Exclusive Excerpt from Buck Baxter and the Disappearing Divas

With a Special Intro from Buck Himself

So you ain’t met me yet? Maybe some of you have, maybe some of you haven’t. The name’s Buck… Buck Baxter, Private Detective. I’m the best gumshoe in Wilde City, probably on account of the fact that the other detectives in this crazy town are all schmucks and snitches. Which is bad for them, good for me, ‘cause in place like Wilde City there’s more mysteries to be solved than bootleg booze stashed away in Bugsy Brown’s hideout. After all, it is the roaring ‘20s. The jazz is loud, parties are big, and the gin is straight off the back of a truck. Here in Wilde City there’s only three types of people: the lovers, the famous and the dead. Me? I ain’t famous, and I wasn’t dead last time I checked… but thanks to the arrival of playboy millionaire Holden Hart in town, well there might just be a chance of me becoming someone’s lover yet. That man is the ant’s pants, the bee’s knees, the cat’s meow… if you catch my drift.

So you wanna know more? Of course you do, curiosity is a good thing… unless of course it gets you killed, which is what almost happened to me in my first mystery, Buck Baxter, Love Detective. And to whet your appetite for a little more, here’s a taste of what’s to come in my second mystery, Buck Baxter and the Disappearing Divas. Strange things are happening at the Maharaja Majestic Theatre on the eve of its new production, and Stella Starling—my new personal assistant—and I are on the case. Of course, I use the job description ‘personal assistant’ loosely, because it would imply that there’s some ‘assisting’ involved. But Stella bein’ who she is—a three-foot-tall hooker with tiny legs and a big voice—the word ‘assisting’ don’t quite fit the bill. Will we get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding this phantom at the opera… or will it be curtains for me and Stella?

Picture this—

Beyond the skyscrapers of Wilde City, at the lower end of Broadville Boulevard, the Maharaja Majestic Theatre stood like a towering temple from some exotic, far-away land. It’s façade was lined with two dozen thick, marble columns, adorned with sculptures of snakes and sirens, while gigantic cast-iron lanterns hung from the architraves of entrance way. The building rose maybe five stories high, every cornice and cranny crammed with angels and devils, gods and ghosts, all housed under one colossal dome. It was a cultural melting pot, the timeless tales of both east and west converging on a single shrine of storytelling, a mosque of music… and now perhaps, an opera house of horror.

I met Stella on the corner opposite the theatre a few minutes after eleven.

“Glad you could make it,” she tapped her toe impatiently.

“I got a little caught up in something.”

“Or someone, more like it,” she said, crossing her arms. “Next time, your cutesy blond boyfriend can take a number, toots. We got a mystery to solve, capiche?”

“Don’t say capiche again.”

“Why not? I’m half Italian, you know.”

“No you’re not.”

Stella shrugged. “Okay, so maybe I dated a guy once who was half Italian. That counts, don’t it?”

“Dated?”

“Okay, so maybe he paid me to date him. Money can sometimes buy some poor schmuck true love, ya know. Capiche?”

I took a deep breath and changed the subject. “Let’s go crack this case.”

***

The auditorium of the Maharaja Majestic was ritzy to say the least. Plush, red velvet curtains covered the walls on all sides. The seats were ornate, each with a sculpted finish and velvet armrests. Tiered theatre balconies lined both sides of the theatre for patrons with enough money to pay for such exclusive seating.

On the massive stage—in front of the elaborately painted set of an Indian palace—a handful of people stood including Raja Khan. He saw Stella and me and called out to us.

“Ah, Mr. Baxter, Miss Starling, please come and meet the key members of my cast and crew. At least those of them who have arrived so far.”

Stella and I made our way up the stairs at the side of the stage beside the orchestra pit. Stella’s eyes were wide and full of wonder as she gazed all around, taking in every little detail of the dream-like world surrounding us. “Wow, I always wanted to be on the stage,” she whispered to me as we walked the boards toward the others.

“Now’s your big chance,” I whispered back. “Act smooth. Observe every move these people make. Every stutter. Every sneeze. Every sideways glance. Take in everything.”

“Will do, toots.”

“And don’t call me toots in front of them. We’re supposed to be professionals.”

“Will do, t—” She stopped herself and whispered, “Well heck, if I can’t call you toots, what should I call you?”

“How about boss?”

Stella started laughing out loud. “No, I’m serious. What should I call you?”

“Buck will do fine,” I answered through clenched teeth.

We stopped at the small group gathered on the stage. There was one woman and three men, including Raja Khan. The woman was young, thin and pretty, with large doe eyes and ruby-red lips. Her hair was crimped and curled in the latest fashion. Her eyelashes were long, her nose small and her teeth white; she had the unmistakable look of a starlet waiting to be discovered. The man on Raja’s left looked humble and homely, not the kind of theatrical gentleman anyone would expect to find on a stage. His coat was oversized, possibly to make up for his modest frame. His hair was thin and slicked across his scalp to cover his baldness. By contrast, the man on Raja’s right stood tall with pride and a definite arrogance. He wore a black scarf, bowtie and black top hat as though it was already opening night. His moustache was so pencil thin it looked painted on. In his hand he held a long black cigarette holder with a cigarette alight at the end, sending more wisps of smoke into the air than into his lungs, giving me the impression this man—whoever he was—liked his props both on and off the stage.

“Everybody,” Raja began, “I’d like you to meet Mr. Buck Baxter and his assistant Miss Stella Starling. As you all know, last night after rehearsal, our beloved leading lady Miss Dominique Darlington vanished, allegedly kidnapped… or worse.”

“She was a star who shone brighter than no other,” said the man in the top hat in a crisp British accent.

“We couldn’t agree more, Barnabas,” nodded Raja.

