Exclusive Excerpt from By Way of Pain

by J.M. Dabney

A deadly calm seemed to come over my captor as the leather slithered through the man’s slim, elegant hands that were encased in tight black leather. “Remove the blanket, stand and return to the support in the center of the room.”

Every inch of my body shook as I did as he asked. The chill in the air had goosebumps rising and caused the hair to stand up on my arms. When I straightened, I used my hands to cover my crotch. Each step I took fought against my instinct to survive. He said he’d do away with me, and if he felt merciful, he’d make my death quick. As much as that should have terrified me, it brought me a sense of comfort that once he was done with me, he wouldn’t make me suffer.

I yelped and covered my eyes as the single, naked bulb burned bright.

“Face the support and grab the hook. Do not remove your hands from it at any time or you will earn an extra lash.”

My captor’s voice turned deeper, almost what I assumed a lover would sound like.

“What are you going to do with me?”

“I’m going to teach you, boy, that pain is pleasure. When I’m done, you will beg for each lash you receive in punishment.”

I arched my back as he drew the hilt of the whip down the indent of my spine and then I felt his breath fan my ear. “You have to embrace pain to truly appreciate pleasure. For some of us, they are one and the s

ame.”

That he believed what he was saying was scarier than the inevitability of my death.

My captor pressed his clothed form fully to my back. The man was lean, but I felt the power in those muscles, and I cried out as strong fingers winched my head back. I closed my eyes at the burning sting on my scalp. The rough support abraded my skin—only the cage on my cock protected the tender skin. My big, hairy body was too on display, and I didn’t want him to look at me.

Suddenly the heat and presence of him was gone, and the chilliness of the damp basement washed over me. I didn’t dare turn around. I didn’t want to see what was about to happen. I knew that was stupid. He was going to whip me and seeing would allow me to brace myself for the pain.

“Breathe, boy. I own every inch of you, and that includes your pain.”

As soon as the last syllable slipped from his tongue, I felt the fire of the first kiss of the whip. Strangely, I flinched more at the crack of the leather than I did the first strike. I moved to wrap my arms around the support, hugging it tight and pressing my sweaty brow to the splintered surface. Each strike of the whip made me writhe and beg. I wanted the pain to stop. I felt the first trickles of blood down my back. It was a tickling sensation as it flowed over my ass—the backs of my thighs.

It wasn’t as much as I’d assumed, as if just the tip of the whip grazed my back. The agony reached the point that a sort of numbness took over. The nerves had deadened under the exposure of overwhelming suffering. My vision was dimming at the edges, and my heart beat too fast, I cried out with each new lick of leather. I was posed on my tiptoes, and my thighs shook, I was on the edge of collapse.

I was granted a reprieve, and I screamed as his soft shirt felt like sandpaper on my abused back. “Good boy, you did better than I expected.” His voice sounded almost…caring, and that was so unlike the mental picture I’d formed of him. I gritted my teeth as he drew his palm from my shoulder

to hip. I was oversensitive and shoved myself harder into the beam.

“Easy, boy, you did so good. I’ve never seen someone so beautiful in the throes of their pain.” Continue reading

Third Time’s the Charm by K. Evan Coles: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Third Time’s the Charm

by K. Evan Coles

Finn was mixing a honey Dijon dressing when his phone chimed on the counter. “That’s probably Mick,” he said. He wiped his hands and declined the call, then punched in the code that unlocked the Primus Avenue gate. “Luke’s dropping Ella off at a friend’s first, so I don’t expect him before six-thirty.”

“Finn, it’s six forty-five.”

Finn went still. “What? How the hell did that happen?” he wondered as his buzzer went off. He headed for the door.

Paul tsked. “You should have slept more. You’ll be dead to the world by dessert if not earlier!”

Sure enough, Finn found Mick and Luke chatting on his doorstep as if they’d become good pals between the gate and Finn’s building. Then Luke looked at Finn, and the way his face lit up sent a dizzy rush through Finn’s whole body.

