Finding Matt by JD Ruskin: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

An Exclusive Excerpt from Finding Matt

Note: Detective Paulo Silva and Jaron Greenberg, local pet psychic, begin working together on the missing child case in this scene from Chapter 3.

Paulo walked around to the driver’s side and got behind the wheel. “According to your website, you get readings off objects that are special to pets. Is that right?”

“Yes,” Jaron said, his white brows puckered.

Paulo worked to keep his expression neutral. He pulled out a toy from the pocket of his leather jacket and handed it to Jaron. “What can you tell me about the dog it belongs to?”

Jaron sighed deeply. “Nothing, Detective Silva.”

Paulo cleared his throat. “I need you to call me Paulo.”

“Okay,” Jaron said, drawing out the word.

Paulo swore under his breath. “Uh, this is supposed to look like a dat—er—unofficial visit.”

“Oh, Chief Tucker did mention it was important not to talk to the press about the case because it could be bad if the kidnapper heard the police were bringing in a psychic. I’d never do anything to put Matt’s life at risk.”

Changing the subject, Paulo asked, “Why can’t you tell me about the dog?”

Jaron made a small, jittery movement with the toy. “It’s a cat toy.”

Paulo squinted at the toy. “It’s shaped like a dog. How can it be a cat toy?”

Jaron brought the toy to Paulo’s nose. “Cat. Nip.”

About Finding Matt

Finding Matt by JD Ruskin eBookWhen six-year-old Matt Wilson and his Shih Tzu, Pixie, step out of the Stanton Community Hospital and disappear, his desperate parents convince Jaron Greenberg, a local pet psychic, to aid the police in the search. Jaron specializes in finding lost kitties and fixing problem pooches. He isn’t prepared for a case with so much at stake. And as soon as he starts, the abilities he’s had since childhood begin changing and growing in unexpected ways.

Paulo Silva is a veteran detective new to the small town of Stanton. As the low man on the totem pole at Stanton PD, he isn’t happy when the chief assigns him to babysit the pet psychic instead of actively working the missing child case. As Jaron uncovers clues, Paulo starts to wonder if he might be the real thing. Or maybe it’s just his testosterone reacting to what he’s sure is mutual attraction.

Honorary Blogger Heloise West: Arts and Craft + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Arts and Craft

by Heloise West

The idea for the story started with an image and a conversation between two men. They were in the deep woods and one was trying to talk the other out of suicide. Gradually they began to tell me their story, and once that happened, the story didn’t waver. Well, it had its side trips, though not for long, and once it came to a screeching halt, but the basic idea just kept unraveling and unraveling until I found its core.

How it happens? I don’t know and maybe it’s best not to know?

I also am not a plotter, so I can’t sit down and decide what’s going to happen when. I don’t have that type of control over the unraveling of the story.

Sometimes I think it’s a conspiracy between my subconscious and unconscious mind, the creative muscle that I call the Angel in the Pit.  And my mother, because she was an artist and I grew up around creative process, surrounded by unfinished work, works in progress. So I feel stories in complex layers.

When you’re writing mystery, unseen forces work on your heroes.  Look at the central mystery–a missing person, a dead body, stolen work of art, and that’s your preliminary sketch. The writer has to fill in the detail to create the larger story with shading and underpinnings that complete the picture. Okay that’s true for most stories, but I think it’s particularly evident in mystery and suspense stories.

Much of what happens in this story is a front to what is really going on, but the writer has to make those facades work for the characters. Every character has his or hers deeper desires and goals, his/hers personal experience colors his/her perceptions. Those color the perception of the reader, also.

Characters are what make stories complex to varying degrees–I did know this story needed to have a lot of character elements going on in order to keep the suspense going, to keep the reader guessing and turning the page.

Thanks for having me here today!

An Excerpt from Hitting Black Ice

It was nine o’clock. They’d long lost the reservation. Hunter turned away from the warm lights of the restaurant, heart heavy. Shawn was too good to be true. For all he knew, he had a problem like Jerry’s, who’d often left him waiting, wondering, and ultimately fearing as dinner sat cold on the table. He gave in and took a step toward home.

“Hunter!”

He whipped around.

Shawn rushed toward him. He slipped on the snowy sidewalk, nearly going down, but Hunter ran at him, and they crashed together so hard his teeth clicked. Shawn’s arms went around him and his around Shawn, and they managed to hold each other up.

