His heart nearly broke at the fake smile that Liam gave him and the nod of acceptance as he quickly turned away and busied himself with unpacking. “I’ll give you some time to settle in, all right? I’m going to go take a swim and check in with my office and see what’s going on and if I’m needed. After that, I’ll make dinner. You can come down any time, feel free to look around the house and make yourself at home. We’ll talk about our contract at dinner and go from there, okay?”

Again, with the fake smile and nod. “Yes, Sir.”

It was a Sir, not a Daddy, but at least it wasn’t devoid of both. They’d get through this and feel their way around until they both had sure footing. Until then, Cash would lead them toward what he knew was right for them for now. He’d leave options open, but he knew he’d never be enough for the boy. Hell, twenty years was a big difference in age, he wasn’t about to assume he’d be enough for Liam long term. Sure, he could take care of the boy, but just like with Tommy, he’d do what was best for Liam, find out what his dream was, and make it happen. He was good at that. It didn’t matter that Liam, and everything that he was, felt different to him.

It didn’t matter that he had an attraction to the boy like he’d never had with Tommy. Obviously, Tommy was beautiful, energetic, young, sweet, and fun, but he wasn’t Liam. And if he could say that this early on, how was he going to feel in a week, a month, half a year?

He knew he’d inevitably fall in love with Liam. Not just love him but be truly, madly in love with the boy. It would take time. But he’d known the second he’d seen him on his doorstep two days ago that the kid was different in a way that would draw him in like a fly to honey. He had to maintain some level of control, and this was the only way he knew how. He wasn’t about to shoot himself in the foot and reject the boy outright. He wasn’t that self-sacrificing, but in order to put the boy first, having him live at the opposite side of the house was his best solution.

He was fucked.

Snap! We hardly stepped outside Madeline’s door, and already a team of groupies were taking her picture. Then a guy took my image.

“So what are you?” he said.

“Huh?”

“Are you a blogger, a post jockey, a quick phrase, a filmmaker, a photographer, or a lover?”

“I bet he’s a lover,” said a grinning teenager.

“He can’t be,” said her friend. “Madeline Q doesn’t shop online. Isn’t that true, Ms. Q?”

“That’s true,” my celebrity one-night stand said. “I’m glad to see you’re a well-read woman.”

I clenched my lips tight.

“So, which are you?” asked an older gent near the back. He folded his arms, seemingly more to keep warm than to make a statement.

“He’s all of them and none of them.” She winked at me.

“Is he your boyfriend, Madeline Q?”

“Why? Are you jealous?”

“Never take love too lightly,” the older gent said. “In an age of electronic social desperation, he may be the only thing worth coming back to.”

I smiled to myself.

“Weirdo,” jibed one of the teenagers.

“Listen to this man,” I said. “You don’t want to masturbate in front of a screen all your life.”

“He’s right,” the man continued. “You know our population is shrinking. Shit, ten percent of the last generation died virgins.”

“Ew!” shrieked the teen. “I don’t want to get a disease.”

“Who told you that, you silly girl?”

“I read it online.”

“Now, now,” said Madi. “My front door is not a place for debate or name-calling.”

A murmur ran through the small crowd. The elder pulled out his mobile screen. The lens in his small device extended as he pointed it at me.

“What’s your name?”

Madi placed her arm around my shoulder and declared, “His name is Tayler.”

The others pronounced my name, took extra shots, and uploaded. Continue reading

Honorary Blogger Davidson King: Why Professional Cuddler + Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Why Professional Cuddler

by Davidson King

In Hug It Out Teddy Harris is a professional cuddler. I always knew I was going to somehow write a book with a character who would have this occupation I just wasn’t sure where or when. About two years ago I was driving and there was a radio segment on unique and strange occupations. A man called in talking about his job as a professional cuddler and while it was a brief talk I was fascinated. I went home and began researching this job and why it would be appealing to others.

The more I researched the more I knew this was going to happen. I began picturing what type of person would do this, why, and who would be a challenge for them. I created Riordan from Teddy. He was the polar-opposite of Teddy. Riordan’s hands brought death, Teddy’s healing.

Reaching into the heart of an assassin would be a challenge for anyone but Riordan wanted to be saved and I think that is why Teddy was so perfect for him. There’s a scene by the poolside where Teddy explains to Riordan the medical side of human touch, it appeals to Riordan because he’s not a man of miracles he’s a man of facts.

Cuddling, human touch, it releases oxytocin, a chemical in our brains. Touch lowers blood pressure, stress, reduced social anxiety, relieves pain, and has proven to lessen PTSD. Pretty much all of these Riordan needs relief from.

