Blurb:  Small but mighty—that could be Detective Nevin Ng’s motto. Now a dedicated member of the Portland Police Bureau, he didn’t let a tough start in life stop him from protecting those in need. He doesn’t take crap from anyone, and he doesn’t do relationships. Until he responds to the severe beating of a senior citizen and meets the victim’s bow-tied, wealthy landlord.

Property manager and developer Colin Westwood grew up with all the things Nevin never had, like plenty of money and a supportive, loving family. Too supportive, perhaps, since his childhood illness has left his parents unwilling to admit he’s a strong, grown man. Colin does do relationships, but they never work out. Now he’s thinking maybe he won’t just go with the flow. Maybe it’s time to try something more exciting. But being a witness to a terrible crime—or two—was more than he bargained for.

Despite their differences, Colin and Nevin discover that sparks fly when they’re together. But sparks are short-lived, dampened by the advent of brutal crimes, and Colin and Nevin have seemingly little in common. The question is whether they have the heart to build something lasting.

An Overlooked Opportunity: A Behind the Scene Excerpt of Accused

by Leona Windwalker

Varto smiled to himself. Surely this was an opportunity not to be missed! Withe the human home world now open to limited trade and human Volunteers coming to the station, there was money to be made providing them with home comforts. Home comforts that just happened to appeal to more than just humans.

Blix had profited at the food store, importing some of their foodstuffs. J’norah had gotten himself a Starbucks franchise, introducing the drink known as coffee. Varto was a cabinet maker though- how could he take advantage of this?

Word is that Commander is bringing home a human Sachari- surely he will wish to spend credits transforming their home into something familiar. Hmmm. Sachari are nurturers. Nurturers provide comfort. Comfort- food. Food- kitchen. Human kitchens no doubt are different from those found in the Talani Alliance. Yes, something to help make this like home, like comfort.

Varto picked up his data pad, opening an information search for ‘traditional kitchens- Earth’. He eyed the results. Wait, this result looked promising. It was a site that shared pictures by topic. He selected the Earth site. Ah, traditional to humans means old-fashioned. ‘Retro’ they call it, and it’s a thing. A popular thing. Yes, yes. Warm memories of old-fashioned cabinets and older appliances like your parent or their parent had. Getting comfort while nurturing your own young. He selected the most popular images, downloaded them, and saved them to a file. He couldn’t provide the human style appliances, but the cabinetry he could do. Now all he had to do was wait. The Sachari would come, and he would be waiting. And as the Commander’s mate, he will set a style trend. He smiled toothily. Yes, sir, the credits will come rolling in. I might even be able to franchise my designs. Varto’s Retro Relics. Hmm. I should see if I could partner with an engineer to design Talani appliances that look like the human old-fashioned ones. The look would then be complete. Not yet, though, he reminded himself. First to turn a profit on the cabinetry. Then roll out a complementary line, followed by franchise opportunities. Honorary Blogger Erica Cameron: Nemesis Playlist + Quotes & Giveaway!

Nemesis Playlist

by Erica Cameron

I can’t usually listen to music I know when I’m writing. Inevitably, I end up singing along and getting distracted from whatever I’m working on, so I’ve stopped trying to force it. That means I don’t usually create a playlist of music until after the first draft is done. Most often, I’ll be listening to something and one line will spark an “Oh, that reminds me of _____!” thought. This is how my book playlists get built. Slowly. Song by random song.

A note: the list below is in order based on band name, not anything book specific.

The Wicked Ones – 10 Years
Ticking Bomb – Aloe Blacc
Daniel in the Den – Bastille
Angel With a Shotgun – The Cab
Can’t Change Me – Chris Cornell
Seven Devils – Florence + The Machine
The Pretender – Foo Fighters
Wait it Out – Imogen Heap
Not Alone – Linkin Park
Wretches and Kings – Linkin Park
You Can Run, But We’ll Find You – Matchbook Romance
Youth Without Youth – Metric
Zero Sum – Nine Inch Nails
What Am I Becoming? – POP ETC
Ghost – Sir Sly

When Irish Eyes Are Smiling

by Matthew Robbins

With effort, Ronan shoved himself to a standing position. “This way, then. I’ll show ya where you’ll be sleepin’.” Felix followed behind Ronan as they made their way into the living room. “There’s the couch and the chair, take your pick.”

