Character Inspiration

by Davidson King

Snow started it all. Seriously. It was over a year ago. We were having a very long winter and it seemed to never stop snowing. Layers upon layers. I remember thinking how everything blended together and how when something fell through the snow it became one with it.

This made my mind wander and I actually pictured my daughter and how if she had white hair I wouldn’t find her in all the sparkling white snow. As my mind dug deeper she morphed into he, Snow. His story of why he’d be blending into the snow. Was he running, hiding, who was he?

I went home and started writing what he looked like. White blond hair, like fresh fallen…snow. Eyes so blue they almost glowed and were like blue fire when he was angry. Skin that challenged his hair for the right to be alabaster.

I then knew his personality would have to be just as sharp, amazing, and unique. I knew he’d be snarky and brave. He’d challenge and submit. He’d be outstanding.

Snow was light and there’s always darkness that accompanies light. Together they make a shadow. That was when Christopher came to be. His dark hair, dark eyes, olive complexion. His broad body and rough attitude was the polar opposite of Snow. Together they would mingle and become an eclipse.

I knew these two would be my characters. Christopher was born from Snow. I guess you could say they were born for each other.

Inspiration came with the weather and then with the light. Odd as it may sound that’s how they came to be.

Author Q&A: Adira August + Excerpts & Giveaway!

Interview Banner

Please welcome Adira August to The Blogger Girls!

What is the unqualified regret you wish you could amend?

Oh, way too many to pick one! But all of them seem to be things I didn’t do, or was afraid to do, instead of things I did.

What is the temptation you wish you could resist?

Judging people. We’re just not equipped to do it, not knowing all things about either the person or situation. But it’s too easy, even if I don’t say it out loud, to cast judgment. And all that is, is me saying “I’m better than they are.” And that is just so not true.

What is the book that holds everlasting resonance?

To Kill a Mockingbird Harper Lee  More recently, Glitterland by Alexis Hall.

What is the priority activity if you were invisible for a day?

I would not like being invisible. So I’d stay inside and do what I always do, because that way, relative to the rest of the world, I’m as visible as I always am.

What is the film you can watch time and time again?

Field of Dreams – for its accurate depiction of the relationship between here and there.

Who is the person who influenced you the most?

I bet it was Isaac Asimov. Sometimes it’s hard to know how much you are being influenced by someone. Asimov claimed he was an atheist and I’m sure he was being genuine. He was such a cheerful atheist! To me, who is not an atheist, he was a mystic. His universe and the realities depicted there are so obviously inspired, to my view.

What is the unlikely interest that engages your curiosity?

There’s hardly anything that doesn’t engage my curiosity. You can find a lot of it in my books. I don’t write erotica because I think it will make me a pile of cash. I’ve always been interested in what makes us human. The human sexual dynamic is extraordinarily complex. Hardly a bit of genetic control. A widely varying spectrum of desires and behaviors and biology and cultural influence. Society tries so hard to control it all, to label it, decide what’s normal or acceptable or vile.  So, it’s not unlikely, but it is the thing I struggle to understand and convey and elevate and demystify.

What is the song that means the most to you?

Monster by Steppenwolf. “America, where are you now, don’t you care about your sons and daughters? Don’t you know, we need you now, we can’t fight alone against the monster?”

What is the unfulfilled ambition that continues to haunt you?

I don’t have that, really. I’m spoiled. I did everything I ever wanted to do. I got jobs that were highly competitive just by asking.

What is your earliest recollections of writing fiction?

I was 8. I wrote a book in crayon on little squares of paper and glued the edges together. I self-published!

Who is the figure from history you would most like to buy a pie and a pint?

I have several direct ancestors who fought the Revolutionary War. I want to buy the wife of the one who first came to these shores a lunch, because women were hardly acknowledged to exist. I wish I could know her. Because her husband, the one who carried my last name – or I carry his, of course – he loved her. He cared for her in his will, gave her security for life. Senna. His nickname for her. If I wrote historical romance, I’d write about them. Lord Fairfax gave him his land because he held Fairfax’ horse when he was drunk one night and his team of surveyors were laughing at him. Washington was one of his surveyors.

What is the piece of wisdom you would pass onto a child?

I have no wisdom. I might have advice, I guess: Hang on. Just hang on and try to be a little bit kinder than you think you can be.

What is the treasured item you lost and wish you could have again?

My grandmother’s engagement ring. It was stolen by a supposed “friend.” I never knew her, the ring was all I had of her.

