Exclusive Excerpt from Magic & Mirrors

by L.M. Brown

Lucius gazed down at the still blindfolded Harry and smiled. He wondered when he had become so attached to his would-be assassin. Even though he had given his word not to bring up Harry’s profession, he had to ask the question that had been tormenting him for days.

“Harry, would you ever consider giving up your life of crime?”

Harry raised his hand towards the blindfold, but Lucius stopped him. “Leave it, you’re less jumpy when you can’t see me, or rather not see me.”

“I don’t mean to be,” Harry said. “It’s just odd to only see you in mirrors.”

“I suppose it must be. Are you going to answer my question?”

Harry sighed. “I’m not trained to do anything else. If I don’t earn my keep as an assassin, I’ll starve.”

“You could learn a trade,” Lucius suggested. “An honest one.”

He didn’t know why he was pushing the issue when it was clear that Harry was perfectly content to continue on his current path. Perhaps it was because he could see the good in the man whose bed he currently shared, and he didn’t want to see his life end on the scaffold.

While he had promised to pardon him for all his crimes, he had no doubt that without other options, Harry would soon commit more and he would come to a sticky end. That was the last thing Lucius wanted. He had got to know Harry during their journey and he liked him more than anyone else he had ever met.

“Or I could offer you a position in my kingdom, once I get it back again.”

Harry snorted. “Doing what?”

Lucius thought of Prince Aiden and Robert. It was clear that even though Robert was a commoner, he had found a place in the royal household and was respected and happy with his husband. Lucius knew better than to raise with Harry any suggestion of a similar arrangement for the two of them. It was far too soon to think of marriage. Yet the words were out of his mouth before good sense could stop them.

“We could wed.”

Lucius didn’t know what he had expected Harry’s reaction to be, especially since he hadn’t thought this through at all. He would have hoped for something better than gales of laughter.

“I mean after I escape from the mirror world and get my life back in order,” he clarified. “And I’d have to sort out the legalities regarding my other marriage, but I’m sure that can be resolved.”

Harry continued to chuckle and shake his head. He even took off the blindfold to wipe away his tears of mirth.

“It wasn’t that funny,” Lucius muttered.

“Oh it is,” Harry replied with another guffaw. “Can you even imagine the looks on the faces of your people if you announced your marriage to a man hired to assassinate you? They’d lock you away before you could rustle up a priest.”

“Well, I wouldn’t draw attention to your former career.”

“You mean my current career?”

“I know what I meant. You wouldn’t be an assassin if you married me.”

Harry sat up, dislodging Lucius from where he rested against him. “I’ll always be an assassin. My face is on wanted posters, and you know as well as I do that the ceremony wouldn’t make it past the does-anyone-object part.”

Finding Trix by L.M. Brown: Exclusive Excerpt!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Finding Trix

by L.M. Brown

Trix wasn’t the least bit surprised to find that the rest of the felines on the Pleasure Station were as furious as he was to find themselves homeless.

Brak, who had never been shy about holding back his opinions, stood in the middle of the dock, shouting abuse at the humans as they urged everyone onto the waiting ships. “Fucking arrogant humans, coming in here and telling us how to live our lives. If they had to survive on cream and milk they wouldn’t be so quick to judge us. They’re turning us out of our homes to starve.”

Even though he had never liked Brak, he couldn’t help agreeing with his assessment of their situation. Too many space stations had no feeding felines policies and many species were in the process of outlawing prostitution as well.

A group of avians who had clearly been visiting the station stood near their ship, listening to Brak rant. One of them drew away from the rest and approached them. “We’ve got room on board for three of you.”

“Payment?” Brak asked.

“As much cream as you want.”

“And credits?”

The avian laughed. “What do you need those for?”

“Clothes, travel expenses.”

“You’ll be travelling with us, and as for clothes, you’re hardly going to need those. We prefer our felines to be naked.”

Trix stepped forward. “I’ll come with you.” The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them.

Brak gave him a nasty sneer. “These avians clearly prefer cocks, not pussy.”

The avian shot Trix a sharp look. “You’re dual-gendered?”