Felix looked at both, not liking the choices.

“Sorry we don’t have a guest suite for you, princess,” Ronan said shaking his head.

“Please,” Felix said. “It’s not that. Won’t I be, like, in the way?”

“No, you won’t,” Ronan said. “Grandad gets up at first light and he’ll expect the same of you. You’ll want to be up and have your sleepin’ area back to rights before breakfast is ready. Work outdoors should begin shortly after.”

Felix made an apprehensive face that he hoped would be exaggerated enough to make Ronan smile. Ronan’s eyes twinkled briefly before he said, “Keep them faces to yourself around Grandad. An old hard-ass, he is.” Felix’s expression became even more extreme—the corners of his mouth pulled back and down, his eyes wide, their pupils jiggling from side to side. Ronan broke into a short laugh before he added, “Eejit.” Continue reading

Honorary Blogger M.A. Church: The Inspiration Behind In Enemy Hands + Giveaway!

The Inspiration Behind In Enemy Hands

by M.A. Church

About a year ago, I was taking a break from writing and was goofing off on the Internet and ended up on Google Images. Originally I’d typed in vampires, then an incubus caught my eye, and from there it was a short trip to looking at fey-type characters, lol.

Since it was so long ago, I don’t remember why I was looking at these types of beings—probably needed character inspiration pictures. Then it happened… I ran across an image, one drawn by an artist.

I swear, my world actually stopped. In the artist’s rendition, one character had long black hair and the other had long white. I was so fascinated with the picture, I scrounged around on the Internet until I found who drew it and her gallery. Unfortunately, she’s French, so I couldn’t speak to her, but I saved the link.

The black-headed one (Adlar) is actually what the cover for In Enemy Hands is based on. His pale, pale skin, jet black hair, and pointed ears caught my attention. There was this look about him—introspective, but also restrained violence.

I knew then I had to write these two characters.

When I write science fiction, I usually start with the characters. Once I have them, and know their background, the world building starts from there. The picture I used for inspiration had the character standing side-by-side. The dark-headed one was standings upright with his arms crossed. The white-headed one (Varo) is slightly bent at the waist, his arms crossed, and leaning over a post. They’re both looking into the distance. There is an ease between the two of them, and I knew somehow that was going to be very important to the story.

There’s also a lot of play on imagery in the story. Good guys usually wear the white hats, right? *Points at Varo* There’s Varo with his white-blond hair. Then there’s Adlar, with his pale looks and black hair. Bad guys were black hats, right? *Grin* One of the things you often see in my stories is that appearances can be deceiving. Continue reading

About Long Shadows

by Kate Sherwood

longshadows_500x750LA cop Jericho Crewe got the hell out of Mosely, Montana, when he was seventeen. Fifteen years later, he’s back, and everything is just as messed up as when he left. He planned a quick visit to deal with his injured father, but of course things are never that simple. Family complications, police complications, social complications—and, as always, Wade Granger complications.

Jericho and Wade had been so close, once upon a time. First friends, then more than friends—and then, after Jericho’s escape, nothing. Wade’s magnetism hasn’t been lessened by a decade and a half apart; even when Jericho learns that Wade is the prime suspect in the death of Jericho’s father, the old connection still sparks.

When Jericho’s newly discovered half siblings are kidnapped, he needs to trust someone to help him find them. Wade’s a terrible choice, but Jericho’s never been known for his good judgment. Anyway, he’d rather make a bad decision with Wade than a good one with anybody else.