What is he crime you would commit knowing you could get away with it?

Murder. I have an extensive better dead list of child abusers. But I’d need a real vision, not to tell me I’d get away with it, but to tell me it’s as good an idea as I think.

What is the philosophy that underpins your life?

Love is what you do, not what you feel.

Who is the character you enjoyed writing the most?

In the whole of the River Hart universe, it’s Benedict Hart. He’s so unexpected in his relationships. So entirely loving. Yet, I’m sure he’d be vastly surprised to hear himself described that way.

I know I’m supposed to pick Hunt or Cam, and I love them so much. But don’t always enjoy writing them because they do whatever the hell they want and I’m kinda the last to know. They make me cry as often as they make me laugh.

In the HuntandCam4Ever series, the character I most enjoy writing is Chez, the owner of Scene and Not Heard. He’s far more complex than I think is obvious from the brief times we encounter him. I’m thinking I’ll be writing these books for the rest of my life and I hope, someday, these bits and pieces of him will add up in the minds of readers who follow the series to paint a picture of him as I see him.

Who is the character you found the most difficult to write?

The Killer in Matchstick. I always end up inside them, or they inside me. It was a very hard place to be, so dark and broken.

What is the book you enjoyed planning/writing the most?

I don’t plan them, at all, they sort of happen to me. I’m really anticipating writing the next Hunter Dane Investigation, though, Psychic Men.

These first three books form a kind of world-building, character creating triumvirate thingy. They have the power of Canon. Now we’re all set. We have backstory and history.

The coming novels will be shorter with a steadier thruline. The relationship will be there, the trials and watching how they respond to those, grow, each so uniquely valuable to the crime-solving process and to each other.

Psychic will be the first of those. What’s interesting to me is, all the psychic stuff will be from actual reported experiences of average people, research programs, all that. I have to change names but the events are totally based in reality. So how fun will that be? blogger_bee_trans Continue reading

Exclusive Excerpt from No Limit

His hand still on Connor’s cheek, Josh leaned in, kissed him softly. He wrapped his arms around Connor, hugged him tight.

“Josh, promise me one thing,” Connor whispered in his ear.

Josh leaned back so he could see his face, but held his arms around Connor’s neck.

“If I fuck up with you, if I hurt you with what I do or say, tell me. Please, tell me, so I can try and make it right. I’m winging this, Josh. I don’t know what I’m doing with you or how to be in a relationship, but I want to learn to take care of you, okay?”

Josh nodded. “Does that mean we’re in a relationship?” he asked softly. He didn’t want to pressure Connor, but he didn’t want to hide either. If Connor wanted them to be together, he’d have to come out and say it, own it.

“Yes. You’re mine, Josh, and I’ll say it to anyone you need me to.”

“Your work?”

Connor swallowed. “I’ll tell them.”

Joy sparked in Josh’s heart. Connor was willing to come out of the closet for him. He was truly serious about them. “Did you mean what you said about Noah and Indy this morning?”

“Yes. I get that you need them, even if it’s hard for me to not be jealous. But Josh, anything more than kissing and you talk to me first, ask me for permission.”

Yup, there it was again. That authoritative tone that made Josh want to bend over and take it. “Yes, Connor,” he said. The satisfied look on Connor’s face was beautiful. “Will you spank me if I disobey?” Josh teased.

Connor laughed. “I’m not sure that would be effective as a punishment, seeing how much you’re looking forward to it. I’ll have to find something else more deterring, like not fuck you for a week.”

Josh’s eyes went big. “Damn, that’s cruel.”

Not Just For Christmas by Annabelle Jacobs

Ben has Christmas, cats, and mistletoe on his side…. Jason doesn’t stand a chance

For Ben Slater, moving back to Bristol means being closer to his family, living with his best mate, and volunteering at the local animal shelter. But there’s also Jason, his best mate’s eldest brother. Ben’s had a crush on Jason for as long as he can remember, but the eleven-year age gap has always seemed insurmountable.

Jason Armitage works as a vet at his uncle’s practice. He owns a cute cottage on the outskirts of the city, and a loving dog. The one thing missing is someone to share it all with. His brother’s best friend seems a bad choice, but Jason can’t help taking a second look. Ben’s changed a lot since Jason last saw him; both in appearance and attitude. Gone is the shy young boy, replaced with a confident, twenty-four-year-old man.