He waved them in with a grin. “Hey, guys.”

“Hey, Finn.” Mick leaned in for a quick hug and inclined his head toward Luke. “I met this guy outside and glommed on to him.”

“Mick was walking in front of me on Charles Street,” Luke said. “He stopped at the gate and I figured he must be either a friend of yours or an unbelievably friendly mugger.” He held up a white paper bag while the others laughed. “I brought dessert, as requested, in the form of Key Lime Pie Bars.”

“Oh, God, those sound good,” Mick crooned. He held his hands out for the bag. “I’ll take those and go pour us some wine, shall I?”

“You should say hello to your husband while you’re at it!” Paul shouted from the kitchen. Finn clamped his lips together over a laugh as Mick cringed.

“Yes, love, hello!” Mick called back. He managed an epic eye-roll before striding off with the bag and leaving Finn and Luke behind.

“I should warn you that they’re like that all the time,” Finn said. “It’s ninety-nine percent play-acting, though, so don’t take anything seriously.”

“Thanks for the heads-up.” Luke met Finn’s gaze and smiled. “Hey, Doc.”

“Hey.” Finn’s chest seemed to swell as he wrapped Luke up in a hug and closed the remaining distance between them with a kiss. He meant to steal just one, but one became several and soon he had Luke up against the front door and both of them were laughing. Luke brought his hands up to Finn’s face and kissed him so desire zigged up Finn’s spine and turned his knees jelly.

He pressed his forehead to Luke’s with a hum. “Thanks for coming over.”

“Thanks for having me.” Luke tilted his head back, and his forehead puckered when Finn opened his eyes again. “You okay?”

Finn opened his mouth to brush the question off but went silent when Luke gently brushed his thumb under Finn’s eye, no doubt tracing the dark smudge of sleeplessness. His touch made Finn sigh.

“I slept for shit last night. I worked a tough shift and never settled. It happens,” he said at Luke’s frown. “You’d think I’d be used to awful shifts by now, right? It’s okay, though. You’re here and we’ll have wine and dinner, not to mention one of my favorite desserts, and all those things will make me feel better.”

“Okay.” Luke dropped another kiss against Finn’s lips. “You let me know how I can help. You can thank Gillian for the dessert recipe, by the way. She passed it on to me along with some secrets for juicing key limes.” He grimaced. “Those little suckers are a bitch to wrangle when you’ve got big hands like mine.”

Finn grinned so wide his face hurt. “I can’t believe you baked for this. Wait ’til Paul hears.”

“Paul already knows because he heard every word you said.” The man himself appeared at the end of the hallway, his eyes sparkling with amusement. “This apartment’s not very big, Finn, and the bricks and hardwood floors make for some truly fantastic acoustics. So how about you stop macking on your boy and introduce me? Mick’s in here about to eat all your bacon, by the way, so the sooner you two get your asses moving, the better.”

Exclusive Excerpt from Strike a Chord

by K.M. Neuhold

He scoots to the edge of the bed to get up, and I notice the new tattoo taking up his entire back again, and this time I’m close enough to get a good look at it. It’s bright red and looks like flowers. The possible meaning of it hits me in the chest, and I sit up to get a better look.

“Are these hibiscus flowers?”

He turns his head and gives me a shy smile over his shoulder. “Yes.”

“Benji, I—”

He cuts me off with a kiss. “Our lives are a mess, ‘Ris; let’s not make it more complicated.”

“Right,” I agree.

As he walks out of the room, I feel a mixture of relief that I’m not alone in feeling more than I should and disappointed. I know he’s right; everything with his band is still up in the air. Neither of us know where we’ll live or what career we’ll have in six months; it’s the completely wrong time to start something more. But maybe one day…

Release Blitz: The Bringer of Wrath by A.E. Via + Giveaway!

The Bringer of Wrath by A.E. Via

Shifter and Vampire True Mates story.