“Yet the show must go on!” Barnabas, the man in the top hat, added rather theatrically.

Raja nodded again. “We couldn’t agree more with that, as well. And so it is I’ve asked Mr. Baxter here to investigate Miss Darlington’s disappearance as, well, discreetly as possible, while we continue with rehearsals.”

Barnabas stepped in again, even more dramatically than before. “Opening night is only six days away. Rest assured the curtain will rise. The stage will light up. The audience will stand in ovation!”

Stella leaned toward me and whispered behind her hand, “Sheesh, someone hand that chowderhead Yorick’s skull. He sure loves a monologue!”

If Raja heard her, he ignored it. “Mr. Baxter, Miss Starling, let me introduce you to Barnabas Blake, the director of our show.”

Barnabas eyed us both with one eyebrow raised in suspicion. “I’m sure you’re pleased to make our acquaintance, but do either of you have any experience in the theatre?”

“What’s that got to do with anything?” I asked.

Barnabas cleared his throat, as though he had been asked to cough up the obvious. “The men and women of the theatre are a special breed. Creative. Talented. Sophisticated. Unique. A higher class. There’s nothing common about us. We exist above the great unwashed. Of course, if you’re familiar with our kind, we may consider co-operating. So I’ll ask again, do either of you have any experience in the theatre?”

“No offence, sir,” I answered. “But we’re here to solve a crime, not audition.”

“And if you don’t co-operate,” Stella piped up, “the next stage you walk on might have a noose hangin’ from the rafter and a trapdoor in the floor. You catch my drift?”

“Are you threatening me, little girl?”

“I will if you call me a little girl again, you pompous putz!”

“Settle down,” I said, holding Stella back before she raced over and kicked Barnabas in the shin. I realized then that the second victim in this mystery was going to be my patience. I decided a hit of nicotine was in order. “Mind if I smoke?” I asked Raja.

“Go ahead,” Raja answered. “Our humble director hasn’t stopped smoking since the day he was hired. If fate wanted to shut down this show by burning the place to the ground, it would have done so by now.”

Barnabas’ eyebrows launched up his forehead while his nose twitched and his pencil-thin moustache did an angry little dance. “Oh pah-lease! You’re the one who approved candles for the iron chandelier dangling above the stage in The Dance of the Cobra scene. If that’s not a fire hazard I don’t know what is.”

“Besides, it appears fate has other plans for this show.” The words seemed ominous and came from the meekest voice among us. We all turned to the pretty girl with the large doe eyes. “The disappearance of Miss Darlington, I mean. It seems rather… foreboding.”

Nobody said anything for a moment until Raja took the opportunity to introduce her. “Mr. Baxter, Miss Starling, this is Olivia Overton, Miss Darlington’s understudy.”

She held out her hand rather timidly and dipped her chin demurely. “Pleased to meet you both. I don’t expect I’ll ever be anything but an understudy—I’m currently playing ‘Slavegirl in Blue’ in The Veils of Midnight dance—but perhaps some day I’ll see my name in lights. Well, a girl can dream.”

“Some people are willing to do anything to make their dream come true,” I commented.

Miss Overton caught my meaning and immediately pleaded her innocence. In fact, she almost begged for it. “Oh, Mr. Baxter. I had nothing to do with Miss Darlington’s disappearance, I swear to you. Besides, I’m hardly strong enough to carry away someone like Miss Darlington and just disappear into the night like that.”

She had a point.

She also had a motive.

I needed that smoke now.

I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out my pipe and matches. Oddly enough, I saw out of the corner of my eye Stella reach into her clutch bag and pull out her own pipe and matches. As I lit mine, she lit hers. I noticed everyone looking at us oddly. I shot her a look and pulled her aside, whispering, “What are you doing?”

“Lightin’ a smoke,” Stella shrugged. “You heard Raja. If twinkle-toes in the top hat can light one up, so can I.”

“Since when did you own a pipe?” I whispered a little more harshly.

“Since I bought one at the drugstore on my way here. You didn’t like me smokin’ yours so I got my own. If anyone’s to blame here it’s you. I was happy to share.”

She puffed and I took a sniff. “Is that pot? My pot?”

“Just a teensy bit. You didn’t have much left.”

“We’re on a case. You’re supposed to smoke tobacco at a time like this. Plain old tobacco. You can’t smoke pot now!”

“You smoke it all the time.”

“Not in front of clients.”

Stella put one hand on her hip and held her pipe in the other, talking in between puffs. “See, this is where you need to communicate more. You’re not very good at communicating things, Buck Baxter.”

“That’s because I never had a personal assistant before. And I’m beginning to wonder why I’ve got one now!”

“Because ya love me. Whaddaya need a memo, toots?”

“And don’t call me toots! It’s—”

“Mr. Baxter, is everything alright?” I spun about to see Raja Khan, and the others, staring at us both.

“We’re fine. Just comparing notes.” I quickly made my way back to the group, dragging Stella along behind me. “We’d of course like to talk to everyone individually, but to begin with, we’d like to have a word with the witness to Miss Darlington’s disappearance.”

The homely-looking man in the oversized coat stepped forward. “That would be me. Stanley Small’s the name. I’m the stage manager here at the Maharaja Majestic.”

“Stanley has worked with us for over ten years,” Raja said, “He’s managed all the staging, lighting, props and sets for every show we’ve produced since 1914. I assure you, he’s no killer.”

“With all due respect, Mr. Khan, we’re investigating a disappearance. Nobody said anything about killing,” I said.

“With all due respect, Mr. Baxter,” Stanley interjected in a grave voice. “I saw what happened that night. I saw the attacker strangling Miss Darlington with her feather boa. I saw her body fall into his arms before he vanished. I don’t wanna scare nobody, but she sure looked dead to me. I know Mr. Khan told the police that she’s left town, but wherever Miss Darlington is right now, she ain’t coming back.”

