Q&A with J.W. Phillips + Giveaway!

Q&A with J.W. Phillips

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

I favor romance with a little smut. Who am I kidding? I favor life with a little smut. I am shy, but loud. I was voted by the other moms at the ball field to be the least likely to get a tattoo. I already had my first tat at the time. I go to church then I rush over to march in a gay pride parade. I am me and even when I annoy myself, I wouldn’t change a thing.

Do you have a favorite spot to write?

My couch with a large glass of Mello Yello and snuggled close to my puppy Mia.

If your book were made into a movie, who do you picture playing each characters part?

They are so ingrained in my mind, it is hard to picture anyone playing them. I truly believe I would want an unknown to play the parts.

Which of your characters would you like to meet in person and why?

Ethan because who wouldn’t want to meet a man like him.

What is the hardest scene you have ever written?

The last one in Innocent Lies. My heart broke for the both of them.

What’s the last book you read?

Hunny Bunny, Funny Bunny to my two year old neighbor.

What’s one random fact about yourself that you can share?

My two middle toes are grown together.

What’s your favorite outside activity?

Outside of writing: watching movies with my kids. Outside in the yard: trying to get back inside.

When can we expect a second book in Dylan and Ethan’s story?

If I can stay out of the hospital, October 1st 2014.

What project are you working on now?

Pretty Little Lies, part two in the story of Ethan and Dylan.

Honorary Blogger Megan Derr: Close to Home + Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Close to Home

by Megan Derr

I don’t write contemporary very often. It is usually more fun for me to make things up entirely than stick to an established world where I’m forced to abide by certain rules and limits (although I often ignore them anyway, for better or worse).

When I do write contemporary, without any sort of paranormal or fantasy frill to it, 99% of the time it’s by request or for a specific person. Looking for More was written primarily with Samantha in mind. She is my sister, EIC for Less Than Three, and has been editing my stories for nearly as long as I’ve been writing them. And she wanted a story about a gamer geek.

That particular element did not play as big a role as I had initially wanted, but this was good practice for the hardcore gamer story I do intend to write for her. Amusingly, Samantha was also my consultant for those elements of the story. I am not a gamer anymore, have not been for years, and the gaming world now is not even close to how it was when I left. If I got anything right in LFM, it’s thanks to Samantha, and anything wrong is on me.

I pulled a lot of elements from my own life, and my family, though I didn’t set out to do that. Milo’s job as a foot runner was my job for a few years when I lived in Cincinnati. The way he got smacked in the face with a door came from similar such encounter I had. People fling doors open all the time, and you kind of learn to watch out for that. Knowing the receptionists and other couriers and delivery people—that is very much true. Asshole bosses that make you run all the way across town ten minutes before everything closes is also very true -_- I never got to include all the crazy people you run into on the streets in a job like that.

The broken nose is perhaps the funniest story. That was stolen from my father, who I called to ask about having a nose broken because I have not yet managed to do it myself, but he’d had his broken seven times. That turned into a two hour conversation where I mostly laughed at his pain like the jerk daughter I am (I really really am. I don’t remember how old I was when it happened, but the short version is that my dad’s left middle finger got torn off. When he came home from the hospital, I held up my hand and asked him how many fingers it was. He said five. I said no, he couldn’t do five anymore. In my defense I am a product of my smartass environment). So my father told me all about his broken noses, and I pieced together Milo’s fate from those.

My parents are my consultants for many things, since they have pretty kickass histories themselves that I am happy to borrow/steal :3 Although I’m pretty sure all the questions about murder and death and bodies have put my father and I on the watchlists. Whatever, stories have to get written.

Milo’s love of sour candy came from me. His love of stouts I stole from Sasha. I added some Doctor Who mentions because my sisters have dragged me into the fandom with them (I’m going to cosplay as Rose at Yaoicon this year :D).

I think the point of all this rambling is that while write what you know is often the dumbest advice to give someone, there are times where it can be a lot of fun to write what you know, or shamelessly steal what your family knows.

So it might not be the most involved or complex story I’ve written, but I am fond of it and I hope the peeps that have read it have enjoyed it, too.