Alek’s older brother, Justice—the Alpha Zenith—was the first shifter to mate with a vampire in many generations, and it was believed the rare, fated pairing would stop at him. But, it hadn’t. Aleksei ‘Alek’ Volkov was second beta, next in succession to the most powerful shifter in the world. He was proud of his title and he took his duties seriously. It was all he had. Until his true mate literally showed up on his doorstep.

While his brother—the overachiever—excelled at having a vampire as a mate, Alek wasn’t that optimistic he would. He wasn’t averse to love, and he’d often thought of how different his life could’ve turned out if he’d ever experienced the emotion. His life was a mess and he’d worn a mask of stability for a majority of that time, only showing his siblings and pack what they needed to see—a strong Volkov alpha. Not the damaged man he was, with a tortured soul and a rogue wolf.

Alek dropped his heavy head in his hands. Now, for some reason, I’ve been granted a true vampire mate. And not just any vampire. The intimidating Belleron Liatos. Lord High to the King and the leader of his army.

Belleron ‘Bell’ Liatos had come to the states for one reason—his best friend and Vampire King, Chadwick Bentley. He certainly didn’t come to be pounced on by a wolf that could act independently of its master. Not only was his destined cherished a complicated and confused man; but he was also unaware of the powerful presence that lurked in the shadows of his soul. Bell didn’t know he’d be the key to unlocking an exceptional triad that would play a critical role in fulfilling the prophesy.

This story DOES NOT contain or even mention MPREG.

No multiple pairings. No cliffhangers. Ends with a very HFN.

Warning: This book is M/M paranormal: If you DO NOT like alpha men shifting into large wolves, or vampires feeding from their destined beloveds, than this may not be the novel for you.

Top Shelf by Allison Temple: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Top Shelf

by Allison Temple

One of the books had flopped open when Martin dropped it, and he was momentarily distracted as the words on the page shifted. But the words weren’t moving; he was seeing several pages at once. He bent to lift the book, and the pages rolled as the spine shifted in his hands. Once again, he was struck by the sense that the book was lighter than it should be. The pages had been cut, but unlike the bird book on the table, this one had no images. Instead, small rectangular-shaped perforations dotted the lines of text so words on subsequent pages were visible. He turned the page, delicate as lace.

He flipped the cover shut. The title had been carved away, but the author’s name was left. Calvin Forrester. Martin turned through the first few pages again. The original book’s topic was nearly unintelligible with so few of the words remaining. How would Mr. Forrester feel?

“What are you doing?” Seb was standing surprisingly close.

“I was just—”

“How did you get in?”

“I was showing him my project.” Cassidy was still crouched on the floor.

“That’s not your project.” Seb’s cool eyes were on the book in Martin’s hand.

“She asked for something to weigh it down.”

“It’s not a paperweight.”

“No, I can see that,” Martin said as he bounced his hand up and down with the open book in it. The spiderwebbing of pages fluttered in the breeze. Seb’s eyes widened, and his nostrils flared.

“Stop that!” He pulled the book out of Martin’s hands. “It’s not a toy.”

Martin’s face flushed, and his insides squeezed. He hated how he couldn’t control the reaction. Who was Seb to make him feel like this?

“It’s art.” Cassidy interjected from her spot on the floor.

“Cass.”

“You cut up a book?” Martin’s frustration tried to boil over. He shouldn’t be the only one upset here. He wanted to hold the book again, really heft it. If the rest of the pages were like the ones he’d seen, only a third of the words remained.

“And what if I did?” Seb’s voice was flat.

Didn’t he understand? “Those are someone’s words.”

“Words no one was going to read. It was about agricultural best practices in New England, printed in 1977.”

“That’s not the point. It was someone’s work. You can’t deface a book like that.” Despite everything, Martin’s spine straightened. Whatever awkwardness he normally felt in Seb’s presence gave way to anger on behalf of the unknown writer’s lost words.

“What do you know about it?” Seb brushed past him, his shoulder pushing against Martin’s.

