Leaning Into the Fall by Lane Hayes: Exclusive Deleted Scene & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Deleted Scene from Leaning Into the Fall

by Lane Hayes

No matter how much an author likes a scene, some unfortunately get cut. The extra bits that don’t drive the story may make for fun reading, but sometimes they don’t really belong. I tend to overwrite so there’s always a silly deleted scene or two to share once the “real” book is released. This one belongs to Nick, who readers may remember from my short story, Leaning Into Love, as Eric’s best friend. He’s a quirky intellect who has a hard time communicating. Wes, however, seems to get him. And thus begins Nick’s lean into the ultimate fall.

Happy Reading!

Lane Hayes xo

Deleted Scene:

When Wes pulled into a mini-mall parking lot and steered his SUV toward the giant Target at the end, I was a little less sure.

“What are we doing here?”

“Game shopping. We’ll get a few board games and maybe a couple video games. Do you have a console?”

“No. I only stay at my condo here to shower and sleep,”

Wes gave me a dubious once-over as he led me through the sliding glass doors into the giant retail store. “So you haven’t been there in a while.”

“No. I haven’t. Look, breakfast was fun but I have to get back to work. My secretary will wonder where I am and—”

“No, she won’t. I told her you’d be gone ’til Monday.”

“Barb? No way. Did she believe you?”

“Of course. You were standing right there. Call and ask her.” He pointed toward a sign on his right. “Thataway. Oh wait. We need a cart.”

I dialed my office when Wes backtracked to find a red cart to stuff his goodies in. I moved a few paces behind him, admiring the view while I waited for Barb to answer. When her cell and office phone went directly to voice mail, I stopped called Miles.

“Oh my God, he’s hot!” Miles gushed. “If he wants to play Tarzan and kidnap me too, I won’t complain. No sirree. You don’t have any meetings scheduled and Barb told your engineers you’d be working remotely so you’re good to go, Nicky.”

“Did you really just call me Nicky?”

“That’s what your boyfriend calls you,” he singsonged.

“He’s not my boyfriend,” I hissed.

“Whatever you say. Barb and I can handle things here ’til Eric gets back from Dallas.”

“When does he get in?”

“This afternoon. He has a meeting with the gruesome twosome tomorrow. Don’t worry. Everything is under control. Enjoy yourself. We’ll see you Monday!”

I scowled at my cell when Miles hung up. The mere thought of Finn and Norm darkening the doorway at EN Tech made me anxious to get back to my lab. What the hell was I doing wasting time at a Target? I shoved my phone in my suit pocket and took in my surroundings. I was standing in the middle of a wide aisle in the next to a shelf overburdened with cleaning supplies. Across the way, an employee in a red smock was restacking boxes of shoes. The incongruous sections were delineated throughout the area by the width of the aisle and overhead signage. Baby clothes were next to women’s workout clothes. Dog food was next to kitchen gadgets. If there was a rhyme or reason to the layout, I didn’t get it. I just had to find Wes and get the hell out. I had too much to do to be wandering in a super store emporium like a lost kid.

A pair of sturdy-looking winter boots with a rubber toe and fur lining caught my eye. I picked one up to inspect. It was a size too small. I scanned the boxes and found my size on the lowest shelf. Then I sat on the red metal bench nearby and toed off my loafers before yanking the boots on. The hiked up pant legs on my suit had a clownish look but I liked them. I struck a pose in the full-length mirror against the back wall and gave myself a thumbs up. Cool.

There had to be coats around here too. I put my loafers in the box and trudged into the next section. Women’s bras and pajamas bled into men’s socks and underwear and beyond that, a whole area dedicated to guy stuff. Shirts, shorts, pants, swim trunks…you name it, it was all there. I perused the jackets and tried a few on over my suit coat. The olive green one with puffy sleeves went well the boots. Done. I turned toward the main aisle and gasped in wonder at the Star Wars onesies for grownups. Holy fuck. I had to have it. Wes needed one too. I grabbed two along with matching beanies and resumed my search for the toy aisle.

