Honorary Blogger Piper Vaughn: Best Gifts Ever

Best Gifts Ever

by Piper Vaughn

Hi, all! Thanks to The Blogger Girls for having me today!

Over the years it’s gotten to the point where my family defaults to giving me an Amazon gift card for just about every special occasion. Not that I’m complaining—I do love Amazon and my Kindle—but it occurs to me that it’s been ages since I got a personal gift from someone that both surprised me and really fit me as an individual. Recently, as hedgehogs have become one of my obsessions over the last few years, I’ve gotten a few hedgehog themed gifts, and occasionally, I’ll get a cute pair of socks from those who know about my sock fetish.

But I think one of the best gifts I ever got came from my parents about a decade or so ago. I was visiting from Alaska for Christmas. They surprised me with a pair of second-row tickets to see the “Hairspray” musical. Why did this make such a great gift? Well, I’ve been obsessed with the John Waters’ movie since childhood. I would watch “Hairspray” constantly. I loved the dancing, the actors, the music. Just everything about it—and at the time, I didn’t even know the “Hairspray” musical existed. It was a surprise in numerous ways, and still stands out in my mind as one of the best gift-opening moments ever.

In The Working Elf Blues, Garnet gives Wes a very special Christmas gift. It’s one he doubts throughout the story, worrying it might seem silly or childish, but it’s highly personal, and when he finally works up the courage to give Wes the gift, well, it’s one of my favorite moments in the story. If you read it, you’ll see why. 🙂

So, what was the best gift you ever received for the holidays? One that really fit you and your personality? I’d love to hear about it. And if you’re interested in winning a copy of The Working Elf Blues, along with an adorable pair of elf-themed holiday socks, check out my blog post. The giveaway is open until December 21st.

Happy holidays to those of you who celebrate. Keep safe and warm! 🙂

About The Working Elf Blues

The Working Elf BluesGarnet Evergreen has never heard of an elf abandoning the North Pole for a human, but he yearns to be the first. Ever since he saw Wes, the boy with sorrowful eyes, Garnet felt an undeniable kinship. Over the years, he’s watched that boy grow into a man, and now he’s determined to give Wes a Christmas he’ll never forget. If only Garnet had thought to test his father’s sleigh before leaving…

Orphaned as a child, Wes spends every Christmas alone at his cabin. When he’s woken by a suspicious boom and finds a wrecked sleigh and an unconscious elf, he doesn’t know how to react. Wes isn’t fanciful. He doesn’t give much credence to the stories about Santa Claus and flying reindeer. But a part of him wants desperately to believe when Garnet promises forever, even if life has taught him that no one ever stays…

Honorary Blogger A.F. Henley: Authors Writing Authors + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Authors Writing Authors

by A.F. Henley

As I’ve already stated earlier in the tour, my intentions at the beginning of this let’s-introduce-the-world-to-The Chase and The Catch-journey where simple ones: offer up an excerpt, run a giveaway, and tack on a purchasing link to send the interested in the right direction. The Blogger Girls were having none of my lazy-ass shenanigans. So for them, with my thanks, I thought I’d discuss the concept of authors writing author MCs.

There are few things in life that I find quite as amusing as the idea that authors who write authors are involved in the act of self-insertion. Don’t get me wrong, self-insertion is a wonderful thing and I highly recommend it. I just prefer my acts of self-insertion to take place in the shower or the bedroom with an instrument of indulgence, if you know what I’m getting at.

But… but… (says the skeptical, unimpressed critic) obviously if you’re writing about an author that means you’re representing yourself with the character!

To which I say, now wouldn’t that be quite the story. Let’s imagine it, shall we?  A forty-some storyteller who eats too much pizza, drinks too much wine, avoids sunlight and people at almost any cost, and spends way, way too much time on tumblr and CockyBoys. Anybody interested? Is there a line forming anywhere for publishing rights to that particular story? No… I didn’t imagine there would be.