The casual dismissal made Martin’s face heat. He never seemed worthy of Seb’s time, but he was suddenly unsure Seb’s interest was something to aspire to. “What gives you the right to ruin someone’s work like that?” He thrust his chin out. This was one place where he could hold his ground. He’d made a career out of unearthing the words of lost writers.

Seb slid the book back onto the shelf where it had been. “What gives you the right to judge me for it?”

“I wrote my dissertation on—”

“Your dissertation?” Seb’s laugh was low and mean as he turned back to face Martin. One blond eyebrow arched.

“I told you he was a doctor,” Cassidy said.

“A doctor. Is that right? Doctor Martin?” He stepped forward. Despite Martin’s conviction, the accusation in Seb’s eyes forced him to take a step back.

“That’s right.”

“Like a real doctor? Or one of those fake doctors? The ones with all that useless knowledge that only qualifies them to judge the rest of us poor slobs who actually had to go out and face the real world?”

“Real” doctors. Because, those who couldn’t do taught. He’d heard all the things PhD stood for: Post hole digger, pathetic hopeless dreamer.

“I worked hard for my degree.” Years of hard work. He’d loved those years before he’d finished his doctorate, when his direction had seemed so clear. And now he was defending them to someone who didn’t even see what was wrong with cutting up a book. How had he gotten himself into this? He’d only been trying to save Cassidy from giants.

“What are you doing in my house?” Seb asked again.

“I wanted to show him my portfolio,” Cassidy said.

“Well, he’s seen it.” Seb gestured behind them without looking away from Martin. “Now you can go.”

Eight Lives by Autumn Breeze & Ashley Chamblee: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Eight Lives

by Autumn Breeze & Ashley Chamblee

“Look.” Anselm paused beside one of the many stalls set up in the open market, pointing to a necklace on one of the tables. It was a black choker with a simple small silver bell at the end of it. “I forgot your bell broke. Do you want another one?”

“I like it. It’s cute,” I said, moving closer to the stand.

Anselm moved to the display as well. He picked up the bell and paid the woman behind the stall counter before he grabbed my hand. His fingers were colder than a normal human’s hand. I’d never noticed before, but that was probably because of my fur.

The chill of his touch was comforting.

“I have an idea.” Anselm pulled me along behind him. “Let me see if I can find—there she is!”

Anselm found a woman sitting behind a small round table only a couple of stalls down from where we had purchased the choker. She had cards laid out in front of her, and I could feel the way the air around her seemed to spark.

She was a witch. I stepped behind Anselm. I really didn’t like witches; even the Med-Witch we had seen was a bit scary.

“Ma’am,” Anselm said, holding out my new choker, “could you enchant this? Something to make it the right size needed to fit around the owner’s neck. I’m willing to pay.”

“I suppose. It is a simple enchantment.” The witch took the bell from Anselm. Her hands glowed a pale yellow for a few seconds before she held out her other hand. She had finished with her enchantment but was clearly not releasing the choker until Anselm placed a crisp new bill in her palm. “It was a pleasure doing business,” she said.

Anselm spun me around and pulled the choker across my neck.

“We’re not even going to ask if she actually cursed it?” I said as Anselm snapped it in place.

“She wasn’t a dark witch,” he explained.

I reached up to touch the small bell. “Will it really still fit when I . . . go back?” I wondered. My last bell was something Anselm had given me years ago. I had cherished it until it broke, and even afterward, it was still in our home with a collection of my things. Now I had a new gift from him, one that would fit me as a cat or a man.

“I hope so,” Anselm said, flicking the bell and making it ting. “It suits you. Do you really like it?”

I smiled, looking up at him. “I love it.”

“Let’s get you some clothes,” Anselm said.

I nodded and reached out to grab his hand, lacing his fingers with mine. My heart raced as we walked. My tail swung behind us. I wished this could be our life, that maybe I could find a way to exist with Anselm as I was now, that maybe he would accept me as a man and not just a cat.

I shook that daydream away. I couldn’t afford thoughts like that.
