How to Keep Your Sanity While Editing Multiple Books

by Chris T. Kat

Thanks to the Blogger Girls for having me back! Dreamspinner Press will publish my new release, Secret Energy, on August 29th. Secret Energy is a shape-shifter story, and the sequel to Secret Chemistry.

To date, Secret Energy is the longest book I’ve ever written. It’s also the one I’ve re-written multiple times. I knew the editing process would be long and exhausting but that’s okay, some books are like that. But… then I received an e-mail informing me about the start of the editing process on Secret Energy. So far, so good. Then, I received another e-mail, informing me about the start of the editing process on Tidal Change. In that very moment, I succumbed to a light panic attack.

Now, how did I keep my sanity?

  • Told my husband about it, while trying not to hyperventilate. I received an amused smile, and he said, “I guess you won’t be bored then.” I reciprocated with a death glare, which gained me a massage later that night. 😉
  • Bought some new books to read, so I wouldn’t think about the upcoming edits. Because pretending the edits won’t magically appear in my inbox is always so realistic, right? Anyway, I got loads of awesome books.
  • I wrote another book, hoping if I lost myself in that world, the edits wouldn’t show up in my inbox. Naturally that wasn’t the case but hey, I got lots of writing done while I waited on my edits.
  • The main reason why I kept my sanity was my editor Erika Orrick. She knew very well I might be overwhelmed with the editing of both books, so she staggered them. I was never without work for more than a few days but it was do-able. So there, an awesome editor is worth a lot!

What do you do when you’re overwhelmed by work? Push through or try to hide? Eat chocolate or go for a run? I’m curious to learn more about your strategies!

An Excerpt from Secret Energy

Robin held his breath as he waited for Tim’s reaction. He scooted closer to the bear, and the bear sat down behind him, resting his heavy head on Robin’s left shoulder.

Tim shifted so fast that Robin recoiled. He pressed his bare back against the bear’s massive bulk, savoring the soft touch of fur on his skin. A wave of need rolled through him, rushing from his head to his crotch, pooling there. Robin covered his hardening erection as inconspicuously as possible.

“No,” Tim stated in a low voice. “No, he’s not. He’s a bear.”

Robin kept his eyes averted as he answered, “I think he’s a were-bear.”

Someone giggled, and Robin redirected his gaze toward Jay and Tim. Jay had shifted to his human form and lay on his side, trembling and white-faced. He was also the one emitting the giggling sounds, even though he tried his best to stifle them. Robin’s lips twitched into a smile.

Tim stepped over Jay and knelt next to him. The protective gesture wasn’t lost on Robin.

“Stop giggling. What’s so funny here?” Tim muttered.

“A were-bear. It rhymes.”

Confusion showed on Tim’s face as he said, “Great. So my brother is a poet and an idiot.”

“Hey!” Robin bristled.

The bear moved behind him, sliding even closer. Robin pushed back a little, relieved at feeling his mate’s presence. He still didn’t understand why the bear didn’t talk to him, but the silent support helped, more than it probably should given that he didn’t know anything about his mate, not even his name.

“I don’t believe he’s your mate,” Tim said.

“Why not?”

“He’s a bear.”

“A were-bear,” Jay corrected.

Robin caught Tim throwing an irritated glance at Jay. As quickly as it appeared, the glance disappeared because Jay was trailing his fingertips up and down Tim’s right forearm, calming him.

“He’s not going to mate a bear, nor is he going to mate a were-bear.”

“That’s not your decision to make,” Robin shot back hotly.

“You’re my little brother. Of course I’m making the decision.”

Stunned silence settled around them for a moment. The bear huffed and lifted his head from Robin’s shoulder. Robin immediately grabbed for the bear’s neck to pull him back. Jay coughed harshly, drawing Tim’s attention to him. Behind Tim’s back he gestured toward Robin’s crotch.

Gulping, Robin adjusted his legs so his half-hard cock was hidden from view. He mouthed ‘thank you’ to Jay. The bear sniffed, his head lowering until he came close to Robin’s erection.