Just so I’m clear – I love my life. It’s perfect… For me. Not for my characters.

I personally believe that authors write author MCs for the same reason that a businessman would write about an executive and a health professional would write about a doctor – relatability, ease of placement, and an understanding of existing issues. That’s it. Plain and simple. It has nothing to do with living vicariously through the character (though don’t we all do that with fiction somewhat?).

We’re all looking for connection, be it physical, emotional, or intellectual. It’s a basic human desire. However, finding a love interest like Parker Chase is not, shall we say, high on my list of things to do before I die. I doubt there would be many people that are actively looking for mind games or attitude-rich power plays. Let me put it this way – if I was self-inserting into this story, the attractive and calculating Mr. Chase would still be roasting over some form of open fire as I type this.

I do love writing about them, though; almost as much as I love reading about them. Cracking a character like in fiction is exciting. It’s rewarding. It’s overcoming obstacles and finding something interesting in the middle of a shit-storm. That’s what romance-based fiction is all about.

So to that end, I reiterate that the endearing author in The Chase and The Catch has no more to do with me than the fact that we share the same term on our resumes.

My huge thanks to The Blogger Girls for having me by, and an extra special thank you for your blog post request. It’s been an honour to be a guest on your site.
AF Henley ❤

About The Chase and the Catch

The Chase and the Catch [Ebook]After one of his fans committed suicide, John lost everything: lover, confidence, drive. When he is given a chance to get back on his feet, he is happy to take it—even if it’s just writing an actor’s autobiography. It might not be romance, or even fiction, but it’s something, and there are worse people to work for than the charming, successful Parker Chase.

That doesn’t mean working for Parker is easy, however. A staunch supporter of living for the moment, Parker goes against everything John believes in. He feels out of place in every moment of Parker’s Hollywood life, stuck in a game of wits that at times seems almost contrived…

An Excerpt from The Chase and the Catch

Brilliant sunlight shot daggers of pain into John’s eyes and he fumbled for his sunglasses with one hand, blocking with the other, as if, somehow, a single leather-gloved hand would do any good against the assault. Snow had fallen the previous night and everything gleamed with the lustre of freshly polished silver. The parking lot was a postcard-worthy image of pristine white surfaces surrounded by burdened evergreen branches and puff-capped fence posts—the kind of scene that a year prior would have found John dragging out his tablet, inspired into tapping words about flush-cheeked kiddies or curiously joyful rodents. Now the view just made him want to growl about delays and inconveniences.

“Did you call ahead?”

John adjusted his sunglasses, flipped up his collar, and thumbed at the dash of the car. “Yeah. No flight delays. Pop the trunk, will you?” When his sister didn’t react, John tilted his head and sighed. “What?”

She didn’t hesitate, but then Jenna never did. With everyone in his life still treating him like he was going to explode into a million shards of anxiety every time he opened his mouth, Jenna could be counted on to speak when she felt like she needed to. And even the times when she just damn well wanted to. “You don’t have to do this.”

“Actually, no, I really do.” He worked up a smile. “I mean, I could drive, but the weather’s kind of shitty and it would take me something like thirty-five hours.”

“I don’t mean the flying and you know it.” Jenna snagged his jacket when John reached for the door handle. “You don’t have to run off and do this. The writing will come back to you when you’re ready. Since when does a person trade poetry and romance for scribbling down some guy’s autobiography?”

John held up a finger. “Biography. My perspective. An autobiography would be—”

“What the fuck ever. Don’t change the subject. Let’s just say that this does end up being a good thing for your career.” She caught his gaze when he looked up with another smile, and pursed her lips. “It won’t be. But regardless. Why do you have to go down there? Why can’t you do it like a normal twenty-first century human being and use Skype? Or you know, the telephone? Why do you have to be a billion miles away from home? I can’t be the only one who thinks this isn’t the smartest idea you’ve ever come up with. You haven’t exactly been…” She tapped her temple. “Well.”