“Bravo!” exclaimed a loud, brash voice from the back of the auditorium. “That’s the best news I’ve heard all week!”

All eyes turned to a tall figure standing at the back of the theatre in the center aisle. Confidently the figure stepped forward into the light, revealing itself to be an immaculately-dressed woman in her early fifties with a silver streak in her raven black hair. She grinned from ear to diamond-studded ear as she strutted down the aisle waving a piece of paper in one hand.

Stepping up onto the stage she announced, “I have here in my hand a telegram from the one and only Signora Aria Valentina direct from Rome. She has agreed to take the next airship from Italy to Wilde City to take over Miss Darlington’s role and star in our production of The Snake Charmer’s Slave!”

“But I thought…” Miss Overton muttered in defeat and disappointment, her words quickly fading to silence.

The woman with the telegram in her hand laughed. “Oh my dear, I know life can be a little over-rated and underwhelming sometimes for someone like you. But the truth is you’re nothing but an understudy, Miss Overton. So live up to your name and get over it.”

“Wow, what a bitch,” Stella muttered loud enough for everyone to hear.

The woman with the telegram spun on her heel and glared at Stella. “And who, may I ask, are you?”

Stella took a breath to say something no doubt offensive, but I jumped in before she could stir the pot anymore. “This is Miss Starling, my assistant. And my name is Buck. Buck Baxter. Private Detective.”

“Serafina Somerset,” the woman introduced herself, apparently with no need—or wish—for a handshake. “Without me none of us would be standing here right now. I’m the show’s investor. I’ve plunged a small fortune into this play.”

“Opera,” Barnabas corrected.

“I’ll call it what I like. I’m the money and don’t you forget it.”

Barnabas grumbled something under his breath. I was beginning to wonder who was gonna win the biggest asshole award in this place, with Barnabas Blake and Serafina Somerset clear front runners at this stage. Then in barreled the last of our suspects.

“Sorry I’m late! I’m always late. I know, I know, I was supposed to be here half an hour ago. But hey, I’m the leading man. It’s not like you can start rehearsals without me.”

Like a handsome steed on show, a tall man with black, slicked-back hair and a chiseled jaw leapt up onto the stage. I glanced around at the reactions to his arrival, all of them varied. Olivia Overton sighed adoringly. Barnabas crossed his arms and drummed his fingers against his forearms. Stanley looked down, obviously intimidated, and drew invisible circles on the floorboards with the toe of his worn-out shoe. Raja checked his fob watch. Serafina clamped her hands on her hips and muttered, “Oh for Pete’s sake. I wonder if Signora Valentina knows a good Signore for hire.”

As the man peacocked his way toward us, smoothing his hair and tightening his tie, Raja made the final introduction. “Mr. Baxter, Miss Starling, please meet Errol Hemingway, the male lead in our show.”

Errol dived into a handshake, firm and vigorous. Yes he was handsome, there was no denying it. Piercing green eyes. A smile so bright I had to blink. It almost distracted me from the fresh lip-print on his shirt. “Pleased to meet you,” he said. “Are you the guy who’s gonna be my new understudy?”

“No,” I said, reclaiming my hand before he shook it clean off. “I’m the guy who’s gonna find out who attacked Miss Darlington last night.”

Errol gasped, his shocked expression more than just a little exaggerated. “Someone attacked Dominique? Is she alright?”

“Oh please,” Stella groaned. “You call yourself an actor?”

“Actually,” Barnabas said, “He’s more of an opera singer than an actor. Voice of an angel. Acting skills of a mule.”

“Hey, you wanna take that backstage?” Errol started rolling up his sleeves.

Barnabas just rolled his eyes. “No, not particularly.”

Errol didn’t quite know where to go from there, seemingly disarmed by his director’s lack of interest in a fight. He rolled his sleeves back down and turned to me with a change of subject. “If you think I had anything to do with Miss Darlington’s disappearance—”

“We’ll be talkin to everyone,” I stopped him point blank. “Individually. In the meantime, with Mr. Khan’s permission of course, we’d like to stay for rehearsal. Take a look around the theatre. Then ask you all a few questions.”

“Of course,” Raja answered before any of his associates could respond. “Please enjoy the rehearsal. Miss Overton will be singing the lead role of Sahla the Snake Charmer’s Slave.”

Olivia’s eyes lit up.

“Until Signora Valentina arrives,” Serafina added curtly.

Olivia’s demure look returned.

“We’ll enjoy watching,” I said. “Everything… and everyone.”

Character Interview with Harlan & Nathan from Roses in the Devil’s Garden by Charlie Cochet + Giveaway!

RoseBlogTourBanner

Hello all! A big thank you to The Blogger Girls for having me and the fellas over today, and thank you to everyone who’s followed along on the blog tour celebrating the release of a A Rose by Any Other Name, my new M/M roaring twenties romance.

Today I’m here with Bureau agents Harlan Mackay and Nathan Reilly, the heroes of Roses in the Devil’s Garden. The fellas have been kind enough to pop in for a chat regarding Julius, Edward, and their latest appearance in A Rose by Any Other Name.

blogger_bee_trans

Charlie: Hi fellas. Thank you so much for being here.

Nathan’s looking like his cheerful self while Harlan is…. Well, it’s tough to know whether he’s actually displeased to be here or if he’s just being his naturally grumpy self.

Harlan: You didn’t really give us a choice. What with Julius and College-boy sipping champagne aboard the Majestic on their way to Europe. They get to take a trip on a luxury ocean liner and we get stuck rounding up a bunch of no good thugs. Thanks for that.