“Uh, no sniffing there now,” Robin whispered. When the bear didn’t react, Robin added a desperate “Please.”

The bear moved his head away, though he swiped his tongue over Robin’s nipples as he did so. Robin groaned, closed his eyes, and pressed back into the wooly fur. Blood pulsed in his cock, filling it.

“Do that again,” he demanded.

“What the hell are you doing?” Tim yelled.

Robin’s eyes flew open. Shit! Just for a few seconds, he’d forgotten where he was and, more importantly, who was there.

“I-I…,” Robin stuttered. His cheeks burned.

“Stop this crap and come over here!” Tim shouted, the anger contorting his face.

“You stop this damn awful big-brother show,” Jay interrupted.

Tim swiveled his head around to look at Jay. “What?”

“Robin found his mate, and we won’t act like jerks and tear them apart. I’m not happy about being injured, but Robin’s right, I shouldn’t have attacked right away.”

“But—”

“Tim, you fought for me even though I’m a hybrid. Why is it so difficult for you to accept Robin’s mate isn’t a pure werewolf either?” Jay asked so softly Robin had to strain his ears to hear him.

“He doesn’t resemble a wolf in the slightest!”

Jay shrugged. “Neither do I.”

“Yes, you do, and anyway, that’s beside the point.”

“Is it? Why?”

“Because….” Tim tucked a stray strand of Jay’s chestnut hair behind his right ear before he bent over to kiss Jay tenderly. When he straightened up again, he said, “You should shift back. The earth is moist around here, and you’re already freezing.”

“I will if you promise to stop being such a prick.”

The bear snorted, and Robin coughed. When Tim glared at them, Robin whispered, “Shh, don’t set him off again.”

The bear rubbed his head against Robin’s face, eliciting a contented sigh from Robin. He felt safe with the bear surrounding him. His mate would protect him no matter what, Robin was certain of that.

“Robin?” Jay called out. “Go with your mate.”

“What? No! I have a say in where he goes—”

“Shut up, Tim,” Jay responded. He accompanied his response with an exaggerated eye roll, causing Robin to chuckle.

“Jay! He’s my baby brother, and I—”

“You will act like the great big brother you are and let him go with his mate. We can’t change the fact his mate isn’t a pure werewolf, Tim. Your parents are working hard on installing new laws and changing people’s perspectives. They’ll find a solution,” Jay said, although his voice didn’t hold much conviction.

Honorary Blogger Rory Ni Coileain: Traditional Fae Compared to the SoulShares Series – Excerpt & Giveaway!

Honorary_Blogger_Post

Traditional Fae Compared to the SoulShare Series

by Rory Ni Coileain

First, I’ve been a die-hard fantasy and science fiction addict for at least the last 40 years. I’ve read so many different “takes” on the Fae, the Sidhe, the Celtic supernatural in general that it’s hard for me to pin down any “traditional” lore to compare my writing to. Put another way, I have an incredibly rich and varied traditional palette to choose my colors from, but I’m not exactly sure where any individual color came from!

And there wasn’t any moment at which I sat down with my Muse and said “Okay, here’s what we have to choose from, which way are we taking this? Oh, and would you mind putting some trousers on, at least until we finish hashing this out? You’re quite distracting.” My Fae are at the same time completely out of my own imagination/my Muse’s dictation, and the product of those 40 years of gorging myself on everything from The Tragedy of the Children of Lir to Charles de Lint.

That being said, I’d say the strongest similarities between my work and traditional lore are in the personalities and nature of the Fae. A Fae in his or her own world, which they call the Realm, is pretty much completely self-absorbed, except for an inborn love for and loyalty to blood kin. The Realm and the human world were separated more than two thousand years ago, but Fae still have fond memories of the days when they could mess with handsome and beautiful humans at will. They’re capricious, unpredictable, pleasure-loving, and essentially immortal – they heal quickly from any wound that isn’t mortal by nature, but given that the only art form anywhere near as popular as sex is vendetta, there are a fair number of mortal-type wounds keeping the population down.