John rolled his eyes and drew a snort of disgust through his nostrils in the extended, too loud way that he knew drove her crazy.

Jenna’s grip tightened into a fist. “Seriously. I’ve done some research on this guy, John—”

“Really?” John feigned absolute shock. “Me too! Weird…”

“I’m just not sure you’ve thought this all the way through. The guy can be an asshole. Self-centered, pompous—”

He disengaged Jenna’s fingers from his coat, placed her hand on the seat, and patted the back of it. “I’m sure his fans would disagree. As a matter of fact, most of them would have you drawn and quartered for even daring to think such a thing.”

“I couldn’t give a single fuck about any of his fans.” Her fingertips began to play a beat on the vinyl seat. “I care about you. And you already feel bad enough without immersing yourself into the life of a narcissist—”

John whistled through his teeth. “Harsh.”

“Read the blogs.”

John rolled his eyes and snapped the handle of the door. The onslaught of cold air was immediate. A good thing, John decided. It would get him out of the car that much faster if Jenna was shivering like a Chihuahua. “I’ve read the blogs. And I’ve read his Twitter and stalked his Tumblr and, and, and. He’s interesting. There’s a good story hidden behind that damn mask he’s been wearing for the last decade, and I want to be the one to dig it out.”

“You write romance—”

“No.” John drew himself out of the car and then turned back to lock up their eyes. “I write. Plain and simple. Now, please, pop the trunk. Because if I miss this flight due to the fact you’re holding my luggage hostage, I swear to God that I will make you pay for the next one. First class, nonetheless.”

He shut the door with a solid swing and walked to the back of the car to wait for the latch to release. The sound of the trunk popping was almost simultaneous with the clunk of the driver’s door opening.

“You call every day,” Jenna said, rounding the car, the high heels of her boots managing to click soundly even through the layer of snow. “I mean every fucking day.”

John dragged two suitcases out of the car and nodded at the open trunk. “I will. Get that for me, please?”

She ignored the trunk to worry her hands against one another. “And take your medication.”

“I haven’t been on meds for weeks now.” It was somewhat of a lie, but John soothed himself with the thought that the statement was mostly true. He still took the sleeping pills, but the antidepressants were gone. Thank fuck.

“By doctor’s orders or your own?” Jenna’s glare was colder than the wind.

John leaned forward, kissed Jenna on the cheek, and turned towards the glass doors of the airport. “Be good, Jen. And get back in the car before you freeze to death. Mom would kill you if she saw you out here in that jacket.”

“I can park,” Jenna called. “Come in and sit with you?”

“No time.” He kicked the silver disc that would operate the automatic door. “Flight’s probably already boarding.” He slipped through the half-open door. “Drive safe.”

“And what do I do if Sam calls?”

John bit back the reaction to tell Jenna she could invent new ways to penetrate the man with large, unforgiving objects, and pass them on to Sam in graphic detail. Instead: “He won’t.”

“But if he does?”

“He won’t.”

She was still standing beside the open trunk when he turned to walk away. She was worried. They all were: his agent, his parents, and his friends; her husband Mark, and probably both their terriers and their entire tank of fish. Not that he could blame them. It hadn’t been a good year. He’d always been able to use his writing to get him away from his problems, a retreat of sorts, where he could work things out in his head before having to deal with them. So when the words had abandoned him, be it in retaliation for the pills he’d taken too frequently, or because his brain was too busy focusing on the images of horror that kept playing through it, John had thought he was going to lose his mind.

Confusion had become depression. Panic escalated into obsessive-compulsive behaviour. He was no longer ‘that crazy writer.’ He was just fucking crazy.