Trix hung his head. “Yes.”

A second avian approached. “I’ve never fucked one of those before. Let him come.”

Trix considered that at least there was no longer any danger of pregnancy for him. It was already too late for that. He grabbed his trunk and dragged it over to the ramp.

“Is this all your stuff?” the second avian asked.

Trix glanced at the ship. “Do you have room for more?”

“Sure.”

“I’ll go fetch the rest.” He hurried back to his rooms and gathered together all of his pillows in a sheet with the corners tied together. Fearful that they would leave without him, he raced back with his load, and boarded the ship.

He found Brak on board along with a third feline, a female named Cheri.

“Got everything?” the avian asked.

“Yes,” Trix confirmed.

“Your room is on the lower level at the far end of the corridor. The three of you are sharing.”

Trix wasn’t surprised, but Cheri appeared disappointed. Brak was apparently too busy flirting with the pilot to notice.

With his pillows in his arms, Trix clambered down to the lower level in search of some peace and quiet. He realised, as he put together a cosy nest in the corner that he hadn’t even asked the names of his hosts.

Cheri came into the room behind him. “You avoiding Furyne because you’re dual-gendered too?”

“Yes, you?”

“Yes.”

Trix smiled at Cheri. “The avians seem to find us something of a novelty.”

Cheri flopped onto one of the beds—at least there were three of them crammed into the room—and rested her head on her hands. “I hope they aren’t expecting much action from my cock. I took the supplements once or twice to see how they worked, but quite frankly I’ve no interest in taking them again. I don’t know how you male dominants put up with the damn things, always getting hard at entirely the wrong moment.”

Trix chuckled. “Do you have any supplements on you?”

“No.”

“Then you probably don’t need to worry about it. I doubt our hosts know enough about us to realise that female dominants need to take them to get an erection.”

Trix curled up on his pillows and closed his eyes. A rumble came from behind him and the ship lifted for take-off. “Any idea where we’re going?”

“No. Does it matter?”

“I guess not.”

Reliant on Lyndon for the cream he needs to survive, Jax does everything he can to keep him happy and he lives for the day when he will be reunited with his children.

When Jax discovers he is pregnant for a second time, he is terrified his second litter will be taken from him, too.

Ty is a dual-gendered feline who dreams of carrying his own babies one day. If they are fathered by Cal, the sexy feline he feeds from, it would be even better. Ty’s parents have other ideas. They don’t wish the public to know that their high-born son is dual-gendered, and arrange for a mating festival to take place so Ty can choose a dual-gendered mate of his own.

Although Ty has no intention of submitting to his parents’ wishes, something about Jax draws Ty to him and when he and Cal discover Jax’s secret, they know they must help.

Ty and Cal offer Jax a way to escape Lyndon’s clutches, but Jax knows almost nothing about the two felines who have offered to claim him.

Ty sat on one of the wing-backed chairs near the fireplace and gestured for Cal to take the other. “You can tell me anything you wish. I will keep any confidence you wish me to. I know you don’t see us as anything other than master and servant, but I hope you know you can at least trust me.”

Cal wouldn’t meet his eyes. “I think one of the felines might be in trouble.”

“What sort of trouble?”

“I’m not sure. Maybe I’m wrong, but my instincts are telling me I’m right.”

“Felines should always trust their instincts,” Ty said. “Who is it you’re worried about?”

“The pure white with the blue eyes. Jax.”

“Ah.”

Cal shot him a quick glance from under his lashes. “You remember him then?”

“Yes, of course. He stood out from the rest of them like a beacon in the dark.”

“He’s not a virgin,” Cal blurted.

Ty smiled. “So I noticed. I’m surprised no one else did, actually, but they probably weren’t looking that closely.”

“What do you mean?” Cal asked. “You only saw him when he was presented to you and I’m sure you weren’t outside when I saw them together.”

“You saw who together?”

“Jax and his lover. I think he called him Lyndon. They were having sex just outside the side door from the servants’ quarters.”