The biggest difference between my writing and traditional Fae lore (apart from the fact that my Fae don’t have wings – but they do have really cool faceted irises, like genstones) is probably the nature and workings of magick in my world. In my Evil Day Job, I’m a lawyer and an editor, which means I need my details to work, dammit. And since magick is at the core of my storyline, I needed a magickal system that clicked. (That’s not to say I have everything plotted out to a ‘t’, mind you – unfortunately, I keep getting lovely inspirations that really should have at least been foreshadowed two or three books ago. Someday I’ll rewrite…) My Fae don’t “cast spells” – they channel magick, sometimes in ways that are natural to them because of the Demesne to which they belong (Earth, Fire, Water, Air), and sometimes with the help of a learned channeling (similar to a spell). Magick is a living force, and while it follows certain natural laws, one gets the impression that it does so grudgingly, and occasionally just goes off and does whatever the hell it wants to. It pervades everything in the Realm, living and non-living alike. And living magick has a source, the energy that runs through ley lines. Think of it like gasoline and crude oil (if I ever come up with a more eco-friendly explanation, I’ll let you know).  Ley energy is the raw form of magickal energy; once it’s been processed (which occurs naturally in the Realm, and in the bodies of individual Fae under the right circumstances), it becomes living magick, and can sustain life and fuel channelings. (Oh, and then there’s elemental magick, which is a separate force that can be used by some Fae (the Noble families) and which basically forms a very few Fae (the Royals are essentially elementals. Fun times.) The problem in my world is that thousands of years ago, in order to save the Realm from destruction by the Marfach, an evil entity that devours and warps and corrupts living magick, the Fae were forced to seal off the Realm from the human world – and the ley energy is an indivisible part of the human world. So ever since the Sundering, the Realm and all its inhabitants have been living on their stored magick, with no access to the ley energy. And by the time the SoulShares series starts, this is beginning to cause problems.

About Hard As Stone

16097830Tiernan Guaire is a Fae in exile. Forced from the Realm into the human world for the unimaginable crime of a brother’s murder, he lives by a century-old vow, to trust no one, and never to allow himself to love or be loved.

Kevin Almstead has just lost his future, to a vote of the partners at his law firm. Trying to escape for an evening, he ventures into Purgatory, the hottest all-male nightclub in Washington, D.C., where he allows himself to be seduced by a stranger with long blond hair and ice-blue eyes.

Drawn into a Soulshare bond with his intended one-night stand, Tiernan soon learns that the most ancient and evil enemy of the Fae still walks the human world, and it will stop at nothing – certainly not Kevin Almstead – to possess the magick of a Noble Fae.

Tiernan stirred, muttered under his breath, the first signs of distress he’d shown since falling asleep. Passing out. Whatever. Kevin sighed, resting a hand lightly on the blond’s smooth chest; in short order, he found himself running his fingertips lightly over his lover’s chest, tracing the lines of the muscles, and then down, a fingertip traveling along the intricate tattoo over his hip. Tiernan wasn’t buff, not like some men were and Kevin himself tried to be. Lean, hard-bodied, almost impossibly fit. And with that long, unruly blond hair, and his crystalline blue eyes, Tiernan would turn heads in rooms full of men or women. And no doubt had.

Mine.

The Fae rolled onto his side, away from Kevin; chuckling softly, Kevin settled himself behind his lover, glancing over the shoulder in front of him at the bedside clock. He could still get almost three hours of sleep if he was lucky. He wrapped an arm around Tiernan, nuzzled into the curve where neck met shoulder, breathed in the scent of wild hair and sated male body and honey, and closed his eyes. So this is what magic smells like.

About Gale Force

1Conall Dary is the most powerful mage born to the Fae race since the Realm was parted from the human world, over two thousand years ago. But that very power condemns him to a lifetime of celibacy, because sex calls to power, and he has power enough to drain a world. When he refuses to use his talents for a Noble lady’s petty revenge, he finds himself shanghaied to the human world, his soul torn in half and his magick blocked.