“I’m sorry,” were the first words out of Shawn’s mouth.

“All you deserve is pizza crusts,” Hunter mock-growled and kissed him, unconsciously trying to taste booze on his breath. Like Jerry and too many broken promises. Relieved it was only peppermint mouthwash, he didn’t stop kissing him.

When Hunter let him speak, Shawn said, “I’m starving, I’ll take it.” He pushed Hunter a little away from him. “Jesus. You’re freezing.”

“And starving. There’s a Greek pizza place down this way, come on—”

“I’ll make it up to you,” he said, taking Hunter’s hand.

Honorary Blogger John Simpson & Robert Cummings: The Making of a Marine + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

The Making of a Marine

by John Simpson & Robert Cummings

Robert Cummings and I decided to do a short story involving two Marine Recruits who are gay and leaving home to join for different reasons.

Since both Robert and I are former military, I’m former Police and Robert is current Police, we understand each other’s minds. Oh, and of course, we’re both gay.

We decided to show how the Marine Corps might be changing since it was the one that fought the hardest against the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

There has also been  a murder committed by a Marine against a member of the LGBT community since repeal, and this story attempts to portray the Marine Corps in a light that is better seen.

blogger_bee_trans

About The Marine

The MarineTwo young men, David Stauffer and Matthew Kendricks, meet while processing into the Marine Corps for Basic Training.  David is immediately attracted to the red haired, Matthew. As their training begins, David pursues Matthew to find out if the attraction is mutual.  To his great pleasure, David learns that his attentions are not unwelcomed, but rather feared. Matthew, unlike David isn’t as comfortable with his fellow trainees finding out he’s gay.

As training progresses David proves himself to be superior to the other trainees. As a reward, he is given   a short, on post leave and is allowed to take Matthew with him. This allows them a chance to explore each other’s bodies, rather than just glimpses in the showers.

From that moment the spark between the two burns hot and sets the stage for what is to come. When training ends, questions about their futures arise. Both men are forced to make decisions that will impact their futures, and potentially out them to the entire Marine Corps.

An Excerpt from The Marine

David and Matthew were drawn to each other like magnets. This was one of the few times they could lay on top of each other without anyone commenting on it. The tight green shirt pressed against David’s lean chest, Matthew licked his lips as they squared off to attack.

“You go first,” Matthew insisted.

David charged at Matthew full speed, the boy attempted to grab David’s wrist but was unsuccessful. David did not want to humiliate the Matthew in front of anyone so he stopped and backed up. He laid his hand on top of Matthew’s and placed the clammy hand where it needed to be for a successful hip throw.

Matthews’s shorts began to bulge out in the front, “Flip me.”

“You didn’t do yours yet,” David said confused.

“Flip me now, I’m getting hard,” Matthew whispered into David’s ear.

David smiled and grabbed the red head’s wrist. He flipped him onto the mat and leaned down to help him up. David pulled Matthew up.  While he dusted his back off he slightly brushed his hand against Matthews tight little bubble butt.

“You’re not helping,” Matthew protested.

A drill instructor came over to them, “What in the ever loving world are you two doing? I better see more flipping and less jawing, do you get me!”

“Sir, Yes Sir!” they replied in unison.

Honorary Blogger Z.A. Maxfield: Five Things You Need to Know + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Five Things You Need to Know

by Z.A. Maxfield

A happy hello and many thanks to The Blogger Girls for inviting me to be here today to share my latest book release, Hell On Wheels.

There are five things you need to know about Love Interest Spencer Kepler Constantine:

  1. He doesn’t express his emotions. Please, he’s English.
  2. He believes living in the public eye is the price he pays for doing what he loves. Up until his very public, acrimonious split from Peter Constantine, fame was his friend. Now, he feels humiliated and enraged. However, see #1.
  3. He has a personal assistant named Bast, and a bodyguard, Tui Makura, whom everyone calls Tick.
  4. He has a wry sense of humor, a decent heart, and is more than capable of learning from his many and sometimes disastrous mistakes.
  5. His car has broken down on the highway, late at night.

