I wanted to write a book that while the history wasn’t swamping every page, was there as a real backbone.

As a reader as much as writer, what I look for is a devouring experience. The one where it doesn’t matter if it’s two in the morning, you just have to keep turning those pages.

Writing Objects Of His Obsession, I wanted to convey a sense of the relentless heat and intensity tying together two wildly different men. Evander, a duke, with all the dynastic and social responsibilities that title entails, still needed Ben’s emotional stability and honesty. And Benedict’s twin obsessions were both long standing – Evander, who fascinates him on so many levels, and Egyptology.

The two are opposites, for whom it had been love, lust – or lightning – at first sight at university, years before.

Writing about those guys, I really did love them and others in their world. Evander, the epitome of cool, of sexual sophistication and Benedict … hell, he’d fit in now as a sweet, obliviously sexy genius nerd.

I’ve had readers ask if I’m going to write another m/m historical romance, and damn, yeah! I also know where I’d take a second story in the Obsessions world, which would be great fun.

I’ve included a short, turning-point excerpt here from Objects Of His Obsession:

“You’re so… You tear me apart, Evander,” he managed thickly. “Every moment since Harkenstorn I haven’t been able to get this out of my mind. Before then it was … not real. My foolishness. But once we’d had that night together … you took me apart and remade me.”

Evander was very still. And then he turned his head to look at Benedict.

“You think that night left me unmarked?” he asked softly.

“I don’t know.”

At the raw vulnerability in Benedict’s face that lush, carnal mouth curled.

“You marked me, Ben. Believe me. Your mark was already there. You branded it deeper.”

About Objects Of His Obsession

HIS_FINAL_TOTAL_HellfireVampires_inc1-3London, 1898

Lord Benedict Yeats has two obsessions.

One of which has a definite pulse – the seductive and beautiful Evander St John, Duke of Casterwell. A man he has a certain history with.

A man who tells Benedict that he has spent too long amongst sand and dead things. He might not be wrong. Casterwell’s world is one of sexual sophistication and games that Benedict cannot hope to match.

But when Benedict returns from working on a famous dig in Cairo, Casterwell invites him to a country house party that will change his life. An Egyptologist of growing renown, Benedict will also catalogue the famous Casterwell collection of antiquities.

And almost certainly, will become one of Casterwell’s string of lovers. But will he be the one to break through that glittering façade? Or will the scars of Casterwell’s dark, bloody past and his complex and fiercely deceptive private life tear them apart?

Warning: Contains two men wildly obsessed, a lust too long denied, hot m/m sex between a naive Egyptologist and one very determined duke, and absolutely no cursed tombs. Approx. 56,000 words.

Blurb: Senior associate attorney Derrick Swain wants it all: a loving husband, a fulfilling career, and a couple of kids. After years of hard work he’s on the fast track to a promotion. He’s also met the man of his dreams. A week of daily lunch meetings in Central Park provides the perfect setting to get to know him better, and Derrick thinks it won’t be long before they take the next step and go on a date. But instead of asking him out, the object of his affection stops showing up without explanation, leaving him to wonder what went wrong.

As part owner of one of the most prestigious law firms in New York City, Roman Bradford knows that professional success isn’t the be all end all. Although he’s been lucky in life, true love has eluded him for the most part. One too many failed relationships have caused him to be leery of trying again, until he meets a man that can only be described as temptation personified. A few conversations is all it takes for Roman to start believing things will be different this time around. It doesn’t matter that they are boss and employee, or that he’s feeling too much, too fast. Not when he can see the same emotions in Derrick’s eyes. Then life turns on a dime, and Roman has no option but to let his chance at happiness go.

A battle of wills ensues when a life-altering case brings them together a year later. Roman wants to do the right thing by not letting anything happen between them, and Derrick is determined to prove they’re meant to be together. A Blogger Girl Q&A with Inez Kelley + Giveaway!