I chose professional cuddling as an occupation for Teddy because it ids unique and I try to bring that to all my stories, but it was also eye opening. It was perfect for Riordan, and it made you see the parallels of these two characters. Touch is powerful.

Eyes Wide Open by V.M Sanford: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Eyes Wide Open

by V.M Sanford

He settled into the window seat and looked at the tarmac as Jason sat next to him. What was he supposed to say? Or better, what would he have said if he hadn’t been scared Jason would find out about his feelings?

It was ridiculous. Jason hadn’t noticed anything in all the years Spencer had loved him. It wouldn’t change because of an awkward moment, or Spencer hoped so anyway.

He turned to Jason, who was fidgeting in his seat. “What did you do these past few weeks? We barely saw each other.” Mostly because of Spencer.

Jason grinned. “I thought you were avoiding me.”

Ouch. That might be true, but Spencer wasn’t going to admit it. “I was just busy. You know, between work and the wedding stuff.”

“I get it. Only two weeks to go, huh?”

Dread turned Spencer’s stomach to lead. “Yeah.” He smiled, hoping it came across as real. “I would never have thought organizing a wedding would be so hard, and Lydia’s been doing most of it.”

“But you’ve been dealing with your mother.”

“True.” Spencer grimaced at the memory of their conversation the day before.

“I know that look. What did she do this time?”

“Nothing I wasn’t expecting, don’t worry. She wasn’t happy I was leaving for the weekend, and she tried to convince me to stay.”

“Ah, the good old I’ve-always-been-a-devoted-and-loving- mother-and-look-how-you’re-thanking-me guilt trip?”

“Exactly.”

“I don’t understand why you always give in.”

“I didn’t this time.” But he usually did. Hell, it had been his mother who had suggested he asked Lydia to marry him. They’d be dating for a while, and Spencer hadn’t wanted more, but her father had taken an interest in the vineyard, and his mother had seen how much she could gain. Spencer didn’t fool himself into thinking she’d pushed him so he’d be happy, yet he hadn’t been able to say no.

He was a weak, weak man.

Bones of Belief by Jess Thomas: Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Bones of Belief

by Jess Thomas

“Feel it, Darius?” he whispered in my ear. “I want you. Oh, how I want you. I’m getting your leg wet.” I wasn’t sure at what point we both had our clothes off, I was bombarded with so many sensations that the first sign was the feeling of the breeze on my legs. The smells of the flowers seemed to be stronger in the corner of the room, the feel of his lips against my skin made me have goosebumps. My body arched and time seemed to slow down. It was only the two of us in the world. I babbled something when he sucked me. His lips slowly moved up and down my shaft, and I wiggled back in forth his hands that were still pinning me to the bed. He fucked me with his mouth as I looked at our ceiling. It was slow and one-sided and wonderful. I wouldn’t always want it that way because I’m very tactile and love touch, but damn this was nice.

Omega Shadow by Quinn Michaels: Exclusive Excerpt

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Omega Shadow

by Quinn Michaels

One clean punch and the alpha dropped.

Good.

Shadow’s knuckles stung. He hated bullies. At least this one was staying down. Shadow had thought he would have to hit the other alpha again.

Whatever was going on with this alpha, he had lost control of his wolf. Shadow felt like he’d punched the other alpha back into human form as the man’s jaw receded and the fur on his hands and forearms sunk back into his skin. Maybe he had been sick. Maybe he was strung out. The latter seemed more likely. Though the Black Creek pack was much larger than Shadow’s own Pine Creek Lake den, they lacked discipline. Outside of fighting, the alphas just stomped around and did whatever they wanted, while the omegas and betas kept to their own.

It was weird to spend almost a month around so many wolves and yet feel like he barely knew any of them.

Shadow wanted to go home. He wasn’t doing much good here.

Shadow kneeled down beside the fallen alpha. The man looked pale. Had he stopped breathing? Shadow hadn’t hit him that hard. He put two fingers under the man’s nose to feel for breath. Nothing.

Shit.

Shadow felt for a pulse. He wasn’t a doctor. Moving his fingers up and down the side of the neck, he began to panic.

“Are you okay?” The guy he had rescued asked hesitantly.

No, Shadow was not okay. Had he just killed an alpha member of the pack he was visiting? Not good. It wasn’t like Shadow could run off and get Mark or one of the other Pine Creek Lake alphas and have them handle this. There was a witness. And besides, it would be cowardly. Shadow hadn’t done anything wrong.

Shadow looked up into the eyes of the man he had just rescued, and it was like his world stopped.