Josh LaFontaine is the beautifully inked owner of Raging Art-On, a Washington, D.C. tattoo and piercing parlor. While taking part in New York City’s Pride march with a former lover’s dance company, his world changes forever when the man of his dreams materializes out of nowhere at his feet. Josh’s sensual and loving touch, the first Conall has ever known, may be enough to give him back the magick he’s lost. But before they can complete their Soulshare, a terrible accident leaves Conall bodiless, lost, and invisible, to everyone except – maybe – the human with whom he shares a soul. But Josh will need to find him before the ancient evil of the Marfach does or everything they have – and more – will be lost.

The sense of relief as he got out of the taxi was like nothing he’d ever felt before, and even knowing most of it wasn’t his own didn’t make it any less overwhelming. Only the presence of the foot traffic in and out of Purgatory kept him from falling to his knees in gratitude, maybe doing some pavement-kissing.

Well, that and a sense of haste only slightly less urgent than a cattle prod. He fumbled the keys off the hook at his belt and unlocked the deadbolt, then keyed in the combination on the touchpad, wincing as the tiny crystalline tones tried to pierce his eardrums.

Are you sure you can do this, lanan? There might be another way. Just let me think, now that I can.

Josh shook his head. Letting himself into the small client lounge in the front, he locked the door behind himself and made straight for the tattoo studio. “No time. Every minute you’re disembodied makes it less likely you’ll ever get back, you said so yourself. And me…” He paused, his hand on the doorknob of his studio. “I’m not sure how much longer I can stand this.”

About Deep Plunge

iFor the last six hundred years or so, the only things reminding Lochlann Doran he’s a Fae have been his faceted aquamarine eyes and the fact that he can’t die. He’s been a wanderer for so long in the human world – over two thousand years – that he’s lost his magick, including the gift of healing that goes along with being a Fae of the Demesne of Water. Finding his SoulShare might get it back for him. But it might kill him, too.

Garrett Templar has been living on borrowed time, in a sense, since he was eighteen, when one of the johns he entertained to pay the bills while he danced at Purgatory infected him with HIV. It was always supposed to be a “manageable” disease, though, at least until a cure was found. Except he’s just found out that the virus in his system has inexplicably mutated into full-blown AIDS, and no known drug cocktail can even slow it down.

And when Lochlann and Garrett find each other at last, on Purgatory’s dance floor, the only thing as urgent as their need for one another is the hunger of an ancient evil to do whatever is necessary to possess Lochlann’s magick…

Shit. His grip tightened on the strap of his bag, ready to swing it — or ditch it, if it looked like that would help him escape . And for one sick, sweaty, gut-wrenching moment, he was ten years old again, hearing the kids closing in behind him, knowing there was no way in hell he was going to get away without another split lip, ruined shirt, blackened eye. Almost hearing his mother’s voice again. Garrett Lee Templar, I swear, you find more trouble than any ten other boys ever dreamed of. Do you think I can just make new clothes appear out of thin air?

“Garrett?”

He recognized that voice from somewhere. Slowly, he turned. And stared up into eyes that gleamed blue even in the crappy light from the streetlight on the corner.

“Lochlann?” He hadn’t had to rent his ass out for a while now, but the idea of a john following him home from the club still made his skin crawl. Yet there was something about those eyes, something different.

No. Fuck that shit. You get hurt the worst when you let yourself hope.

He gave up on trying to sleep, rolling onto his back and lying sprawled out in the great bed fit for a king. Or a Prince. Shite. He didn’t want to be a fecking Royal. Whatever that meant. But if there was one thing he could say he’d learned in life, it was that what he wanted had fuck all to do with what happened to him.

Though ever since the Twalf, last summer, there was one thing he nearly always got, when he wanted it. The thrill. They’d thought to break him that night, and perhaps they had, but after the breaking he’d been made anew. Into a man who craved what the bastards sought to shame him with, and who used them, in the end, more cruelly than they had used him. After all, he could use them, and others like them, any time he liked.