HC: I just recently read The Bastard by Inez Kelley and loved everything about it.  Its the first book in her new series The Baddest Boys in History, and you know what that means?  Now I have to wait forever for the next book!  So in the mean time, I’ve harassed Inez just enough to where she agreed to answer a few questions…

Interview Banner

HC: First, can you tell us a little about your new book The Bastard, the first book in your new series The Baddest Boys in History?

IK: This was a story I wasn’t sure anyone would like. One part history, some not-so-nice-guys and a few weird angels. Toss in some sex, a few religious tones and stir with a big old romance stick. But I took a chance and it does seem to have hit a vibe with many people. The book has been likened to the Old Skool BDB by JR Ward, Kenyon’s ‘DARK HUNTERS’, Showalter’s ‘LORDS OF The UNDERWORLD’ and Neil Gaiman’s ‘AMERICAN GODS’.

While I have read Ward’s BDB, I’ve only read two books by Kenyon, and have never read Showalter or Gaiman. I just wrote what I wanted to read.

HC: It becomes obvious pretty early on in The Bastard that many, if not most of the characters are inspired by real, remarkable people from the past.  Are you a history junkie or what?  Where did this idea come from and how much research have you already put in to creating this series?  And do you worry about the liberties that you take about what we all believe to be fact about these people and their history?

IK: I am a history junkie! I hated high school history class which was just memorization of dates and battles spewed in a monotone structure, but college and personal study let me dig deeper and explore other aspects of history, the real stories and facts, not just the dates.

The story idea came from a two people, friends from two different parts of my life. One was a writer friend who suggested that a certain bad boy in history (that is not included in my series – but I reserve the right to write about him later) was beyond redemption. At the same time, a friend from a parenting board asked me on a ‘books we’re reading’ thread why all bad boys series had to be vampires (it did seem that way years ago). Those two statements merged in my brain and I started researching possible characters for a vague idea. Three years later, here we are.

As for how much research, about three years worth before the book went live and it is still ongoing. I wanted to make sure the plot lines and story arc in my head were logical and feasible. I have a file on my hard drive that is about 400,000 words long of just information, on every aspect of the series. Less than a quarter of it will make it into the story as recognizable history but I’ll know it and it helped shape the characters. Some of it appears but it small tidbits, like the décor of Erik’s apartment.

The liberties I took never bothered me. I tried to stay very true to what ‘history’ tells us about these people but history can be very vague and very contradictory. I exploited that. I was able to take more liberties with Zale, Myth and Nomad but even then, there was an accepted pool of mythology and customs. So I adhered to as much of that as I could. It was a little like getting a coloring book with basic simple drawings and it was my job to make that plain round apple look life-like.

HC: You probably have already recognized this, but here at TBG we read and review predominately LGBTQ stories.  So I have to point out that Rex is an out and proud bisexual male.  Have you explored pairing him with a man for his HEA?  And if not, can we expect to see other LGBTQ characters later on in the series?

IK: I love Rex. He is sexual, period. There is a scene in upcoming The ADDICT that shows him in a sexual act with a man but ultimately his destiny is with a woman. Even then, she is unique. Her name is Tia and, in her first life, she dressed and behaved as a man. Being a woman is what got her killed and she isn’t too keen on turning into a girly Mary Sunshine now.

Her character is as far from Lacy’s as imaginable. Rex asks her if she is a lesbian. She replies she has never been to Lesbos. In her time, lesbians came from Lesbos and there was no sexual connotation of that word. The words aitis or trepesthai would have made more sense to her. She is just not interested in sex with either gender… at first.

One thing I found during my research that was interesting is that homosexuality/bisexuality was vastly more accepted in ancient times than more modern eras. Also, different cultures viewed it differently but few considered it outright wrong. Not to say that it was completely accepted as the norm, but it doesn’t seem to have carried the same stigma as it does/did in more modern history.

