Magical Gifts

by Liz Borino

If someone asked non-writers “How do authors write so many words?” Based on my experience, I would expect responses ranging from:

“They’re crazy! I hated writing in school. Why would they choose to do it forever?”

To…

“I don’t know. It’s easy for them.” (This is often followed by a defense of pirating – which, for the purpose of keeping my blood pressure stable – I won’t get into.)

To…

“They just do. It’s a gift.”

Now if a writer hears any of these options on a good day, they may chuckle or shake their heads. None of the above are completely accurate. But since May I’ve been rethinking the whole gift idea. Please allow me to explain.

From March to the middle of May this year for no reason I understood, I struggled to write. I had a comprehensive outline, detailed character sheets, and scheduled time almost every day to write. Pushing these words out hurt, though. I didn’t consider this writer’s block because I knew where the story had to go, but I could not get it there. The characters who normally chatted were silent.

Silent.

I couldn’t create. Worse still, I wasn’t even sure I wanted to.

That was devastating for me. I feared I would never willingly write again. Never get swept into a life not my own. Have to live with silence in my head forever.

I realize this sounds crazy to those of you who don’t have people in your head (that you know aren’t real) but to those of us who do, the silence can be maddening.

Why yes, I did imply authors could become crazier than they already are. Do you realize how scary that is? No one wants to live in a world where creatives have no means of expression. Trust me.

Anyway, I ground the book out because I don’t like to abandon projects. As I wrote the last few chapters, though, something happened. A set of characters began needling my brain. Finally! Inspiration, I thought. But… then why did the man trying to get in my head wear a leather bomber jacket and have long hair? Neither of the characters I was writing looked like that. Of course. New boys. I nudged him to the back of my head because I could hardly handle the characters on the page much less take on another story.

You know, characters don’t appreciate being told to wait their turn. The man with long hair and a bomber jacket woke me up at night to inform me his name was Rhett and he was a pilot. Apparently, he wouldn’t wait for me to be ready. So, I dumped a rough outline of his and Kaden’s story into a Scrivener document, hoping that would suffice. No, it didn’t. He and Kaden kept talking. They told me about their histories, families, and passions. The two of them were bursting at the seams to get started.

“No,” I said. “Be patient.”  (As a side note, I have no right to tell anyone to be patient. Ever.) I was determined to finish what I started, but I made notes for Rhett and Kaden along the way.

Finally, I wrote “The End” on the other manuscript. I reveled in the sense of relief and fell into bed. With that book off my mind, I’d sleep so well.

Four and a half hours later…

“What are you doing?” Rhett demanded as he knocked on my brain. “It’s our turn!”

Sigh. And so it was. Readers, after struggling to write for two months, I wrote the first draft of Secrets in the Air in less than two weeks. Please don’t ask me how. I wouldn’t be able to tell you, and it probably wasn’t safe. I was at once elated and exhausted. The boys drowned out the silence.

Is writing a gift? Sort of. I’m certainly grateful for the ability to put words onto the page, and the opportunity to share them with all of you. However, doing it well is not easy. Now, if you’ll excuse me, there are boys knocking at my brain again.

An Excerpt from Secrets in the Air

The wind assaulted Rhett O’Neil’s torso as he drove down Highway 495 on his motorcycle. He had every intention of heading straight home after landing his plane “Betsy,” but when he checked his phone, he found a message from his grandfather asking him to make a quick trip to the estate. What Pop wanted, he got. Rhett hoped they kept it short, because after a week away he would much prefer to make it home for dinner with his husband, who… Shit! I forgot to call Kaden. Before he could correct this grievous error, his phone rang through his Bluetooth helmet. He answered, “I love you.”

Kaden released a breath resonating with relief and exasperation. “Sure you do. I thought you’d be waiting for me after my shift. Isn’t that what we discussed forty-five minutes ago when you finished screwing around with Betsy?”

Rhett laughed. “Checking a faulty engine blade is far from screwing Betsy.”