Charlie: That’s kind of your job. You know, being tough-guy bureau agents and all.

Harlan glares at me. Not a good sign. Luckily, Nathan is here to sooth his grumpy-bear lover.

Nathan: Easy there, Mackay. What would you do on one of them fancy boats anyway? You hate that sort of thing. Plus, boats make you seasick.

Harlan goes pale just at the mention of it. Nathan gives his knee a pat and smiles lovingly at him. The color returns to Harlan’s face and he even returns his partner’s smile before he remembers where he is. It’s back to grumpy-bear mode.

Charlie: addressing Harlan. When you first met Julius, he was trying to work you over for money, yet you warned him about the raid and let him and his friends leave the speakeasy before you raided it. You went to him after your troubles with Nate. He helped you through that, and you two have been close since. When he needs help, you come through for him. You have a soft spot for Julius. Why is that?

Nathan: arches an eyebrow at Harlan, though there’s amusement in his eyes. Yes, Harley. Why is that?

Harlan: shifts uncomfortably and looks embarrassed. I don’t know. He’s a swell fella with a good heart. He’s had it rough. What he’s been through? A lot of mugs I know wouldn’t have survived that kind of life, much less kept pushing on like he has, always striving for something better. The world’s dealt him a crummy hand. There’s just something about him that makes you wanna see him happy.

Nathan: smiles warmly at Harlan. You’re such a big softie.

Harlan: grumbles, his cheeks slightly flushed. Shut up.

Nathan: Harley ain’t wrong. The kid’s got this way about him. Can wrap these fellas around his dainty little finger like no one’s business. But he’s a good kid. I’m glad he’s found himself a man who loves him for who he is, despite his past. Nathan’s hand discreetly goes to Harlan’s on the couch and he gives it a squeeze. All of Harlan’s tension seems to melt away. Edward’s a real swell fella.

Harlan lets out a snort.

Charlie: You and Edward don’t exactly see eye to eye.

Harlan: The mug’s a jackass.

Charlie: smiles sweetly. Julius doesn’t seem to think so.

Harlan: Yeah, well, that’s what happens when you go all goofy over some high society dope. You lose your marbles. Even is name is pompous. Edward Joseph Clarence Jr.

Nathan: rolls his eyes. Those two are like a couple of school boys. Don’t know why they can’t get along. Edward might have lots of bank, but he ain’t like all those other flat tires who only wanted one thing from Julius. Edward’s done right by him. He’s also got his own demons like the rest of us, and for all his fancy ways, Edward’s fought tooth and nail to come through the other side. He ain’t one to let another man fight his fights for him. I respect that. Gives me a wicked grin. Plus he drives Harley off his nut which is always a hoot to watch.

Harlan: Thanks.

Nathan: Anytime, baby.

Charlie: Thank you both for popping by. What are you up to next?

Harlan: stands up, looming and imposing. A lawman’s job is never-ending. Someone’s gotta show Hoover’s college boys how it’s done.

Nathan: pats Harlan’s bicep. Yeah, all right there, cowboy. Maybe after you finish mending the broken shelf in the kitchen.

Harlan: whines Damn it, Nate. Again? I just fixed the damned thing last week.

Nathan: talking as they walk out. I told you it’s got be able to hold that breadbox.

Harlan: A breadbox that holds bread, Nate. You gotta stop hiding guns all over the damn place. One of these days I’m gonna go looking for a pair of socks and shoot my toes off.

Nathan: That’s what safeties are for, sweetheart.

GRL Blog Tour: RJ Scott – Finishing Your Reading + Excerpt & Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Finishing Your Reading

by RJ Scott

Thank you to Blogger Girls for hosting me today!

Getting to Chicago involves a 10 hour flight. Ten hours of sitting in the same place *boring*. I can’t sleep on planes, and there is a long gap to be filled between meals! I try reading, and I even had the cool thought I could write, but it just didn’t happen.

One thing that helped was the films on the small video player. Lots to choose from and at last I could start watching films that were on my *can I be bothered* list, and then stop them ten minutes in if I didn’t like them. Silver Linings Playbook was one of those films. It also meant I could re-watch films and fast forward them to the good bits. All the Chris Evans parts in Captain America, all the Chris Evans parts in Avengers Assemble (are you sensing a theme here?).

One thing I can’t bear to do is to give up on books. I think that if I am drawn to start a book, then I owe it to the author to finish it. Some books throw you into a story and you are gripped from page one, others are a slower burn. Some start with an established couple, some have the heroes not meeting until a third of the way in. Some are insta-love, some have love not even being mentioned until the last chapter. I want to give the author a chance to pull me in and I love the moment where the hook grabs me and hauls me in. I have only DNF’d (Did Not Finish) a handful of books.

Do you do that with books? How long do you give a book before it becomes a DNF. Do you give up on a books? Or, on the other hand do you have books you revisit and you know exactly where your favorite scenes are?

An Excerpt from A Reason To Stay

He scooted up so he was sitting on the pillows and watched, amused at the fact that the husband and wife team he had joined in with last night were getting hot and heavy right in front of him. She held out her hand, Anna or something. Viktor waved her away, and dismissing the need for a shower, he dressed and left the room.

“See you around, soldier!” the husband, Mark, shouted after him as he left the suburban middle-class home in Suffolk, Virginia.

“Sailor,” Viktor muttered. Then he pulled the front door shut and climbed into his Tahoe. The couple hadn’t been all that bright, but the husband was built just right for Viktor to get a hold of. Clearly they didn’t understand Viktor’s explanation of who he was when he was attempting to get the three-way. Typical.

He dialed his sister’s phone, and she picked up almost immediately.

