Writing the Perfect(ly Flawed) Romantic Hero

by Shira Anthony

Thank you, Blogger Girls, for hosting the first stop on the Swann’s Revenge Book Tour! I’m so happy to share my latest entry in the Dreamspun Desires line of romance-forward, tropey love stories from Dreamspinner Press. Be sure to read to the bottom of the post about how to enter to win a cool unisex leather heart bracelet to celebrate the book tour and read an excerpt from the story.

No matter how you look at it, there’s no denying that romances are all about the characters. It’s about falling in love as you read. Dreamspun Desires, like any great category romances along the lines of a Harlequin, are full of wonderful tropes: the arranged marriage, the secret baby, mistaken identify, or, as in the case of Swann’s Revenge, the ugly-duckling.

But characters, too, have their tropes. The damaged hero with the heart of gold. The once-burned, now closed-off man who doesn’t think he’s ready to love again. The playboy who hide his loneliness. You get the picture. Each of these characters, and the million variations on them, are what live and breathe at the heart of every romance.

So what’s the common denominator here? They all have flaws, just like real human beings. A story about a perfect relationship with no challenges is boring. The same is true for our MCs. Perfect isn’t fun, and it isn’t realistic, so we don’t buy in to the characters or root for them when life, and love, present them with challenges.

Swann’s Revenge is the love story of two very different men, Graham (our ugly-duckling-turned-hotter-than-hell-swan) and Dan, the former high school star quarterback. Both have flaws, although the story is mostly about how Graham comes to terms with his past. Dan is easy to love. He’s sweet, he’s figured out who he is, and he’s confident without being overbearing. Graham, on the other hand, is a bit more difficult to love. But Dan sees the heart hiding behind Graham’s carefully built walls, and he doesn’t give up easily.

Who’s my favorite of the two? Graham. In a heartbeat. And not because he’s drop-dead gorgeous. It’s because I absolutely love a flawed hero who hides his heart. I’ve written more than a few of them over the years, my favorite of which is David Somers, the conductor from the Blue Notes Series, who’s heart begins to thaw when he hears the beautiful music coming from Alex Bishop’s violin. Sure, Alex is easier to love, just as Dan is in Swann’s Revenge, but I personally adore seeing love do its healing work.

Not to say that Dan doesn’t have his own issues (spoilery, so I won’t talk about them here), but watching Graham Swann blossom into a truly happy man is what Swann’s Revenge is all about.

Happy reading, and don’t forget to comment on this post to be entered to win the cool unisex “Follow your heart” bracelet I’m giving away at the end of the tour! -Shira Continue reading

No Shame by Nora Phoenix: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from No Shame

by Nora Phoenix

When Charlie yawned again, he leaned over and whispered in his ear, “You wanna take a nap?”

Charlie’s forehead crinkled the way it did when he was worried about something. “I can’t sleep if I’m alone.”

“I’ll come with you.”

“You will?” The surprise in Charlie’s voice hit Brad deep. Did Charlie really not grasp Brad would do pretty much anything for him?

“Sure thing, sweetie. Let’s lie down for a little bit.”

The others had no problem with them taking a nap, so he led Charlie into their bedroom, Max following them, then softly closed the door behind them. They both stripped to their boxers, and Charlie crawled into bed, yawning again.

Brad would never admit it, but he loved sleeping next to Charlie. There was something so sweet and comforting about feeling that much smaller body snuggled against him. Max found a spot right next to the bed on Brad’s side, and Brad smiled. He loved how Max was never far from his side.

Charlie immediately nestled close against Brad and put his head on Brad’s shoulder, flinging an arm across his abdomen. It was Charlie’s favorite position, Brad had deducted, because he always curled up like that against Brad. It was the sweetest torture, to hold that gorgeous man, that perfect body, to want him so much…and know he’d never be good enough to deserve him.

“Does Miles know?” Charlie asked out of the blue.