Just like nudity, it was just something there. You might not parade it but you weren’t ashamed of it. There were social obligations to meet, but if one could fulfill those, then the fact that their preference was for the same gender was pointless.

We meet openly gay and bi Righteous later in the series as well.

Although Rex is openly bi, he is not the only main character who has engaged in homosexual acts. More of that will be revealed as the series progresses. I do want to mention that history colors things. For example, once imprisoned, Joan of Arc was promised her freedom if she ceased dressing/behaving as a male. She tried but couldn’t conform and reverted to her male attire, knowing full well it would send her to her death. Could she have been transgender? To me it is possible. And in my mind, she is not the only historical figure who that label might apply to.

HC: I know this series is all about “the baddest boys in history”, but will that include any of the Righteous? Because those boys are pretty bad themselves!

IK: Yes, we meet several. Some are jerks, some are not. And not all are ‘boys’. There were female Forsaken at one time and we see some female Righteous in the series.

HC: In The Bastard, the story is set in West Virginia, but the Forsaken Leap around the world to faraway places like Israel and Nicaragua in their fight against the Third.  What kind of exotic locales can we expect to see in the future?

IK: Oh, many. One underlying concept of this series is that all mankind is threatened by Samael, not just the USA. So of course, the story must venture outside the US district. Two places I have tentatively placed scenes in are Cambodia and Madrid.

HC: Can you share with us some of your future plans with the series (with as little spoiler detail as possible)? How many books do you already have planned out and will that complete the series?

IK: 1) Omen is not a shifter and will never be human, but he is more than you see.

2) One Forsaken goes stark-raving mad, as in break out the straight jacket, foaming at the mouth, shove his ass in a padded room.

3) Samael becomes a Daddy… and that ain’t a good thing.

4) There will be six books in the series. I don’t see myself going further than six. Too many series go on too long. I know each main couple and the full over-arcing plotline. The individual romance stories are sketchy after book 3 but that is okay at this point. They will come to me.

HC: I expect that you already have it planned out, but I just want to say that I want Zale’s book NOW!  He has to be the baddest of the bad in my opinion and I can’t wait to see all that ice melt.

IK: Zale is like an onion. Too strong, too harsh and too bitter but as you slowly peel away the layers, the sweeter, milder inside is revealed. But then again, he is an asshole and there is lots more of that to see.

HC: And my final question is just for fun: What does your workplace where you write look like? Are there any weird or interesting things you surround yourself with? Any quirks you have that gets the inspiration flowing?

IK: I just moved 700 miles and sold most of my old office furniture. I plan to redo a new office as soon as I can. For now, I write on a desktop sitting on an old scarred and nicked computer table. I have about seven little plastic geckos I call my Muses that keep me company. I normally write in silence and prefer to write at night. I am mostly nocturnal, a hold over for working midnight shift for over a decade as a 911 Dispatcher. I write in the dark, with one lamp burning. Too much sunlight kills my thought train for some reason.

Honorary Blogger Taylor V. Donovan: It’s A Serial Problem + Giveaway!

It’s A Serial Problem

by Taylor V. Donovan

Hey, all!

As you may or may not know, I’ve been on tour all over the gay romance blogiverse promoting my upcoming release. Hearsay  is Book 1 in a trilogy featuring Derrick Swain and Roman Bradford, and pretty much the beginning of their journey towards happiness.

Yes, I’m writing another series, even though I’ve only released two titles in my other series, By Degrees

The thing is, I have a weakness for well developed characters. I want to know who they really are, what makes them happy and what makes them tick. I want to develop a relationship with them as individuals before they become someone’s better half. Long-lasting relationships, in my opinion, take a lot of work, bending, and compromising. In order for me to believe a couple will live happily ever after, I have to see them hit rock bottom first. I have to see them face stuff together, and I have to believe they’re truly willing to fight for the person they love.