I found Wes standing in front of a Legos display with his phone glued to his ear. He frowned when he saw me and waved his cell accusingly.

“Where the hell have you been? I’ve been calling you!”

“Looking for you. And shopping. Check out what I got!” I tossed a onesie at him and chuckled at his astounded expression. “One for me, one for you. We don’t have to match. I think there’s a storm trooper one back there but I’m definitely Darth Vader.”

“O-kay…what’s with the winter ensemble, Darth? Do you have any idea how goofy you look?” he snickered, stepping backward to get a good look at me.

“Who cares? I can’t remember the last time I was in one of these stores. They have everything! The pajamas are on me. What else do you want? Name it, I’m buying!”

“Relax, big spender. We aren’t buying the store. We’re looking for a couple games, remember?” Wes pulled my elbow and led me to a row filled with familiar logos of games I played when I was a kid.  “Clue, Sorry…what do you think?”

“I think games are a bad idea.”

“Why? I thought we agreed on this.”

“No. I change my mind. I’m a poor sport. If I lose, it won’t be pretty. We need to rethink this. Board games are a disaster waiting to happen. What other kind of games are there?”

“It’s hard to concentrate with you looking like,” he commented with a grin, grabbing one of the beanie caps and pulling it over my ears.  “Better. Let’s see…there’s outdoor games like badminton, volleyball and Frisbee.”

“My coordination is suspect. I dunno.”

“Anyone can catch a Frisbee. I’m getting one. What else?”

“You said you liked those video games from the 80s, but I don’t where we’d find—”

“An arcade! There’s one in the city by Pier 39. Want to go?”

My ear-to-ear grin was my answer. “Yeah. But take me home first. It looks like I’m really going to play hooky for the first time in my life.” Continue reading

Fox and Birch by Sam Burns: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Fox and Birch

There were three strangers in the front room, and when they approached, even Fletcher’s less sensitive nose picked up the familiar tang of silver in the air. No wonder it had put Wade on edge; he’d almost died of exposure to the stuff less than a month earlier. The fact that he’d willingly walked into a room where he could smell it made Fletcher feel inadequate.

The three men stood spaced far apart, in stances that screamed of false calm. One of them had his jacket open, showing off a shoulder holster. No doubt he’d have the proper concealed carry permit if asked for it.

“Everything okay, Jen?” Wade asked the officer on desk duty. She was the newest member of the local force, so she tended to get the duty no one else wanted. She was also the one who usually complained that they needed a new coffee maker, since she had to deal with it most often. Fletcher was more than willing to back her on it, but the sheriff tended to be a little slow to accept changes, even unimportant ones.

She turned and looked at Wade, a pinched frown on her lips. “These guys are bounty hunters,” she told him, in a tone that said she thought they were at least as bad as whatever criminals they might be hunting.

Wade quirked an eyebrow and looked over at the guys—who Fletcher didn’t believe for a second were bounty hunters. Hell, they had one guy standing lookout in the doorway, his back to them so that he could see anyone coming in. Wade was calm, though. The corner of his mouth turned up, and he looked every inch the arrogant small-town cop that he often played. He was scarily good at it and even fooled locals sometimes.

“And what would ‘bounty hunters’ be doing in our tiny town? Has there been a prison break I don’t know about?” Wade’s tone said he thought the men were idiots for even making the drive to Rowan Harbor, and Fletcher had seen people break under that stare. He had a feeling these guys weren’t going to be that easy.

The man who had been leaning across the front counter—the one whose gun was on display—looked Wade over and rolled his eyes. “This is just the kind of place people go to hide, kid. Middle of nowhere, no media attention, tiny police force who aren’t expecting trouble.”

Wade’s smile went wolfish. “Only trouble I’ve seen in this town in a while is standing right in front of me. You looking for someone in particular, or just thought you’d show up, hang out, and wait for something to happen?”

That seemed to get under the guy’s skin a little. “We’re looking for a dangerous criminal. A murderer. We only came here as a courtesy to the local police, and I suggest you steer clear of our work. Wouldn’t want you to have to deal with real trouble.”