Much love to everyone who has stopped by. Hearts and thanks to the Blogger Girls for having me, and I hope everyone is having a lovely week.

~Meg

About Looking for More

22233854Milo has a pretty good life: nice house, decent job, plenty of time to devote to the movies and games he loves. He also has a hot neighbor, Lewis, who frequently comes by to drag Milo out of his house. If Milo wishes they were more than neighbors, well, he’s working on it.

Then Lewis asks Milo for advice on how to catch the notice of a geek—a man that is everything Milo is not, a man who turns his life into a living hell and makes it painfully clear that Lewis will never see him as anything but the nerd across the street.

Honorary Blogger Brina Brady: Brina’s Writing Process + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Brina’s Writing Process

by Brina Brady

My writing process begins with two characters and then I add more. I fill out a thorough character chart for each. I create in Scrivener because I am able to have pictures of my characters while I type. From this point, I begin writing and have my characters talk to each other. My first draft is dialogue with sparse settings and descriptions. For some reason, I like to focus on 3000 words at a time. I will work it for a week until the skeleton grows some flesh. During this process, I add more action and beats to the tags. The description is more detailed, sometimes too much then later needs cutting.

In Rent Me, I did extensive research on the Russian culture and Russian mobsters located in California. I know California since I lived there. I wanted to make sure Dmitri reacted to his oppressive culture and grew from it. He was suppressed as a child because in Russia you can’t be openly gay. This caused problems for him because he was in love with Brennen, but he married Nika to appease his family and friends. I like to create conflict in each chapter.

I researched rent boys on Twitter to see why they liked their job. Another great resource for me was Tumblr. The pictures fused my imagination for sex scenes. I also investigated some pictures and videos on some Gay sites to get ideas. That was the fun part of researching.

One day I sat down and thought about a backstory for Brennen. Where did he come from? How did he meet Dmitri?

As time went on, I added layers to each chapter. I took many writing classes from Romance Writers of America. I found out I needed some hooks so I added them in later. I joined writing groups and listened to what my beta readers suggested and having a great editor helps, too.

My writing begins in my head and my characters demand time on my screen. I allow them to do as they will for the most part. A couple of times, both Dmitri and Brennen were out of control so I had to rein them in.

Currently, I am working on my new novel Bent Over but the sequel to Rent Me is also in process due to the demands of Brennen and Dmitri. I love writing and will never stop.

About Rent Me

Rent Boy Brennen wants to belong to his lover Dmitri Dubrovsky. The Russian mobster controls every inch of his life in and out of bed. Brennen works for Dmitri’s escort service. His only desire is to please his lover. When Dmitri marries Nika, his lover moves him out of their home to an apartment in Beverly Hills and tells him nothing has changed. What is Brennen going to do now?

This is a Gay adult consensual story focused on themes of corporal discipline punishment and explicit sex with some elements of BDSM between adult men over the age of eighteen.

An Excerpt from Rent Me

Dmitri pounded his fists on the table and said, “Now, you are being disrespectful to me.”

“Well, you are siding with all our enemies.”

“What the hell are you talking about? You are under my protection and in exchange, I asked you to respect me. And if you disrespect me, I am in charge of the consequences. You agreed to this. Do you remember our written agreement?”

“Yes, I remember. Sorry if I was disrespectful, but I feel you don’t treat me like an adult.”

“Sorry is not good enough this time. For your punishment, you have three choices. Your first choice is to quit being an escort. Your second choice is for me to take you back to Adrik. Your third choice is to give your consent to be whipped with my belt and it won’t be play discipline.”

“I can’t believe you want to bring me back to Adrik.” Brennen shook his head. “I’m not quitting my job. Especially now since you are married. And you are not going to punish me with a belt. You’re my boyfriend.”

Dmitri got up from the table, picked up the red apple timer on the stovetop, and set it down in front of Brennen. When he had gotten into trouble, Dmitri and Mischa used the timer for time-outs. The timer was their way of giving him some quiet space to think about what he had done wrong.

“Why a belt? Brennen looked up at Dmitri.