“You made that unnecessarily dirty.” But Kaden laughed, too, so Rhett concluded it was very necessary.

When their laughs turned to chuckles, Rhett said, “I should have let you know Pop asked me to stop by for something quick. I’m not sure what, though.”

“Please don’t tell him about the engine blade, Rhett. I’d like to see you sometime before my next shift,” Kaden said. He worked as a nurse from seven a.m. to three p.m. at the drug rehab floor of the local hospital.

“Stop. We’re not going to talk all night. Believe me when I tell you, I’d rather be home without clothes on, eating the dinner you promised.”

Kaden quieted on the other end.

“You are making dinner, right?” Rhett clarified.

“Roast beef has been cooking in the crock pot all day. But, see, we’d have to eat it upstairs if you planned to be naked.” Kaden’s voice now held an element of concern.

“Why?” Rhett asked.

“I’ll tell you when you aren’t driving. Be careful on that death trap.”

Rhett never understood why his motorcycle was a death trap, but Betsy provided perfectly acceptable transportation. And then he heard a shriek in the background. “What is that?”

“Lassie,” he answered, concern turned to defeat.

“Doesn’t sound like a dog.”

“It’s a cat. We talked about this. We agreed a cat would be an acceptable pet for our lifestyle,” Kaden reminded him.

Flicking on the blinker, Rhett turned off the exit. He had said that, but he didn’t expect Kaden to go out and get a cat while he was away. “Why did you name it Lassie?”

“Her. And that was her name for the first six months of her life.”

“Fair enough. I’m here, and I won’t stay long. Then you can explain why we have to confine nudity to the bedroom like teenagers,” Rhett said as he leaned over and punched in the security code to open the gate to his grandfather’s estate.

“Tell him I’m making dinner. He’s very concerned about your nutritional intake.”

Rhett drove around the maze that led to the main house. “Yes, but he might invite himself over if I tell him what you’re making.”

“Not if you mention Lassie. I love you. Please call me before you sit on that bike.” Kaden hung up without leaving space for Rhett to protest.

He shook his head and removed his helmet as he dismounted the motorcycle. Rhett paused to stroke the sleek paint job on his red Kawasaki. He didn’t care what Kaden thought, Rhett relished the thrill of riding. Kaden had seen too many fatalities from motorcycle accidents during his ER rotation in nursing school to feel the same. So maybe he did understand, but the peace on the issue was hard-won. Rhett tucked his helmet into the compartment under the seat and strode up to the house. The door swung open and Rhett smiled at Martha, his grandfather’s long-time household manager. “Heard the muffler?” he asked, taking off his coat and handing it to her.

“Your grandfather did. He’s in his study. I left snacks in there for you two.”

Rhett kissed her cheek. “Thank you.” He made his way through the expansive rooms decorated with the best art money could buy. A modern painting stopped him in his tracks. The splash of color and uneven lines contrasted with everything else in house. Rhett dashed to the study, knocked once and opened the slightly ajar door. “Are you going insane, Pop?”

Donald Everett O’Neil sat up, raised his eyebrow and grinned. “Unfortunately, not yet.” He gestured Rhett into the study, which was covered by model planes and pictures of his grandfather posing with the greats of aviation. Rhett was included in quite a few of those, as well. Yet in every one, he stared admiringly at his grandfather, as opposed to the celebrity sharing the shot.

“Unfortunately?” Rhett asked.

“Yes, Everett, sanity can be so taxing in one’s old age. I believe dementia is a self-defense mechanism so we aren’t forced to watch history repeat itself again, while no one heeds our warning,” his grandfather said. “How’d the flight go?”

Rhett shrugged. “No real problems. I’m sure you checked the stats before asking, so you’re well aware.”

Don’s laugh turned to a cough, which he calmed with a few sips of water. “Don’t smoke.”

“You can stop, you know.”

“And you can get rid of the bike, but we all have our vices. I’m old. I deserve to keep mine until it kills me.” Don removed his reading glasses and sat back in his chair. “Which is sort of what I wanted to talk to you about.”