The guy with his back to them snorted loudly, and something in Fletcher’s stomach curled in sick anticipation. He stared at the back of the man’s head.

Wade, meanwhile, was on a roll. “Any particular reason you think a murderer is hanging out in Rowan Harbor?”

“There was a report of two people being attacked last month, and no arrest made,” the man said, his tone smug.

“So you think a murderer turned up in the Harbor, tried to kill someone, and then what, stopped feeling murderous? We didn’t find the culprit because he left town. They found his abandoned car on the road halfway between here and Portland. You think he dropped it off and walked back?”

The truth was that they had driven it there and abandoned it after scrubbing it for any kind of evidence. They hadn’t wanted it tracked back to Rowan Harbor, dammit.

“But he was a blond guy? Short? Pale?” the other man, who had previously been silent, asked. He was younger than the man at the counter and looked concerned and earnest.

“Yeah,” Wade agreed. “Came into the bar one evening, said his name was Sol White. We think he attacked one person that night, but no one saw anything, including the victim. Then a few days later, he attacked a guy on the pier. We impounded the car, but someone broke the lock on our lot and stole it. Car turned up a few days later, and nothing exciting has happened since. Your murderer has moved on, gentlemen.” Wade leaned an arm on the counter, standing between Fletcher and the men, and halfway between them and Jen, and smiled. “Then there’s the fact that I ran the name through our database, and we didn’t turn up any hits for crimes committed by a man fitting the name and description.”

“He’s got a couple of aliases,” concerned guy said. It was strange, but if he hadn’t known what they were, Fletcher would have thought the guy was serious.

Fletcher had seen their kind before. The tactics, the attitude, and the smell marked them as clearly as if they’d worn signs. They liked to call themselves “hunters” or some such crap, but Fletcher knew a killer when he met one. These men hunted and murdered supernatural creatures. Looking back at the man in the door, he knew without doubt that these men were killers. That smell of barely contained body odor, bad breath, silver, and cigarette smoke was so familiar that it almost brought tears to his eyes.

The guy turned to look at him and flashed a smile. Recognition hit Fletcher head-on. For a second, he felt the panic of a fourteen-year-old child, the child he’d been when he’d first seen that smile, but there was no recognition there. The guy wasn’t taunting him; he was just being an asshole.

He didn’t know that he had murdered Fletcher’s mother.

Exclusive Excerpt from Unraveled

by K.M. Neuhold

“Nobody’s knocked up,” I grumble. “And nobody’s gonna get knocked up because I’m dating Clay.”

Stunned silence is about what I expected, and my brothers don’t disappoint. I chance a look at them and find them both gaping at me like I’ve grown an extra head.

“You’re shitting us,” Tony guesses weakly.

“Nope.” I shake my head and square my shoulders to prepare for the inevitable onslaught that’ll come as soon as they realize what I’m telling them.

“You’re a queer?” Gio asks with quiet confusion.

The word isn’t said with venom, so I keep my own tone even when I answer. “I told you not to use that word, Gio.”

“Okay, but are you?”

“I don’t really know,” I admit. “I still like women, and I like Clay.” I shrug.

“But he’s a guy,” Tony points out, making me chuckle.

“Yeah, I noticed that.”

“I don’t get it,” Gio admits.

“Okay, it’s like, imagine if someone gave you a fully restored 1963 Corvette Stingray Split Window Coupe but instead of being red like you always pictured, it was black. Would you send it back?” Gio and Tony both shake their head at the sacrilegious idea. “That’s exactly what this is like. Clay is everything I ever wanted. He’s everything I was missing in every woman I ever dated. Did I expect my soulmate to have a dick? No. But, hell, my own was always fun enough to play with; now, I’ve got a spare.”

Gio cracks a smile, and Tony still looks bewildered, but I can tell my words registered on some level.

“I guess that makes sense,” Gio admits.

I breathe a sigh of relief and pull my brother into a hug. Gio squeezes back and claps me on the back.

When I release him, I turn to Tony, weary of what I might find there.

“As long as you don’t tell me what you two do in bed, I can live with it,” Tony concedes.