“Viktor,” she stammered. Instantly Viktor was on high alert. He forced aside all possible worries and simply listened. “Ben had an accident, he’s in the hospital.”

“What happened? A car?”

“No. He was out on the mountain, found this morning. He’s unconscious, and he has a broken ankle, hypothermia, and a head injury.” She caught a sob. “What do I do? Why would he be out there?”

Viktor turned the key in the ignition and said nothing. On the mountain? That didn’t make sense.

“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” he said firmly. “Call me if anything changes.”

He didn’t want details. He just needed to get there.

Honorary Blogger Bryan Keating: Paused Individuals Ready to Move Forward + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Paused Individuals Ready to Move Forward

by Bryan Keating

Hello!! First, I would like to say thank you to the generous Blogger Girls for taking a chance on a young, first-time writer and letting me spread the good word about my passion, my writing, and letting me introduce my novel Paused on their popular website.

I’m so fascinated by the newest community I’ve recently been introduced to: the M4M Reading Community. Honestly, I thought being thrown into the LGBTQ community at a young age was hard to grasp, boy, was I ever wrong! While writing my first novel, Paused, I was gladly letting loose on some sex scenes within my book, a bathhouse scene in particular has blessed me with many blushes from some readers not familiar with the genre. The community, however, wow! Upon reading some of your work, I was shocked! I was like, damn, my next one I can really go all out! The readers who have reached out to me have inspired me to continue to writing and be very upfront and honest in future erotic scenes.

I would like to personally invite all of you to read Paused, as it is my precious child in my young life. The story is based on true events. The characters are my friends and frenemies. The book is now my way of life. As a writer and artist, it is my goal for the world to see my work and it be archived in the record books. I wish to have you take a wild ride from your life into my world. Engulf your mind in insanity, addiction, sex and love.

I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you with your comments, suggestions, and support. Together, it is our duty to really embrace the M4M novels and raise them into mainstream awareness.

About Bryan Keating

Bryan Keating, or alternately and more commonly known as Mickey Drake, is a 24 year old self-published author and Chicago native. After being relatively sheltered for most of his youth, Bryan eventually would go onto attending Columbia College Chicago where he would gain the professional skills for writing to match with his unique talent. Throughout his college experience and finally being fully introduced to the LGBTQ community, he began writing about his adventures, perils, and loves which continue to inspire his writing today. Thus he created and wrote Paused, a novel based on true events.

Bryan’s passion for writing tales within his community, the LGBTQ community, stems from his sudden release into the gay community and love without much prior knowledge. He was, as the new world around him: reckless, ruthless, and inviting. Through Paused, Bryan hopes to make an example of his experiences through his character’s stories. Whether that example is to be feared, confused, erotic, or enthralled is entirely up to the individual reader.

Bryan now lives in Los Angeles, California where he continues to write each day. He is still inspired by those he meets along his journey in life and is drafting the sequel to Paused, expected to be released next year (2015).

Honorary Blogger Melissa Collins: My First M/M Experience + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

My First M/M Experience

by Melissa Collins

Since publishing Let Love Live, many readers have asked me how I felt about the process seeing as it was my first M/m novel. The previous five titles in my series are all M/f and up until about a year ago, I had primarily read M/F novels. This wasn’t because I had anything against M/m romances. Sadly, I just didn’t know the existed.

So, how does someone who’s only read and written M/f novels make the transition to gay romance? It was actually a fairly easy one. Dylan and Shane were characters who were already in my previous books so I already knew their back story. For me, they fell in love like and man and woman would. I mean, love is love, right? For that reason alone, I didn’t treat it any differently than I would have. They learn about each other’s feelings, test the waters of their physical attraction, say or do the wrong things at times, and learn how to make up. For those of you who have already read Let Love Live, you know why Dylan and Shane can’t be together. And, for those of you who haven’t, a word of advice: get tissues.

Part two of the novel focuses on Dylan eight years after part one ends. For this part, I was a little nervous because I had to bring in a new character – new to my series and new to Dylan. But again, I wanted to treat it like any other romance. I didn’t want there to be stereotypes or make it feel like I was a woman writing what I think men would say or do. So in Dylan and Conner, I created two very assertive and confident men – a counselor and an ex-MMA fighter.

Now, I did do a lot of internet “research” for certain sexy scenes, but I won’t complain about that one bit. I had so much fun writing Let Love Live and I honestly feel like it was a very successful novel, let alone my first M/m novel. You can definitely count on more coming from me in the future.

About Let Love Live

Let Love Live (Love, #5)Who would you become if you lost the only person who ever mattered?

For twenty-six year old Dylan Hopkins, the answer is easy.  He’s become no one. Memories of the happier times are all he has left as he finds himself meandering numbly through his now dull life. Though he cares about his work and family dearly, he’s yet to let himself find love again. Afraid of letting go of what he once had, Dylan chooses to keep his heart buried, where it belongs, having died a long time ago.

Conner Michelson is about to change everything Dylan knows. He’s every bit the bad boy persona – tatted up, ex-MMA fighter, but after an injury leaves him unable to fight, he has to rethink his goals. Having just opened his own gym, Conner can cross his first major life accomplishment off his very short list. Next up: find a man he can settle down with and build a family. Seems simple enough – a dream most people have, but when he meets Dylan, his carefree, easy-going life is thrown into a tailspin.

Determined to keep Dylan in his life, Conner vows to resurrect Dylan’s long ago buried heart and let love live once more.

About Melissa Collins

New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Melissa Collins has always been a book worm.  Studying Literature in college ensured that her nose was always stuck in a book.  She followed her passion for reading to the most logical career choice: English teacher.  Her hope was to share her passion for reading and the escapism of books to her students.  Having spent more than a decade in front of a classroom, she can easily say that it’s been a dream.