Enter Nash Holly, mechanic, bon vivant, hellraiser–the man who will change Spencer’s life forever

blogger_bee_trans

About Hell on Wheels

1Nash is the reliable one in the Holly family, the guy everyone counts on to keep things going. His genius twin brother is off at university, so Nash runs the family’s auto repair business and cares for his partially-paralyzed little sister while his crackpot father invents. His life seems mapped out for the foreseeable future, however much that might chafe.

So when Wolf’s Landing actor Spencer Kepler-Constantine lands in his life, Nash is ready for a diversion. Spencer is in the middle of a very painful, very public divorce and isn’t ready for a relationship—not that Nash wants one. But they both need a friend, especially one with benefits.

As they grow closer, Nash starts to see his family in a whole new light. Do they really need him so badly? Or does he simply need to be needed? Then Spencer’s ex reappears with a grand romantic gesture, and Nash has to figure out what he wants—and how to get it—before Spencer’s gone for good.

Three things reverberate throughout all her stories: Unconditional love, redemption, and the belief that miracles happen when we least expect them.

If anyone asks her how a wife and mother of four can find time for a writing career, she’ll answer, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you give up housework.”

Honorary Blogger Joanna Chambers: Unlocking Stories and the Key to The Dream Alchemist + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Unlocking Stories and the Key to The Dream Alchemist

by Joanna Chambers

One thing I’ve come to realise about my writing is that sometimes my ideas have to brew for a while. I usually do a whole pile of plotting and characterisation up front, but quite often, once that phase is over, I’ll put those plans aside and go back to an older idea and take that forward instead.

Like my other novels, The Dream Alchemist was conceived and plotted out in detail several years before I wrote it. I remember the flurry of initial energy I expended on it. It was February and I was on a family holiday. The living room of our rented cottage had a real fire and the evenings were spent—after the children went to bed—scribbling down the nuts and bolts of my world of dreams, Somnus, in a little notebook in front of the flames.

When the holiday was over, I wrote a chunk of the story, maybe 15k—but… it felt off. And anyway, by then another, older idea had grabbed me by the throat, so I abandoned it. The older idea became the Enlightenment trilogy, so it was three books later and late 2013 before I picked up The Dream Alchemist again, and at that point, when I reread both my notes and the 15k chunk I’d written, I saw why I’d fallen out of love with it years before: one of my main characters was all wrong.

I had no issue with the other main character—Laszlo Grimm. Him I could see needle-sharp, and I loved the central idea of him—a man who doesn’t experience emotion. A man who cannot feel. But the other main character just wasn’t clicking with me. That’s the good thing about having a fallow period with a story—it gives you that little bit of perspective. I ripped huge chunks out of that old, partial draft and began searching for a new main character

And that’s when Bryn Llewelyn came to me: a messed-up, strung-out drop-out with a penchant for silver rings and leather bracelets. A guy whose dreamwalking abilities impact on his real world life by muting his senses, inhibiting his appetites. A man who—like Laszlo Grimm—cannot feel, although his problem is with sensation, rather than emotion.

Yes.

Finding Bryn was the key to unlocking this story. The parallels and contrasts around him and Laszlo excited me, and I rewrote that original chunk quickly, then rattled off the rest of the first draft pretty quickly (for me) thanks to those old detailed blueprints. The revisions were hell, of course, but they always are 😉

I like to think Bryn was always there, in those notes and in that draft, fighting to be seen. Or maybe just waiting for me to see him.

blogger_bee_trans

About The Dream Alchemist

1When the sun goes down, their passion awakens…and so do their nightmares.

Centuries ago, a man with Bryn Llewelyn’s dreamwalking ability would have been a shaman or a priest. In this time, he’s merely exhausted, strung out on too much caffeine and too little sleep.

Sleep means descent into Somnus—an alternate reality constructed of the combined dreaming consciousness of ordinary humans. A place he’d rather avoid. Trouble is, his powers don’t include the ability to go without sleep indefinitely. At some point his eyes close…and his nightmare begins.

As a teen, the treatment that cured Laszlo Grimm’s sleep disorder stole his dreams—and his ability to feel emotion. Petrified of needing more “treatment”, he clings to familiar rituals and habits. But lately his nightly terror has returned, and when he meets Bryn in the real world, the man seems hauntingly familiar. Not only that, Bryn awakens feelings in Laszlo for the first time in years…

Slowly Bryn and Laszlo realize they are both unknowing pawns in a plan of unspeakable evil. And that their powerful attraction could release the destinies locked within them—or be the instrument of their doom.

