Five Things You Need to Know

by Z.A. Maxfield

A happy hello and many thanks to The Blogger Girls for inviting me to be here today to share my latest book release, Hell On Wheels.

There are five things you need to know about Love Interest Spencer Kepler Constantine:

  1. He doesn’t express his emotions. Please, he’s English.
  2. He believes living in the public eye is the price he pays for doing what he loves. Up until his very public, acrimonious split from Peter Constantine, fame was his friend. Now, he feels humiliated and enraged. However, see #1.
  3. He has a personal assistant named Bast, and a bodyguard, Tui Makura, whom everyone calls Tick.
  4. He has a wry sense of humor, a decent heart, and is more than capable of learning from his many and sometimes disastrous mistakes.
  5. His car has broken down on the highway, late at night.

Enter Nash Holly, mechanic, bon vivant, hellraiser–the man who will change Spencer’s life forever

About Z.A. Maxfield

Z.A. Maxfield started writing in 2007 on a dare from her children and never looked back.  Pathologically disorganized, and perennially optimistic, she writes as much as she can, reads as much as she dares, and enjoys her time with family and friends. Three things reverberate throughout all her stories: Unconditional love, redemption, and the belief that miracles happen when we least expect them.

If anyone asks her how a wife and mother of four can find time for a writing career, she’ll answer, “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you give up housework.”

Readers can visit ZAM at her website, Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr.

Honorary Blogger Charlie Cochrane: Write What You Know? + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Write What You Know?

by Charlie Cochrane

They say you should write what you know. My response to that is, “Stuff and nonsense!” If people only wrote what they knew we’d have no Lord of the Rings (Tolkien was neither ent nor elf) or the Aubrey/Maturin books (Patrick O’Brian was never an officer in the age of sail). Taken to its logical, if excessive, conclusion, writing only what you know means everything has to be semi-autobiographical, because as soon as you write about any other person, in any setting other than the ones you’ve experienced, you’re writing what you don’t know for certain.

How desperately dull would that be, for both author and reader?

However, I’m not an advocate of “write about any and everything”. The author has to be able to create a world which feels authentic. O’Brian did masses of research for his Jack Aubrey books and it shows in the wonderful atmosphere he creates. Ditto Mary Renault with her books set in Ancient Greece. The dialogue, surroundings, clothes, manners and all the rest of it, must make a cohesive whole.

2014 is definitely the year of me writing about something I know very well, and that’s being a school governor. Now, before you roll your eyes and yawn, let me assure you that tensions can run very high in committee meetings. People care greatly about their schools and their children, and where people care, emotions flare up. Absolutely great fiction-fodder! I also train school governors (and my goodness, you meet some interesting characters in those sessions). I remember coming away from a selection and interviewing course thinking, “There’s a story to be told there,” not least because of the potential double entendres, and the fun you can have taking the mickey out of the jargon that tends to crop up.

Earlier this year MLR published my short story, Horns and Haloes, inspired by the experiences I’ve had running that course (and noting some of the daft questions people want to ask). That’s a sweet, funny little romance; while it was gestating, I had bigger fish frying. The idea for “The Best Corpse for the Job” arose when I was driving back from a school where I’d been delivering some training to help with their process of selecting a new headteacher. The session had been nicely sparky, and it occurred to me that if that sparkiness had been channelled in the wrong direction, blows could have been exchanged.

Both of these tales involve gay school governors. I must have met some of those, among the hundreds I’ve trained over the last few years, although I rarely get to train any governors as fit as Adam Matthews, the teacher governor from Best Corpse. I know of at least three gay headteachers at schools within twenty miles of where I’m on a governing body. They’re all three bloody good at their jobs, and why shouldn’t they be? And two of them are at church schools, so I had no qualms making my men work at church schools, too. That’s the reality of life. If anybody argues, and says that’s not realistic, I can back myself very well. I’m writing about what I know.

About The Best Corpse for the Job

22741222Tea and sympathy have never been so deadly.

Schoolteacher Adam Matthews just wants to help select a new headteacher and go home. The governors at Lindenshaw St Crispin’s have already failed miserably at finding the right candidate, so it’s make or break this second time round. But when one of the applicants is found strangled in the school, what should have been a straightforward decision turns tempestuous as a flash flood in their small English village.

Inspector Robin Bright isn’t thrilled to be back at St. Crispin’s. Memories of his days there are foul enough without tossing in a complicated murder case. And that handsome young teacher has him reminding himself not to fraternize with a witness. But it’s not long before Robin is relying on Adam for more than just his testimony.