Lust, hot and furious coursed through him. Kneeling over a guy you’d maybe killed was not the time for a boner, but Shadow’s cock didn’t seem to care. Shadow wanted to take Kyle back to the room in the small cabin he shared with the other Pine Creek Lake alphas. He wanted to touch, suck, and lick Kyle until he came, and then plunge his cock into the man’s welcoming heat.

Shadow averted his gaze. Thankfully, the darkness and his skin tone made it difficult to see how his face flushed with embarrassment.

Was this wolf an omega?

He didn’t smell like one. He didn’t smell like anything more than sweat, fear and confusion, which meant he had to be a beta. Shadow had been attracted to other wolves before, omegas and the occasional beta, but it had been a shallow thing. Physical. Nothing like this growing, pulsing need. If Shadow had been able to scent any hint of omega on the other wolf, he’d have sworn this was his true mate.

He couldn’t deal with that now. This alpha, even if he was a bully, needed help.

“Do you know CPR?”

“Why?”

Shadow couldn’t look up again. Not if he had to meet the other man’s eyes. “I don’t think he’s breathing.”

Shadow kept his gaze on alpha’s body as the other wolf extended to slim fingers and with much more confidence than Shadow had felt, first checked to see if the alpha was breathing and then for a pulse.

It was at that point all hell broke loose. Of course the shit for brains alpha had a sobbing mate pregnant about to pop. And of course the mate’s panic had woken up everyone else for five or six cabins around, who all came staggering out to find out what it happened. And of course they now stared down at him, the outsider who had played some role in this alpha’s death.

“Kyle, what happened? Is Chaz…will he make it?”

“Your friend needs to count out the chest compressions.” Shadow was no CPR expert, but he did know that much. At least also now he knew the name of the disastrously attractive beta he rescued.

Kyle.

It seemed too simple a name for someone who had complicated Shadow’s life so much in such a short time.

Thankfully, until the doctor came, Kyle’s mouth was occupied with trying to breathe life back into his attacker.

As the very pregnant omega sobbed beside his mate, Shadow regretted mixing himself into what was rapidly becoming a mess. As a cub, his dark fur, quiet nature, and stealthy pranks had earned him the nickname Shadow. Instead of taking the lead, Shadow preferred to watch and then share what he had learned with one of the older and more outgoing alphas. It was one of the reasons Mark had wanted Shadow along for this “cultural exchange” program. Shadow wasn’t physically intimidating, he knew how to keep his mouth shut, and he kept himself out of trouble. Until tonight.

The pregnant omega had somewhat pulled herself together when the doctor arrived, carrying what looked like a large medical bag and an AED machine. “Kyle, what happened?”

The doctor was a stocky beta with messy curls pulled back in a frizzy bun. She wore a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and boots. The circle of neighbors around them parted, making room the for Dr. Havisham and two others who followed carrying a bright yellow, plastic gurney.

Kyle gave Chaz two more breaths and then while pumping steadily at the alpha’s chest, said, “He’s been out for approximately four minutes. I started CPR as soon as I saw he wasn’t breathing. I think he ODed or something.”

“Werewolves don’t OD.”

Kyle shrugged. “He looked messed up. Like he was on something. Shaky. Pupils dilated, and now he’s got some bruises under his skin. See?”

“Chaz said he’d stopped drinking,” the pregnant omega said.

“I know. He didn’t smell like alcohol,” Kyle responded. “It’s something though. He lost control of his wolf.”

Once Kyle had straddled the alpha to start CPR, Shadow had avoided looking at Kyle or the body. This bizarre attraction to the beta was disconcerting, and Shadow didn’t want to think of body on the ground as a man. One he had likely, if accidentally, killed. It made the death more real. Because of this aversion, he hadn’t seen the yellowish bruises that were blossoming on the man’s cheeks, neck and exposed chest.

“Those weren’t there before,” Shadow said.

“Who are you?”

Kyle cut in. “He saved me. Chaz was losing it. I was scared he was going to kill me.” He ended the set of compressions and dropped down to give two more breaths.

Shadow couldn’t help but be impressed. This Alpha, Chaz, had done his best to beat the hell out of Kyle. Possibly kill him. And now Kyle was giving his all to save Chaz’s life. And Shadow couldn’t even look at Kyle without thinking about how much he wanted to get into the betas pants. There was definitely something wrong.

“Just keep up the compressions. We’ll start with the AED. If it will help. Then we’ve got to get him to the hospital cabin.” The doctor leaned over the body, lifted his eyelids and shined a flashlight at his bare pupils. “Nonresponsive. Has some hemorrhaging.” She looked up at Shadow. “Can you hold him down? Sometimes the shock will induce a shift, and they’ll lash out. Just grab him by the shoulders.”