Out of CTRL by SA Welsh: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

An Exclusive Excerpt from Out of CTRL

Just as they reached the door, it opened and another enormous man stepped through it. Do they only let genetically superior beings in here?

In the doorway stood the most handsome man he’d ever seen—in his entire life.

Andrew was so busy admiring the newcomer that he didn’t hear Steve talking to him until he was nudged and given a weird look. The man was at least six-foot-seven and had massive shoulders and biceps that stretched the navy T-shirt he wore to the absolute limit.

Andrew experienced the weirdest sense of recognition but he was certain he’d have remembered meeting this man before.

The fellow offered him a warm smile with perfect teeth and the most familiar dimple on the left side of his mouth. Sandy blond hair kissed the top of perfectly curved ears, the strands sticking up at odd angles, probably from a fire helmet. Eyes bluer than the whole damn Mediterranean Sea stared down at Andrew with shock and gave him an even stronger sense of déjà vu.

“Huh?” Andrew blurted.

Steve gave him the look again that told him they were going to talk about this later. “I said do you want to meet my groomsman?”

“Uh yeah, sure,” he answered distractedly.

“Theodore I want you to meet—”

The man—Theodore—brushed aside Steve’s introduction with one giant hand. “I know who he is, Steve. It’s been a long time, Drew.”

There was no mistaking that voice. Andrew might not recognize the body—and damn what a body it was—but no one could fake that voice. Rich, deep, and just the right note of sweet and sexy to make Andrew want to drop to his knees and find religion.

blogger_bee_trans

About Out of CTRL

Andrew had no intention of ever going back home. But circumstances force him to face his painful past and the friend who betrayed him. Andrew Finley has no intention of going back to his hometown—ever. After he’s caught hacking into the CIA, he builds himself a new life as a computer guy for the very government agency he hacked. But over the past few months, something has been bothering him, and his boss is acting more paranoid than usual. Every time an operation fails, Andrew collects information that could prove someone is selling secrets. Now he’s pretty sure his boss is trying to kill him, so he has no choice but to go back home to buy some time. Home may be more dangerous than facing his boss. Nine years ago, his former best friend and first crush Teddy betrayed him, and let his evil sister and her minions send him running.

But he’s back now and not everything is as clear-cut as he thought. Teddy may not be a Judas but can Andrew catch his fireman without getting burned, or is coming home going to kill him?

One corrupt boss, one evil sister, enough family drama to fill a dozen daytime chat shows and an ex-best friend whom he’s been in love with for half his life makes for one hell of an interesting trip home.

Honorary Blogger A.F. Henley: Authors Writing Authors + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Authors Writing Authors

by A.F. Henley

As I’ve already stated earlier in the tour, my intentions at the beginning of this let’s-introduce-the-world-to-The Chase and The Catch-journey where simple ones: offer up an excerpt, run a giveaway, and tack on a purchasing link to send the interested in the right direction. The Blogger Girls were having none of my lazy-ass shenanigans. So for them, with my thanks, I thought I’d discuss the concept of authors writing author MCs.

There are few things in life that I find quite as amusing as the idea that authors who write authors are involved in the act of self-insertion. Don’t get me wrong, self-insertion is a wonderful thing and I highly recommend it. I just prefer my acts of self-insertion to take place in the shower or the bedroom with an instrument of indulgence, if you know what I’m getting at.

But… but… (says the skeptical, unimpressed critic) obviously if you’re writing about an author that means you’re representing yourself with the character!

To which I say, now wouldn’t that be quite the story. Let’s imagine it, shall we?  A forty-some storyteller who eats too much pizza, drinks too much wine, avoids sunlight and people at almost any cost, and spends way, way too much time on tumblr and CockyBoys. Anybody interested? Is there a line forming anywhere for publishing rights to that particular story? No… I didn’t imagine there would be.

Just so I’m clear – I love my life. It’s perfect… For me. Not for my characters.

I personally believe that authors write author MCs for the same reason that a businessman would write about an executive and a health professional would write about a doctor – relatability, ease of placement, and an understanding of existing issues. That’s it. Plain and simple. It has nothing to do with living vicariously through the character (though don’t we all do that with fiction somewhat?).