In the run up to Christmas, the festive period gives Ben the ideal opportunity to show Jason what he has to offer. But concerns for his brother’s feelings hold Jason back. If they have any chance of making this work, Ben must convince Jason that he’s old enough to know what he wants, and Jason needs to believe that a relationship with his brother’s best friend won’t ruin their friendship.

Honorary Blogger Sera Trevor: About the Characters + Excerpt & Giveaway!

About the Characters

by Sera Trevor

What’s in a name?

Well, a lot when you’re writing. When I’m writing a book, picking the right name can bring the whole character together. The wrong name, however, can leave me floundering. Sometimes the names come to me immediately, but other characters are more of a challenge.

In Curses, Foiled Again, I knew what to name my vampires right off the bat: Felix, one of my MCs, and his sister, Cat. I wanted my vampires to have a feline quality to them. I love how cats have dual identities—on the one hand, they can be very sleek and elegant, and are very efficient predators. On the other hand, they can also be ridiculous, as a million cat memes can attest to. Felix is named after the famous cartoon cat, and Cat—well, I think that’s self explanatory.

My other MC, John, was a little tougher. I wanted a sensible name that wasn’t very flashy, since John is a stoic person. I also wanted a very English name, to connect him with the centuries old curse that plagues him, which originated in the British colonies in the American colonial period. I think “John” fits the bill.

For John’s best friend, I wanted a Spanish name to reflect her Latina heritage. I have always loved the name “Dolores,” which derives from La Virgen María de los Dolores, which translates to “Virgin Mary of Sorrows.”  I shortened it to “Lo,” partly because “Dolores” feels a little old-fashioned for a young lady, and partly because “Lo” sounds like “low” and more directly hints at the “sorrow” connection. Lo isn’t a particularly sad person, but she’s someone who has faced sorrows in her life and come out stronger for it. Part of her role in the story is to show an alternative to the way John deals with tragedy—which is by shutting down and checking out of his own life. Lo faces things, which makes her healthier.

And finally, my villain, Richard, who had the wrong name for half the time I was writing the story. I called him “Gene” because it has some Old Hollywood connotations to me because of Gene Kelly, and he’s a character with a huge connection to Old Hollywood. But for the life of me, I could not figure his character out! His motivations were very slippery to me, and I spent a lot of time floundering. Finally, I made a list of some famous villains to see if anything jumped out at me. It worked—I picked Shakespeare’s Richard III as his namesake, and from then on out, I understood him completely. To say more would be spoiling things, but needless to say, he is a very tricky person.

I don’t think it’s necessary for authors to always have complex reasons behind the names they choose, but I do think that it’s a great opportunity to add an extra layer of meaning. It might not be something readers pick up on, but for me, having the right names helps shape the story. Continue reading

Circle of Darkness by Nicholas Bella & Aimee Nicole Walker: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Circle of Darkness

D’Angelo backed me up until I was pressed against the side of his Jeep. “Here I thought you wanted to help me.” His voice was low and menacing, yet I was getting hard because it was the same voice he used in my sexy dreams. It didn’t help when he pressed his body against mine. The electrical spark that only he could make me feel hummed beneath my skin. It sizzled through me at a lower voltage than the first time, but it was still enough to cause my synapses to misfire, leaving me muddled and dazed. D’Angelo’s determination to get answers was temporarily distracted by the hardness he felt pressing against him.

“I do want to help you,” I croaked.

“I can feel how badly you want to help me.” D’Angelo smirked. I saw lust flare in his hazel eyes but it was extinguished so quickly, I knew I must’ve been mistaken. It was obvious that the man didn’t mind playing dirty to get his way, either. He lowered his mouth until it hovered over mine. “Tell me everything you saw.”

“You’re just going to follow that man home and break into his house to steal that artifact once he’s gone to sleep. I can’t let you do it,” I protested, but I sounded weak even to my own ears.

“No one ‘lets’ me do anything, Ansell. I do what I want, when I want, and how often I want to.” Were we still talking about retrieving that artifact? “I don’t make excuses for who I am or what I do, and I sure as fuck won’t apologize.” Yeah, I’d definitely struck a nerve. An idea occurred to me, one that could backfire, but it was the only hope I had of saving his life that night.

A Die Hard Holiday by Aimee Nicole Walker: Exclusive Excerpt!

Exclusive Excerpt from A Die Hard Holiday

by Aimee Nicole Walker

The grandmas snatched my children away from me before I could take them upstairs for their nightly bath. Josh chuckled at my scowl and pointed toward the newspaper folded neatly on the table. “Why don’t you make the most of it and read the paper since you didn’t get the chance to this morning.”