Brad had to think for a second what Charlie could be referring to. Ah. That. “About me? No. It’s just sex, Charlie, that’s it.”

“How long do you think you can keep having sex with him with your underwear on, or with him blindfolded?”

“As long as I have to.”

“You don’t think he’s getting suspicious? Or maybe I should say curious.”

Brad sighed. “Maybe. Probably. I don’t care. I’m not telling him shit, babe. It’s none of his fucking business.”

Charlie was quiet for a bit. “I think he wants more than just sex,” he then said.

“I don’t.” Brad’s voice was definitive. He was not discussing this with Charlie. Charlie was such a romantic at heart. He never fully understood why Brad did what he did in the club, and he certainly would never understand the complicated thing he had with Miles. “Get some rest, babe.”

Dantès Unglued by Jocelynn Drake and Rinda Elliott: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Dantès Unglued

by Jocelynn Drake and Rinda Elliott

Quinn waited while Shane walked Baden out, then headed toward the break room. He dug out one of the bagels and frowned to find it cold. There wasn’t a toaster on the counters, so he settled for the microwave even though it would make it chewier than he liked. As he stood there, staring at the buzzing appliance, he couldn’t stop his mind from supplying images of Shane and Baden naked.

“Fuck,” he muttered as he grabbed on to the edge of the counter and worked to push back the heat pouring into him. Lean, muscled Shane writhing on a bed with that tattooed slab of muscle. He’d have loved to have seen that. He wondered what Shane was like in bed. He laughed often, so would he be the type to crack jokes, or would he be a serious lover? Would he be attentive and take his time? Or would he be fast like everyone Quinn had been with before?

Fast and boring.

All of Quinn’s experiences with sex so far had been with either inexperienced teens when he was a teen himself, or later, some pretty unfucking-forgettable bad lays. And he hadn’t had all that many experiences either. Sex was something he enjoyed more by himself. The last time he’d tried with another guy hadn’t been anything to write home about, so he just figured it wasn’t worth the effort. That had been over a year ago.

Didn’t mean his body didn’t still react to the right stimulation and Shane seemed to trip all his triggers. When Shane cleared his throat, Quinn jumped, hoping the hot guilt burning in his cheeks wouldn’t be as noticeable as it felt. He turned to find Shane leaning against the doorjamb, his crooked grin telling Quinn his wish was not to be. His cheeks probably looked like he’d popped his head into an oven.

“There’s a toaster in the cabinet under the microwave,” Shane said. “Ethan and I both prefer toasted bread for our sandwiches, so it was easier just to store one here.”

Quinn reached into the cabinet and pulled out the toaster. He plugged it in and arranged it on the counter. He fiddled with the cream cheese packets and picked up a plastic knife. “Thanks for the bagels,” he murmured. “I’ll have to get you lunch.”

“Sure, if you’d like. But it’s not necessary.” Shane came farther into the room and dug through the bag and pulled out an everything bagel. “Love these things despite the fact that I hate getting the poppy seeds stuck in my teeth.” He grinned. “You’ll tell me if I do, right? You won’t just sit there, silently laughing at me with black shit in my teeth?”

That surprised a laugh out of Quinn. “Nah, I’ll tell ya.” He stopped the microwave and toasted his bagel.

When it was done, he settled at the small table against a wall and took a big bite. He chewed and watched Shane get his own breakfast ready. When the man sat across from him, he couldn’t help but notice those brown eyes stayed steady on him as always. What the hell did the man see to make him stare so hard and so often? Quinn fought the urge to squirm under that all too probing look and keep his eyes on his food.

“So tell me about yourself. What do you do besides perform computer wizardry for Rowe?”

“Read, game—the usual stuff.”

“Have a boyfriend?”

“No.”

“Haven’t found anyone good enough or are you the type to play the field?”

Quinn looked up. “Like you? That was quite the practiced brush-off you gave Baden. Why didn’t you want to go out with him again?”