Her passion for writing didn’t start until more recently.  When she was home on maternity leave in early 2012, she read her first romance novel and her head filled with the passion, angst and laughter of the characters who she read about it.  It wasn’t long before characters of her own took shape in her mind. Their lives took over Melissa’s brain and The Love Series was born.

Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh: Excerpt + Giveaway!

RA Blog Tour

An Excerpt from Rock Addiction

Fox hadn’t become the lead singer of one of the best-selling rock bands in history by being a shrinking violet. No, he went after what he wanted, no holds barred. And the raw promise he could feel between him and Molly? He had to know where it would lead, the need so strong he hadn’t felt anything like it since the day he’d figured out that music was his escape, the air in his lungs.

Which was why he was leaning against the wall beside Molly’s apartment at five that afternoon, a guitar by his side.

The elevator doors opened at a quarter after the hour, Molly going motionless two steps outside of it, the doors closing silently at her back. Yeah, she hadn’t expected him, but Fox was ready to work with that. Waiting patiently as she took a deep breath and completed the trek down the corridor, he drew in the scent of her, his gaze lingering on the fluttering pulse in her neck.

“How did you get past security?”

Fox smiled slowly at the blurted-out question, wondering if Molly knew how bad she was at hiding her emotions. He liked it, liked that he saw the real Molly, not an illusion she’d created to tempt him—not that she had to do anything but smile to tempt him. “I told you the security sucks.”

Unable to resist, he reached out to run his finger down one creamy cheek flushed with a mix of surprise, passion, and, he was certain, sweet, hot feminine anger. His guess was borne out when Molly unlocked her door with jittery hands and put down her handbag on one corner of the bench, her fingers trembling before she curled them into her palms. “You’re breaking the rules.”

“What rules?” Closing the door, he leaned back on it and willed her to face him. Much as he loved the shape of her from the back, he liked watching those expressive eyes whisper her mood to him.

Shoulders tight, she turned. “This was supposed to be a one-night stand.”

“Ah.” Folding his arms over the plain black of his T-shirt, he said, “How about a one-month stand instead?” He knew he had to play this exactly right. Molly was wary of him, and yeah, he could understand why. To have her in his life beyond a fleeting instant, he’d have to win her trust.

She jerked up her head. “What?”

“Why not? I like you. You like me.” He smiled—because the reason Molly had needed to jerk up her head was that she’d been staring at his chest. “Admit it.”

Sitting down on the bench, she began to unzip her boots, very obviously not looking at him. “You’re okay for a rock star.”

He wanted to bite her, then pet her until she was limp and languid in his arms. “We burn up together.” Deliberately modulating his voice—his instrument—for maximum effect, low and bedroom rough, he saw her fingers stutter on the zipper. “I’m here for a month. It’s an easy equation.”

When the words “Let me think about it” fell from her mouth, he thought she might’ve been as startled as he was, her lips parting on a slight gasp—as if to call back the declaration.

GRL Blog Tour: Devon Rhodes – Always Looking Ahead + Giveaway!

GRL 2014 Blog Tour Banner

Always Looking Ahead

by Devon Rhodes

Thanks to The Blogger Girls for having me on today to talk about one of my favorite topics—the GayRomLit Retreat! ☺

It occurred to me this summer that while most authors going to GRL were still considering what to order or bring or buy or pack for this year’s GRL in Chicago, I might be one of few already putting plans in motion for 2015’s GRL…wherever it might be! Let me explain.

UnconventionalWomen_GRL_ABQI’ve been to all of the GRLs so far, and really don’t see myself ever NOT going. I love GayRomLit. I remember even before the first one in New Orleans when Carol and Ethan first conceived of the idea, and that was the first conference or meeting of any sort that I ever went to after becoming a writer. So it will always have a special place in my heart.

It was also a place where I met so many people that I now consider to be personal friends, including people I now collaborate on projects with and write with, including Carol Lynne, Amber Kell, Stephani Hecht, Jambrea Jo Jones and of course, my co-author of many books since, TA Chase. And yes—it still makes me fangurl sometimes thinking that I’ve actually worked with all these women!

I was shortly after that first GayRomLit that I had a dream. Literally. I dreamt that I’d been in an anthology with a lot of the great authors I’d gotten to know in person at GRL. So the next morning, I posted on FB to a few of the authors I’d dreamed of about how I’d had this dream, and wouldn’t it be fun to make it a reality?

Well, that got things going, and since we’re all published at Totally Bound, I approached them with the concept. They were as excited as we were about it, and let us have a great deal of control over the concept, making sure we had a release date before the following year’s GRL in Albuquerque.

T.A. Chase & Devon Rhodes
All of the authors I asked said yes right away, even though I know most of them had a ton of other projects going on, and many don’t write short stories very often. And I just love how they all let their own unique style and creativity come out to play. Other than the fact that we all write MM and wanted a general, central theme of conventions, we all sort of went to our strengths as far as subgenres and heat levels with that first anthology. That was Unconventional At Best.

We really loved the result, so after we got some good feedback after GRL Albuquerque, we sat there having lunch in a Hard Rock restaurant the day GRL ended and starting throwing ideas around for an anth for the following year in Atlanta. For that year, we thought it would be fun to write romances set in the conference hotel. Since Carol had been there, she helped us with details, and we wrote stories about fictional attendees and hotel employees finding love, and shared our characters in each other’s books. Unconventional in Atlanta was a lot of fun for us and thankfully our readers enjoyed it as well! ☺

GRL Atlanta wasn’t even over when we started talking about the next year’s anthology. We came up with a slightly darker turn, setting it in an alternate reality where mobs and gangs ruled Chicago in modern times. Carol unfortunately had to bow out for the third anthology—such a busy woman!—but the other five of us came up with a chronological series of stories following a group of men trying to save their city in An Unconventional Chicago.