“I see.” That Jax had a lover already meant Ty’s plans would have to be reconsidered. He wondered how Orin had failed to notice his nephew was already spoken for. Surely if he was in an established relationship his lover would have claimed him at some point?

“How did you know he wasn’t a virgin?” Cal asked.

“Hmm?” Ty dragged his attention back to the conversation. “Oh, when he was presenting himself for examination. He was far too stretched and tender to have been untouched. He’d been fucked hard and recently. Now I know where.”

Cal shook his head. “I saw him in the gardens after he’d been presented to you.”

Ty shrugged. “Well, I guess I’ll have to see which of the others might be amenable to mating with me. I have no wish to poach Jax from his lover. I thank you for telling me of your concerns.”

Cal leaned forward, his arms on his legs. “Don’t discount Jax too quickly. Like I said, I think he’s in some kind of trouble.”

Ty recalled Cal had said that, but he had assumed he meant that Jax was playing with fire by claiming to be a virgin when he was clearly not. “What makes you think so?”

Cal lowered his voice to little more than a whisper. “They had sex and Jax seemed to be a willing participant, but when they were done and Lyndon was walking away, the look on Jax’s face was not that of a feline looking at the man he loves. There was pure hatred in his eyes.”

“Are you sure? I mean are you sure he was willing? He wasn’t forced?”

Cal seemed to give the question serious thought. “No, he was enjoying himself and he wasn’t fighting him off. He seemed more angry with what Lyndon had said to him.”

“Which was?”

“Enough to make me offended on Jax’s behalf,” Cal muttered. “He didn’t seem to care if he got Jax pregnant, he called him a slut, oh and he was pretty adamant that while Jax should put on a good show of trying to win your favour, he wasn’t to do so good a job that you claim him.”

Ty didn’t like the idea of anyone manipulating him, and even though he had never met this Lyndon feline, he already hated him with a passion.

“Thank you for telling me this,” Ty said. “But can I ask you a question before you go back to your duties?”

“Of course.”

“If I were to choose Jax as a mate, would you care at all?”

The fleeting expressions of shock, hurt and resignation, told Ty far more than Cal’s polite assurance that it was none of his business who Ty chose to mate with. Ty needed to continue his bloodline and therefore he had to choose from one of the candidates who had been presented to him today.

Ty decided to ignore the words and focus on the truth he saw in Cal’s eyes instead.

Exclusive Excerpt from Hidden Depths

Jake had no idea what to do as everyone craned to see what Doug was shouting about.

“Mermen?” Bill asked. “Is Kyle in the water already? Good lad.”

Jake doubted he would be so delighted when he discovered Kyle’s custom-made tail was still in the changing room.

Natalie grabbed Jake’s arm and pulled him away from the crowd. “Is it true?”

Jake rolled his eyes. “Doug’s just playing along for the show.”

Natalie snorted. “Doug barely pulls his weight at work. I doubt he’d do anything of the sort. Now, tell me the truth.”

Jake gave a small nod.

“I knewKyle was holding his breath too long for a human when he swam in the tank. He almost beat the world record and he didn’t seem to be struggling at that.”

“Can you help them?” Jake asked.

“By doing what?” Natalie replied. “This is a great opportunity for us.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, until now, we’ve had Kyle playing the part of a merman, complete with his fake fins. Now we can show the world real mermen. Imagine how many visitors we’ll have when word gets out.”

Jake glared at the woman he had foolishly trusted with his lovers’ secret. He put it down to his panic and hoped he could repair the damage. “Kyle and Finn are notexhibits in your aquarium.”

“I don’t think you’re seeing the possibilities.”

Jake pushed her aside and ran to the far end of the boat. Thankfully, she didn’t follow. “Medina!” he screamed, hoping she heard him at such a vital moment.

The goddess appeared before him and smiled. “What has you so frantic?”

“Kyle and Finn are exposed.” Jake pointed at the crowd behind him. “You have to do something. Please, can you wipe everyone’s memories or something?”

Medina frowned. “I don’t have that sort of power, not anymore anyway.”

“What do you mean?”

“Before the Atlanteans were banished, I could have done what you ask. I had priests, devoted to me and me alone, and their loyalty fed my powers. Now I am but a shadow of the goddess I used to be.”