Shane shrugged. “I might. We just hooked up once, had some laughs.” He winked. “And a good time. Those tattoos cover everything, if you were curious.”

“I liked them. Can’t imagine having that many, though. He must be a pain junkie.”

“Or he likes the art. Whoever works on him is pretty talented. He’s got this stunning, detailed tiger face covering his entire back. Stares right up at you.”

Quinn choked on his bagel.

Author Q&A: J.K. Hogan + Excerpt!

Interview Banner

Hi folks! J.K. Here! I’m here to talk about my new project (you know, in addition to all of my traditional WIPs) called Stray. Stray is a book I’m releasing by the chapter, free on my website (think fanfiction, but not). It’s a bit of a deviation from my normal M.O. of contemporary with a side of mental health issues, delving farther into world-building, futuristic tech, and combining human lore with paranormal fantasy. This story is purely for my own—and hopefully your—enjoyment. Read on for more info!

What is Stray?

Stray is the first volume in a series called the Sentinel Series. At the heart of each book will always be a primary romance, but the rest of it…well it fits into a lot of genres—paranormal, fantasy, dystopian, etc. It takes place in the future, after mankind has been decimated several times by disease or war, and borders have been redrawn, territories renamed. Humans are still around, but they’re struggling after the last major disaster. Supernatural creatures still try to keep their existence a secret, but some would like to see humans killed off entirely. Certain species live symbiotically with humans, which means their survival is dependent on one another whether the humans realize it or not. Those species have formed an alliance called the Midnight Sentinel, which patrols the territories eliminating mortal threats to humans.

I’ve partnered with digital artist Somber Illusory Soda who does accompanying illustrations, character profiles, and other fun stuff. I’m releasing Stray chapter by chapter as a fanservice web series.

Who is Stray about?

Probably every supernatural creature you can imagine is in there, but the main characters are Sebastian, of species Feliscindae, or cat-shifters, and a young human (??) man named Noah. The two form an unlikely pairing as they fight against threats to both of their species. We meet many other characters of many different species along the way.

And it’s free? Why?

Yes. And why…because it’s a fun story, and we want everyone to be able to read it and see the art. We started out on Patreon, but we quickly decided that we wanted to share the content with a wider audience, and offering it for free would do that, along with giving us complete freedom when it comes to content. Patreon subscribers have currently read ahead to chapter twelve, but every chapter will eventually be available on the free site.

Where can you find Stray?

Available free here or directly to the chapter feed here.

Chapters are cross-posted here.

Illustrations are cross-posted here (and any NSFW illustrations will be available on Tumblr only, though we’ll let you know about them on the main story feed).

Patreon early release (if you want to read ahead…once the free site catches up, we will be closing the Patreon) is available here.

Sound of Silence by Mia Kerick and Raine O’Tierney: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Exclusive Excerpt from Sound of Silence

by Mia Kerick and Raine O’Tierney

Renzy

His BMW is idling by our curb, and I really should get my ass out of his car. The longer I wait, the more awkward it gets. But I don’t want to leave—I really don’t. I had the best time today. It may have been the best time of my life.

I shouldn’t tell him that. Instead I place the notebook back on my knee and scribble. <Did I thrill you today?> I’’m trying to be playful, but when I look up, Seven is studying me in the hazy evening. He says so much with his eyes, I wonder if he knows? Without actually moving, he pushes back my hair, fingering the buzzed side. He touches my cheek, running his fingers down the side of my face, up under my chin. He leans forward and kisses me. All of this he does with his eyes only. I lick my lips and his gaze unabashedly follows the movement of my tongue.

“There are ways you could thrill me more,” Seven says, and I die.

I’m dead now. Dead, gone, buried because I don’t know exactly what he means, but I know enough to know that we’re going to kiss for real, and goddamn I’m ready.

I lean forward at the same moment he leans forward and we share a barely there whisper of a kiss.