So here we are, a month away from GRL Chicago…and we’re already looking ahead to GRL 2015 and planning yet another Unconventional anthology. We’re going to go paranormal for this next one and two of the authors have already started their stories! We have a concept that we think will work wherever the announced location is, so no reason not to get a jump start! ☺

I’m just so honored to be working with these fabulous women, and I really can’t wait to see everyone next month. To kick off the celebration early, I’d love to give ebook copies of all three Unconventional anthologies away to one lucky winner!  Just follow The Blogger Girls’ instructions to enter, and good luck! ☺

❤ Devon

About An Unconventional Chicago Anthology

An Unconventional ChicagoNo Bravery by T.A. Chase

A man looking for revenge discovers a man who wants to save a city.

Farris O’Laughlin has been back in Chicago for five years. He’d spent thirteen years before his return in a mental asylum after his brother had him committed for ‘insanity’. Farris plots revenge in the way he knows will hurt his brother the most—bringing down the family business.

Darien Shaunessy is Farris’ new driver and guard. He’s around to keep Farris in line…or so Farris’ brother thinks. Darien has his own reasons for working for the O’Laughlins, but Farris wasn’t part of his plan.

When two men from different parts of the city come together, powerful men could lose their wealth and control. And the lovers could find bravery they never thought they possessed.

Love Don’t Die by Jambrea Jo Jones

They might die, but their love never will…

Moran Schultz was tasked with getting information from one ward to another. He was all for helping his brother make Chicago a better place. What he wasn’t expecting was his lover to show up after a month of no contact.

Dutch Luciano isn’t going to let Moran go without a fight. They love each other and the gangs in charge of Chicago aren’t going to keep them apart.

Can Moran let Dutch back in or is it too dangerous? More than Chicago is on the line. Will love be strong enough to survive?

Passion Under Fire by Stephani Hecht

Can their love overcome the danger coming their way, or are they doomed to die?

Georgio is the third son in a powerful mob family, but he has never agreed with their violent or illegal ways, so he joins the resistance in an attempt to right the wrongs that his family has done. But, by doing so, he puts himself at great risk of getting caught. And if he is, his older brothers would have no problem ordering him executed, their sibling or not.

Tito is a runner for the family. While he hates the gang, he has a sick brother at home to take care of, so he has to take the job because it pays so well. The last thing Tito expects is to form an attachment to Georgio.

While Georgio tries to deny his feelings for Tito, he finds himself drawn to him as well. But, if they were to be caught together, they could be killed on the spot. Will their love be able to survive so many obstacles? Or can they find a way to happiness?

Ganging Up on Love by Amber Kell

New love can bring new dangers.

When Dirk volunteered to take the information to the resistance, he didn’t know he’d find his perfect match in their leader. Determined to find a place among them, he offers to help wherever he can.

Leon has always been alone, afraid of trusting anyone with his affection. When the visitor from Ward Three comes in with important information to bring down the mob bosses, he doesn’t know how to handle their instant attraction.

When outside dangers threaten to tear them apart, will their new love be enough to keep them together?

Bonfire Heart by Devon Rhodes

Sometimes fires burn and destroy, but from the ashes, new growth can heal and cleanse.

Thierry Alexander is the deputy mayor of Chicago, a city he loves but can’t save on his own from the corrupt political system. His assistant and lover, Eduardo, is also known as Cesar, the head of the underground resistance movement. He has been working behind the scenes for years and finally gets what he needs—enough information to get the US government involved and take down the criminal elements strangling the city he loves.

But they need to act fast because legislation is about to be enacted that will give rise to social and ethnic purging in Chicago. Not knowing who they can trust, they will have to put their faith in one another and risk everything to save a city.

An Unconventional Chicago is available at Totally Bound, Amazon, ARe and B&N.

A Life In Frames

by Lillian McKinnon

Blurb: Bike rides, days at the pool, karate class…the more some things stay the same, the more they also change. Now, there’s boys. My best friend Amy pointed out that everyone  but us has seems to have a boyfriend and, sure enough, even my awkward older brother has someone he’s crushing on.

There is suddenly more to going to the pool, to dances and parties, and even just hanging out. We try to impress each other and maybe find our match. I capture all our moments with my camera, always observing and documenting it all for posterity. Will Amy find some fashion sense? Will I find someone who will want to be mine? And my brother, Aeric, who just came out as gay, will he be okay? Life suddenly seems so complicated.

But changes, well, some of them aren’t so bad.

A Life In Frames is coming soon in early October 2014!

Honorary Blogger Angelique Voisen: On Cross-Genres and Writing Erotic Romances + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

On Cross-Genres and Writing Erotic Romances

by Angelique Voisen

Firstly, I’d like to thank The Blogger Girls for giving me the opportunity to do a guest post. Today, I’d like to talk about writing cross-genres and my recent release, Taming Icarus.

One of my close friends asked me recently why I’ve shifted my focus from writing dark fiction to writing smut, a.k.a erotic romance. My answer was pretty simple- writing erotic romances gives me the freedom to experiment with sub-genres, a freedom I won’t be able to do elsewhere. Also, putting aside some time at the end of the day to write romantic stories with happy endings is a relaxing experience after a stressful day at work.

They make me happy, like sugar-free donuts (I’m a type-2 diabetic).

Here’s a little interesting bit about myself. I’m from Singapore and I grew up with a strict Catholic upbringing. This is probably why I get a sadistic kick telling people I write erotic romance in my free time. Sadly, I’ve given up long ago trying to explain what’s the difference between erotic romance and erotica.