As secrets amongst the governors emerge and a second person turns up dead, Robin needs to focus less on Adam and more on his investigation. But there are too many suspects, too many lies, and too many loose ends. Before they know it, Robin and Adam are fighting for their lives and their hearts.

Gabriel’s City Virtual Tour + Giveaway!

GabrielsCity_TourBanner

Hi, everyone, thanks for having me on this tour for Gabriel’s City! Don’t forget to leave a comment at the end of this post to win a chance at the ZOMG Smells giveaway!

Spoiled young aristocrat Colin Harwood has always enjoyed flirting with danger, but he’s always been able to retreat to safety—until bad decisions and a chance encounter plunge him into a world far more savage than his own. Gabriel is an urban legend, famous in the underworld for his unpredictability and violence. He’s also a believer fairy tales, and quick to decide to the handsome stranger who came to his aid must be good luck. With few other options remaining, Colin will need to keep his wits about him to learn to survive in Gabriel’s City.

About Gabriel’s City: A Tale of Fables and Fortunes

For spoiled young aristocrat Colin Harwood, the port city of Casmile is a buffet of easy pleasures. But when he steps into a pub brawl to help a dangerously outnumbered young man, he is drawn into the seedy underbelly of the city the young man calls home.

Gabriel is a cutpurse and a knife for hire, practically an urban legend. His vision of Casmile is touched by a strange combination of faith and madness, driven by fairytale logic and a capacity for love that he often must suppress to survive. He’s always worked alone, but when a dashing dragon who calls himself Colin saves him in a bar fight, he pulls Colin into his world.

Gabriel’s city is nothing like the refined, socialite existence that bored Colin senseless. Colin finds adventure and excitement there—and maybe even love. But with his layers of finery stripped away, nothing remains to protect him from poverty or danger—except Gabriel. So he must choose: go back to the civilized young man he once was, or fly free as Gabriel’s dragon.

Honorary Blogger L.B. Gregg: Snapshots + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Snapshots

by L.B. Gregg

The second book in Riptide’s Bluewater Bay is my very own contribution—There’s Something About Ari.  The only novella in the collection, mine is a friends to lovers story about forgiveness and second chances. Hi. I’m L.B. Gregg and I’m happy to be here.

Some months ago, my editor emailed to ask if I’d like to contribute a story to a new multi-author project. The series would revolve around the community of Bluewater Bay, a former washed-up logging community on the Olympic Peninsula, and the vibrant new werewolf-themed detective drama being filmed there. Each book would be a stand alone novel featuring Bluewater Bay townies or folks involved in the Wolf’s Landing empire. I could develop my own characters to add to the town, or pull from the BWB universe bible. The door was wide open, the stage was set, as long as the book was contemporary, at least a little sexy, and I turned it in on time.

Honestly? I balked. I couldn’t imagine myself writing about werewolves or TV stars. What the hell did I know about the Pacific Northwest other than Starbucks, pine trees, Pearl Jam, and Portlandia?  Plus—did you see that line up of contributing authors? L.A. Witt, Z.A. Maxfield, Aleksandr Voinov, Heidi Belleau, Rachel Haimowitz, Anne Tenino, Amy Lane, SE Jakes, and G.B. Gordon. How did L.B. Gregg fit into that crowd?

I felt dowdy. Like Plain Jane surrounded by a glamorous assembly of writing superstars.

Actually, I felt a lot like Buck. So I said yes. The hook for me? Perspective. That feeling of ‘otherness’ became my starting place. I would write a story for this fictional town using my own distinct viewpoint, and created my own little corner of Bluewater Bay— Fifth Street.

The great thing about working with all these terrific authors is that we offer a kaleidoscope view of Bluewater Bay. Guided by our editor, we’ve cultivate the initial vision of BWB creators, LA Witt and Alexsandr Voinov, into tiny, vibrant snapshots of life and love in Bluewater Bay.

1Buck Ellis’s future seems pretty damn bright. With a full college scholarship in hand, he’s going to ditch Bluewater Bay and pave the way for his kid brother Charlie to do the same. But then Buck’s mother dies, changing everything, and five years later, his future is still on hold. It’s a struggle to keep food on the table, a roof over their heads, and Charlie on the straight and narrow. Buck can’t afford any temptation, especially in the form of the newly returned, super hot, super confident, super successful television star Ari Valentine.