“Where’s my glass of sherry, pipe, and slippers?” I asked.

“The fifties are calling and they want their Neanderthal back,” Josh replied sassily.

“You love it when I go caveman on you.”

“Yes, in bed. You just keep it up and see where it gets you.”

“Oh, are you threatening to withhold sex again? I wonder if you can make it past ten minutes this time.” I scanned the front page and didn’t see anything too interesting. I opened to the second page and all my good humor vanished when I saw a smug, smiling face of a man I wanted to punch. “Did you know about this?”

“Can you be more specific, dear?”

“Did you know your ex-lover is the newest resident at Blissville Family Medicine?”

“Uh, I might’ve seen something about it on their Facebook page last week.”

“Last week?” I asked hotly. “When were you going to tell me?”

Josh snorted and said, “I was hoping for never.” My husband washed and dried his hands before he turned to look at me. “He won’t last long around here, babe. He’s a big city boy not suited for a small town. He’ll get bored and move on to someplace else. I didn’t see the need to upset you.”

“Of all the places he could’ve gone, he chose your hometown?”

Josh shrugged. “It doesn’t really matter though, does it? He’s not you.” Josh returned back to his beloved stove and lowered the battered meat into the hot oil. To him, the conversation was over, but my mind was still rolling the new information as I processed it from every angle.

Leaning Into a Wish by Lane Hayes: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Leaning Into a Wish

by Lane Hayes

I sat on the metal bench and swiped my wrist across my forehead before uncapping my water bottle and taking a healthy swig. I sensed Danny’s stare in my periphery, but I was too tired and thirsty to ask what he was looking at. I set my half-empty bottle aside and stretched my legs in front of me before glancing up just as Danny peeled his polo shirt over his head, revealing his smooth, toned torso and the most incredible six-pack I’d ever seen on a man up close. The hint of ink south of his belly button that looked something like the wings of a phoenix completed the picture. The man was seriously drool-worthy.

“Whatcha looking at, Ry?” he teased, shoving his sweaty shirt into his tennis bag and pulling out a fresh white tee.

“Nothing,” I lied. “Aren’t you going to put a shirt on? It’s getting cool.” I pointed to the clouds gathering overhead lamely, unsurprised when he chuckled.

“I’ll take my chance with the sixty-eight-degree cold spell,” he said with a wolfish grin.

And that was when I realized the little fucker was baiting me. He’d caught me staring at him and he liked it. In fact, he might have orchestrated that striptease at the optimal moment to ensure I saw the whole show. Hmm. This was an interesting twist. What kind of idiot purposely taunted a gay man with his sexy bod without expecting some sort of retaliation?

“You’re trying to turn me on, aren’t you?” I asked in a raspier than usual tone.

Danny’s faux-shocked expression cracked me up. “Well…”

“Maybe that wasn’t your intention but I’m warning you, I’m going through a tragic dry spell in the sex department. Even you look kinda hot to me.”

I expected him to throw his clean T-shirt over his head in seconds flat. Instead, his wide-eyed look of surprise slowly morphed into a radiant grin that clearly said, “Bring it on.”

        “Even me, eh?”

Author Q&A: Felice Stevens + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Interview Banner

Please welcome Felice Stevens to the Blogger Girls!! Do you remember the moment you got the idea for this book? If so, what were you doing at the time?

I do!  I was in bed, falling asleep when an idea came to me to write a book about 3 foster brothers who grew up together and how they were torn apart. In my head, the name of the series was originally The House of the Rising Sun. I have no idea why. lol

What made you want to become an author and why choose the genres that you write in?

I always wanted to be a writer. From when I was a child I was writing stories, mainly mysteries because that’s what I grew up reading. Then when I was in law school to break from the studies, I started reading romance. I picked up MM romance after winding my way through MF, then MFM and then MMM. I chose to write MM romance because I love stories about love. And I love men. And I am a firm believer that people who are in love deserve their HEA and nobody has a right to tell someone who to love.

What is the first book that made you cry?

I don’t remember, but maybe Bambi?  When his mother died.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?

When I have an idea the writing energizes me. When I’m having trouble it’s exhausting.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

I have no idea. LOL Did I fail?

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

If you mean the first book I had published by Loose Id, Rescued, it was the rigorous editing process. I learned that I may love a scene or a line, but that doesn’t mean it’s best for the overall story. If you mean when I first self-published, I learned that I can actually run a small, successful business on my own. Well not my own, along with my editors, proofreaders, beta readers and my cover artist. It takes a village.