We’re all looking for connection, be it physical, emotional, or intellectual. It’s a basic human desire. However, finding a love interest like Parker Chase is not, shall we say, high on my list of things to do before I die. I doubt there would be many people that are actively looking for mind games or attitude-rich power plays. Let me put it this way – if I was self-inserting into this story, the attractive and calculating Mr. Chase would still be roasting over some form of open fire as I type this.

I do love writing about them, though; almost as much as I love reading about them. Cracking a character like in fiction is exciting. It’s rewarding. It’s overcoming obstacles and finding something interesting in the middle of a shit-storm. That’s what romance-based fiction is all about.

So to that end, I reiterate that the endearing author in The Chase and The Catch has no more to do with me than the fact that we share the same term on our resumes.

My huge thanks to The Blogger Girls for having me by, and an extra special thank you for your blog post request. It’s been an honour to be a guest on your site.
AF Henley ❤

About The Chase and the Catch

The Chase and the Catch [Ebook]After one of his fans committed suicide, John lost everything: lover, confidence, drive. When he is given a chance to get back on his feet, he is happy to take it—even if it’s just writing an actor’s autobiography. It might not be romance, or even fiction, but it’s something, and there are worse people to work for than the charming, successful Parker Chase.

That doesn’t mean working for Parker is easy, however. A staunch supporter of living for the moment, Parker goes against everything John believes in. He feels out of place in every moment of Parker’s Hollywood life, stuck in a game of wits that at times seems almost contrived…

An Excerpt from The Chase and the Catch

Brilliant sunlight shot daggers of pain into John’s eyes and he fumbled for his sunglasses with one hand, blocking with the other, as if, somehow, a single leather-gloved hand would do any good against the assault. Snow had fallen the previous night and everything gleamed with the lustre of freshly polished silver. The parking lot was a postcard-worthy image of pristine white surfaces surrounded by burdened evergreen branches and puff-capped fence posts—the kind of scene that a year prior would have found John dragging out his tablet, inspired into tapping words about flush-cheeked kiddies or curiously joyful rodents. Now the view just made him want to growl about delays and inconveniences.

“Did you call ahead?”

John adjusted his sunglasses, flipped up his collar, and thumbed at the dash of the car. “Yeah. No flight delays. Pop the trunk, will you?” When his sister didn’t react, John tilted his head and sighed. “What?”

She didn’t hesitate, but then Jenna never did. With everyone in his life still treating him like he was going to explode into a million shards of anxiety every time he opened his mouth, Jenna could be counted on to speak when she felt like she needed to. And even the times when she just damn well wanted to. “You don’t have to do this.”

“Actually, no, I really do.” He worked up a smile. “I mean, I could drive, but the weather’s kind of shitty and it would take me something like thirty-five hours.”

“I don’t mean the flying and you know it.” Jenna snagged his jacket when John reached for the door handle. “You don’t have to run off and do this. The writing will come back to you when you’re ready. Since when does a person trade poetry and romance for scribbling down some guy’s autobiography?”

John held up a finger. “Biography. My perspective. An autobiography would be—”

“What the fuck ever. Don’t change the subject. Let’s just say that this does end up being a good thing for your career.” She caught his gaze when he looked up with another smile, and pursed her lips. “It won’t be. But regardless. Why do you have to go down there? Why can’t you do it like a normal twenty-first century human being and use Skype? Or you know, the telephone? Why do you have to be a billion miles away from home? I can’t be the only one who thinks this isn’t the smartest idea you’ve ever come up with. You haven’t exactly been…” She tapped her temple. “Well.”

John rolled his eyes and drew a snort of disgust through his nostrils in the extended, too loud way that he knew drove her crazy.

Jenna’s grip tightened into a fist. “Seriously. I’ve done some research on this guy, John—”

“Really?” John feigned absolute shock. “Me too! Weird…”

“I’m just not sure you’ve thought this all the way through. The guy can be an asshole. Self-centered, pompous—”

He disengaged Jenna’s fingers from his coat, placed her hand on the seat, and patted the back of it. “I’m sure his fans would disagree. As a matter of fact, most of them would have you drawn and quartered for even daring to think such a thing.”