“Did you think I would discipline you with our play paddle?”

“But Adrik used to hit me with a belt.” He was annoyed at his own whining voice.

“It’s punishment. Quit your damn escort job, then.”

“I can’t believe you are doing this to me,” Brennen said.

“You have twenty minutes to decide which punishment you want. You only have three choices, but if you don’t accept any of the choices, then you are choosing to walk away from me as your lover.”

“You don’t mean this, do you?” Brennen asked.

“Have you ever known me to lie to you?”

“No.”

“I will always take care of you, but you will no longer be my lover if you don’t choose one of the three punishments. Our relationship is based on me being the top man who makes the rules and you are the bottom man who follows the rules. You knew this when we became lovers.”

Dmitri set the apple timer. “You have twenty minutes to decide.” He left him alone in the kitchen with the red ticking frying pan clock.

Why was he doing this?

Brennen knew Dmitri could force him back to Adrik. But even if he made him go there, he would probably be able to run away. He did not want to take any chances. No, that was not an option, and Dmitri knew that.

Dmitri playing God again.

This was all about Dmitri forcing him to quit the escort job at the agency. Brennen was not going to quit his job. He loved it, and it made him feel good about himself. But to walk away from Dmitri as his lover was not what he wanted either. The only thing left was to give consent to be punished with the belt. How hard would he hit him? The timer continued to tick along with the clock on the wall. His nerves went to hell.

Dmitri entered the kitchen as the timer buzzed. Brennen covered his ears and slapped it. He picked the apple timer up and returned it to its proper place.

“What have you decided?” Dmitri asked.

Honorary Blogger A.M. Sexton: Release Inspirational Photos + Giveaway

Inspirational Photos for RELEASE

by A.M. Sexton

I was a bit alarmed when I realized I was supposed to do a picture post for this blog tour, because in truth, I didn’t start out with many pictures at all. But once I started looking… well, who can complain about an excuse to browse Tumblr, right?

First and foremost, I had exactly ONE inspirational picture for this book that I found way back at the beginning, and it was vitally important to me. For months, it was the wallpaper on my laptop. But it wasn’t of any of the characters. It was of the city. This picture helped inspire the tone of both  (which readers will see in the second book).

the city

Inspiration for Davlova and Deliphine

Miguel Donato wasn’t too hard to find. I found lots of pictures that could work, but this one was my favorite.

The site I found it on said it was David Gandy, but… does that look like Gandy to you?

Anyway…

Finding pictures of Ayo was problematic because even though Ayo is technically an adult, he’s been genetically engineered and manipulated to look far younger than he is. I didn’t want to go looking for pictures of fourteen year old boys because… eww. But, I think this picture captures a lot of Ayo’s vulnerability and his innocence. (And the hair is just about right, too!)  The second picture is more what Ayo will look like later in life.

Of course, that leaves my main character, Misha.  Initially, I had no pictures at all of Misha, but when I started this post and started really LOOKING, I found a few really good ones. I think the third one  is by far my favorite, even though his hair is wrong. Something about his eyes just really feels right.

About Release

Release (Davlova, #1)Davlova: a poverty-ridden city-state ruled by a tyrannical upper class. Resources are scarce and technology is illegal. But in the slums, revolution is brewing.

Misha is a common pickpocket until his boss gives him a new job. Disguised as a whore, Misha is sent to work for one of the most powerful men in the city. But his real task is far more dangerous: get close to Miguel Donato, and find something – anything – that will help topple Davlova’s corrupt government.

Misha is plunged into the decadent world of the upper class, where slaves are common and even the most perverse pleasure can be found. Although he’s sure Davlova’s elite is involved in something horrific, proof is hard to come by, and Misha begins to fall in love with the man he’s supposed to betray. Then Misha meets Ayo – a sex slave forced by the neural implant in his brain to take pleasure from pain – and everything changes. As the lower class pushes toward a bloody revolution, Misha will find himself caught between his surprising feelings for Donato, his obligations to his clan, and his determination to save Ayo.

Warning: This book contains graphic descriptions of violent sexual acts of questionable consent that may be disturbing to some readers.