Shadow didn’t want to put himself in a position of sitting directly in front of the beta who had stirred his desire so intensely, but he wouldn’t take the coward’s way out. Not when Kyle was working so tirelessly to save the life of the guy who had attacked him.

Once the pads were placed, a warning bell sounded and everyone took their hands off of the Alpha.

“Grab him right after the shock,” Dr. Havisham ordered.

But then another bell sounded, and the machine powered down.

“It’s never easy,” the doctor said with a sigh. “I’m giving him some epinephrine and will have to keep the compressions going until we get him back to the hospital.”

“Is he going to be okay?” The pregnant omega asked.

“We’re doing everything we can,” the doctor said. “Now Sam, Desmond, get the gurney down next to him. And when you need some folks to lift him. Kyle, you keep the compressions going until we have to transfer him, and then I’m going to need you to start back up again while we move him to the hospital cabin. Okay?”

Everyone agreed. And though they moved quickly, Shadow knew that Chaz was running out of time. He had probably already run out of time.

Though Kyle was on the small side for a beta, Chaz was large and difficult to move, especially when Kyle got back on top of him and continued with the CPR. The two betas lifting the gurney back up grunted, arms shaking as they tried to manage the unwieldy load. Shadow ran alongside and grabbed an end.

“What are you doing? Get off of him!” One of the others, a thin, middle-aged woman with reddish hair threaded in white.

Shadow ignored her. Were any of the other spectators helping?

“A little help,” the doctor shouted, sounding as annoyed as Shadow felt.

Finally, a few of the other younger looking wolves peeled off and grabbed the plastic gurney at the edges. He and the others carried Chaz into a clean, white walled room that smelled of antiseptic.

“Get him up on the table,” the doctor said. “And then I’m going to need the rest of you to step outside. Except Kyle. Kyle, stay here.”

Shadow, feeling suddenly superfluous, did as he was told. Within minutes, he was standing outside the front of the cabin. One of the other Blackcreek wolves who had helped carry the gurney stepped ahead of Shadow and waved to another of his pack-mates.

Shadow took that moment of distraction to step aside, and avoiding the glow cast from the twin lights at the front of the cabin, he stuck to his namesake and quietly avoided the group. He had made it halfway back to the guest cabin where he and the other Pine Creek Lake wolves were staying when someone whispered harshly from behind him, “Shadow?”

It was Lena. She was a chubby, dark-haired omega and the sister of Shadow’s heart. She also had a way of showing up just in time to watch Shadow take the heat for his worst scrapes.

“What happened?” She asked. “People are saying you and one of their alphas got into a fight and you killed him.”

“I didn’t kill anyone. I hit him once. He fell over and stopped breathing. I didn’t even hit him that hard.”

“I’m taking you to Mark.”

Shadow wasn’t going to argue with that. He wanted to talk to Mark. Mark always knew what to do. Maybe he would have some insight into why this Blackcreek beta had affected Shadow so strongly. Shadow’s face heated, and he shook his head. Mark didn’t need to know about that. Shadow had already gotten himself into enough trouble.

As his thoughts shifted to Kyle, a sudden sense of both sadness and guilt washed through him and he knew Chaz was gone. Dead.

I must be imagining things, Shadow told himself. He didn’t feel guilty about Chaz’s death. And he certainly wasn’t sad about it. The whole thing had been inconvenient and annoying.

Shadow shook his head again, trying to shake out these weird emotions that he knew weren’t his.

“Are you okay?” Lena asked.

“I’m just…” Shadow sighed. “Have you ever heard of an alpha and a beta being true mates?”

Lena laughed. “You’re ears high in trouble, and you’re asking about true mates? Wait! You think you found your true mate? Here?”

“No. No!”

“Who is it? Boy or girl?”

“Nobody.”

“You’re blushing.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re embarrassed; I can smell it on you. Who is it? You think it’s a beta?”

Bank Run by Alli Reshi: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Bank Run

by Alli Reshi

I watched the men carefully as they walked between the rows of people, trying to find anything distinctive about them. Something that would be helpful when backup inevitably arrived. You couldn’t close off a main bank and have no one notice. Zel started whimpering as yelling broke out between one of the patrons and a robber. He grew more hysterical, despite Alvia’s best efforts.