“Isn’t there anything you can do?”

Medina shook her head and Jake’s heart fell.

“Wait… There might be one way,” Medina said. “You could become my priest.”

“But Kyle and Finn… I can’t leave them. They need me.”

“Of course they do. Becoming my priest isn’t like your modern kind. You can stay with your lovers and carry on as before. You’ll just be something more than you are now.”

“More?”

“Those powers you struggle to deal with would be amplified,” Medina explained. “And you’ll have to make an offering at one of my temples. A proper offering, not perfume and flowers.”

“What sort of offering?”

“You’ll need to prove you know what love is.”

“That’s all?”

Medina smiled. “It might sound easy, but I think you’ll find it harder than you think. So, Jake, do you accept my offer?”

“And if I do, you’ll be able to undo what’s happened?”

“Faster than you can blink.”

“Then I accept.”

Technology – The Bane of Our Lives

by L.M. Brown

Technology is great, when it’s working properly, but when it goes wrong it can be a frustrating nightmare.  We’ve all been there.  An operating system update that stops our favourite program working correctly, a frozen screen when you haven’t yet saved that amazing scene you just wrote, or even worse the Blue Screen of Death that appears in a flash and signals that your computer has some serious problem that, if you’re like me, you have no clue how to fix.

Technology today does things that most people couldn’t even imagine thirty or so years ago.  So imagine what it might be able to do in another hundred years.

That is part of the concept behind Holographic Havoc.  The story is set in the near future where inventions are becoming more and more complex and are able to do even more than they do now.  I set the story 2102, though considering how quickly our technology evolves, it may be that the invention that the story revolves around is something that is not only around, but already obsolete by the time that year arrives.  Not that I am going to be around to see it any event.

So, what is this invention I am talking about?

Well, it is a holographic personal assistant that is designed to help the user in all aspects of their life. Whether it is organising meetings, booking a restaurant, doing your shopping, or maintaining a good relationship with the mother-in-law, this fictional invention is there to help.

Amazing right?

But what about when that piece of technology decides to go wrong?   After all, the more complicated the program, the more likely it is to have bugs that are designed to drive a person completely insane.

I hope you enjoy reading about what happens when Hayden’s holographic assistant develops an unexpected bug.

Feel free to share your own techie horror stories here – we all have them and it sure is nice to know we are not alone when we’re screaming at our computers to just work!

About Holographic Havoc

Hayden Knight’s job is simple. All he has to do is sell his father’s latest invention to Tate South, the Acquisitions Manager of the biggest supplier of the best in cutting-edge technology. The virtual assistant is designed to help the user in all aspects of their life, but Hayden views the holographic helper as nothing but a nuisance. Keeping his annoyance to himself is relatively easy until a major technical glitch causes Tate to see and hear Hayden’s assistant.

Hayden and Tate are thrown together while they try to figure out what has happened, and the chemistry between them is electric. Hayden soon finds that convincing Tate that he needs a Holo-Assistant isn’t as important to him as persuading him he needs Hayden in his life.

The attraction is mutual and the sparks fly. If only they could get rid of their holographic third wheel.

After picking up Hayden’s car, a self-driving sporty model that was as comfortable as it was sleek, they settled in for the journey, with Randy hovering in the back seat.

“What sort of information can the assistant access about individuals? About me?”

“Anything that’s public knowledge.”

“Care to demonstrate?”

“Randy, please tell me everything you know about Tate.”

“Tate South, aged twenty seven, date of birth 6th May 2075. Owner of ED Electronics and Head of Acquisitions.”

“What about personal stuff?” Tate interrupted.

“Personal?” Hayden asked.

“My name, age, job, and stuff like that is all public record. What else can it find out?”

“Randy, personal profile of Tate please.”

“Tate South, single, currently ranked as number ninety in the top one hundred most eligible bachelors in England. Sexual orientation—gay. Sexual health status—clean. Last long term relationship was between February 2097 and October 2100. Infrequent user of gay hook-up app—” Continue reading
