Exclusive Excerpt from Room For Recovery

by DJ Jamison

Beau stared at the notification he’d just received about Wade Ritter: You are now connected on Messenger.

Wade must have added him on Facebook. Beau fully believed that would never happen. Even with their moms encouraging them to connect back when Wade didn’t know anyone in town, he’d ignored Beau’s friend request.

So, what did it mean that he accepted it now?

Wade remained distant at school. Beau had been embarrassed when he’d walked right by without even acknowledging him the week before. Ker had been so pissed she told Beau he should ask out Miles. He’d been chatting with Miles more in class, and he’d joined Beau and his friends for lunch a couple of times. Beau wasn’t confident he was reading him right, but Ker was all for Beau testing the waters.

She knew, just as well as Beau did, that his crush on Wade was unhealthy. He wasn’t sure asking out Miles would make it disappear. It had taken root, even when he didn’t know Wade, and now that they were talking to each other, it grew stronger every day.

When he first met Wade three years ago, he wasn’t immediately a jerk. He was withdrawn. If they were in a room full of people, Wade would be in the farthest corner from everyone else. He didn’t smile or laugh. He wore headphones and stared out the window mostly.

Beau’s little fifteen-year-old heart had been smitten immediately. It had yearned to break through the melancholy that hung over Wade. Maggie, too, had been taken with him. Wade was a cute kid, with shiny blond hair and blue eyes. Neither one of them stood a chance.

But while Beau hung back, watching and waiting after Wade had brushed off his first few attempts at friendship, Maggie charged ahead. She pestered Wade in that way little sisters seem to master at a young age. She asked him questions, and when he shrugged, she asked him more. She ignored his indifference, offering to show him the television, to play a board game, to take him out to the tire swing.

Finally, one day, Wade wasn’t quiet anymore.

“Leave me alone!” he’d exclaimed after she’d followed him onto the back porch, and Beau had watched from a distance. “I’m never going to like you; do you get that? You’re just a stupid little girl who doesn’t know crap about the world. So, let me make it simple for you: I don’t know you. I don’t want to know you. So, go play with your dolls or whatever it is you do.”

Maggie had burst into tears and never spoken to him again. Unlike Beau, she was not a glutton for punishment.

Even as Beau walked into that room and stood up to Wade for the first time, he’d been unable to let go of a small sliver of hope that they’d one day be friends.

“You don’t have to be mean,” he’d said.

“Obviously I do. You guys won’t leave me alone. I don’t want to be friends, you know? Not with her and not with you. Not with anybody.”

Beau squashed the disappointment, not wanting Wade to see how the rejection hurt. He’d shrugged. “Your loss.”

All these years later, staring at the friendship Wade had extended via social media, he wasn’t sure that statement had been true. He’d felt the loss keenly, though it was for something he never had. He felt the loss of what might have been. The friendship he could have formed with that beautiful but sad boy.

He clicked Wade’s name on messenger and tapped out a message.

I knew you liked me.

He watched with bated breath, regretting the tease once he’d hit send. What if Wade took it too seriously? What if he thought Beau meant like as in … like? Ugh. So stupid. He should just put his phone away and forget about it.

The phone chimed.

It only took me three years. You must be charming.

Exclusive Excerpt from Hard to Let Go

by Jaclyn Quinn

“Do you always put chocolate chips in your blueberry muffins?”

He looked down at the bowl then up at Leslie. He’d been fucking up all morning and it pissed him off to know it was because of that asshole. “Shit. Guess today’s special has been decided, chocolate chip blueberry muffins.”

“Sounds yummy if you ask me, but then, I pretty much like chocolate in everything.” Leslie laughed and tossed some chocolate chips in her mouth.

Owen shook his head and said, “Yeah, I know you do. If you eat one more chocolate croissant, I’m docking your pay.” He bumped her with his hip to move her out of the way as he reached for the muffin pan.