“I couldn’t give a single fuck about any of his fans.” Her fingertips began to play a beat on the vinyl seat. “I care about you. And you already feel bad enough without immersing yourself into the life of a narcissist—”

John whistled through his teeth. “Harsh.”

“Read the blogs.”

John rolled his eyes and snapped the handle of the door. The onslaught of cold air was immediate. A good thing, John decided. It would get him out of the car that much faster if Jenna was shivering like a Chihuahua. “I’ve read the blogs. And I’ve read his Twitter and stalked his Tumblr and, and, and. He’s interesting. There’s a good story hidden behind that damn mask he’s been wearing for the last decade, and I want to be the one to dig it out.”

“You write romance—”

“No.” John drew himself out of the car and then turned back to lock up their eyes. “I write. Plain and simple. Now, please, pop the trunk. Because if I miss this flight due to the fact you’re holding my luggage hostage, I swear to God that I will make you pay for the next one. First class, nonetheless.”

He shut the door with a solid swing and walked to the back of the car to wait for the latch to release. The sound of the trunk popping was almost simultaneous with the clunk of the driver’s door opening.

“You call every day,” Jenna said, rounding the car, the high heels of her boots managing to click soundly even through the layer of snow. “I mean every fucking day.”

John dragged two suitcases out of the car and nodded at the open trunk. “I will. Get that for me, please?”

She ignored the trunk to worry her hands against one another. “And take your medication.”

“I haven’t been on meds for weeks now.” It was somewhat of a lie, but John soothed himself with the thought that the statement was mostly true. He still took the sleeping pills, but the antidepressants were gone. Thank fuck.

“By doctor’s orders or your own?” Jenna’s glare was colder than the wind.

John leaned forward, kissed Jenna on the cheek, and turned towards the glass doors of the airport. “Be good, Jen. And get back in the car before you freeze to death. Mom would kill you if she saw you out here in that jacket.”

“I can park,” Jenna called. “Come in and sit with you?”

“No time.” He kicked the silver disc that would operate the automatic door. “Flight’s probably already boarding.” He slipped through the half-open door. “Drive safe.”

“And what do I do if Sam calls?”

John bit back the reaction to tell Jenna she could invent new ways to penetrate the man with large, unforgiving objects, and pass them on to Sam in graphic detail. Instead: “He won’t.”

“But if he does?”

“He won’t.”

She was still standing beside the open trunk when he turned to walk away. She was worried. They all were: his agent, his parents, and his friends; her husband Mark, and probably both their terriers and their entire tank of fish. Not that he could blame them. It hadn’t been a good year. He’d always been able to use his writing to get him away from his problems, a retreat of sorts, where he could work things out in his head before having to deal with them. So when the words had abandoned him, be it in retaliation for the pills he’d taken too frequently, or because his brain was too busy focusing on the images of horror that kept playing through it, John had thought he was going to lose his mind.

Confusion had become depression. Panic escalated into obsessive-compulsive behaviour. He was no longer ‘that crazy writer.’ He was just fucking crazy.

“But this is writing,” John mumbled, staring at the flight board and trying to make his eyes focus on the words that would tell him where to go. “It’s still writing.” After all, what biography wasn’t spiced a bit here and there? Perspective was everything. And if Mr. Parker Chase—actor-extraordinaire, supposed-charmer, but potentially more-of-an-egotistical-dick-than-his-agent-would-like-anyone-to-know—was willing to let John be the one to offer that perspective, then it didn’t matter that the story wasn’t fiction. Or romance. Or even working its way towards a happy ending. He could live with the compromise just to be at it again.

About A.F. Henley

AF Henley_Avatar croppedHenley was born with a full-blown passion for run-on sentences, a zealous indulgence in all words descriptive, and the endearing tendency to overuse punctuation. Since the early years Henley has been an enthusiastic writer, from the first few I-love-my-dog stories to the current leap into erotica.

A self-professed Google genius, Henley lives for the hours spent digging through the Internet for ‘research purposes’ which, more often than not, lead seven thousand miles away from first intentions but bring Henley to new discoveries and ideas that, once seeded, tend to flourish.

Henley has been proudly working with LT3 since 2012, and has been writing like mad ever since—an indentured servant to the belief that romance and true love can mend the most broken soul. Even when presented in prose.