I roll my eyes at him. “Dude, like I want to tell you about my sex life anyway. You’re the one who thinks everyone needs a play by play.”

Tony chuckles. “That’s fair,” he agrees, and then he opens his arms for a hug too.

Once the Kumbaya moment is over, the three of us head inside for dinner.

Clay is in the middle of helping my mom put the finishing touches on some sort of chocolate dessert, and he raises an eyebrow in question as soon as he sees me.

With my brothers right behind me, I stride over to Clay and pull him into a kiss, letting my tongue sweep briefly into his mouth.

“Mmm, you taste like chocolate,” I note, bumping my nose against Clay’s in an affectionate gesture.

“You taste like giant, sexy man,” Clay teases.

“Get a room,” Gio complains, and Tony chuckles.

My dad comes over and claps me on the shoulder without comment. I guess my mom decided to take one thing off my plate for me after all. We all sit down around the table and Ma fills our plates.

Character Interview with Oisin Harrison and Trenton Fisher from Waking Oisin by Grace Kilian Delaney + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Character_Interview copy

Hi everyone! I’m excited to be here at The Blogger Girls celebrating my new release Waking Oisin. In Waking Oisin, both characters discover what they once held important is no longer working in their lives. As they face this realization, they struggle to find romance and their happy for now ending.

Interview with Oisin Harrison and Trenton Fisher

Grace Kilian Delany: Hi guys and thanks for answering some questions today.

Oisin Harrison: Always happy to help out.

Trent Fisher: (turns to Oisin) You’re so sweet. (To GKD) Thanks for having us here.

GKD: Oisin, first off, can you tell everyone about your unique name and how it’s pronounced?

Oisin: Sure thing. And no one says it right, so… It’s pronounced kinda like ocean, only Oh-sheen. There’s some funky accent on the second i in Gaelic, which leads to the origin of my name. It comes from the Irish myth of Oisín and the Land of Eternal Youth. Mom liked the name, but the myth? It’s really sad. I won’t spoil it for anyone who wants to read it. It’s on YouTube, too. Such a sad ending.

GKD: Good thing you got your happy ending.

Trent: I’d say he got his happy ending.

Oisin: (blushing) Rude!

GKD: You had to go there? Anyway. Let’s dive into some other questions. Now that you’ve gotten some time together, what are some issues that have come up that you hadn’t expected?

Trent: That’s easy. This man hogs all the blankets.

Oisin: I do not.

Trent: You do too. He pulls them off me and then wraps himself in them like a cocoon. And then the dog! I love Maggie, but she likes to climb in the bed so I’ve got no blanket and a big black lab curled up next to me instead of my sexy boyfriend.

GKD: Sounds like grounds for couple’s therapy. Got anything to say to that Oisin?

Oisin: Nope. Trent is perfect in every way. There’s not anything at all that I (bursts out in laughter) Okay, so that’s not true. He has this weird thing about food. The meat—and don’t get me started on the fact he eats meat—has to go at the bottom of the plate and the carbs and veggie on the top. I guess it’s not a major issue, but just something I hadn’t expected.

GKD: That leads me to my next question. Both are you are animal lovers. Trent, your sisters own a veterinary clinic in Las Vegas, and Oisin you’re an animal activist and studying to become a veterinarian. Do you have any advice for people who are looking to adopt?

Trent: Let me add a disclaimer that none of us, including this wonderful blog site, endorses any particular organization before we get into that answer.

Oisin: Always the lawyer…

Trent: According to ASPCA, over 3.6 million animals enter animal shelters every year in the US. I understand that adopting a shelter animal can be intimidating for some, and if that’s the case, turn to rescue groups. The volunteers at good rescue group will be able to give you a feel for the animal’s disposition and help you determine if you and the animal are a good match.

Oisin: And look into pet insurance when you get your pet. Or if you are having a hard time paying vet bills, there are organizations that help people do that so you can keep your baby healthy.

GKD: Thank you guys and best to the both of you! I’m sure we’ll be chatting again soon. Continue reading