People in love need time to become a real couple. They have to show their bad side, their quirks, their annoying habits, and the other person needs time to decide if that’s something they can deal with. This is the reason Bylaws was born. Derrick and Roman have serious issues to deal with, and doing so will take time. In Hearsay we’ll see one of our guys doing everything he can to get the man he wants, while our other protagonist resists the pull with everything he has. Why? Because some people think love isn’t enough… because they believe that, when you really love someone, you need to let them go. And why does our guy think that? You’ll have to read Hearsay to find out. 🙂

And speaking of finding things out…

If you’ve read Six Degrees of Lust there’s a very good chance you called me some unrepeatable names for leaving a certain scene out. I’m a few years late, but I’m about to make it up to you. 🙂  Coming soon—next week—look for Slingin’ Ink… but only if you’re already read Six Degrees of Lust. Otherwise you’ll get spoiled.

And, speaking of getting spoiled… How about you all spoil me by sharing your thoughts on insta-love versus slow build-up? I brought a copy of Hearsay with me to give away, plus a paperback, plus this cute little bag with the Bylaws logo, because, yes, I like branding my stuff, too. So go ahead. Leave a comment for a chance to win.

Good luck, everyone, and many thanks to The Blogger Girls for hosting me today.

Ta for now!

A Hunted Man by Jaime Reese: Promo, Exclusive Excerpt + Giveaway!

A Hunted Man Blog Tour Banner

An Exclusive Excerpt from A Hunted Man

by Jaime Reese

He walked into his favorite diner and breathed a sigh of relief as he got a whiff of freshly baked cookies.

“Afternoon, Hunter. Turkey today?”

He nodded. “Thanks, Bill.”

Something was different. Incredibly different than yesterday it seemed. He looked around casually and observed the changes.

“Don’t take this the wrong way, but this is probably the cleanest I’ve ever seen this place. You got rid of the boxes and…wait a minute, is that an espresso machine back there?” Hunter said with a wicked grin.

Bill scowled. “Don’t you start with me on that, too. We’ve got a coffee guy, you can hound him about it,” he said then focused on finishing the sandwich.

“Coffee guy?” he asked with piqued interest.

“Yeah, he started today. He’s out back with Lucy rearranging her workspace.” Bill walked over to the register with the sandwich on a tray and filled a cup with coffee with the usual mix. “I know you hate this stuff.”

Hunter feigned offense. “I don’t hate your stuff.”

Bill laughed. “I don’t know how you do it in court because you’re a horrible liar. I know you hate my coffee. It’s the only explanation for someone having that much cream and sugar with a tiny splash of coffee in it.”

Hunter squirmed. “I do love your sandwiches,” he said as he bent to view the display of baked goods, hoping to hide his embarrassment in the process.

“Good save. Maybe our coffee guy can figure out how to make a coffee you like that is actually coffee and not some sugar lava. Hey, Cam,” Bill yelled.

“Yeah, Bill.”

Hunter closed his eyes as the smooth voice unexpectedly weakened him. He felt as if he’d just been punched in the gut…repeatedly, then kicked in the balls a few times for good measure. Those two simple words in that firm yet silky tone attacked every muscle in his body.

He opened his eyes and tried to calm his racing pulse. Thank God for the clear glass that allowed him to peer through and watch the casual gait of the man as he approached, then turned to face the older, obviously shorter man. Hunter was hypnotized, tracing the perfect curve of the ass in profile, showcased for him through the dessert display case. How appropriate. Hunter took a deep breath and slowly straightened from his bent position to meet the new hire.

He froze.

Hunter raked his gaze up the man’s body, wishing the guy had worn a tighter shirt that would leave less to the imagination. He was young, a hair under six feet and lean with just the right amount of muscle. Hunter’s vivid imagination ran wild as he scanned every inch of this man and his pale skin. He glanced upward to see the dark, sandy brown hair hang lazily over the man’s eyes. Hunter’s gaze halted once it was met with the brightest blue eyes he had ever seen staring back at him.