Honorary Blogger Talia Carmichael: Romancing by Words

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Romancing by Words

by Talia Carmichael

I love romance and all that it entails. As each part unfolds I can’t wait to take part and enjoy it. There are so many things that follow people falling in love. It’s a journey for them to meld their lives together. As I write each word on a page I want to draw the reader in and make them part of the fabric of the story. I want them to feel, live and be part of the story. Capturing the mind, heart and soul of a reader is my goal just as it is my characters on their journey to fall in love.

Words have power and the usage of them takes skill. When I read books I want to be drawn into the words and see everything play out in my mind. Romance can range from being a subtle foray to all out I want you.  The teasing and banter back and forth between people can be so sexy. Using words to tease and tantalize. There is so much that can be revealed from sensual banter. A tease between characters that leads to sparks.

Best Laid Intentions (Impressions #6) has that banter and teasing with words. My heroes are both attracted to each other. But, when the book starts they haven’t come out and said so…yet. When they do it’s a melding of two likeminded people. They want each other. It is so interesting to see their interactions that lead to more. The using of words to build the romance was fun to do. Savage is a musician who uses his music to portray what he feels. He’s also good at stating what he desires once he knows what he wants. This works well with the other hero, Taylor. He owns a music store and he wants Savage, however he knows it can’t be anything but sexual. Taylor is more than willing to be with Savage except he finds himself wondering if it is a good idea. Savage awakened feelings in him that he doesn’t expect.

These two men use playful teases and interactions to get to know each other. They joke and are so comfortable with each other. With each conversation their romance is built word by word, which is the sexiest of things to me. Seducing the mind with words first then everything after will bring a deeper connection. I always enjoy romancing with words.

About Best Laid Intentions

This is book six in the Impressions series, see the full series listing here.

Taking a risk and going after what he wants leads a man to the most pleasurable of results…

Taylor Noble decides to take a chance on pursuing Savage. Savage makes him crave but Taylor knows that anything beyond the physical would be foolish. He has too much on his plate for a relationship. But he can have a good time… After all, there’s no way Savage would want more. And Taylor certainly doesn’t either… Yet, as he gets to know Savage, Taylor finds himself questioning his plans for fun with no strings.

From their very first meeting, Savage Griffin is drawn to Taylor. There’s something Savage cannot define that’s so different when he sees, thinks or talks to Taylor. Knowing Taylor is interested gives him the opportunity to explore more about this man who has captured his attention. Savage plans to take advantage of it. Each and every moment—sexual and platonic—brings him closer to Taylor, who captures all his senses. Now it’s just a matter of convincing Taylor that what they share goes way past the physical to the emotional. Yes, emotions are messy but Savage is ready, willing and able to get Taylor to change his best laid intentions and make some new plans.

Honorary Blogger Isabel Cooper: Dragons and Highlanders, A Match Made in Heaven

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Dragons and Highlanders, A Match Made in Heaven

by Isabel Cooper

I grew up in the country, and I mean seriously in the country: from eight to fourteen (and then eighteen, on vacations) I spent my time in a place where you needed to drive twenty minutes to buy a quart of milk, where we only got three TV channels and two of those were fuzzy most of the time, and where getting to school sometimes involved wading across a creek. While the other places my folks lived weren’t quite as remote, we were never city people, or even suburb people. Going up to visit my parents during college involved taking a bus for six hours, to the point where the stops weren’t so much bus stations as gas stations (and, in one case, an unlit covered bridge), and then driving for another forty-five minutes.

There’s a lot of space in places like that. You can get lost—people do, and did, all the time—and you can also hide things. “Things” might be objects, or secrets, or yourself. The small town where everyone knows everyone else’s business might be real, but once you get a lot of room and not that many people, there’s some business maybe nobody knows.

I’ve never turned into a dragon, nor have I ever met anyone who did. (Weirder parts of the Internet, please refrain from comment.) If I did, though, I don’t think I’d have an easy time doing it in Boston: city people (which I kind of am now) are good at minding our own business, but there’s only so much you can ignore something of that size, and cities don’t have a lot of space to transform in secret. Plus, the more populated a place is, the more likely that what happens there hits the rest of the world—and that was true even back in the 1890s, when the hot new technology was the telegraph.