ADHD poster-child Ari Valentine left for Hollywood and lost everything, including his bad reputation. Research & Liberties – Mixing Historical with Fantasy

by L.A. Witt

So one of the fun parts with Precious Metals (as well as Noble Metals) was taking an actual historical era (the Klondike Gold Rush) and mixing it with steampunk.  I still had to research it like I would a standard historical novel, but I went at it with the mindset of “how would this be different with the addition of steampunk technology?”

The challenge there is keeping it true to the real history, but also realistically adapting it to the added technology. In that sense, it’s kind of like alternate history—if a certain event in history were changed, how would the world be affected? If the Klondike Gold Rush happened after the invention of airships and mechs to carry provisions, how would things be different?

Well, the consensus of all my research was this: the Klondike Gold Rush was miserable. It was dangerous, it was a grueling journey, and more people died along the way than found gold at the end. I mean, there’s a reason one of the trails was nicknamed Dead Horse Trail, and it wasn’t because a tree stump looked like a dead horse. Basically, once you left Seattle and headed north, life was going to suck until you made it back.

So, add steampunk technology. How would things change? There were a number of ways, of course, but I’m an author, and therefore a sadist of sorts. Thus, my answer to that question was: Things would get worse.

Yeah, we’ve got airships now that can whisk you to Dawson City in warm luxury…except they’re horrendously expensive and have a habit of crashing into mountainsides.

Oh, we’ve got mechs to carry your provisions so you don’t have to feed horses/mules or break your own back…but they’re clumsy, they break if a bird farts, and don’t do so well on ice. And there’s a lot of ice in Alaska.

And hey, getting over the Chilkoot Pass is easy now that you can do it in one shot! No more crossing the pass a dozen times, carrying whatever you can before walking back over to pick up another load of provisions. Because, hey, mechs!  Oh. Right. The pass is covered in ice. And a mech sliding down the Golden Staircase (1,500 steps carved into the ice) while loaded down with a half ton or so of provisions isn’t dangerous at all.

So we’d better make sure every mech is sure-footed and in good repair before it starts going over the pass. Which means the Mounties have now opened an encampment on the south side where they inspect mechs and provisions. Which slows everybody down. And ticks everybody off. And generally makes for a camp full of cranky prospectors who kind of wish these stupid mechs had never been invented.

And that’s how Noble Metals and Precious Metals came about—start with a real point in history, add technology that backfires, stir rapidly, and throw in a couple of boys who would really like to turn around and go home, but can’t.

About Precious Metals

22674209For Constable Paul Benson of the North-West Mounted Police, monotony is a blessing. As a provision inspector below the Chilkoot Pass during the Klondike Gold Rush, he’s seen miserable conditions and gold fever turn civilized prospectors into madmen.

Joseph Starling is on his way to the Klondike to find the men who savagely beat him, murdered his eldest brother, and stole their mining machine. They’ll kill his youngest brother if Joseph doesn’t operate the machine for them—it won’t work without him. With time running out, Joseph must purchase an expensive ticket aboard a crash-prone airship. But the station is miles away through dangerous terrain.

Under orders, Paul grudgingly escorts Joseph, but quickly finds himself intrigued by the young man. As they make their way toward Juneau, it’s not just the need for warmth that drives them closer together. But neither man can draw an easy breath until they make it to the gold fields . . . and there’s no guarantee that Joseph’s brother will still be alive when they do.

About L.A. Witt

L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer currently living in the glamorous and ultra-futuristic metropolis of Omaha, Nebraska, with her husband, two cats, and a disembodied penguin brain that communicates with her telepathically. In addition to writing smut and disturbing the locals, L.A. is said to be working with the US government to perfect a genetic modification that will allow humans to survive indefinitely on Corn Pops and beef jerky. This is all a cover, though, as her primary leisure activity is hunting down her arch nemesis, erotica author Lauren Gallagher, who is also said to be lurking somewhere in Omaha.

L.A. Witt’s backlist is available on her website, and updates (as well as random thoughts and the odd snarky comment) can be found on her blog or on Twitter (@GallagherWitt).

Note from the author: I am in the process of relocating, and of course, I picked this week to make the drive from Nebraska to Seattle. As such, I’ll be at the mercy of hotel wifi and 3G signal in the middle of nowhere, but I will do my best to catch up whenever I’m stopped and/or when I reach my destination!