“Smoking?”

“No. Dying.”

Rhett’s jaw dropped and his forehead moistened. “You’re… What’s wrong?”

Don waved him off. “Nothing’s wrong. Not that I know of, anyway. I am sixty-four, and don’t intend to live forever. Actually, I would love to die before asshole politicians run this country further into the ground. But not yet.”

“Pop,” Rhett started, raising his hand, “can you please get to the point?” He loved his grandfather, but he could not handle a rant about the government today.

“When did you get so impatient?”

“I have dinner and a husband at home waiting for me,” he answered.

“Your marriage is good then? You take care of each other?”

Rhett blinked, trying to follow the train of thought. His grandfather, while always supportive, never pried into his love life. “Yes.”

Don nodded. “I knew you would when you first brought him home.” The man’s voice had faded out again as he met Rhett’s eyes. “Your family is the most important ingredient of a happy life. I’m ensuring you have that before we continue this conversation. So, one more time, do you and Kaden have a strong relationship?”

“Yes.”

“That’s what I thought.” Don slid a paper across the desk to Rhett. “What I’m discussing will not make your mother happy. You need to be prepared for that.”

“Yeah, well, she made her choices.” Like to move to California with her husband after they released the asshole from prison. Rhett, at fifteen, had refused to move with them, and Pop adopted him. One of the best days of Rhett’s life was when he took his grandfather’s last name, shedding the otherwise permanent tie to the man who donated his sperm to fertilize his mother’s egg.

Don sighed again. “I wish you’d make peace with her.”

“I have. Mom and I are fine as long as she doesn’t reference the donor. If I don’t have to hear about him, I can pretend she divorced him like she should have. Now, Pop, what isn’t going to make her happy?” Rhett tried to keep his exasperation at bay as he picked at the hummus and pita bread.

“I will get there.”

Thought you wanted to die before the politicians ruined the country? Rhett nodded instead of voicing his thoughts. He’d have to find a way to make the delay up to Kaden later.

“You’re doing a fantastic job with taking on a leadership role in the company. I can tell you love it.”

The corners of Rhett’s mouth lifted. “You knew I would. I’ve worked for you since I was twelve.”

“I knew you loved flying, but that isn’t the same as leading. You’ve gained respect by taking responsibility of all parts of the business,” Don continued.

“That’s how you make sure it’s done right,” Rhett repeated the words his grandfather had told him throughout his childhood.

Don nodded again, wearing a smile of his own. “Everett, there’s something that I haven’t shared with you yet. The company does more than provide flights to wealthy people. We also work with the FBI.”

Rhett snapped his gaze back to his grandfather’s. “You do what? Aren’t they the same people ruining your beloved country?”

“No, I refuse to do business with stupid people. The company assists the rescue division of the FBI, particularly human trafficking cases,” Don said.

“Human trafficking, like the sex trade?”

“Yes, to put it broadly, the FBI tracks cases of girls and young women who go missing. This unfortunately happens every day, but the government pays special attention when the missing girls are of a lower socio-economic class and when the disappearances occur in the same geographic area,” he explained. “They’ve currently zoomed in on several larger organizations. The missions are to apprehend the traffickers and rescue the girls.”

“Are you qualified to help with that?” Rhett asked.

“I’m qualified to fly a plane and keep my mouth shut. The FBI has grown to rely on me, but the truth is I’m not as young as I used to be. Is this something you would be willing to do occasionally?”

Though not sure exactly what he was agreeing to, Rhett nodded.

“Perfect. Now for the part that’ll make your mother unhappy. I’m retiring, and I would like to give you part of your inheritance early, which means in the next few weeks I’ll draw up the paperwork so you and I will share all the assets of the company, in addition to about twenty-five percent of the money I have set aside for you.”

“Thank you, but… why?” Rhett’s head spun at the thought. His grandfather had already provided him with a trust fund that he used to put himself through school and buy Betsy. He finally glanced down at the paper, which detailed the money he would receive and the legalities of the co-ownership.