“But this is writing,” John mumbled, staring at the flight board and trying to make his eyes focus on the words that would tell him where to go. “It’s still writing.” After all, what biography wasn’t spiced a bit here and there? Perspective was everything. And if Mr. Parker Chase—actor-extraordinaire, supposed-charmer, but potentially more-of-an-egotistical-dick-than-his-agent-would-like-anyone-to-know—was willing to let John be the one to offer that perspective, then it didn’t matter that the story wasn’t fiction. Or romance. Or even working its way towards a happy ending. He could live with the compromise just to be at it again.

Honorary Blogger B. Snow: Bedtime Stories (Anthology) and A New Twist on an Old Tale + Giveaway!

Bedtime Stories (Anthology) and A New Twist on an Old Tale

by B. Snow

Thanks very much to The Blogger Girls for giving me the chance to talk about Bedtime Stories, which came out this past Wednesday! When Anna Martin contacted me about being part of an anthology with a few other authors, I thought she’d made a mistake, but no, she’d read my story in Cross Bones (Dreamspinner Press, 2011) and liked it. I haven’t actually read the other stories in the anthology yet, so I have no idea what they’re about, but mine is a combination of a couple of story ideas I’ve had floating around my head – a father who falls in love with his kid’s babysitter, and a guy who really, truly, honestly does not know he is gay.

I should probably post an excerpt of that story because that’s why I’m guest blogging, but I have something different in mind for this post. >:D

Last month when I was at Prism Book Alliance to talk about the Project Fierce Chicago anthology, which benefits Project Fierce Chicago, I offered up a synopsis of Cinderedgar, i.e. the Cinderella story if it were about gay guys. At that time, I asked for suggestions for the next gay retelling of a fairy tale, and a commenter named Allison suggested “Beauty and the Beast”.

I started thinking about what I knew of the story and how it would translate to two men. A story jumped into my head, but it’s much darker than the fun, flirty Cinderedgar. It’s about a young man who was born with every advantage. (I don’t know his name yet, so let’s call him “Y”.) Y’s parents were wealthy and good-looking, and in time Y grew up to be very handsome and ready to enjoy his family’s money. He and his friends would go from club to club in the evenings, taking their pick of the best-looking men, to enjoy in back rooms or to take home for the night.

Their dalliances never lasted long; Y grew bored easily and didn’t mind if it took a couple hundred bucks to get the entertainment to leave. If said entertainment complained – or worse, professed any sort of emotional attachment to Y – household security would arrive within seconds of being called, ready to remove any unwanted items from Y’s suite of rooms.

Y never considered that his actions might be cold or cruel; he was twenty-five years old, gorgeous, still in his sexual prime. Men lined up for a chance to suck Y’s dick or to have him plow their asses. He was doing them a favor. If they didn’t like it, they could go find someone with a lower attractiveness quotient.

One night Y and his friends decide to go slumming. They walk into an older gay bar, very different from the flashy clubs they’re used to. The room goes quiet, and Y preens, knowing that all eyes are on him. He struts the length of the room, calling out how each customer offends him: “Old, old, fat, old, too hairy, bad skin, bad teeth, get a nose job,” and so on, his friends laughing uncontrollably, until he gets to an old man leaning on a cane.

“I don’t even know where to begin,” the old man says. “Maybe manners, first.”

“What are you talking about? God, I hope I die before I get as old and ugly as you,” Y sneers.

“You’ll see.” The old man pulls the lavender carnation from his lapel and offers it to Y.

Y slaps it out of his hand. His friends laugh again and then they pull Y out of the bar, complaining about the smells and the people.

The next morning when Y wakes up, he can’t move at first. His legs and arms feel strange, and he starts to panic, thinking he’s had a stroke. He manages to roll onto his side and push himself up, and that’s when he sees what’s happened. Somehow, overnight, he has gained a good fifty pounds. There’s a heavy layer of flesh all over his body that wasn’t there the night before, and where his six-pack used to be, now there’s a keg. He heaves himself out of bed and hurries to the bathroom, a scream building in his throat. It escapes when he sees his face now neatly divided – the top half covered with acne, the bottom half, with a thick, dark beard. Another scream as he grabs at the top of his head where wavy blond hair used to be. Now it’s a shiny, bald pate. It’s as if his hair darkened and migrated to – oh, dear God – his shoulders. And back!