What’s your favorite under-appreciated novel?

This Perfect Day by Ira Levin. I’ve read it so many times it’s fallen apart.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

An otter. They’re so fun and friendly and I want one as a pet.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you currently have?

Well. In MF historical I have four.  Two completely finished and one finished but not edited, one half finished. Then another one started but its been a long time since I looked at it. In MM, I have one three-quarters finished and one I started thinking about today for the next Kindle World Launch in January.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Hmm. Making sure they aren’t stereotypes. I write all different types of men both physically and emotionally. I don’t like the alpha super hunk or the twinky type. I want realism in my books and that’s what I strive for. I think getting into the head of the character and making them relatable as people is more important than their six-pack abs. Once Upon a Rainbow by Various Authors: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Morning Star

by Sydney Blackburn

Tariq ducked his head and murmured, “Yes, master.” He understood exactly what his master wanted him to do, even if he did not understand why. Magic had its reasons. Malik was a saahir of great renown and Tariq was fortunate to be his apprentice. One day, he too would know the mysteries of sihr and the healing blessings of barakah.

His unquestioning obedience was rewarded with a careless caress as Malik’s elegantly long fingers brushed through his dark hair, lingering a little too long. Or so Tariq imagined.

His feelings for his master and mentor were wrong. He knew that. Malik, great sorcerer that he was, would be horrified to know the wayward thoughts and unnatural desires of his apprentice.

Tariq was embarrassed when those fingers then moved lightly over his ear, sending a tremor of desire through his slight frame. He resisted the urge to push his head into the touch. His cheeks were burnished with shame when Malik lifted his chin so that they were eye to eye.

“It’s not just about stealing a perfume jar, my boy. It’s about the future. Our future.”

Tariq swallowed as his heart beat a little faster. “Y-yes, master.”

Malik smiled warmly at him and released his chin to take his hand. He slipped a brass ring, still warm, onto Tariq’s finger and then closed both hands over Tariq’s. “This ring holds a spell of finding and returning. It will take you to the treasure room and bring you back safe to me.” He released Tariq’s hands and reached into the folds of his robe again, this time pulling out a small sandglass. “Set this upon your arrival. When the sands run out, the ring shall transport you back here, so waste no time staring at the marvels you may see. You are there for one thing only.”

Tariq reached for it, accidentally brushing Malik’s fingers with his own. Power seemed to spark through him until the ring, loose on his finger, rattled against the sandglass and whatever spell that might have woven vanished.

“The perfume jar that weighs empty. It shall be as you desire, master.”

Tariq collapsed in a heap, coughing and choking and clutching at the thick carpet beneath him as if he might fall off the very floor. The magic of the ring that had transported him had torn him apart and put him together in a rough fashion that left him nauseated and dizzy.

Awareness of the soft wool beneath his cheek helped steady him. Thank goodness it wasn’t dusty. Why had Malik not warned him of the effects of the ring? Perhaps a saahir such as Malik was able to use it without ill effect. Belatedly, he recalled the sandglass and carefully set it on the floor.

The room was cavernous and dimly lit by rays of sun piercing small decorative openings at the top of the thick walls. Tapestries were hung at odd angles. Ornately carved tables and chests filled the room, their surfaces covered with enamelled vases and precious statues. Smaller boxes spilled out jewels that glinted and cast a rainbow of coloured sparks over the smooth sandstone walls. The carpet he’d landed on was but one of several stacked on the floor, golden threads capturing stray beams and winking at him from delicate arabesques.

The sand was falling rapidly. He had no time to admire the many fine riches surrounding him. Where might one store perfume jars in such a room as this…? He turned slowly around, seeking shelves or cabinets. There, to his right, in the corner closest to the great doors most people would use to enter the treasure room, stood a large cabinet with girih-patterned doors.

There were clear, if narrow, paths around the piles of forgotten treasures, and Tariq took care in his haste to find what his master needed. He threw open the doors of the cabinet and saw half a dozen shelves laden with perfume jars of every description: coloured glass, smoothly gleaming metal, glass and silver, glass and gold, bejewelled, or merely intricately filigreed.

Cautiously he picked up one of the vessels. It was a blue globe with a simple silver stopper, and he raised it into the light. It was opaque, and he realized he had no idea what the difference was between a full jar and an empty one. He touched the stopper, hesitating. Malik had told him not to open the one that weighed empty. What if this was the very jar he’d been sent to find? And if it is not, he thought, Malik will be terribly disappointed in me.