“Because you’re responsible. I trust you and I’d like to keep the wealth, especially the business, in the family.” His grandfather handed him a signed check, then stood and embraced his grandson. “Be careful on the road.”

After thanking him again, Rhett sent a text to Kaden, ‘Sorry that took so long, but trust me, it was worth it.’

Q&A with J.W. Phillips + Giveaway!

Q&A with J.W. Phillips

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I favor romance with a little smut. Who am I kidding? I favor life with a little smut. I am shy, but loud. I was voted by the other moms at the ball field to be the least likely to get a tattoo. I already had my first tat at the time. I go to church then I rush over to march in a gay pride parade. I am me and even when I annoy myself, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Do you have a favorite spot to write?

My couch with a large glass of Mello Yello and snuggled close to my puppy Mia.

If your book were made into a movie, who do you picture playing each characters part?

They are so ingrained in my mind, it is hard to picture anyone playing them. I truly believe I would want an unknown to play the parts.

Which of your characters would you like to meet in person and why?

Ethan because who wouldn’t want to meet a man like him.

What is the hardest scene you have ever written?

The last one in Innocent Lies. My heart broke for the both of them.

What’s the last book you read?

Hunny Bunny, Funny Bunny to my two year old neighbor.

What’s one random fact about yourself that you can share?

My two middle toes are grown together.

What’s your favorite outside activity?

Outside of writing: watching movies with my kids. Outside in the yard: trying to get back inside.

When can we expect a second book in Dylan and Ethan’s story?

If I can stay out of the hospital, October 1st 2014.

What project are you working on now?

Pretty Little Lies, part two in the story of Ethan and Dylan.

Honorary Blogger Devon McCormack: Why Writing YA is Important to Me + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Why Writing YA is Important to Me

by Devon McCormack

Demons appear to us as black smoke. That’s what you see before they possess you.

The pandemic of demons was contained many years ago, but continual outbreaks are reminders that at any moment they will return and wipe out humanity. Those who were attacked by demons during the pandemic are known as curseds. They’re more likely to become possessed than most, so they are segregated from society and forced to work as slaves for the government.

Luke Retter is sixteen years old. When he was eight, his demon-possessed father killed his mother and sister, gouged out one of his eyes, and severed off one of his hands. Today, Luke works as a janitor for an all-boys Catholic academy. Every day, he watches the other kids his age live normal lives—hanging out, laughing and joking in the halls, and going to school dances. They remind him of what he can never have, of what was so cruelly ripped from him. When he befriends Tom and Zack, two cursed hiding from the system in their own ways, he sees a shimmer of hope—the possibility of happiness in his future. But one night, he wakes to the black smoke and realizes that his troubles are just beginning…

Hideous is my first Young Adult novel, and more importantly, my first gay Young Adult novel. When I was writing the book, it was really important to me to create something that could have appealed to the high school version of myself. I felt a lot of insecurity during those formative years. Aside from the usual cultural stigmas against gays, the absence of representations of gay characters in the books I read and the movies I saw sent a clear message: “This is abnormal and you are not like everyone else.”

My senior year of high school, there was this guy I really liked. His name was Steven, and whenever I thought about him, I got butterflies in my belly and felt prickles in my cheeks. You know, that innocent sort of crush that makes you want to go back in a time machine and stab yourself in the gut. Steven and I were in the drama department. I was a main character in the plays, and he was the lighting guy. He was a goofball. Rail-thin and white as a vampire, he wore these XL button-ups and polos that had the most visually offensive patterns I’ve ever seen in my life. It was incredibly frustrating to find time to talk to him, because when we were working on the play, I was on stage and he was in the lighting booth, which I was forbidden to go into during rehearsals and performances. He was also a junior, and juniors had their own wing in the building, so I rarely ever saw him. There was only one place where we would run into each other in the hall after the last bell, and I made sure to take that route every day, and slow down or speed up accordingly so that I could say “hey” to him as we passed each other. Eventually, I mustered the courage to pull him aside and make small talk.