Okay, yes. That happened.

I just kissed Seven Moreau-Maddox. In his BMW. In front of my house.

Holy shitballs, that just happened.

“You’re blushing.” Is he surprised? This is my first kiss—who doesn’t blush at their first kiss? Maybe Seven didn’t. That makes me blush even more. “It’s a nice shade of pink, though. Reminds me of the spring cherry blossoms in Paris.”

Honorary Blogger M.D. Neu: Inspiration + Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Inspiration

by M.D. Neu

I want to thank the folks here at The Blogger Girls for having me here to start my Blog Tour for The Calling. With the story being out now for a couple of weeks I’ve been asked how I came up with the idea for this story. I thought I would answer that question here.

I started with my main character, Duncan.  Duncan is an everyman.  He could be your brother, your cousin, your best friend, or he could be that guy you pass every day on your way to the office. He is meant to represent all of us.  It doesn’t matter who you are, or who you love, you should be able to see something of yourself in Duncan. At least that is my hope.

As for the story idea, when I was a kid and even now I love vampires and vampire stories.  I watched and read everything I could about these amazing creatures.  However, the issue I have with these stories was that we were expected to believe that vampires could exist in our modern world.  Given we have cameras in everything and that we are watched 24/7 I wondered how vampires could really be.  How could you have a pack of vampires kill people without anyone ever finding out.  How would social media play into this?  What if someone live streamed a vampire attack and the video went viral?  How would vampires keep their secret?

Now that I had my main character and an idea of my story I needed to come up with a location.  I picked my hometown of San Jose, California, which is the heart of the technology. I thought it would be fun to set the book in a technology hot spot and poke a little fun at other better-known cities. And I really wanted to highlight San Jose and other local towns. I wanted to show people just what an amazing place this area of the country is and why we are so blessed to live here.

With my main character, my setting and my story idea (vampires and witches, which I always felt complimented each other), I started to populate my story and began writing.  I outlined the story and planned my world’s lore. The final product, which I’m hoping people will enjoy is, The Calling. Continue reading

Love Times Five by Lily G. Blunt: Exclusive Excerpt

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Love Times Five

by Lily G. Blunt

The moon shone low and bright in the now cloudless, star-speckled sky. The earlier storm had passed, leaving a cool, clear evening.

The sudden urge to throw his head back and howl prompted Shaun to move away from the cabin towards the cover of the trees.

Everything around him was visible and not just because of the reflected light from the moon. Zach’s unusual heartbeat thrummed slow and steady. A rabbit scurried under a nearby bush. An owl flew low across the open grass leading down to the lake. All of Shaun’s senses were on high alert. The scent emanating from Zach, combined with traces of Colin and their many sex sessions, stiffened his cock. “Gonna fuck you so hard after this,” he declared to Zach.

“Oh yeah?” Zach’s voice was rough.

“Yeah. Against a tree until you coat the bark with your cum.”

The blip in Zach’s heart rate gave Shaun the reassurance that his fantasy would be fulfilled that night.

Shaun didn’t need to check if they were being observed, but he glanced around anyway. In his current state, he would pick up on the scent or sounds made by someone watching them.

“We’re alone,” Zach confirmed.

The time was right.

Shaun stripped out of his clothes and draped them over a low-hanging branch, leaving only his shoes and socks on the still-wet grass beneath.

He stood naked beside Zach under the round moon. His body burned, inside and out. It itched. It stretched. The cool of the night air had no effect on his soaring temperature.

The wolf inside him paced, ready to pounce in an instant.

“Okay, let’s do this,” Shaun said to himself as much as to Zach.

He shook his head and shoulders, sending a violent ripple over his skin. A snarl erupted from his elongated muzzle. His hands fell towards the forest floor, and by the time he landed, Shaun’s paws and claws dug into the damp earth. The bone-cracking pain fizzled out in a flash.