Now, the Highlands certainly have cities, particularly these days, and technology gets around pretty well, as does news. But the Highlands in popular culture are isolated places, places separated from the rest of the world by geography, history, and a certain independence of spirit. Space makes it easier to keep secrets—even dragon-sized secrets—and so does age, and centuries of having and guarding their own traditions. That made the Highlands a good place to hold a mystery, or to be the homeland of men and women whose background includes more secrets than most people’s.

21897519Regina Talbot-Jones has always known her rambling family home was haunted. She also knows her brother has invited one of his friends to attend an ill-conceived séance. She didn’t count on that friend being so handsome… and she certainly didn’t expect him to be a dragon.

Scottish Highlander Colin MacAlasdair has hidden his true nature for his entire life, but the moment he sets eyes on Regina, he knows he has to have her. In his hundreds of years, he’s never met a woman who could understand him so thoroughly… or touch him so deeply. Honorary Blogger Charlie Cochrane: Write What You Know? + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Write What You Know?

by Charlie Cochrane

They say you should write what you know. My response to that is, “Stuff and nonsense!” If people only wrote what they knew we’d have no Lord of the Rings (Tolkien was neither ent nor elf) or the Aubrey/Maturin books (Patrick O’Brian was never an officer in the age of sail). Taken to its logical, if excessive, conclusion, writing only what you know means everything has to be semi-autobiographical, because as soon as you write about any other person, in any setting other than the ones you’ve experienced, you’re writing what you don’t know for certain.

How desperately dull would that be, for both author and reader?

However, I’m not an advocate of “write about any and everything”. The author has to be able to create a world which feels authentic. O’Brian did masses of research for his Jack Aubrey books and it shows in the wonderful atmosphere he creates. Ditto Mary Renault with her books set in Ancient Greece. The dialogue, surroundings, clothes, manners and all the rest of it, must make a cohesive whole.

2014 is definitely the year of me writing about something I know very well, and that’s being a school governor. Now, before you roll your eyes and yawn, let me assure you that tensions can run very high in committee meetings. People care greatly about their schools and their children, and where people care, emotions flare up. Absolutely great fiction-fodder! I also train school governors (and my goodness, you meet some interesting characters in those sessions). I remember coming away from a selection and interviewing course thinking, “There’s a story to be told there,” not least because of the potential double entendres, and the fun you can have taking the mickey out of the jargon that tends to crop up.

Earlier this year MLR published my short story, Horns and Haloes, inspired by the experiences I’ve had running that course (and noting some of the daft questions people want to ask). That’s a sweet, funny little romance; while it was gestating, I had bigger fish frying. The idea for “The Best Corpse for the Job” arose when I was driving back from a school where I’d been delivering some training to help with their process of selecting a new headteacher. The session had been nicely sparky, and it occurred to me that if that sparkiness had been channelled in the wrong direction, blows could have been exchanged.

Both of these tales involve gay school governors. I must have met some of those, among the hundreds I’ve trained over the last few years, although I rarely get to train any governors as fit as Adam Matthews, the teacher governor from Best Corpse. I know of at least three gay headteachers at schools within twenty miles of where I’m on a governing body. They’re all three bloody good at their jobs, and why shouldn’t they be? And two of them are at church schools, so I had no qualms making my men work at church schools, too. That’s the reality of life. If anybody argues, and says that’s not realistic, I can back myself very well. I’m writing about what I know.

About The Best Corpse for the Job

22741222Tea and sympathy have never been so deadly.

Schoolteacher Adam Matthews just wants to help select a new headteacher and go home. The governors at Lindenshaw St Crispin’s have already failed miserably at finding the right candidate, so it’s make or break this second time round. But when one of the applicants is found strangled in the school, what should have been a straightforward decision turns tempestuous as a flash flood in their small English village.

Inspector Robin Bright isn’t thrilled to be back at St. Crispin’s. Memories of his days there are foul enough without tossing in a complicated murder case. And that handsome young teacher has him reminding himself not to fraternize with a witness. But it’s not long before Robin is relying on Adam for more than just his testimony.

As secrets amongst the governors emerge and a second person turns up dead, Robin needs to focus less on Adam and more on his investigation. But there are too many suspects, too many lies, and too many loose ends. Before they know it, Robin and Adam are fighting for their lives and their hearts.