We had this routine for a while, and during our small talk sessions, we would occasionally just pause and look into each other’s eyes. He would stand there, his green eyes sparkling under the school’s fluorescent lights. It was as if he was waiting for me to make a move. Of course, that could have just been in my head, and at the time, I convinced myself that’s what it was. When prom came around, I fantasized about asking him to go with me. Of course, I couldn’t just ask him. What if he wasn’t gay? What if he told all his friends (some of whom were my friends) and they made fun of me? What if my mom and dad found out?! No, no, no. That wasn’t an option. But I did want to go with him. Everyone else got to take someone that was special to them, so why shouldn’t I?

One afternoon, I pulled him aside. I wanted to say something just to see if he might be interested the way I was, but I really couldn’t figure out a way of going about it that couldn’t result in me being totally outed and humiliated to my friends. I’d planned various approaches, but in the moment, none seemed like they’d work, so I just stuttered through our usual small talk. I didn’t go to prom. That night, I lay in bed, doing homework. Everyone told me that I should go, because I didn’t want to look back and regret missing my senior prom. But I never look back with regret. I look back with disappointment—disappointment that I lived in a world that made me feel so worried and fearful about something that should have been fun and playful, disappointment that I couldn’t enjoy those feelings the way my straight peers were able to.

After senior year ended, my feelings for Steven dissipated, as those early crushes tend to do, and I held on to my secret for several years before grappling with my feelings in my mid-twenties. It’s such a silly story to tell now, because there are more serious issues in life than not asking that one crush to prom. But looking back, I do wish I’d been exposed to more gay stories, to more gay role models—if only so that they could be the representation to let me know that it was okay for me to feel the way that I did, and even if no one around me understood the way I felt…someone…somewhere did. And more than that, to indicate to the straight people around me that we were there and we mattered just as much as they did.

Fortunately, things are getting better. More and more, we’re seeing gay characters appear in mainstream books and movies. This is a wonderful thing, and I hope that this continues until it’s not a big deal or anything noteworthy to see a gay main character in media. I like to believe that one day some kid will pick up my little Young Adult book and see that they aren’t alone, and that it isn’t wrong for them to feel the way they do. Maybe they’ll feel a little more confident in acting on those feelings that they have. Maybe they’ll feel more confident to be who they really are. Even if they aren’t confident enough to act, I hope it gives them relief just knowing they aren’t alone.

About Hideous

1Eight years ago, Luke Retter witnessed the brutal murder of his mother and sister at the hands of his demon-possessed father. He survived but lost a hand and an eye. The demon also burned its emblem into his skin, marking him as a cursed. Those who bear this mark are at risk of becoming possessed themselves, so they are monitored and enslaved by the state-run UCIS. Working as a slave is hard, but Luke prefers it to the possibility of being controlled by a demon.

One night, Luke wakes to find his worst nightmare coming true. His father’s demon has returned. In a panic, he runs to the only person who might be able to help: Zack, a cursed who ran away from the state and created an underground community to protect other fugitive curseds. Zack helps him suppress the demon. But the city’s become a time bomb, and Luke’s demon itches to escape.

With the UCIS closing in on Zack’s underground operation and Luke’s demon crafting its own, nefarious plot, Luke realizes that he must take a stand.

About Devon McCormack

Devon McCormack spent his childhood climbing trees and hopping over gullies in the woods of the Georgian suburbs. Growing up, he found few gay role models in books and movies. This inadequate representation of gay heroes led him to creating his own. He likes dark, action-packed stories in which characters overcome terrible odds and sinister forces. Though his books take place in worlds where paranormal is the norm, his characters triumph over very real problems by using their strength, will, and determination. A huge fan of love stories, he can’t resist throwing in a couple of charming love interests to make the adventures all the more entertaining. He currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and spends his time writing and consuming large quantities of frozen yogurt.

You can reach Devon on his Blog, Twitter or Facebook.