Oi, shut that kid up,” another robber—slightly bulkier than his comrades—yelled. My quick hand to Mark’s shoulder was likely the only thing that kept him from retaliating. He settled with simply glaring at the other man. The rate at which the robbers gathered the valuables proved these were not amateurs, but it was my assumption that they were likely only gathering them for pocket change or to keep the hostages afraid.

I didn’t have anything more than my wallet, but I couldn’t speak for what Alvia and Mark had. Mark turned up his jacket collar to hide his mask, which would only look like a fancy bit of jewelry worn around his neck to these people. Though, in fact, it was a highly specialized device that would expand to shield his face and had a number of sensors, Mark’s mask also doubled as his communicator when needed. Alvia was desperately tucking a brooch under Zel’s shirt, having calmed him for the moment. Quite possibly, it was the most valuable thing she possessed.

“All right, hand it over,” one of the robbers demanded, shoving the decently full bag at us. I put my wallet in and turned out my pockets to show I didn’t have anything else. Holding Zel tight the whole time, Alvia took off the two rings from her fingers and the simple necklace she wore, along with the checkbook she had in her pocket.

Oi, what about the kid. He hiding anything?” The robber loomed over the boy, who couldn’t handle the scrutiny and started crying again. “Shut up, brat.” The man aimed to swing at the woman and boy, but I pulled them away as Mark moved forward.

“Now, what kinda lowlife tries to hit a kid, huh? Didn’t your mama teach you any manners?” Mark sneered at the man hovering over him.

“Don’t you yap at me. I’m the one that’s about to get very rich while you lose it all. So shut up, or you’re next,” the robber growled, grabbing Mark under the jaw.

“Aw, Tiny has to yell so he can feel all big and strong. How cute,” Mark mocked as he pulled his wallet out of his pocket to throw at the idiot’s head. A punch to the gut sent Mark crumpling to the ground. Thankfully, the robber walked away, grumbling and leaving it at that. I held Alvia to my side as Mark slowly sat up.

“That was stupid! What were you thinking, Noland?” I hissed, glancing around to keep a head count of our captors.

Honorary Blogger Robert Winter: Defeating the “White Savior” Narrative + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Defeating the “White Savior” Narrative

by Robert Winter

It’s a truism that we don’t know what we don’t know. In my case, I didn’t know I was blind to my own privilege until the editing process for Asylum exposed it.

When I wrote September, I expected that Colin Felton would be the main character in its sequel. I also had a story I wanted to tell, of an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador dealing with the realities of life in the United States. I planted the seeds of their pairing in September by making Colin a lobbyist who works with a nonprofit organization focused on the issues facing immigrants.

I originally wrote Colin as a Prince Charming type, bestowing gifts and safety with no expectation—or need—for Hernán to do anything for him. It’s certainly a common trope in romance, as evidenced by all the books out there with “billionaire” in the title, or that are derived from fairy tales like Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast.

My developmental editor, however, quickly pointed out that I was leaving myself open to a charge of the “white savior” narrative. I had to look that up, and what I read shook me badly. Simplistically, the term refers to a story where a white character rescues people of color from their plight. The common examples are movies like The Help, wherein the African-American maids “need” the activism of the wealthy white girl to find the strength to expose their employers’ racism, or The Blind Side, where the white woman “teaches” the young black man how to become a football star.

As soon as my editor pointed out what I’d done, I knew she was right. In the early drafts of Asylum, I focused much more on what the white Colin accomplishes for the Latino Hernán. I had produced a soft, feel-good story about a white man using his wealth to woo. For example, originally I wrote a scene where Colin takes Hernán to New York for a weekend, dazzling him with an expensive hotel and dinner. I liked the scene for its wish-fulfillment aspects, but I’d focused on the least interesting aspects of my own characters.

My first major rewrite, then, reconceived the book to focus on Hernán’s journey, experiences and growth. While Colin provides him with support and love (as do Rudy and eventually several other characters like Juan and Sofia who appear in later chapters), Hernán is the one who does the major work to repair his life. He makes all the leaps of faith, and ultimately deals with his troubled past.

The shift allowed me to see I had written about what Colin could do for Hernán, rather than what he might need from Hernán. I knew Colin was shy and regretted never having made a move on Brandon in September, but I began to wonder why. That gave me the opportunity to understand his weaknesses and the reason behind them, which in turn let me explore how Hernán could help. The book always began with Colin’s rescue after falling into a harbor. Now I could explore the other ways in which Hernán rescues him over and over.

The lesson I take away from this rewriting experience is that following old tropes like Cinderella without re-examination means that I have been lazy and have probably missed richer storytelling potential with my own characters. I hope you’ll give Asylum a try to see if I was successful in finding the deeper romance between Hernán and Colin.