His screams bring household security, who draw their guns on the apparent stranger in the house, then his friends and parents, who cannot hide their revulsion. Once everyone has calmed down and accepted (however difficult it may be) that this….creature….is indeed Y, they leave him. His friends can’t look at him without disgust. His parents escape with the excuse of hiring a private investigator to get to the bottom of this. After they go, Y crawls back into bed, sobbing. There, he finds a lavender carnation. He slaps himself in the face several times, trying to wake himself up from what has to be a horrible nightmare, but eventually he has to admit that it’s all real.

After borrowing some clothes from the gardener (his own no longer fit), he has his driver take him back to the bar from the previous night. The old man is there. In his lapel is another lavender carnation, a twin to the one Y is grinding to pieces in his fist.

“You did this to me!” Y screams at him.

“Yes,” the man answers.

Y goes silent. He didn’t really think any of this was real. He’d hoped he was hallucinating. But somehow it was real, and the old man was responsible. He swings his fist and catches nothing but air.

Now the old man is across the room. “You should be more careful who you piss off,” he tells Y. “I decided to teach you a lesson by turning you into everything you hate. You can continue to hate men who are fat or hairy or ugly – all by your standards, mind you – or you can grow up and see beyond the physical. The choice is yours.”

“I’ll kill you!”

“You’re welcome to try,” the man says, smiling. “But if I were you, I’d concentrate on breaking this curse.”

Those words stop Y. “How do I do that?”

“By learning to love yourself, and getting someone else to love you.”

Y snorts. “Fine. I’ll work out, take the weight off, wax this gross shit off my back. It’ll be like before. I loved myself, and everyone else loved me, too.”

“Young man, you could not be more wrong, on both counts.” The man met Y’s dagger-glare with a calm gaze. “I wish you the best of luck. Oh, did I mention that you have until your next birthday to accomplish your tasks? If you succeed, you may return to your previous appearance, or whatever form you desire. If you fail….”

“What?”

“Well, I’ll have to think about that. But it won’t be pleasant.”

——–

So that’s about all I have so far, a combination of story and synopsis. The next part is about how Y’s friends ditch him and his parents don’t want to be around him, so they hire a personal assistant who is really more of a babysitter. Beau is 40 and needs the money badly enough that he’s willing to put up with a horrible, angry, spoiled brat.

What do you think? Should I write it out as an actual story? I want to; it turns out that reworking fairy tales is hella fun, and there are all sorts of things to explore here, but I worry about copyright infringement….Is there a lawyer among the commenters? 🙂

Thanks for reading!

About Miles To Go

Bedtime StoriesIn “Miles To Go” (one of seven stories in Bedtime Stories), Joe is clinging by his fingernails to his marriage and, apparently, his sanity, because he’s having a very hard time understanding why his wife of nearly ten years, the mother of his child, thinks he’s gay. Marty has agreed to go to marriage counseling on one condition: that Joe go out on seven dates with men to see if anything sparks.

Joe thinks it’s an incredible waste of time, an exercise in futility, because he’s straight. Obviously, he’s straight. He’s married, has a kid, and the reason he’s never looked at another woman is because he loves his wife so much. And because he loves her, he agrees to go on the dates.

Since Marty is working evenings, she hires Danny to babysit while Joe is out testing the same-sex waters. Danny makes Joe uncomfortable for a variety of reasons, but he really is great with Ethan, Joe and Marty’s son. Danny tells classic bedtime stories to Ethan, and he tells very different stories to Joe. Danny’s stories make Joe blush, but they also make him think – about Marty, about his marriage, and about his sexuality.