“Like hell you will. It’s called quality control. How else are you gonna know if this stuff is good enough to sell? You’re welcome,” she deadpanned, shrugging her shoulders. “Besides, if you being distracted gets us more chocolate in your baked goods, I don’t see a problem.” Leslie winked at him and tucked a red curl that had fallen out of her hair tie back with the rest of them on top of her head. They each had pale skin, but with Owen’s dark chocolate brown hair and her red curls, they didn’t even look related.

“Who says I’m distracted?” he asked defensively. He was totally fucking distracted. Man, he really needed to get his mind off of the shit-storm that barreled into town this morning. Luckily, all of the mistakes he’d made were ones he could salvage…so far.

Owen’s mind had been going back to the close call that morning over and over again. He knew he was being immature blaming Brody for anything that happened. Owen’s the one who almost caused the accident by running the stop sign. He was just so damned pissed at himself, because before he recognized Brody, he’d let his eyes wander over his well-developed body. The perfect fit of his jeans, the plaid shirt that clung to a broad chest, the goatee that made him look rugged and mysterious, and the brown hair just long enough to tuck behind his ears. That was not even close to the clean cut, all-star athlete that used to make Owen’s life a living hell.

Without his high school jacket or him hiding behind the ring leader, Chuck, no one would know it was Brody Walker. Except it was him. He was one of Chuck’s lackeys, always there, taunting Owen and egging Chuck on. The fact that Owen had let his eyes wander over his perfectly sculpted—no…shit, Owen—over that piece of shit—yeah that’s better—disgusted him. Proof positive he just needed to get laid. Honorary Blogger Annabella Michaels: Where I Find Inspiration

Where I Find Inspiration

by Annabella Michaels

People often ask authors where they find the inspiration for their books. For me, the answer is many, many places. Sometimes it can be as simple as a commercial I see on TV or a person I see on the street. Other times, it’s something more personal which brings about the first inklings of a storyline.

My first book, Feeding the Soul, was inspired by my nephew who as a young, gay man believes in true love and wants nothing more than to find his HEA. Caleb Greene’s sweet nature, his loyalty to his family and his courage to be exactly who he was meant to be were all inspired by this incredible young man.

The inspiration for Zane’s location in FOUND is based on one of my favorite places in the world, a place where I spent nearly every summer growing up. I won’t give it away in case there are people who haven’t had the chance to read it yet, but everything about his location was inspired by the memories I have of that very special place.

Recently, I woke up with a full story in my mind. I’m not sure if I’d been dreaming it or not, but I could see everything clearly, as if I were watching a movie. I grabbed my phone off the nightstand and jotted everything down in my notes before I could forget. That was the first time that has ever happened to me and while I may never know what inspired it, I thought it was a really cool experience.

Music is also a great inspiration for me. Most of my ideas come when I’m driving alone in my car with the radio turned up. Occasionally, it’s whole book ideas, but most of the time it inspires the mood for certain scenes or feelings for the theme of the book or a particular character.

My advice for anyone wanting to write would be to open your ears, your eyes and your mind to all the possibilities around you. Inspiration is lurking in every corner and can come from the smallest of things. Continue reading

Honorary Blogger Aimee Nicole Walker: About Second Wind + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

About Second Wind

by Aimee Nicole Walker

Hello everyone. I want to thank The Blogger Girls for having me here to chat about my brand-new book, Second Wind. I’m going to talk about the inspiration for the story, give you a fun fact about the book, and share a teaser or excerpt.

About Second Wind:

The idea for Second Wind came to me while I was on vacation with my husband in eastern Tennessee. We hadn’t updated our GPS since the previous year, and the directions to the restaurant we chose for dinner took us to the back of a new high school where their outdoor athletic fields were located. So, my husband was angry as hell, but I was enthralled by the football field and the majestic mountain view for a backdrop. My creative brain fired up immediately, and I clearly saw a football game playing out. I heard the crowd cheering as the king of the gridiron scores a touchdown, the marching band playing their fight song, but what stood out in my imagination the most was the silhouette of another boy on the sideline taking pictures for the school paper and yearbook. I immediately knew three things: the king of the gridiron and the photographer were in love, nobody knew it, and their love story would take me on a journey I’d never forget.