Shaun felt free and so alive.

When he lifted his head this time, a long mournful howl ripped out of his throat and echoed through the forest.

No reply came.

The wolf sniffed the air, and the earthy woodland odour bombarded his nostrils. Zach’s heady fragrance was now intoxicating. Lust curled deep inside of Shaun, and the fur on his back stood on end.

The animal pawed the ground, eager to stretch its legs. He wanted to fuck, but he needed to run more.

The wolf growled low in his throat.

Zach raced past in a flash, and Shaun’s heart quickened. He set off after him. His fluid strides lengthened, and his paws pounded the earth in time with his heartbeat.

Running wild, both creatures dodged low branches and exposed tree roots. Twigs snapped underfoot and leaves fluttered away.

The full moon glowered above them.

The breeze rushed past the fur on his face.

Their race—or chase—was exhilarating. Exciting. Arousing.

Wolf and vampire ran and ran and ran, neither of them tiring.

Seeing Red: Interlude by T.C. Orton: Exclusive Excerpt & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from Seeing Red: Interlude

by T.C. Orton

As I looked at the thing staring back at me in Benjamin’s reflective lenses, I felt the weight of my humanity lift. My essence, my individuality, my wants and needs and aspirations… All of it gone, all of it meaningless. And in it’s wake, a monster took hold; a monster with eyes like fire, skin like ash, and nails like knives.

I was free, and in my freedom, I gained some profound knowledge.

I was going to tear them to shreds. I was going to revel in their deaths. I was going to slaughter them both, drain them of their innards, and walk away with a smile on my face.

“Sorry, Benjamin,” I grinned as the pulse devoured me. “Dying here wouldn’t be fitting for a prince.”

Before he could retaliate; before he could formulate a retort, I rammed my fist into his throat. Not around, not a grip, not a hold, but into his throat. I wore his neck like a glove and felt his insides sloshing between my fingers. Then, I raised him up, and watched as blood oozed out around my hand.

Character Interview with Jackson Jablonic & Evan Goodwyn from Bleeding Like Me by Riley Parks + Giveaway!

Blogger_Character_Interview copy

Interview with Jackson Jablonic & Evan Goodwyn

My name is Riley Parks and I’m the author of Bleeding Like Mea romance novel about Jackson Jablonic and Evan Goodwyn, two men in rival street gangs who fall in love. I’m lucky to be joined by these antiheroes today.

Riley Parks: Thank you so much for agreeing to sit down with me to talk all things Bleeding Like Me.

Jackson Jablonic: Antiheroes, huh?

Evan Goodwyn: Guess she’s not down for us like she said she was when she started writing the book.

JJ: Guess not.

RP: In all fairness, you guys have done some questionable things in the past, and some things are blatantly wrong. It’s not that you aren’t likable. I like you…

JJ: What do you say about motherfuckers you don’t like then?

EG: Shit.

RP: Do you want to be heroes? Role models?

JJ: First, that’s two questions. We told you we’d answer five, and you’re going for two right from the jump.

RP: We could call it one.

EG: We could, but we won’t.

RP: Tough crowd.

EG & JJ: (crickets)

RP: All right (clears throat), do you want to be a hero, Jackson?

JJ: Would I get to fly and shit?

EG: That’d be pretty cool.

RP: I was thinking more an “everyday” hero, not so much a superhero.

JJ: The problem with you is you do too much thinking.

EG: Too much limiting really. I’d be down to be a superhero.

JJ: Do you write that kinda shit?

RP: I don’t. I like to focus on more realistic, true to life gritty stories, like yours.

EG: That sucks. Jack would look fucking hot in some superhero shit. That ass would be like, POW!

(all laughing)

JJ: Shut the fuck up.

RP: Me or Evan?

JJ: Both.

RP: Let’s move on. Role models. Do you want to be role models?

JJ: To who?

RP: To anyone.

JJ: That ship’s sailed, capsized and sank, so probably not.