Addicted? Hell, no. Victorious.blogger_bee_trans

Marcus, Lord Rothbury, is on the run. Part of a foiled plot to help King Louis and Queen Marie Antoinette escape to Switzerland, he’s searching for the jewels the rebels stole from the queen—jewels that, when sold in England, will buy the monarchs’ freedom and restore the aristocratic order Marcus holds dear.

Pamphleteer James Lockhart publicly condemns the monarchy and has his own plans for the jewels—selling them to help the Parisian poor. But when the two are thrown together against a common adversary, Marcus finds himself increasingly attracted to the impetuous American.

As they hunt for the jewels, Marcus begins to suspect his companion isn’t all he seems. Secretive and changeable, James could be playing a double game, and Marcus can’t be sure who James is fighting against—the enemy, or the man who’s fallen in love with him.

Blurb: As vain as he is beautiful, Nino Santos happily lives life waiting for the next ferry full of fairies to bring him new conquests. As long as they aren t hirsute, he s all in. So he’s shocked to wake up after a beach party he cannot remember with a hairy naked man lying next to him.

Teddy Miller doesn t remember the Bear Week party either, much less the Abercrombie & Fitch model wannabe next to him. Teddy doesn t give two cents about appearances, but guys like Abercrombie don t return the favor. That s why he prefers men with extra fur and padding over carbon copy clones of perfection a type of man Teddy is far too familiar with.

When Nino and Teddy glimpse each other the next morning, it s loathing at first sight. Instead of exchanging phone numbers, they exchange insults and vow never to see each other again. In Provincetown, however, escaping a trick best forgotten isn t easy. Mutual friends and chance circumstances keep Nino and Teddy in each other s orbit. But are they fighting each other or the attraction growing between them? The answer lies amid Provincetown s windswept dunes and the night neither of them can recall.

Why Is It So Hard to Open Up to Those We Love?

by Nic Starr

Hi everyone, I’m Nic and I’m thrilled to be here with The Blogger Girls. Thanks you so much for having me.

Recently I caught up with a close friend, in fact one of my oldest and dearest friends. It’d been a while since we’d had a chance to really talk—all too often real life gets in the way—so we’d had the odd dinner and phone call but not really talked. We hadn’t spoken about the important stuff, like the details of the marriage break up she is currently going through.

But this time we did talk—we also laughed and cried and drank lots of wine—and this time she shared some of what was happening behind her usually happy and outgoing façade. Enough time had passed that my friend was able to look back on her relationship with some objectivity, distancing herself from the more emotional side.

The recurring theme was the communication within her relationship. Or to be more accurate, the lack of honest communication. It turns out that both my BFF and her husband and spent a lot of time—as in years—thinking they knew what the other was thinking and what the other wanted. Surprise! They had no idea of what the other one really thought.

You want to live overseas and love the glamour of international travel and the expat lifestyle – WRONG

You love the challenge of climbing the corporate ladder and get immense satisfaction from your career – WRONG

The result? Years of ‘sacrificing’ to give the other partner what they thought they wanted. Years of ‘supporting’ each other. Years of sacrificing and supporting to do something neither of them were really passionate about doing. All which lead them to the point they are now.

How can two people who love each other get it so wrong? Surely open communication should be easy? But it’s amazing how often it’s not.

In my novella, It’s Not Easy, miscommunication rears its ugly head, as does making decisions based on what other people think—or more correctly, what they assume the other person thinks. Ben is making decisions driven by protecting his family and Spence is making decisions based on his love for Ben. Their hearts are in the right place, it just takes a while for them to realize there are other paths than the ones they’ve chosen.

I hope you enjoy Ben and Spence’s story.

About It’s Not Easy

It's Not EasyBen Cooper gave up on following his dreams to keep the peace in his family. Best friend Spencer Henderson has always been Ben’s rock. For Spence, who is in love with Ben, supporting Ben always came first, but as Ben starts to date their friend Suzie, Spence has to think of himself for the first time. The ramifications of one fateful night means leaving their small town may be Spence’s only option to protect his broken heart.

With trouble escalating at home and Spence out of reach, Ben finds it harder to cope. Without Spence’s help, Ben’s life may finally spiral out of control.