In Second Wind, I try to honor the men and women all around the world who didn’t have an easy coming out experience or one at an early age. I tell the story of a man who tried to repress his true self to play by society’s rules and the journey he takes once he decided that living half of a life is not really living at all. I also try to show that members of the LGBTQ+ community don’t just come out one time; they have to come out each time they meet someone new. And most importantly, it’s never too late to find your happily ever after.

Fun fact about Second Wind:

I decided early on that I wanted to illustrate the interior of Second Wind. Now, I have zero artistic ability, and I was confident that no one wanted to see my stick figure drawings leading off each chapter. I turned to my amazing formatter, Stacey Blake of Champagne Book Designs, and she knocked it out of the park. She amazes me with each project that we work on together, but this one was so near and dear to my heart.

Rush received a Polaroid camera as a kid and his passion for photography was born. Cameras became his constant companion and his chosen profession. I wanted the illustrations to be a Polaroid photo of an object or situation that symbolized each chapter. For example, chapter one is a picture of two boys riding bikes. It represents a memory Rush has from when he and Lincoln were seven years old. Linc played lookout while Rush stole his older sister’s bike. He was fascinated by the banana seat, the handlebars with streamers, and the basket on the front. He wanted to ride it, but didn’t know how. Lincoln helped him steal the bike and taught him how to ride it. Working with Stacey to create beautiful images that really brought the story to life was so much fun.

I hope you enjoyed this behind the scene look at the making of Second Wind. That sounds a touch stuffy, doesn’t it. I hope you liked this peek into my brain. Better? Thank you so much for hanging out with me, and thanks again to The Blogger Girls for allowing me to talk about a project that I’m so passionate about.

Release Blitz: Blind Passion by Penny Brandon

Blind Passion by Penny Brandon

Attraction for Adam was not a handsome face, a striking smile, or beautiful eyes, but a scent that would drive him to distraction or a voice that could make his heart beat faster. When the combination of the two walked into his life in Luke, Adam couldn’t help but want him. But how was he supposed to know if Luke felt the same attraction? He had no prior experience, no past encounters, nothing to help him. Not even his sight.

One look at Adam and Luke wanted him. Sensual, gorgeous, kind, with a strength that Luke was drawn to, Adam was everything Luke desired. Being in Adam’s arms, showing him the pleasure of a man’s body, being touched, held, and desired in return, had Luke wanting more, had him wanting what he knew he couldn’t have.

It didn’t matter to him that Adam was blind, but Adam deserved more than someone like him. Luke was a man with a broken past and falling in love with Adam was a foolish thing to do, especially because Adam would never love him back if he found out what Luke was hiding.

Release Blitz: Pretty in Pink by Jay Northcote + Excerpt!

Pretty in Pink by Jay Northcote

Ryan isn’t looking for a relationship with a guy–and Johnny isn’t looking for a relationship at all.

Ryan’s always been attracted to tall, leggy blondes–normally of the female variety. When Johnny catches his eye at a party, Ryan’s interest is piqued even though he’s never been with a guy before. The attraction is mutual, and the amazing night that follows opens Ryan’s eyes to his bisexuality.

Experience has taught Johnny that love hurts. Staying single is safer, and there’s no need for complicated relationships when hooking up is easy. When he moves in next door to Ryan, they’re both interested in picking up where they left off, and it seems like an ideal arrangement: convenient, mutually satisfying, and with no strings attached.

Despite their best intentions to keep things casual, they develop an emotional connection alongside the physical one. Both begin to want more from the relationship but are afraid to admit it. If they’re going to work things out, they need to start being honest–first with themselves, and then with each other.

Although this book is part of the Housemates series, it has new main characters, a satisfying happy ending, and can be read as a standalone.