My background also explains why I can’t stick to a particular genre or specialize in one. After I’ve published my first erotic romance, Taming Icarus (The Spectrum, #1), in June, I’ve since experimented with a number of LGBTQ pairings and sub-genres, including erotic sci-fi and steampunk romance.

I’m still getting a hang of my new surroundings and I admit my writing isn’t as refined as I’d like it to be, but I’m not discouraged by rejections or negative reviews. I’ll keep on writing as long as there are people willing to read my work. Jumping from writing dark fiction to erotic romance has been a constant eye-opener, but some of the same rules still apply.

Researching the market and knowing the genre is a given must, at the same time, I occasionally need to remind myself why I started writing erotic romances in the first place. Simply because I enjoy writing and sharing my stories.

blogger_bee_trans

About Taming Icarus

iIn the alternative world of New Furor, there are the rubes and the Spectrum Wielders, gifted men and women capable of wielding great magic with jewels. Chris Skinner, Icarus, unfortunately belongs to a Spectrum class born and bred for service. She also belongs to an abusive Spectrum Wielder who would do anything to avenge her dead sister, even if it destroys Chris and herself in the process.

Chris’s owner leaves a reckless trail of vengeance, triggering a confrontation with two of the city’s powerful enforcers. Gus Terrel and Iris Donovan are unlike any Spectrum Wielders Chris has ever met. They only have one interest, and it’s not taking Chris’s owner into custody. They want Chris badly, but Chris mistrusts their intentions. Why anyone would want second-hand property is beyond her.

Acquiring their third is harder than Gus and Iris ever imagined, but they would do whatever it takes to make Chris exclusively theirs…no matter the cost.

Honorary Blogger J.C. Mells: Part-time M/M Romance Writer, Full-time Fag-Hag + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Part-time M/M Romance Writer, Full-time Fag-Hag

I think I may have thrown some of the fans of my Pierced Series (Paranormal Romance Series) for a loop when the fifth book, Napoleon – a standalone novella – was an M/M Romance.

Surprise!

None of my other books are M/M Romances, I don’t consider myself an M/M Romance writer, (although I may write a part 2 to Napoleon due to popular request), and I don’t even read that much M/M Romance (for me, someone with a five-book-a-week-habit, that means I binge-read three or four in a row every couple of months, which might be more than some, I suppose).

So, why did I write Napoleon?

Of course, one of the main reasons is that Napoleon Charming was a stand-out, popular character from my series.  I wanted to give him his own story – and he’s gay – so it shouldn’t have been the surprise it was to some of my fans that he was going to fall in love… with another guy.

The second reason is that I may not read M/M Romance on a regular basis – but I feel like I sure do live it most of the time!  They always say to write what you know!

I have a “thing” about me – some may say an aura – that appears to attract gay men in my direction.  I’ve had this “thing” since I was about fifteen/sixteen.  Whatever it is, gay men flock to me as if I were an ice-cold, frothy, margarita at the Nine Inch Males Tavern at happy hour.

My best friend of twenty-three years is gay, my former roommate of ten years is gay, I was married to a gay man for three years (that’s another story for another day!) – and to top it all off, when I moved away from my entirely gay and lesbian social circle in New York and moved to Las Vegas, within thirty minutes of arriving in Sin City, the very gay property manager at the community I was moving into invited me out to a gay bar called Charlie’s that night. Please note that I am a straight female and made no mention of the fact I had a gay social circle back in NY, and when I later asked Jack why he’d invited me out, his response was that I had that fag-hag vibe.  Needless to say, I did go to Charlie’s with Jack that night, had a few too many happy hour cocktails, while watching all denominations of gay men from Latino homeboys, to bears, to twinks to good ole country boys to manly men to flaming queens ALL line-dancing (yes, I said LINE-DANCING) to Donna Summer songs on the dance floor.  I’d love to tell you how I ended up doing the Can-Can with a line of drag queens – but then I’d have to kill you.

But I digress…

Cut to almost ten years later and the cute, skinny-jeaned Columbian that Jack picked up that night and ended up falling in love with (they moved in together soon afterwards and were together for nine years) was recently caught cheating.  The drama that ensued is worthy of a day time soap.  So why not read more M/M Romances?  I LIVE IN ONE!

I may not specialize in M/M Romances, but I feel I have several of the credentials necessary to write one (at least I HOPE I do!).  My mom, who has never read an M/M Romance in her life, read Napoleon and upon finishing it, turned to me and said, “It’s surprisingly good.  It’s just like when a boy falls in love with a girl.”

Yep.  I sighed, rolled my eyes at her and slapped myself in the head.

I may not be a full-time M/M Romance author, but I am a full-time fag-hag and ALL my books are gay-friendly.  Six books in and I’ve yet to write one that didn’t have a gay or bisexual character that didn’t steal the show (lesbian and trans to come in future books, I’m sure).

Then I thought, for all the Pierced Series fans who refused to try Napoleon due to its subject matter (and I can tell from sales there were a few), if even one first-timer had the same, positive, reaction as my 84-year-old mother, then I’m VERY glad I wrote it.

About Napoleon

3This is a standalone novella. You do not have to have read other books in the series to enjoy it.

Napoleon Charming-Balak has been crushing on the “exchange student” that’s been staying with him for the last six months. The object of his crush: Sixten Dahl, a straight boy that seems to get his kicks from flirting with, then torturing, Napoleon in the cruelest of ways. Is it any wonder Nap, and his best friend Moused, are high-tailing it to New York City as fast as they possibly can? If there’s one thing Napoleon is hoping for, it’s that life in the Big Apple will be exactly what his self-esteem needs to get over the Swedish tease that has been tormenting him all summer long.

If he could only stop thinking about Sixten long enough to enjoy it.