EG: I’d like to be a role model.

RP: Yeah?

JJ: You would?

EG: (shrugs) Why not? Do you only get one chance to be an okay person? Two? What’s the limit?

RP: That’s not for us to decide, I guess. Maybe that’s a question for the reader.

JJ: I don’t give a shit what they say about it. If he wants to be a role model, they’re not gonna tell him that one day he can’t be.

RP: So maybe we don’t call you antiheroes anymore. What should we call you instead?

JJ: You’re the writer.

RP: How about works in progress?

EG: I like that.

JJ: Fine. You got three more questions to go.

RP: What was your favorite part of the book?

EG: I liked when you wrote about how I painted Jack.

JJ: I liked when you wrote about Evan’s dick.

EG: (rolls eyes) Really?!

JJ: That’s quality content right there.

EG: Do you regret interviewing us?

RP: (bites inside of mouth) Not at all. What about your least favorite part of the book?

JJ: You wrote about shit you shouldn’t have written about. That’s all we gotta say about that.

RP: (looks at Evan)

EG: That’s all we gotta say about that.

JJ: Last one. Make it good.

RP: What’s something you want readers to know about you that they may not have learned in the book?

JJ: I don’t want them to know anything else about me. They know too much already.

RP: Evan?

EG: I want them to know I’m trying to be a better person.

JJ: You’re doing fine, Evan.

EG: (shrugs) It is what it is.

RP: Thanks for talking with me.

JJ: We done here?

RP: We’re done.

JJ: Thank fuck. Continue reading

A Kind of Home & Leaning Into Always by Lane Hayes: Exclusive Excerpts & Giveaway!

Blogger_Exclusive Excerpt

Exclusive Excerpt from A Kind of Home

by Lane Hayes

“I’ve got it!” Adam sprang to his feet and waved his hand excitedly.

I gave him a weary sideways glance. “Whatever you’re thinking, stop.”

“No, it’s perfect. You teach me guitar and I’ll teach you how to bake something.”

“Tonight?”

“Not necessarily. When we can. The point is I’ll be here if you don’t feel like being alone. We can keep each other sane with wholesome diversions without having to ask ‘What do you feel like doing, roomie?’”

“‘Wholesome diversions’? You’ve been mainlining confectioner’s sugar again, haven’t you?” I quipped.

“Ha. Ha. Don’t overthink. I’ll keep my hands to myself. You’re safe with me. I promise. I just—we’re both adjusting to change. It might be helpful to lean on each other. That’s all.”

“Platonically?”

“Sure. Boston cream pie for a tip or two on how to play a couple Guns N’ Roses classics. What do you think?”

I lowered my eyes as I worked on the row of buttons on my navy shirt. I was touched. I couldn’t remember the last time someone stopped to notice my state of mental well-being and offered to ease my mind. I knew my friends cared, but they were going through the same things I was. All they could say was “Hang on. It’ll get easier.” Adam was offering something more—himself and his time. Platonically.

I wasn’t sure I trusted myself to keep us in the friend zone. Even now I wanted to tackle him to the bed and grind against him. He was solid, familiar, and trustworthy. Just what I needed to keep my mind off my troubles.

“Okay. You’re on.” I chuckled when he let out a whoop before I continued. “But we each get to choose what we want to learn.”

Adam mulled over my suggestion for a moment, then inclined his head. “As long as you know we aren’t making anything from a box.”

“And as long as you know I can only take so many run-throughs of ‘Sweet Child of Mine’ before I’ll strangle you.”

Adam gave me a megawatt grin and then held up his hand for a high five. I slapped his hand and then rolled my eyes when he broke into a decent impression of Axl Rose’s version of “Patience.”

“Go,” I said, shooing him out of my bedroom. “I’ve got real-life bullshit to deal with. No more nonsense.”

“A little nonsense is good for you, Isaac. It’s what keeps you afloat so the bad stuff doesn’t drag you under.” He reached for my wrist and pulled me against him so our chests collided.

It was a slapstick maneuver that was too rough to be taken as a sensual overture. Until he backed me against the wall and lowered his head a fraction of an inch, stopping when his nose brushed mine. I held my breath, aware of my thundering heart. My world constricted to the smallest fragment of space. I occupied a place against a wall, covered by a man I’d known most of my life. Someone I cared about and, yeah, lusted after too.

Adam lowered his head again, and this time he didn’t stop. He pressed his lips to mine and went perfectly still as though testing my response. When I didn’t protest, he melded his mouth over mine, careful to keep the connection light. I reached out and ran a tentative hand along his cheek. Adam trembled and leaned into my touch, deepening the kiss ever so slightly. Then he licked my lips in a silent request for entry. I groaned when our tongues glided together and let him pull me under.

I broke for air and pushed his chest. This was ridiculous. We were friends only, and we were destined for heartache if we tried to be something else. “We can’t do this. I told you, I—”

Adam tugged at my belt loop and drew me against him. Then he rested his forehead against mine and went still as though he was wordlessly giving me control. I should have pushed him away, but I couldn’t. I fused my lips to his and moaned into the connection. I shivered when he moved his hands up my chest, then placed them on the wall on either side of my head. He nudged my chin with his nose until I exposed my neck. He traced my jawline with the tip of his tongue and then bit my earlobe before whispering in a raspy voice, “No repeats. I’ll behave. But I gotta admit… I really want to change your mind.”

Exclusive Excerpt from A Kind of Home

by Lane Hayes

“Hmm. I want to drop this, but…I have one last question. What did you mean about ‘being from here?’ I know San Francisco is home now but this is a nice place too. I always thought it would be kind of cool to move back someday so I could—”

“No. No way. Never,” I replied emphatically.

I tried and failed again to make a getaway. Zane pounced on me and held me down, snaking his arm across my chest to keep me next to him.

“O-kay…where’s this coming from?”

“I can’t explain it. You wouldn’t understand.”

“Try me.”

“It sounds stupid.” I met his patient gaze, hoping he’d cut me some slack, but he didn’t budge and I had a feeling he wouldn’t until I spit it out. “Fine. I was teased pretty mercilessly for being a geek from kindergarten through high school. I never fit in. I wasn’t blond, athletic, or particularly charming. I was smart. Smarter than I appear to be now,” I huffed.

“Who bullied you? I’m gonna kick some ass. No one messes with my man,” he said, nuzzling my neck.

I chuckled, running my fingers along his spine. “Thanks. I told you it sounded lame. I’m a perfectly well-adjusted adult when I’m not here. And I’m actually pretty good when I come for quick family visits, but this feels different. It feels like I’m being thrown back in time and forced to hang out with the cool kids. Today was a great example. I made a fool of myself out there and I made you mad. Yeah, I was jealous but that was only part of it. I also wanted to prove I’d grown up a little and that I wasn’t the same sunscreen-caked dork who’d sit under an umbrella and read when he went to the beach anymore. I guess I still am.”

“You seem to be forgetting one major detail, Er.”

I traced the laugh-lines at the corner of his eyes and pushed his hair from his forehead. “What is it?”

“I like you just the way you are. I don’t expect you to change and develop a sudden passion for things I enjoy doing. Just be you. And if that means you’d rather finish a chapter lounging in the sand than jump in the water, that’s okay by me.”

“Thank you.”

“Don’t thank me. It comes with the territory. I wouldn’t want to spend the rest of my life with you if I didn’t love all your weird habits,” he teased, pulling us both to sit up.

“Weird? Me? I bet you can’t name three weird things about me,” I declared as I sauntered toward the bathroom.

“I bet I can name ten. I’ll give you my list at breakfast. Jump in the shower while I call housekeeping and ask them to change our sheets.”
